Hey everyone, it's Bonus Dose Day! This week's video is a bit of a companion piece to another recent video I did, the one where I made fun of my own hoarding addiction. Also, I DID make a mistake in this video (well, at least one), let me know if you spot it. For once, I don't think it was a math mistake. Enjoy!

As more and more corporations try and do away with physical media, consumers are "fighting back" the only way they can: by spending money! A look at how physical music sales, including CDs, are on the rise. But who's buying all these CDs? The answer will NOT surprise you at all!

CD Sales Are Up. Why? (Extra Dose)

As more and more corporations try and do away with physical media, consumers are "fighting back" the only way they can: by spending money! A look at how physical music sales, including CDs, are on the rise. But who's buying all these CDs? The answer will NOT surprise you at all!

I think back to the days where I wasted so much money on cds. Mostly cds that sucked because there were a few good songs and I thought, the rest of the album is gonna be awesome, but it wasn’t. I wish I could go back and not buy so many damned mediocre albums. Not like I never bought and good ones.

I work in a record store. 99% of it is younger adults/teens driving their parent's old hand-me-down 25 year old cars, with CD sometimes being the only option for music, outside of those shitty FM transmitters

I dont wanna be the guy, but i think you got the wrong Album Cover (or Album Name) at 02:19 :D

In my bid to reduce my reliance on cloud services and the ever-increasing subscription prices, I started buying MP3 Albums from Amazon Music a few years back. DRM-free and mine forever, no monthly fees. At ~$10/album, I can buy 12+ per year for the cost of the average streaming music sub. How many new albums come out each year that you actually listen to!? 🤷‍♂️ Emby, Jellyfin, Plex all support Music collections. I don't need physical CDs, but 320mpbs MP3s are a good digital stand-in and the artist receives similar royalties as a CD sale...certainly much more than a streaming play pays out.

Yes, that'd be the mistake! I don't know why I wrote "Far Beyond Driven" in the script when I had looked up "Vulgar Display of Power", and then completely blanked when I put the visuals together with the audio. I caught it as I was uploading it for the final QA check, and went "you know what? It's funnier to leave it in rather than spend 15 minutes fixing this"

David Utsch

No worries, both albums are absolute classics and kick ass!

Ahh that's interesting, although I wonder if now car breakins for CDs will become more common again, "oh what do you mean I can sell them to some hipster store so they'll buy it back and I can steal it from them again!?"

I have a huge collection of KMFDM's CDs (like pretty much everything they've ever released, which is well over 60 CDs at this point including singles) but yes, as a teenager I bought CDs because there was one song I liked.

"Yours forever, as long as you never lose that hard drive or don't forget to back it up!" says someone who has no idea that they're just one forgotten old cellphone in a drawer away from a house fire that'll consume everything.

I have my own "cloud" backup via redundant NASes. You know who you're talking to. 😆🤓

I don’t get it, my sister buys CDs but doesn’t even have a device capable of playing them. There seems to be a trend of anti-consumption and digital minimalism being pushed at the moment. Ironically a trend that is making people buy more stuff they don’t need. I used to be the person that pirated and managed all my music manually. But it was so exhausting, paying the fee to a streaming service is absolutely worth it.

A Dose of Buckley

Haha well, there was a study 10 years ago, I'd be interested to see the numbers now, of vinyl collectors, where 41% of them had a record player but didn't actually listen to it, and 7% had no actual means of listening to it, they just bought it to collect.

As a musician, I still like collecting CDs from my favourite bands - I know I’ll always own them, enjoy the feeling of putting on a CD or vinyl to chill to, and love when they put some cool artwork with the album; it makes the experience feel a lot more connected and meaningful. I do it when I come across local bands I see play and like if they have merch. You know the moneys going to them, paying their way and helping them more than Spotify clicks. Saving up to start my own merch line, it’s the best way to generate revenue as an artist in an over saturated market.

I think people view the past w/ rose-colored glasses, most people back in the 90s and early 2000s didn't have large collections of physical media. Like, having those huge "libraries" were something middle to upper class people have always had and I say this as someone who does have large collections of physical media, including vinyls.

A Dose of Buckley

Yeah, maybe physical media collecting is the new toy collecting, like in the 2000s it was really popular to buy "all the toys you didn't have as a kid", a lot of Transformers, GI Joe, and Star Wars collectors in that era. Now adults just buy LEGO.

Lunoire

I had a large library like that back in the day despite being poor, but that's kind of the beauty of being able to buy secondhand. I still collect nowadays but I'm careful to limit it to things I know I'm gonna rewatch.
