Rhaenyra is not built for this

JJ

Gotta respect Deamon being in charge of King's Landing for one (1) day and going "Welp this was fun now onto the rest of the planet" Just absolutely lives for any conflict and can't get enough of it. In a different world he and Aemond could have been happy war buddies just off conquering Asshai and Yi Ti together.

#sundayrundown More then any other episode of a GoT show this episode might be most like an actual chapter. If you havent read any of the books the way the chapters are structured is as a pov from a specific character (Jon, Theon, Cersei). This episode was Rheanyra's pov

Kevin

For the topic of legitimizing bastards: of course the right thing to do in all our eyes would be to do as Corlys wishes. What clouds Rhaenyra here is deeply personal to her. Shes never acknowledged her sons are bastards. Even in this very conversation she talks about "rumors". She hasn't even acknowledged it to her own sons. This is at the very heart of her shame (as Corlys says). Though she has acknowledged that bastards can be dragon riders, thats not something she can help. Her being seen legitimizing bastards will be seen by the realm as her admitting the rumors about her own son, thus casting doubt on his right to inherit the throne and also reopening all the shame about gaslighting everyone for decades. We know its bad politics but this has been a throughline of her adult life. She will maintain to her grave that her children are legitimate by birth.

Baela definitely saw Rhaena but she aint tryin to snitch on her sister

why is suraj constantly wiping his top lip?

#SundayRundown This episode was beautifully directed and the score was perfectly designed to induce you into psychosis, but the writing literally made every character VERY stupid this episode. First Daemon just blindly believing that was Daeron and NOT taking his dragon back with him as well, to test if it was truly him. Then Alicent once again playing the innocent victim and not taking ANY responsibility for the state the realm is in right now, plus has the audacity to get mad at Rhaenrya for killing her father and being shocked that Rhaenrya still has to kill her sons, like what did you think was gonna happen when you helped usurped the throne? Also creating unnecessary drama between Corlys and Rhaenrya when in the book, Rhaenrya did legitimize Alyn and Addam with no pushback. While this season has been miles better than last season, it still suffers from the same problem, being that the acting, cinematography, score, directing, all S Tier, but the writing just doesn't match it.

Welcome back, Navi, Rana! Hope you had a great time on your trip!

Sickleweed

Suraj, next time you all do the 30 seconds count, everyone should just do the Widow's Bay party face 😮 (even Navi and Rana) for the whole time. 😁

Duffy the Nar Slayer

Damn, I mainly threw in that "You guys are too woke" line to harmlessly and playfully troll you guys. You are all really butt hurt about that comment huh, Lol. I apologize if I hurt your feelings. I still think Rhaenyra's a bad leader, though. Not because she is a woman but because she makes a lot of bad decisions. The same way I thought Viserys, Robert, and Daenerys were all bad leaders who made a lot of bad decisions as well

StasiaOne

Lol right! I was thinking, you're talking to the wrong queen Daemon. He should've been born during Dany's time while she was conquering Essos

GodUsopp

#sundayrundown im sorry but that argument at the end about "he wouldnt of done it to daemon" is one of the single dumbest things ive ever heard in my life, Daemon isnt Jaces mom and only surviving parent, Daemon is a battle hardened warrior whos fought in multiple wars up to this point , has had actual dragon combat experience. Rhanerya could barely hold a sword. So yeah no shit she needed to be locked in a closet as to not throw away the cause trying to play something she has never shown to be, am I a misogynist if i tell my mom to get in the house if theres a fight starting at a block party but i wouldnt tell my dad the same? are we dead ass? This is called trying to find a message where there is none, and considering the person who ends up as king after all this is male and it returns to first born son inheriting the throne, i would say the entire point of the story has nothing to do with "well women can rule too" especially when the characters after all this is over say "well lets never make a women a Queen again since it caused all of this" thats hijacking a authors story to fit your narrative

PurportedGrey

That's been the biggest problem for me too, just like GoT in those last 4 seasons, it's produced so damn well, but so heavily hindered by its writing and character direction most of the time.

Mzuka

“Trying to find a message where there is none”, brother art might not be for you. Definitely not GRRM’s work. You think that because the conclusion of the Dance entrenches the misogyny in Westeros, that that means the story has nothing to do with feminism and patriarchy? THAT is the dumbest take I’ve heard in a while. Rhaenyra and Dany’s journeys are mirrors of each other. What’s ironic with your take about the end of the Dance is that it is used as legal precedence for denying women the right to the succession. Rhaenyra’s failure isn’t treated as her own, it’s taken as proof that women shouldn’t rule. We are literally witnessing the layer of the institution of patriarchy in Westeros being laid. The story isn’t “women can rule just as well as men”, it’s about a society that refuses to let them, then uses the resulting chaos to justify that refusal. The second irony is that this entire point went straight over your head and now you’re mad that other people can see it. As for the situation with locking her in her room, Rhaenrya was going into combat on dragonback and she is a way more experienced rider than Jace. The Valyrians are not sexist in the same way as the Westerosi: Aegon conquered Westeros with his two sisters, and they fought both beside him and without him. If you can’t see the pretty obvious themes in the text thats fine, enjoy the show however you want to. But getting angry at the Normies for analysing it at all is crazy, especially since they are picking up the correct stuff. Just basic research into the author’s politics and comments on his story and world would show you where his politics lean, and he damn sure put a message in here. Stop trying to suppress it to fit your narrative.

