Maple: "Who do you think you think are coming into my town? I was flipping flapjacks and fighting fires". For real though 🤣

Fan theory is that Phil himself is in the closet. That's the main reason why he was so hell bent on killing Vito. He literally steps out of the closet when finally confronting him. This is my first time rewatching with that context in mind and it honestly makes a lot of sense to me. Reframing his pleasure as discomfort adds a lot to his character.

I don't know, I was never really sold on that theory. It's true that the imagery of him stepping out of the closet is striking but that's also really the only actual evidence there is, and even that is kind of thin. Like, what is the metaphor, is he coming out at that moment? I guess I'm just not a fan of the trope of "he really hates gays, so he must be secretly gay himself and he just hates himself". I guess there's nothing that says it's impossible, but if that was Chase's intention, he really didn't do much with the idea.

I'm not a fan of that trope either but from what we've seen about how his loved ones and peers feel about homosexuals, it's not far fetched for him to actually have a bad case of internalized homophobia. The scene that sold me was the final one. I think Phil would be sleeping like a baby if he didn't have some sort of a guilty conscience about killing Vito.

I think Carmella 100% knows that Adrianna is dead because she had the dream of her seeing Adrianna saying "I found Cosette." And she 100% turns a blind eye to Tony's misdeeds for the sake of wealth and lack of stress. AJ to me is exactly what Tony says, a spoiled little kid. He never had to face consequences and we've seen that throughout the seasons that people dont want to mess with AJ because of who is dad is. In no way to me is AJ karma for Tony and Carmella lol. He is annoying to deal with at best, its not like his out there torturing animals or displaying other signs of psychopathy lol.

That guy that was killed was one of the guys who beat Vito to death. Though obviously the Jersey guys don't know that.

He's very quick to remind people how many years he did in prison, and we know from previous episodes that "you get a pass for that in prison". In this episode there's no subtlety about it. Him coming out the closet like that is very intentional. There's lots of little hints in this episode as well: that he couldn't sleep that night is weird since it's not his first murder, his reaction to the bodybuilding show, and Phil's wife being so concerned with the idea that being gay is something you have to confront - even to the point that it seemed to make Phil uncomfortable.

In this reaction I feel like the girls were not able to understand the perspective of traditional conservative Italian communities where the members not only represent themselves but also their families and wider community in their behaviours. The Sopranos hail from Southern Italy at the turn of the century so have had a lot of those values cast in stone and transposed over to live and thrive in America. The friction of those traditional values against the modern American ones of Individualism and the pursuit of happiness is a theme throughout the show so it stands to reason that collectively they would feel so aggrieved about Vito's "lifestyle choices"
