We've launched our Floatplane page: https://www.floatplane.com/channel/HardwareUnboxed

We'll be offering Floatplane in addition to Patreon so nothing will change on your end unless you want to move across.

In this video we're talking about the differences between Patreon and Floatplane, the money split situation, early access videos and a few other things.

If you have any questions about Floatplane, chuck them below and we'll get to them.

Can we link patreon to floatplane, so us Patrons can view your content over there?

hardwareunboxed

That's currently not possible. All of the extra content is identical on both platforms. If you want early video access I recommend ending your Patreon sub and signing up to Floatplane instead

Mark_deLight

Fantastic news Tim! I'll have to watch the video, as I do have the question which way of support is better for you all. I may drop down here a little and just add FP, as I do like the early access, but want to support HB the most effective way I can for you.

Ariel Sue

Thanks, I had a feeling that was the case. Maybe I'll send some pestering emails to Luke. But I'll probably just switch over.

hardwareunboxed

Patreon is better for us if you do a $5 monthly subscription. Other tiers it's negligible

ZarconDeeGrissom

FP is cool, I'll need to see if I can remember my login there as it has been some time since using any if my FP coffee fund tips there, lol. in other words, I'm on YT 99.9% of the time anyway, so I am guilty of just forgetting to check FP for latest vids. B) ok, this OG member figured it out, FP looks way nicer than when it was a tab on the LTT forum, lol.

I respect Patreon for their past refusal to bend to the massive alt-right crypto-racist sloganeer attack, which cost them a lot. I won't be moving. That said, I understand that HU has to open as many avenues for funding as possible. And I'm sure your goal is to promote HU, not to demote Patreon. So, nothing against your plans; best of luck.

hardwareunboxed

Nothing is changing here on Patreon. As you alluded to, it's just another option for people that might better suit their needs

New Moon

My opinion on Floatplane is that it's a parasite that takes the the success you've built on the backs of Google/Youtube and robs your most loyal subscribers from time locked exclusive content (what you call "early access") while charging supporters exorbitant fees for that access. The only benefit I could possibly see from it is the higher quality video feed, but even that is completely undermined by the solution that Digital Foundry has come up with were they offer source quality Video's for streaming/download (HDR videos too) on their own site when you subscribe to the $5/Month tier on Patreon. I have to say I'm extremely dissapointed that you've signed on to Floatplane and find the value offered by it to consumers completely at odds with Luke's personal frugal personal perspective. That's my two cents anyway. Here's Digital Foundry's site: https://www.digitalfoundry.net/browse/patreon-exclusive

New Moon

Gamers Nexus has stated that they won't be signing on and I hope they stick to that stance.

I think you are misunderstanding our intent with early access (time locked) videos. We aren't changing any of our YouTube publishing schedule to specifically time lock access to profit on Floatplane. Instead we are actually offering early access on Floatplane because YouTube would massively punish us if we uploaded videos when they are finished on our own schedule. YouTube essentially forces us into publishing videos with a suitable gap, at algorithm friendly times. I would agree that we would be robbing viewers if we deliberately held back content from YouTube, but that's not what we are doing. We are continuing to operate on YouTube in the same way, with the same schedule. If this explanation isn't suitable to you then I'd recommend ending your Patreon subscription because our intention is not to "rob" anyone

hardwareunboxed

Cool but you can stop complaining because there is nothing to reasonably complain about.

>massive alt-right crypto-racist sloganeer attack What happened?

Aren't prices and such set by the creators on Floatplane? So if a channel decides to charge more than Patreon and hold back videos to make more money that's their choice and not the platform's, right? I don't get your disappointment.

Ben Wagener

Since I'm on gold and you're not the only ones I support here on Patreon I will stay here. Even though I'm subscribed to LTT on floatplane, I do that only to support their plattform, while I still watch the very most of their videos on YouTube.

hardwareunboxed

That's exactly right. Prices on both Patreon and Floatplane are set by us. We have set them the same on Patreon and Floatplane (and we're eating the slightly higher cost of Floatplane). We also aren't contractually obligated to offer early access videos, that's also our choice

Sis

It's on the internet. Check for Patreon dumps alt-right.

Jesse

Sounds interesting but I'll be sticking to patreon. I also noticed I was still on the $3 tier which I guess is no longer valid. So I upped to the $5 tier, I don't want to be a cheapskate.

The Trojan

So you're saying you don't like it? :)

Daniel Carroll

Oh, the way it was worded followed by "I won't be moving" made me thought Floatplane had something to do with it, which searching wasn't bringing up. My mistake.

HOkay

I think it's a positive that you're offering Floatplane as another alternative & for the same cost to the user. I'm torn which to support on, but this might be the push I needed to try Floatplane out.

ET3D

How can one rob subscribers of something that they never got? That's a very strange way to describe a new option that's available. Sure, it's available for a price, but it was never available before, and now it is. I'm also not sure how this different from offering these videos for a price using some other method. Not that I'm going to move to Floatplane, but this just argument just doesn't seem all that well thought out.

ldco1

I tried FloatPlane last year with a few other channels but the video would buffer and cancelled the sub, it looked like they didn't have a CDN that extended to AU, has that changed and how is the video performance now for AU folk?

hardwareunboxed

I've watched a bunch of our videos and LTT videos and it hasn't buffered for me. But I also have decent internet

Kevin

When I tried them a long time ago they were using OVH servers for delivering content. OVH recently launched a datacenter in AU so assuming they took advantage of that you should have a good experience now!