Jacob Livingston

Yall really are not understanding why she couldn’t legitimize them right away. First watch I was pissed about rhaenyras decision in not just legitimizing them too. However you have to see from her point of view as well. Shes already made 3 bastards dragon riders and legitimizing them will make it seem like she is acknowledging her sons as bastards. Not to mention corlys just only started claiming them himself. I see both points of view but corlys should have just waited and let her do it later. She has so much going on as is.

Jacob Livingston

I am very worried the dragon riders are going to turn on the blacks. Ulf has been disrespected by them at every turn. Hugh is now in a tough situation with his wife leaving to tumbleton and now they might have to go burn the city down with his wife there. As well as not yet getting what him and his wife were promised. And then corlys addam and alyn are all upset they weren’t legitimized. It’s going to get even worst real fast I fear. And then there can be some big tension between daemon and rhaenyra when he finds out baela was the one riding sheepstealer. He’s going to the vale now where baela and sheepstealer are. Btw I 100% think sunfyre is still alive!!!!! And aegon is going to find sunfyre when he gets to rooks rest.

Jacob Livingston

Jace is the only one who saw that it was rhaena riding sheepstealer. Baela nor nobody else knows it was baela.

Jacob Livingston

Surj what were you watching lol. The high septon clearly said he would not anoint her

GodUsopp

Well no, The normies said "thats the point of the show" i just flat out disagree, The dance doesnt have any deep message about "well women can rule actually", I simply pointed out how the story actually says something different. Grrm is a progressive sure but nothing about any of his game of thrones books push some type of message about women actually being able to rule. That is a message the normies want to shove into his mouth. Rhaenrya being more experienced rider than Jace has nothing to do with it, She has never been in combat, My point simply was about them saying "he'd never do it to daemon" well no shit because daemon is a general, who has dragon combat experience and has been fighting in wars for decades at this point. While Rhanerya has shown to struggle holding a sword. Also you point out danny, All we have seen from danny in the books is being bad at ruling. I am not making any statements about what I think women can and can't do. I consider myself more woke than most. I simply hate when people shove messages where there are none and then try to make that message cannon. Most rhanerya fans are just the people who were danerys fans and didnt acknowledge when she did anything wrong either and where looking stupid in the face when she burnt down a city because they made it cannon in their minds that she was this perfect goddess who was gonna sit on the iron throne even though if you paid attention it was obviously not gonna end like that with her. If you want game of thrones/fire and blood/ Dunk and egg books to have a big underlying message its that kings are bad, not "oh women can lead too", when in the fire and blood books Rhanerya and Alicient are blood thirsty and crazy and its actually people around them trying to calm them down not this "Rhanerya and alicient want peace while all the men want war" that they tried to push last season

DC

I don't know why you keep trying to claim the woke thing. Its not about being woke. I didn't see anyone here complaining about a trans actor playing the sea snake or whatever. No one cares. We care about you jumping on easy divisive simple explanations. You barely even discussed that Jace's motivations could have been genuine fear for his mother/queen, hot-headed youth or even the fact that he died meant he probably made the right decision and maybe saved her life. I don't even know really who exactly is the sexist actor here. Unless Jace is on the raven scroll equivalent of 4chan its safe to say his fear for his mother/queen overrides his lack of respect for women. If it was another non-related woman then it rules that out and leaves sexism. The people who followed Jace's order can't be sexist because they can barely even choose what to do of their own volition. You even acknowledge that in other instance when lower borns are presented with two conflicting orders they have to pick one and both are bad for them. For some reason you can identify this nuance in other instances but as I said you jump for the easy unnuanced version when divisive gender issues are at play. I don't think you're trying to score points or whatever or that Marketa is making you, it's just a simple easy answer which people seem to prefer. Everyone understands that Ryan Condal and the writers are bashing us over the head with that subtext but that doesn't mean you can't look at it uncritically. She has proven to make rash decisions, she's a flawed character and queen. That's also the point right. We're not following Maest-hatma Ghandi we're following a ruthless sheltered product of incest with a fucked up upbringing. She's allowed to be flawed, her son is allowed to act irrationally out of fear. I suppose you conceded the sexism may be only a small percentage but the initial reaction exclusively blamed that and didn't even entertain alternatives because you, as most people do, love simple easy reasons for decisions, ways to compartmentalise a nuanced issue. Trump voters are famous for this as well, you knee jerk the simple explanation and don't even entertain alternatives because that issue is dealt with. I hope to god your woke comments in every episode since weren't just engagement bait because if so I'm fool with a small penis.

