We finally get to talk about something we didn’t think we could ever publicly address. Thanks hbomberguy!

Notes [Edit]

Overview of both videos

Our video came out on 3 September 2021, his on 5 November 2021.

While we largely use different games as examples, with ours focused on bi characters and his on gay characters, both our video and Somerton's can be summarised as follows:

Begins with queer gaming history focusing on The Sims and Fable

Playersexuality

Liara in Mass Effect and how that character’s gender/sexuality are about being titillating to straight men

Bloodlines in a game series forcing gay players to end up with other gender

Game where you can choose a male or female character and the game treats both characters the same despite sexism in the culture

Jokes, including a joke about how easy it is to get married in Skyrim and living your millennial fantasy

Implications of “choosing” gay content

Comparing opt-in video game mechanics to queerbaiting and similar strategies in film

Hidden gay content

Requirements for “canonical” representation (which was original to our video)

Queer NPCs

Queer protagonists

Ends on the note of the potential of indie games (mentioning Stardew Valley)

We missed some points/evidence in the podcast which we want to clarify here:

Wasn't this just a popular topic at the time? No. This wasn’t a hot topic at the time. It wasn’t like when the Barbie movie came out and every youtuber had their own take (which is common and fine). And our video wasn't inspired by a recent article or anything, it was inspired by having played some (not new) games. And then suddenly two months later Somerton covered the exact same niche topic with the exact same take, but with no citations.

There were a couple of small videos on youtube discussing playersexuality before ours came out, but because we all did our independent research and had our own opinions, the videos are completely different, even when discussing the same topics or games, and neither of these videos inspired ours. For example, both our video and this video talk about cheating mechanics, but their video comes at it from the perspective of games enabling dodgy behaviour towards your in-game partner, whereas we cover it from the perspective of games forcing you to cheat if you want to play them bisexually. The other video comes up with an original classification system for characters, as did we, but of course it’s completely different from ours because we both based it on our individual observations.

These videos prove that even when covering the same niche topics, doing your own research and forming your own opinions will lead to vastly different takes. So it’s interesting that James’ video was so similar to ours not just in takes but also in structure and even jokes. It’s also interesting that both our video and the two videos discussed above all cover playersexuality through a bisexual lens – playersexuality is often equated with bisexuality so that’s an obvious angle – whereas the bisexual perspective is completely absent from James’ video and replaced with a gay one. It’s also notable that while other videos on the same topic use the common term “playersexuality,” James makes up his own terminology as if he’s actively trying to avoid the conventional terms. But why would he need to do that? Neither of the linked videos cover the gay button aspect of playersexuality, which we do – and so does James, but again, he avoids the actual term »the gay button« (which is in the thumbnail of our video).

But couldn’t it just be a coincidence and he didn’t plagiarise? On top of being a well established plagiarist, we know he plagiarised at least part of this video already from TechRaptor. It’s not a question of “did he plagiarise?” but rather “who else did he plagiarise?” Even if he happened to use all the same sources as we did to come to his own conclusion independently, then he ripped off those sources instead.

"Four Years Later"Where we give the year 2000 as The Sims' release date and then proceed to explain that Fable arrived "four years later," Somerton gives no dates for The Sims (or Fable) but still uses the phrase "four years later" to segue into Fable.

"The Glass Ceiling"Somerton's script has clearly been so heavily rearranged that it has become nonsensical. He titles a chapter "Glass Ceiling," but doesn't talk about a glass ceiling in that chapter. He mentions a glass ceiling halfway through the following chapter, only to say that it's not really a "tried-and-true glass ceiling" anyway.

Oooh, looking forward to listening to this! The comparison clips video you linked is still set to private by the way.

Jo Liss

By the way, is there any chance you can allow downloads on your audio embeds? I like to listen to podcasts at 2x speed and Patreon doesn't have speed controls.

