300 & 135 G Master Primes (Patreon)
Content
Last weekend I covered the final 2XU Triathlon event for the season.
I chose to cover this event using two camera bodies and two prime lenses.
The 300 F2.8 GM was attached to my A1 camera and the FE 135 F1.8 GM was attached to my A7CII - I did not carry a zoom lens for this event.
Just for the record, these two prime lenses will now become my default lenses for shooting sports events in preference to the Sony Telephoto zooms.
My lightweight travel gear will remain the same - as outlined in my Mighty Mekong and Travel 2023 Seminars available to Patreon Premium and Premium Plus members.
The 300 GM looks to be a pretty big lens (when the large lens hood is attached) but it is, in fact, just 2.64 oz / 75 grams heavier than my FE 100-400 F4.5-5.6 GM (but has a two-stop advantage over the zoom at 300mm).
The FE 135 F1.8 GM is 3.35 oz / 90 grams lighter than the FE 70-200 F2.8 GM II but still benefits from the lightening-fast linear XD focus motors.
The advantage to using these primes is in the ability to use very wide apertures to keep the ISO low and make the subjects pop from the busy backgrounds.
The last three images (above) were captured with the FE 135 F1.8 at F1.8 in the pre-dawn light.
I did carry a 1.4x teleconverter for the FE 300 GM but this was not used on this occasion. If I had needed to attach the 1.4x Tele I would have had an effective focal length of 420mm at F4 (still a full stop wider than the FE 100-400 GM).
