I've been waiting for this ever since you all announced that your were gonna react to this show. This is one of my favorite arcs in all of anime! Also, I love the idea of you all placing bets for every match!

So not to set your expectations but this is pretty much referred to as "the tournament arc" definitely my number one and I've enjoyed many a good tournament arc (DB World Martial Arts Tournaments are all really good too and specie shoutout to Flame of Recca that was a solid team tournament arc as well) I believe at its peak this arc was actually beating DBZ head to head so it's no wonder this show engages well despite being an older anime so many have claimed inspiration from YYH I believe Sasuke is supposed to be inspired by Hiei and Kubo as well took a lot of inspiration from Togashi by his own admission

This show is HOW you do a tournament arc. One of the best arcs in anime. Also whatever version you're watching messed up the title. The actual title to this episode is "Invitees To The Dark Tournament". EDIT: Well, your editor got the episode title correct haha

I'm pretty sure the line that Hie and Yukina do not share the same mother is a mistake by the Funimation dub. They are half siblings, and they do share the same mother. I think Hie meant to say "It's not important.. She and I have different parents, we are only half siblings." Knowing Togashi he probably meant to be vague with Hie's backstory.

This is were the real Yu Yu Hakusho begins. Also, kudos to Takashi for avoiding the typical shonen trope of "I wanna be the strongest there is". The main characters are forced to participate against their will and risk their lifes doing so. And it just gets better and better.

I doubt skipping training arcs saves money because that's typically where they'd put filler. Like in Dragon Ball pretty much all training arcs after the first one with Master Roshi were completely skipped in the manga but are made into several episodes in the anime.

The difference is that Yu Yu Hakusho is well written and the entire DragonBall franchise is not. Don't get me wrong, Toriyama was a fantastic mangaka and was instrumental in shaping the medium. But from a pure literary perspective, he was not a good writer. As evidenced from him forgetting characters existed, inconsistent mechanics and storybeats, constant retcons, etc.

I love a old school mangaka time skip, nowadays mangaka want to show a lot of the training because its easy chapters to write, Oda, Kishimoto, Togashi and the og Toriyama, all skip that shit

2 things, keep notice on the clarity and crispness of the graphics as this arc pans out... and 2. Younger Toguro (dub captions calls him Toguro 2) is voiced by Dameon Clarke, who voices Cell (all of them) and Handsome Jack from Borderlands (GOD these pretzels suck!")

Like everyone else, I'm gonna' emphasize how the Dark Tournament is one of the greatest arcs in anime, and I can't WAIT to experience it once again with y'all newbies. There's something I never payed attention to in this show, but is crystal clear to me now watching your reactions. That is the complete lack of filler! Quite the rarity for an anime of this era. I imagine the pacing would've been considered break-neck back then. 😛