Daniel Tarik

A great discussion and I'm so glad you're both finally able to talk about this without fear of him sending his fans after you Your videos are of a consistently great quality that thief and liar could only dream of

Verity Ritchie

Hmmm, well was able to allow it to be accessed via spotify, which allows it to be sped up, is that helpful? I'm not sure if it has any other options

Ruxandra Grecu

I am just halfway through, but I am so angry! (partly because I think I saw his video before I saw yours and that just makes me mad)

Pedro Henrique

This was one of the cases in which I watched your video and didn't even watch his, but I was his Patreon as well and I was so angry for being scammed, especially when I realized the amazing talented people I was not accessing because he was hiding his sources and people who were actually having the good ideas. Anyway I always thought you were the better YouTubers and you do an amazing work on the channel. Love you guys and I am so happy you are finally free to talk about this ❤️

Niamh

Thanks for talking about this, I don't follow hbomberguy so I don't know if I would have seen it but I begrudgingly watch James Somerton whenever I really want to watch more of your videos but there aren't any. I've long been annoyed by the strains of light misogyny, transphobia and biphobia that I see in his videos but if I ever noticed that he doesn't cite sources I've forgotten or dismissed it. Which is really a wake up call to me. I used to be somebody who followed links and verified original sources, but I think I've gotten used to the model that a lot of YouTubers and even tv programs use of having the citation in a corner of the screen for a moment and therefore trusting that it's there even if I'm not actually looking at the screen at the moment, and then just not worrying about it unless somebody is saying something that sounds suspicious. I like your model of having a picture of the source onscreen the whole time but I wonder if there are ways to be even more obvious about the presence of sources, so much so that it would immediately twig as suspicious when it's not there in other videos. Like maybe explaining how you found the source, giving context about the person or institution it comes from, not in any great detail but enough to firmly place it in our minds, having a picture of the person or institution up - idk you could probably come up with more creative and entertaining ways to do it. Not that you're responsible for training all of our brains... but if you wanted to I'm sure you would do an excellent job of it 😁

Verity Ritchie

Honestly, so often we just stick in a screenshot of an article or something like that where its like HERE IT IS, I don't know if we can make it more explicit. But it is something we will definitely be even more conscious of in the future, we're thinking about it a lot right now!

Amalya Grodzinsky Liebermann

I’m so glad to hear you speak about this. I remember stumbling upon James’ videos a few weeks after I found your channel, and I was so confused by his videos as they ARE structured poorly and all seemed like points I’d heard in other videos. But all the views and positive comments made me think maybe I was just not understanding him fully? Like, if his point sounds incoherent to me that’s because I didn’t understand, not because he makes such a messy video For such a long time I’ve been recommending your channel to friends, and I always say how you make clear points without using snobby language to sound smarter, unlike “other” YouTubers (James) lol Happy to know I wasn’t wrong, sad to hear he actually did rip you off

Gwender Euphoria

So sorry that arsehole stole your hard work. I hope the shout out in homberguy's video brings new viewers in.

Gwender Euphoria

Also I've not listened to the podcast yet so idk if this is mentioned... But he uploaded a video about queerness in LOTR (looks like specifically the Amazon show from the thumbnail) suspiciously soon after you did...

Vince Whitacre

Well if you don't want me to listen at work, you need to stop having premieres when I'm at work 🤪 I honestly never thought of subscription base being a signifier of trust. I always figure the only BIG channels were let's plays, children's videos like Mr. Beast, and Fantano. You know those "articles" on Facebook or Instagram where it's just r/AskReddit threads collated and stuffed with ads? Hey! I guess someone figured out how to do that on YouTube! That sucks!

Will E.

I was so excited when you guys got a shoutout! Love hearing your take on the situation

2026-09-08 07:00 I wasn’t a Somerton Subscriber. YouTube recommended a couple of times but his “vibe” wasn’t for me (“hello fellow kids”). Funnily enough I watched a lot more iiluminaughtii but it always felt…off? Like she was just reading things she didn’t understand…whoops! Now I know why! I have always enjoyed your content and HBomb gave me the nudge to subscribe and Patreon a lot of creators I haven’t before and haven’t been able to afford before. I’m so sorry you go so ripped off. I’ve always wanted to make some (ugh) YouTube content, but the has really wanted me to take a deep dive of research on the history of situations and how we started citing sources in academia and how we trust what is written and decide to use it. So…maybe that’ll happen! Keep up the good work!

I discovered your channel several months ago and I really enjoy your work. I never saw any of that James guy videos (before today I didn't know he existed or any of the drama) so I saw your Gay Button video first, and seeing the comparison with his makes it so obvious his was a rip off of yours, and a poorly done one at that. Whenever I watch your videos I'm excited for the thought journey that I'm about to go on because I can see the care and dedication you have for the topics, and how seriously you take the academic research that goes into it. You're the only YouTubers that I support on patreon for this reason and because you don't take sponsorships, which I respect immensely. Your level of commitment is inspiring, which makes it all the more infuriating that some self-entitled asshole took it upon himself to scrape your hard work and pass it off as his own. I find it especially sinister and disheartening that it comes from someone within the queer community. But I'm also unsurprised that a cis white man, irrespective of his queer identity, would feel entitled to climb on the backs of others' to elevate himself. Keep doing the amazing work you are doing because it's so valued. The truth will out, and that James can piss all the way off.

