The Godfather Part II | Watch Along

Comments

Jay Davis

Ooo LFG! The only real question here is do I re-rewatch your Godfather reaction first before this and make a day of it? ...yeah! Why not?

Anthony Lucido

The abortion reveal that she chose to kill their child “because this must all end”. The look on Pacino’s face the rage building is some of the greatest acting I’ve ever seen! That scene is a masterpiece the film is a masterpiece!

Athasin

I wonder if they're going to pretend like there never was a part 3 like the rest of us, or if they'll watch part 3 for the Camp channel.

Athasin

This movie is why I sometimes confuse Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

Athasin

Also, lmao at Maple quoting part 3 when referring to 2 without even realizing she's quoting part 3.

Owen

You guys absolutely must do Heat after this one. The great Pacino/DeNiro movie.

Athasin

Also, one thing that Godfather Part I doesn't explain is that Michael's first wife, Apollonia, was pregnant with his first (unborn) child when she was blown. It's why he was so ready to marry Kay and start a family with her. So what Kay did and how she described it as murdering his child, brought up past trauma along with infuriating him. I can't remember if Michael ever told her about Apollonia being pregnant, but I do remember he told her about Apollonia and her dying.

Chris Bruneau

so glad you both finally watched what IMHO is one of the greatest films ever made. Nice catch on Junior from the Sopranos, BTW. This film was the only time DeNiro and Pacino were ever in a film together until Heat in 1995, which I really hope you guys react to someday. Seeing these two fantastic, world-class actors in their prime is such a treat. Trivia: DeNiro spent almost a whole year studying the Sicilian dialect for the part of Vito C--he only speaks 8 words in English in the entire 3-hour film!

UNC

Yes please Heat soon!

Adam Vialpando

Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro rightfully get the due they deserve for their roles, but man is John Cazale amazing as Fredo. This man was only in 5 feature length films over a 6 year period before his death and all of them were Oscar nominated. Such an underappreciated actor. Who knows how far he would have gone if he lived.

Pyt

The Deer Hunter (1978) is such a great movie, it never gets brought up but its a masterpiece of a film.

Patrick

Maybe no better film to watch on a Sunday evening. I also love everyone sticking up for Michael during that confrontation with the senator.

Les

maybe the goat film

Haven’t read too much into these moviesin awhile but upon rewatch with y’all I think my main takeaway is that these movies are about A. Family (maybe especially fatherhood and brotherhood), and B. The similarities and differences between Michael and Vito. I mean there are a ton of themes and lessons, but what stick out most to me is how it feels like as smart and as clever and as cool as Michael is, I finish these first two movies thinking he is less of Vito reborn and more of a pale imitation. I don’t mean that Michael fails to live up to standard as the Godfather, but rather he fails as a father and a husband. Perhaps that is unfair to Michael, after all he has his brights spots as both a father and husband at times and is in a difficult situation often it seems. Furthermore in his defense, we don’t get to see how Vito handles marital issues much at all in the movies, so maybe he struggled too. Yet when the second movie ends, and we see the juxtaposition of the 3( or 4) sons of Vito at the table together even with their arguments and all, and then Michael is alone both then and especially in the present, it shows me that Michael no longer has much family at all. His wife, which yes she was often naive and in a situation of her own making, was gaslit and straight up lied to over and over again. Yes she did the abortion of the baby and marriage but that whole situation was of Michael’s making. Fredo betrayed (perhaps inadvertently) Michael in part because Michael failed to make Fredo feel valued. Yes Fredo was a buffoon, and honestly wholly unfit for the Corleone life, but he was Michael’s brother before all else and at least partially, Michael failed him and murdered him. His kids we don’t see much of in these 2 movies but even without knowing what happens in the end with them, id bet a lot of money he fucked them up beyond belief. So maybe it’s a pessimistic view of Michael, but the lesson I take from these two movies is that it felt like Vito was a family man first, and the Godfather second. Meanwhile Michael was the Godfather first, and a family man second. And he suffered greatly for that.

Stanley Etienne

Vito Corleone has got to be one of if not the greatest character in film history. Both DeNiro and Brando won Oscars playing the same character in different stages of his life. That's the only time it's ever happened. Great reaction to this classic film. If you want to see more of early DeNiro, check out Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and Raging Bull.