Arctic_stark

@Mzuka Everyone is free to interpret the show as they see fit. I have to point out though, GRRM has completely distanced himself from this show, and in his own words this is no longer his story. I assume if HBO hadn't silenced him we would be hearing a lot more of his criticisms of the show. I'm guessing you have read Fire and Blood since you are invoking the author and the text. If you have then I hope you will not suggest that the characters in the books (Rhaenyra and Alicent in particular) bear much similarity to the characters in the show, or even the sequence of events and character motivations in general. This is indeed a completely different story as GRRM himself said. In fact I think it is offensive to the author to use him in this discussion when he has been so disrespected by the showrunners and has been very unhappy about the changes. It must have been a heartbreaking thing for him and GRRM did not speak lightly on this matter. It is perfectly fine to appreciate the show as its own thing. But if we must use the artists to make our arguments then we must look to the showrunners, not the author. "Rhaenyra and Dany’s journeys are obvious mirrors of each other." I'd appreciate it if you could expand on this further.

Mzuka

Arctic, the reason the source material is relevant is because OP used the ending of the Dance (the fact that there is a king and this sets legal precedent for the no female heir status quo) as a point against the idea that there is a feminist theme to this story. He literally accused the Normies of hijacking the “authors story” to fit their narrative. While I’m aware of GRRM’s distancing from the show (and I’m on his side tbh), the plot point we are discussing hasn’t even manifested in the show yet. As for how Dany and Rhaenrya mirror each other; they’re both female Targaryen heirs denied power, they both spend years in exile from the seat of power, they both lose a child before their wars truly begin, both start as idealistic rulers before grief and betrayal harden them , both discover conquering is easier than governing, both become increasingly isolated, and both end up remembered more for fear than for their intentions. What’s going on in HOTD now is like a lengthier, better executed version of Dany’s descent to madness in S8. Rhaenyra’s struggles balancing the rule of a city and cantankerous advisors are also very similar to Dany’s trials in Meereen. Of course I’m assuming that some of the end of Dany’s journey in ASOIAF is similar to what we see in the show (in concept if not execution). I’m also assuming that Rhaenyra was different to how she was portrayed by the in-world maesters in Fire & Blood, but I think there’s evidence to suggest there is a historical bias against her. I also think that echoes what we see in the books, where we read events and actions from inside Dany’s head and then see how those stories are warped and twisted to make her seem like a villain by the time other characters hear of them.

Mzuka

@GodUsopp I think you’re oversimplifying the Normies take and the books/shows. It’s definitely more nuanced than “women can rule too” (and there’s more than one message). What I can say is that between the Normies take and what you seem to be implying, the underlying message definitely leans their way. You’re stuck on Daemon as an example but I don’t think they would have done it to any male ruler. And there’s no way to justify it, a Queensguard/Kingsguard cannot take orders from an heir over the sovereign. No one is saying is Jace is a misogynist, the misogyny of the society is evident in that a sworn sword would even listen to the Prince over their actual ruler. I also completely disagree with the idea that we see nothing in the books but Dany being bad at ruling. You should check out the essay “Untangling the Meereenese Knot” which breaks down Dany’s arc in Meereen and how she successfully negotiated a difficult peace, cause I don’t have the energy to rehash her plot. “Kings are bad” is just as flat and simple a take as “women can rule too”. I think the message in the books is a lot more layered than that, and GRRM went out of his way to show characters struggling to rule because that is just realistic.

Duffy the Nar Slayer

We understand her reasoning behind why she doesn't want to legitimize Corly's sons. It's just a terrible decision as usual. To feel better about years of lying and gaslighting regarding her sons' legitimacy—and to avoid further shame on herself, her house, and her current heir, Joffrey—she's willing to alienate her strongest and most loyal ally. Look at all the things House Velaryon has sacrificed to put her on the throne. Corlys even supported her, knowing that Lucerys wasn't his true heir. As someone else stated, "You can't disrespect your day ones like that." She knows she's in the wrong too, which is why she tried to hide it and didn't immediately talk to him about it

GodUsopp

I think thats applying real life logic to a ficitional world "he wouldnt of done it to any king" well couldnt that be because in the game of thrones world as soon as a highborn boy is born they put a sword in his hand? Rhanerya wanting to join the battle is as nonsensical as if cersei wanted to. All i know is that in the source material Rhaenrya and Alicient both are awful people and suck at ruling actually. There is no deeper message about women ruling, We will just have to agree to disagree. But thats partially what is wrong with modern media. Because like i said when this show eventually returns to "only male rulers moving forward" the people who tried to canonize a message that was never there are gonna be mad