Fifi Mar

You know, in retrospect I do remember feeling a sense of deja vu when I saw his video, but at the time I couldn't put my finger on why, and didn't really give it that much thought. Now it all makes sense! I really respect and appreciate your work and it angers me that he did this to you. I never gave him money, just views, but if I had realized he was ripping your work off, I would not have been quiet about it. I'm glad it's been brought to light so publicly now.

Verity Ritchie

Thanks Amalya! Maybe his secret genius is yet to be revealed...

Verity Ritchie

“hello fellow kids” 🤣 Thanks for your support, A! Yeah, I think you can really tell when someone doesn't understand what they're reading!

Verity Ritchie

Thanks Oluwanik! I think some people are just like that, and it'll happen in any community eventually. Youtube is just so unfiltered and video essays have been so gradually rising in popularity, it was just a matter of time before a scammer like him appeared in our community, I think. But hopefully this is the start of a new era where we're able to recognise this stuff better!

Jess Schomberg

My librarian heart was super excited to listen to your whole segment on citations. I've really appreciated how you have the citation up during the whole segment, because there have been a few times I decided halfway through a given topic that I want to learn more about the topic you're discussing and I don't have to rewind to find the citation again. It makes it really easy to find your source and satisfy my curiosity. Thank you for being so thoughtful and careful!

August

I feel incredibly dumb for not having noticed this. I had already clocked Somerton's plagiarism when his video game video came out, and I'd seen your video before, AND I noticed that there were a lot of similarities. But some of the ways in which his video was worse (like the way he mentioned the Sims bit which, as you said, doesn't make any sense in his video) made me figure it couldn’t be stolen—because if he stole from a source that knew what happened in the Sims, then surely he would’ve talked about it. I actually recommended your video in his comments, which I hope was a kick in the teeth if he noticed my comment. For me, I think this is a good lesson that word-for-word copying isn’t the only type of plagiarism. Hopefully next time something like this happens, I'll be better equipped to notice it. Either way, I'm so glad this is out in the open now and that you both felt comfortable discussing how James stole from you. I hope all the noise around this brings more views your way!

Verity Ritchie

Haha, I am really glad you recommended our video in the comments August, thank you!

Verity Ritchie

Oh I love this, thank you Jessica! That is so nice!

August

Also, just wanted to check--it looks like this episode is marked as public on Spotify, whereas the others are private. I shared it then deleted the share--I wanted to make sure this is intended to be public before sending the link to people? I think it's really great if it is, but wanted to make sure.

Verity Ritchie

Yes, we want it to be public, don't worry! It'll probably be just this one, but we wanted the information to be out there, so we decided it should be public. Thanks for asking though!

August

awesome, thank you! Just re-shared it in the hbomb discord :)

ljg

It's kind of funny that maybe an hour before I saw this podcast drop, I was talking to someone about your gaming vid and his - specifically that while it didn't come off like direct and obvious plagiarization as detailed in hbomberguy's vid, Somerton's work felt somehow both derivative of yours while also being lazily researched, poorly constructed, and contradictory to itself with a 'central' thesis that seems to shift between chapters - is the problem playersexual romance options who are only queer if you pursue them, or is it sad queer characters that *aren't* unavoidable via playing the game? (And it drove me bonkers that it seemed like he didn't even establish a thesis until 15-20 minutes in.) Real glad that wasn't all just in my head and that you both noticed it as well!

Fifi Mar

I had a similar experience watching the two videos, where I really had all the pieces in front of me to put it together, but just didn't. And I have plenty of practice reading critically and doing research (I work in law). I don't think either of us is dumb, I think this just speaks to how easy it is for someone to get away with plagiarism or misinformation on YouTube. I know I'm certainly not bringing the same scrutiny to video essays as I am to my work... nor do I think we can expect people in general to be that rigorous as viewers. It is kind of scary to me that I didn't notice the plagiarism right in front of my face, though.