Justtired

Showing Michael sitting outside alone is one of my favorite final shots in any film.

Kevin Charley

For what it's worth, I think you should absolutely watch part 3

Sergio Q

If you guys decide to watch godfather part 3 which cut are you guys going to choose? The original or the re-cut?

Blkm44

I was waiting for this one, and it did not disappoint. Great reaction!

Owen

Oh man I was just at the library today and saw that Michael Mann wrote a novel called "Heat 2", a direct sequel to the original. What a choice.

Armchair Rizzard

This was great. I love how much both of you adored this movie. It totally is that good. I've always thought so, and each of my friends and loved ones whom I've shown these two movies has at least liked them, and almost always loved both.

Kayce Stubblefield

It is a great movie, perhaps surpassing the original, but I was surprised how little you tended to criticize Michael in contrast to those around him (Connie, Fredo, Kay, Hagen). After all, who is he doing all this for? His father is dead, his mother just wants a quiet life, his wife wants a normal relationship and family with the man she fell in love with (the man who enlisted in WW2 rather than be his father's pawn), his brother wants to be valued, his children want a present father--who among them is served by the 'Godfather' persona now? When does it all become self-serving?

Yaseen

3 is decent it's just not one of the best movies of all time

Jim Gambino

Thoroughly enjoyed this watch along. I highly recommend “The Offer. It’s a dramatization of the making of Godfather 1. I read The Godfather when I was 16. I became obsessed with it as it mirrored my own Sicilian/American family (minus most of the crime 🤣). Almost every TV in my house “fell off a truck”. I’ve tried to watch GF 3 numerous times. To quote Tom Hagen “ Can’t do it Sally” !

SavageDiplomat

Superb reaction. You are the only reactors to hold Kay accountable for her choices and i appreciate it. She definitely wasn't a victim. She knew the family she was getting involved with. To kill a baby just to spite your husband is crazy evil.

MabelandMargaret

Dude.. seriously?? A baby is a living, breathing infant. A fetus is what is aborted, it is not alive so no one is murdering anything. Also, I'd be willing to be you're mistaken if you think A & M aren't pro-choice. Also, you lack the media literacy required to appreciate a movie this great if your take away was "it was only to spite Michael." Also also.. this movie is about organized crime and people who have actual living, breathing people murdered all. The. Time. You misogynists really dabble heavily in the tone deaf hypocrisy.

Matthew s

I really enjoyed your perspectives on this film and Part I! Really fun reactions to watch. You should definitely watch Part III (or Part 3 Coda). Part III is a much more flawed work, but it is still one of the best gangster movies. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards when it came out in 1990. It's only "bad" compared to parts I and II, which are widely considered to be two of the top ten movies of all time.

SavageDiplomat

The word "fetus" comes from the Latin word fētus, meaning "offspring," "bringing forth," or "hatching of young" It doesnt matter if the baby is in the womb or not. Its still a human being. So on that point lets agree to disagree since theres nothing you can type that will change my mind. The rest of your condescending message and insults regarding my opinion on a movie are irrelevant so i will wish you all the best. Have a pleasant day.

MabelandMargaret

I honestly don't care what you think so I don't care about changing your mind- facts are facts, no matter how much anti-choice people want to deny reality. I only care how you twist it to pretend men's opinions on women's choices matter- it doesn't. You don't want abortions, prevent male orgasms, as those are the only cause of pregnancies. Stop acting like your feelings entitles you to affect women's choices.

SavageDiplomat

As i said before. Have a pleasant day.

Joe Blankenship

Anybody remember "The Godfather Saga?" Where they edited the first 2 movies together in chronological order? It used to play on USA or AMC a lot. It's kinda cool seeing it that way.

Adon Delgado

Fanucci was a wannabe gangster. Vito knew how actual mafia does things and sussed it out pretty quick. Fanucci was always alone Made his own collections Bothered every day working people Threatened to call the cops on Vito And lastly accepted $100 when he had demanded $600 His guy was right. He killed him and nothing happened cause he wasn’t connected at all.

Joe Stüll

Nah its actually worse to continue to perpetuate this family. This family should die out. They’re a net negative for the world.

Tim

What is with the cut at around 2:45:00?
