Finally somone is talking about this.

Ruxandra Grecu

Ah, fascinating. I dropped out on this show during the second season, I think? I knew the writing was pretty bad but I had access to so few queer-type things back then! However, bad writing got me to stop watching :P Thank you Verity and Ada for a really nice reprieve-type evening with your videos <3

I watched this entire show (almost) years ago and then gave up in the last season. I don't even remember the prison episode.

I only know two other people who have watched this show, and both of them are people I persuaded/strongarmed into watching it so that I would have someone to talk about it with. I watched the first four seasons and caught up with season five as it was airing. Even though the writing was meh at best, the cast had such a fun vibe and the premise was so weird and specific that I kept coming back. I stuck it out for Kenzi, and then for Tamsin. But what they did to her in the last season, oof. The last season in general is just like wtf. Upon later reflection, I think the main thing that appealed to me about the show was, as you said, the ways that Bo navigates the various binaries built into their world. I am bisexual and biracial, and there are ways in which the experiences born of those two features of my identity overlap or mirror and ways that they don't. Bo's bisexual succubus-ness, political (non)allegiance, and fae racial identity - but human upbringing - was a kind of multiple bi-ness I hadn't seen before. And however silly, it was refreshing to see a depiction of multiple bi-ness where when told to choose a side, for at least one of those binaries a character says "nah fuck that". Thanks for making this video, and all the others! I watch video essays to learn something new about the world. Yours is one of a small handful of channels where I consistently also learn something new about myself.

Hackles

Oh no. Thanks for reminding me of the icky bad parts of watching this show so that I can save myself from ruining my nostalgic version free of all problems with consent or trans-ness. 😬

MathClassWarfare

This was very fun. I watched some amount of this show (not the end) back in like 2012-2013 and remembered so little! It was very bad but quite fun. I do remember an arc where she has to go rescue Kenzie from Valhalla (? did this happen?) and was getting the sense that her big important relationship in life would be with her BFF. I wonder if that would have been a thematically bisexual ending (refusing to choose?)

Verity Ritchie

That's really lovely. I think in fact, she says "fuck that" to all those binaries, and I love that about the show too! Thank you!

Verity Ritchie

Kenzie in Valhalla was the start of the final season, so it sounds like you got close! I think you're right, it would've been a very bi ending, consistent with our ideas about coming of age stories like Margarita with a Straw and Princess Cyd!

MathClassWarfare

I think I might have skipped entire seasons 😆 or I conveniently forgot the transphobia

Gab

Started the show last year but fully forgot to follow through, so im so glad you made a video about it!!

Finally some one is talking about Lost Girl 🥹 I loved this show so much back in the day. I never finished season 5 (the show got more dark than I cared for) but the show was so important to me and so many of my queer friends at the time. Was it perfect? Absolutely not. Rewatches especially have made me really uncomfortable with the cavalier way the show handles sexual assault. (Also the trans episode you mentioned is deeply disturbing). But all my bi babes and ace girlies loved the show because it felt so nice to see a bi character be openly and unashamedly bisexual. Another important part of the show for us was the representation of bi people in platonic relationships. Media can focus so heavily on bi romance at the expense of platonic connection. Gay women can have best friends. Straight women can have best friends. Bi women? They have complicated romances and complicated friendships. But not Bo. Bo gets to exist both within and beyond her sexual orientation. She can be indecisive in her relationships, and loyal to her friends. She can be conflicted in love and passionate in friendship. It's small, but it humanizing. The show is camp trash and straight-male-gaze coded, but it's hard not to appreciate the queer, found-family sweetness of it all. Much like the shot of Bo on the couch with all her former beaus, there is a scene where Kenzi comes home from working as a mole at the country club, feet tired and fearful for her life. She flops down on top of Bo and Dyson, and Dyson massages her bare feet. It’s this incredibly darling scene where two friends care for their other friend in a way that is sensual without being horny. It's just love. Casual, sincere love. Whenever scenes like this came on, my housemate and I used to scream at the TV, “🥹 FRIENDSHIP! 🥹” and get all weepy eyed. Because we’re queer, and lbr, so many of us are carried through evictions and lay offs and break ups and family drama and prejudice trauma by the love and support of our friends. It’s a refreshing reprieve from most other queer content where queerness seems to start and end with romantic love.

Princess Weekes

I love this show, it is so campy, and even though the last few seasons (and the first episode of s3) are misses for me--I am glad I got to enjoy Bo in my 20s.

Gaoth gwyntog gwen

I would love to know what your favourite episodes were so I can try to find them and watch them somewhere! Also, really good video, really good points, thank you both so much.

Hannah Grace

Wait they use the Seelie and Unseelie court lore, but don’t name them as such? Fascinating.

Hannah Grace

So wait, she’s a polyamorous bisexual succubus…. and you’re saying she never once has a MMF threesome?? Only FFM? Not believable, producers 😅