Verity Ritchie

Oh wow! Yeah I think its just so hard to tell with this video unless you know the topic well enough, and then its glaringly obvious! But either way it is still...shit!

mincedfish

your bisexuality in games video is something i've linked and discussed with a lot of friends, and still think back on from time to time! thank you so much for making that one in particular. i had assumed that i must've seen james' copycat video as well, but it looks like i had unsubscribed from him a few videos before that one. there goes my chance to call his content forgettable, haha. this whole thing seems so obvious in hindsight, but he used his position to get everyone to give him the benefit of the doubt... i'm glad it could spur discussions like this and teach all of us in the audience how to be more discerning about where we're getting information from! i have a new level of appreciation for the work the two of you put into researching your videos, so i wanted to leave a comment to say thanks. glad you finally got a chance to talk about this publicly, it seems a lot of people were sitting on grievances about this guy!

The Mad Jay Woman

This is all very cathartic. I rejected Somerton early on when I noticed he had wholesale cut and pasted THE CELLULOID CLOSET into his video (and then again the second time he uploaded) and all I could do was leave a comment which felt icky because I was giving him engagement (and it probably got deleted or downposted). All you can do with a problem creator is not engage and try to get the word out but if you're just a nobody viewer it doesn't come to much. And so I just watched in horror as he continued to grow and even be praised by other prominent creators. It broke my brain, I was Gomez Addams: HAS THE PLANET GONE MAD?! I don't say this to gloat, it's just that I care very much about both quality culture criticism and supporting queer creators, both of which have been under threat in the current media landscape. And here was this hack holding himself up as *the* authority on gay culture and no one else was saying anything. There was the dust-up about Nebula on Twitter and a few cracks started to show but in rushed his stans to threaten everyone and that was about it. I hate that some are viewing this as mere drama, it's a relief to hear other people share their experiences. I don't expect sweeping changes to YouTube culture but I hope this has been a wake-up call to some about the serious issues at play here. I'm very sorry that you both were one of his targets. I love the channel, love that someone is out here repping the Disaster Bis. I always come away from your work with new information or a fresh take on a familiar piece of entertainment. Looking forward to all your future output

Comfort and Adam

We'll be listening to this later tonight (yesterday was all about watching the HBomberGuy video) but before we do, we just want to say how sorry we are. Sorry for you, and all the other people who James stole from. Sorry for our inability to recognize what was going on. Sorry for being such fans that we recommended his videos to others (even on your stream, good lord, so sorry for that). We were lucky, we were totally blind to all of this and a couple of months back we got clued into some of this by another YouTuber... but even then we had hope he could learn and come back. But seeing the extent of this, it's just gut wrenching. There's just nothing to come back from because there was nothing there to begin with. From one set of creatives who has had their work stolen time and time again, to another set of creatives that had their work stolen by someone we supported. We are deeply, profoundly, heart broken.

Birdie

hello guys!! after harris' video, i saw your youtube community post, and i rushed to patreon to throw my money at you. i left a comment on youtube but also must tell you all how deserving you are of the praise you two receive, directly, through patreon. you deserve every positive thing coming your way. i'm a long term viewer of the verilybitchie channel and feel a great sense of satisfaction watching how far it's come—and this is just the beginning. i watched the FANTASTIC gay button video and remember being floored at how well-researched, cohesive, funny, and charismatic it came out. i also remember being recommended james' video on the same subject. having already seen his boring, clinical, unpassionate videos on yuri!!! on ice and killing stalking, i came into it already feeling tired of his script style and giving up on trying to like someone gaining so much traction so quickly. and then to realize how eerily similar his video was to verilybitchie's?? i was so put off and never watched his videos again. the plus side—it freed up my watch time to dedicate to you guys' channel. verity and ada, there's something i need to remind you both, so important that i made a patreon account in the hopes you not only see it but that it sticks to you: you are curating one of the MOST productively energetic, compassionate, and intellectually-hungry communities on youtube. THANK YOU for what you do, for producing material which feels not like a lecture, but an open door, an opportunity to learn and discuss ideas with other individuals with a passion for research, queer visibility, and creativity. verilybitchie means the world to me and i love it to bits. keep on! and let's hope many more channels are inspired by your attitude!

Brettany Shannon

Hello and three things. Thing one, I found your work after watching The Handmaiden and wanting to do a post-viewing deep-dive. Right away, I was impressed by your citation style and determined to follow your work based on an apparent desire to be credible, thoughtful edutainers, emphasis on both edu- and -tainer. Thing two, oh, Somerton's a full-on plagiarist. All one has to do to qualify as a plagiarist is to relay someone else's words, work, or ideas as one's own without proper credit. Thing three, I'm high school friends with Maria San Filippo and she is the best. Thanks to your vigorous YouTube-friendly citations, I was able to text her immediately in ALL CAPS. So thanks all around for your so fucking valid service.

Verity Ritchie

Thanks Comfort and Adam, and don't blame yourselves for not recognising it, he was a scammer and he took advantage!

Verity Ritchie

Thanks mincedfish! lol you got out early, that's great!

Verity Ritchie

This is so lovely, thank you Birdie! You're too kind!

Verity Ritchie

Oh my god you're friends with Maria San Filippo! That's awesome! Her books are on the shelf right next to me as I type this! Haha, I love that you texted her in all caps! Thank you, Brettany!

Teobesta

It is no wonder he had so much content that had so much depth, even if not well put together at times. It wasn't just the full time work of two people (plus possibly a couple of other people behind the screen) but so many others who spent so much time and energy doing the research. It was too good to be true!

Verity Ritchie

Wow you caught on early! I am hopeful that there will at least be a shift in how youtubers manage their sources. Everyone will be scared that hbomberguy will call them out! 🤣

Mykey

I loved that video because playersexuality and other systems for queerness in games was only really talked about like on reddit or forums before that video. A lot of those spaces were full of bigoted nerd bros who would raid the discussions to complain about "sjws" or whatever. I'm glad I never really got into somerton's videos, I'd seen a few but he never really clicked for me.

Mikel

I actually started following your channel like a year after I started following his, and by that point I had already watched his video, so when I saw that you also had one on the same topic I was like "oh, this seems to be about the exact same thing but the bisexual version, not sure I'm interested in watching another hour-long video essay on the exact same topic (also, I myself am a gay guy, so generally speaking I'm more driven to engage with media that centers the gay-male perspective rather than the bisexual one, sorry lol)", and to this day I've never watched yours 💀💀💀 now I feel stupid lol glad hbomberguy decided to expose him!

Enya @VestaBlackclaw

Context: I found both you and Somerton back in 2020 when I was doing research for one of my college courses, which was Sex and Gender Through Culture. I was doing a paper on bisexual erasure, so I was basically scouring the internet for all I could find. I found you guys first and your sources helped a lot with the paper among other things that finally helped me understand that no, I'm not indecisive about my sexuality, I'm just dealing with the bi-cycle and also I'm just very sapphic and that's fine. Somerton, on the other hand, was found when trying to find someone a version of the Celluloid Closet (which I had to watch for class) that was available, and it didn't click to me then that it was plagiarized wholesale because I wasn't aware that the "updated part" of it was stolen and all of that. I dropped him after a few minor waves of plagiarism discussions went bi, after he did some really insensitive stuff wrt how he talked about queerness during the Holocaust, and got sick of his views on queer women. So with that in mind: I only just learned of his video game "essay" the other day and it didn't even occur to me that it had been plagiarized because my sole interaction with it was to try and find the Hades section - which, the title "Glass Ceiling" was beyond confusing - because he was talking about queerness and gayness and he slapped a bi man on the cover. Given everything that happened with the HBomb and Todd in the Shadows videos, I had a sinking feeling that got confirmed in that he referred to both Zagreus and Thanatos as gay. Now I don't remember if Achilles and Patroclus or Theseus and Asterius had explicit sexualities in Hades (Supergiant), but I definitely know that Zagreus is canonically bisexual and Thanatos is implied it, but Somerton referred to them both as gay men. It also goes to show he didn't actually play Hades and just doubled down on this frankly offensive case of bi erasure because he goes on to say that Zagreus and Megaera have a "strictly sexual relationship" and that the past relationship was Thanatos and Zagreus, not Zagreus and Megaera. He also implies that ZagMeg is an unfeeling relationship predicated on sex only, when she's clearly hurt by what Zagreus did given she's the first boss you face!! And her entire relationship arc is built on rebuilding and making up for his actions. Yet another sleight: you can get into a polyamorous relationship with /both/ Megaera and Thanatos simultaneously, and it's implied the two do stuff with each other which is why Thanatos is implied bi while Zagreus is explicit?? He also acts as if Meg is the only relationship with a woman, when Dusa is right there as an option for the rare queer platonic partnership. He also framed this as the only queer rep in the game - not like a gay focus, like the only queer rep period - when that's simply not true since Dusa is clearly some form of aspec, Chaos is nonbinary, and Persephone is clearly bisexual since she returns to Hades and while there with her husband is openly seen flirting with Nyx who reciprocates and implies that they're REKINDLING an OLD relationship. Hades game has at least two canon bisexuals, with a third who very much seems to be, an aspec floating gorgon head, a nonbinary primordial manifestation of chaos itself, and a handful of clearly gay characters and others that are vague "are they or are they not" because it's Greek gods. But he made it seem like the game was solely populated by six gay men - when again, one of those is explicitly bisexual and the other is heavily implied while the other four have no set sexuality whatsoever but are absolutely canonically together. This, of course, leads into the fact that Somerton has a habit of just erasing bisexuality from the conversation altogether. There's the fact that he refers to bi women he doesn't like as "straight women" - like Becky Albertalli, author of Love, Simon - or the ones he seems to like as lesbians (though he's just vile and hates queer women in general), called Yuuri from Yuri on Ice a gay man when he's bi. Valkyrie from the MCU is bi because Tessa Thompson is, but he said that she was a lesbian. He completely jumps over the fact that korrasami and harlivy are bi4bi couples. And of course, the fact he jacked your amazing Gay Button video (which I've been using and citing and recommending since I found it, because it's an amazing framework for discussing how sexuality - especially bisexuality - is portrayed and not portrayed in games). He's a horribly biphobic and disrespectful grifter who has a weird grudge against queer women, so I'm glad he got torn down by none other than bisexual chaos essayist, HBomberGuy. I'm glad you guys got vindicated in the end, because you really deserve all the credit for all the work you put into your video essays. Still can't believe someone called your video - that's two months older - a "worse" version of Somerton's, that's just ridiculous and again: I'm glad that you both got vindicated in the end.

Verity Ritchie

Haha! Its okay, but I gotta tell you Mikel, ours is significantly better, and the jokes are chefs kiss

Verity Ritchie

Thanks Enya! What a nightmare that channel is. I hope you got a good grade on your paper!

Karoliina Ollikainen

I work in academia (for my sins…) and what James has done with your video would be considered an equally bad example of plagiarism as copy-pasting your words. Taking someone’s ideas and presenting them as your own and not crediting them to this extent would be like, losing your job and reputation as an academic level outrage. Like good luck ever getting published again. Also I totally get your feelings towards your own, older work (of course you have developed as an artist and educator over time and can’t help but see all the ways they could be better) but just wanted to say, I’ve been watching your (Verity’s) YouTube videos for around 10 years now I think (??) and they have always been a source of joy and interesting ideas to me, and it’s exciting to see what you (Verity & Ada) will produce in the future.

Tyghe Deerfield

Ironically, I never watched that specific video, but I did wonder why he never cited The Celluloid Closet in other videos where it would have been relevant.

Tyghe Deerfield

The most wild thing is that he could take inspired, well-written content and suck the life out of it. Even his re-wording tended to blunt the sharper points. He's not just a plagiarist and fabulist, he has negative charisma.

The Mad Jay Woman

Having watched the Todd in the Shadows video, I think Somerton would start with an agenda, usually someway he felt aggrieved, steal whatever he could that would back up his point and fill in the gaps by just pulling stuff out of his butt He didn’t care, so he wasn’t starting from a topic of interest and following the research to a conclusion. If he had he might have seen connections in things, but that requires learning which you’re not really doing if you’re just regurgitating others work to pump out content at speed I’m a If Books Could Kill podcast listener and so many of the authors they cover do this (well not the plagiarism so much), just stringing together random anecdotes to make their point instead of constructing a solid argument

The Mad Jay Woman

After some sleep I realize this was a bit more of an existential scream than a comment, apologies 😅 And if I was feeling all of this as a mere audience member I can only imagine going through it as a creator, I didn’t mean to downplay that I’d love to see the YouTube pecking order dismantled, being a bigger channel should never be a shield from bad deeds and speaking up about it shouldn’t be seen as drama but it would take a massive attitude shift between viewers and some creators

break_every_yoke

The weirdest thing to me is that I watched both your and his video, and I was like 'huh, kinda similar, odd.' and while I somehow didn't notice the plagiarism, I *did* think yours was better. I guess it was in the delivery!

Katherine Heneghan

I was one of Somerton's patrons - it makes me feel very embarrassed that I could possibly watch both yours and his videos and not notice the sharp decline in content quality. He wasn't necessarily my favorite video essayist, but I liked watching his stuff every now and then (which, obviously, I now know wasn't even "his stuff" at all). Honestly, the only reason I ever became one of his patrons was for the reason Verity hinted at -- he had posted a video back in July 2023 claiming he wasn't making enough money to pay his bills and that he'd have to shut down his channel. I felt bad for him and, since I'd liked some of his stuff, I decided to throw some money toward a fellow queer creator. He later deleted the video, so you can't find evidence of it existing. But it definitely existed. I totally got guilt-tripped into it and feel like such a fool.

Comfort and Adam

Thank you for your grace and understanding. Now it's time for all of us viewers to try and find a way to do better <3

How dare he steal from our queens! 👿👿👿 But seriously, I'm so sorry you had to go through this. But I'm glad y'all are at least getting more subs out of this mess. You two really do deserve it for your fantastic work!

Comfort and Adam

After listening to the podcast, our little triad have a LOT of things to think on. But we'd like to share two strong thoughts if we could: #1. This podcast is freaking GREAT! You two are so fun and amazing on your livestreams (sorry for our absence on the last one, we were at a con that weekend) and to be able to hear you in a focused podcast is just wonderful! There's a ton of media out there, but for us, your podcast is worth keeping up with. Thank you for spending the extra time, we really appreciate it ❤ #2. You guys talked about people who put your videos on in the background while they work... and sadly, that demographic includes us and most of the other people we know. As artists we work 12+ hours a day 7 days a week. And we need things we can enjoy without fully visually engaging so we can continue to work - hence our deep and profound love of YouTube and creators like you guys! But, this behavior that we, and so many others, engage in was part of what made it so easy for someone like James to pull the wool over our collective eyes. We feel like we, as a community, need to come together to think up a set of norms and tools that the average audience member can learn use to help discern the validity of a creators works. You guys had a lot of great suggestions, but it has be normalized across a massive viewership. How that might actually happen, we're sure nobody knows the actual answer to just yet. But this is a conversation that's happening right now and we hope it leads to long-term positive change.

The point about listening vs watching is a really good one. When I watch video essays, I usually take screenshots of citations to look up later. But I hadn’t thought about how I am often much more passive if I have a video on in the background. I still will pause when an interesting citation come up. But all of this have made me embarrassingly aware of how I don’t always notice the lack of citations when I just listen. Thank you for making me more aware of my vulnerabilities (and for the fantastic videos, of course)

Emily Kugler

Ditto. I didn’t think he was the best but I felt like I should support him.

Verity Ritchie

Oh wow, that's such a long time! Thank you for sticking with me/us, Karoliina, and thank you for the kind words!

Verity Ritchie

"suck the life out of it" is the perfect way to put it!

Verity Ritchie

We're okay, we came out on top in the end and we're so fortunate to have so much support from people like yourself! Thank you!

Verity Ritchie

I totally understand! I think the community will be a lot more vigilant going forward, and I hope that the discourse will include information as to whether certain creators cite their sources at least!

Verity Ritchie

I love that you take screenshots of citations, that's brilliant, Emily! You do more than most, I'm sure!

I finally watched the hbomberguy video and hear me out - but I really think you guys should do a video about him - because a. lbr it will definitely get you new subscribers and I value your content enough to think that's a good thing for everyone, and b. I just know that your insights would slice through the jumble of bi fem-ish angst I feel right now and make it all make sense in the way I trust only you to do. I keep thinking about V's comment about James having a deep voice, and how upset I felt watching the misogyny, biphobia and transphobia in his videos but how I didn't feel like I was really allowed to feel that way because he's queer and respected and other queer women and nb's I know were fans of his, and I've just gotten used to overlooking those attitudes from cis gay men, and it took him being excoriated by another queer man for different reasons for me to feel like I was allowed to really be mad about it. I mean ever since I saw the notif about this I felt this relief like finally, a "legitimate" reason to think he really isn't a good guy, but then I felt guilty for thinking that and still not allowed to and it wasn't until hbomberguy started talking about the misogyny too that I felt like that was a really valid reason to be mad at him. And this wasn't all just inside my head, I brought my negative reactions to him up in queer fem spaces online multiple times and was just met with people apologizing for him, or glossing over it like "yeah it's not great that he misgendered people, but have you seen the video he did on...?" "Oh I love that one" etc. But it also Was in my head because I kept watching his videos now and then because I wanted to know the queer history of Hollywood or whatever and I just carried this little pebble of resentment in my gut and felt like I was being too angry and sensitive and like I have less right to opinions about gay stuff or maybe even the ability to research it myself? Because of course I'm not even a full gay, just a poser bi, lurking in the fringes and sucking on the life blood of the community. And then meanwhile hearing Ada's thought processes about noticing a thing about queerness and bisexuality in culture that wasn't being talked about and having the guts to look into it herself and then write about it herself and coin terms about it was so f*ing inspiring. I've been doing all kinds of primary source research into gay history in the past few days as questions come up or occur to me and thinking casually about daring to say anything about any of it, and realizing how little I have valued my own thoughts and feelings for so long, how I don't feel the right to create, how I'm deterred by fears of how women who speak in public are treated, and then meanwhile how this man feels the right, and fears so little, that he speaks in public all the time, takes up all the available space, while having literally nothing of his own to say, while blatantly stealing the words out of other people's mouths. And hbomberguy didn't highlight it specifically but of the writers he named that James plagiarized in the horror video, most of them had women's first names. How many women, nb and trans creators did he steal from while also displaying contempt for us, and is that contempt what made him feel entitled to do it? Sorry that's such such a mess to read! Obviously I understand why you would want to stay out of the whole thing outside of Patreon, and thanks again for the podcast ep, it didn't really set in until later how fundamentally it shifted my brain.

Nikee Star

You both do such great work, it's so damn wrong for arseholes to make lame copies of your work! Verity and Ada, you have such great speaking voices it's a pleasure to listen to!

Made of Stardust

I may have been gotten by Mr. Somerton in the sense he got some of my money, I will at least be glad that I never linked him to anyone as a source or conversation. But you know who I did? You. And the video? The Gay Button video. So I may be a gullible roob, but I am at least selective.

Verity Ritchie

I don't think we will ever do a video about Somerton. We just want to leave it all behind and move on, its all a bit stressful. I agree about what Ada said, it can be really fascinating to centre bisexuality and see how differently a topic looks in that context. And in this particular contexts its definitely a more appropriate way to look at it!

kerez

i haven't listened to this yet, but i found your channel specifically because of his video game video. as in, i was really disappointed by his video, could tell the research was extremely surface-level, and he didn't even get character names right. then i saw your video on the recommended sidebar, watched it, and instantly fell in love with the way you presented the subject and binged all of your videos in a couple of days. your videos are always an instant watch for me after that and i can't count how often i've recommended your stuff. i'm sorry he took advantage of your terrific work and i'm looking forward to listening to this. thank you for being a consistently quality creative team with amazing charisma <3

Verity Ritchie

Oh wow! So at least, even if he did rip us off, he brought you to us! Thanks so much, kerez!

Katta

I think I ended up finding James' channel because I had been following yours for a while which is not great, HOWEVER I ended up as a patron because of his 'call for help' a while back. He did a whole emotional, tearful video about how YouTube was awful for queer creators, and I fell hook, line, and sinker. As I was signing up for his Patreon, I decided "hey, I should support other queer creators I love! As a good little bisexual I should support bisexual content!" and I started supporting you as well. Am I upset I gave him my money? Yes. Am I very glad it gave me a push to support other creators I love? Yes.

Verity Ritchie

Aw, a silver lining! Thank you for your support, Katta!

Nadi

Cis men keep getting away with it, especially if they're ripping off non-cis men. Always been common with any sort of intellectual production. I'm glad you can speak up about that now. The very reason I enjoy your content is because it's quality content that's actually insightful, not just rambling. I'm an academic myself and watching channels like yours is great to expose me to perspectives and issues I hadn't thought about or not considered in the same ways.

Fuchsia

I loved your Gay Button video! I didn't see James Somerton's video cause my honest and slightly bitchy opinion is that he was so boring to watch, the fact that he was plagiarising makes so much sense of why his videos felt so lacking in depth cause he was clumsily rehashing the exact points I'd seen other people do but with no fresh insight or research. The work and thought you put in to your video definitely shows and I think that's what I always found lacking in his content.
