Kill Crazy is easily my favorite character from series 8.

Troy Convers

A great episode and a great Whovian premise (The Doctor vs a computer that can unerringly predict the future), even if there is the question of whether she's predicting it rather than guiding it. A fantastic performance by RADA alumni Geraldine McEwan as Cassandra, and you finally see Killcrazy, who er, is exactly what you'd think a man of that name would be like! I didn't find the premise of Rimmer and Kochanski sleeping together that icky (would have been funnier with Lister and Rimmer, IMHO given the setup was there from 'Blue' in S7)), I did like how they both had two different, if predictable opinions on it. A shame that the series was written with too much smut and not enough on the core idea of the resurrected crew; would have been interesting if they had tied the two idea together some way, like Cassandra mentioning the resurrection and remarking on an outcome. Notice how they protected Rimmer after Cassandra predicted his death, shielding him at times; even a git like NanoRimmer is a Boy from the Dwarf; a bonding moment. Even Cat had a moment, stating that he didn't want Rimmer to die; remember how solemn he was when OG Rimmer died (as far as he knew, anyway)? And the reference to Future Echoes about Cassandra predicting Lister dying at age 181, even if she was 10 years off. Or has as something in the timeline changed? Yeah I know, it's RD so take the canon with a pinch of salt.

Jakob1978

Yeah, this is a very good episode, but it always feels like there’s a scene or two missing. Lister just suddenly knowing everything needed more build up. Next episode will be interesting….

Troy Convers

Interesting in a Confucius way.

TuneIntoSanityFM

I like how the original Rimmer did an original Rimmer "ooohhh Listy!"

Michael

Feeling pretty good 👍

The reason why Cassandra didn't see Rimmer's name on his vest is because Rimmer was wearing a full jacket on top of his canary uniform, which obscured his last name. I was confused about the same thing the first time I saw the episode, and I only caught it on re-watch. And I'm with you on the out-of-nowhere throw-away statement that Kryten figured it out. Unfortunately, it's a script problem and not an editing problem because this unseen exchange doesn't show up in any deleted scenes for this series. I'm also with you on wishing you'd see more interaction between Rimmer and Kochanski. It's not giving anything away to state that there was supposed to be another episode that paired those two characters up, but the script was never shot, and it was never recovered as a lost episode animatic. There's a little bit of a disconnect between early Holo!Rimmer and Nano!Rimmer, in that Holo!Rimmer in Future Echoes was on board with pre-determinism and Nano!Rimmer is only sort of onboard (as in when it only suits him). Another interesting disconnect between the two Rimmers is that Nano!Rimmer adapts much more quickly to boarding derelicts with the rest of the crew (and to being a Canary). I can't imagine early Holo!Rimmer even trying without going into full panic attack mode. It's not going to be the last time for that disconnect. Best to handwave it really.

Easily one of the best episodes of the franchise post-Rob Grant. Still not flawless, but it introduced one of the best side characters, Kill-Crazy. I think him screaming "LET'S GO KILL SOMETHING! YEAHH!!" then calmly walking in-line is never not funny. I hope that you can withstand the "Lads" aspect going into overdrive in the next episode.

Cedric Bombs

This is my personal favourite series 8 episode

Troy Convers

Killcrazy, a man of singular purpose. 😂

Mab7373822

Don't forget Nicey Ackerman!

Lizbeth Marcs

Yeah, Kill Crazy and Ackerman are my favorite side characters in this series. While I think this episode is good and is at least on the same level as some episodes in Series 3, I'm not sure I agree it's one of the best post-Rob Grant episodes. I think the first two episodes of Series 7 are still extraordinary (even if I'm not fond of most of that season), and there are a few Dave-era episodes I'd put higher on my "likes" list. *shrug* But to each their own, :-)

Troy Convers

Warden Ackerman is fucking sublime.

Mab7373822

I think this is the best episode of the the Doug Naylor era, until the Dave era of series 10 and beyond, which has some great episodes. Cassandra is brilliant, RIP to Geraldine McEwan who was a joy to have on the show. There is clearly a massive missing jump in logic, not sure what was going on there. This Rimmer is a cold-blooded sociopath. His laughter and mockery of Lister, teasing him of his fate for joining the Canaries, was sadistic. Leading Knot to his death, he felt nothing, and was so utterly dismissive when he died. Even mentioning he'd use Kochanski as a human shield so callously, he's a monster. I wonder if when Holly brought him back as a Hologram in season 1, if he made some alterations to his personality to dial down the cruelty in order to provide at least some empathy along with their conflicting relationship. Either way, it really illustrates the difference between this incarnation of Rimmer and "our" Rimmer. I know you guys are ahead of the Pateron releases, so you will have already seen next week's episode. On behalf of the United Kingdom, I apologise for it. The show never reaches that low again.

Darryl Glynn

I love how this episode shows the guys as shallow, sex crazed lads. I mean, men aren't always like that. BTW, Paula, that's a really nice low cut top you had on...... I missed most of the show.

pbaker

‘Kryten figured it out’ was my least favourite bit in 1999. When the dvd came out in 2006 I thought there must be a deleted scene where Kryten figured it out. Nope. The series gets worse from here so will be interesting to see the reactions over the next four weeks.

Jasper de Vries

By far my favourite series 8 episode and Geraldine McEwan was a big part of that.

Chris Devlin

They really do pull the resolution out of thin air. Literally the only thing I can think of is that Cassandra says all the Canaries apart from Lister, Cat, Kochanski and Kryten die, but Kill Crazy is still alive in the diving bell. I presume that is what prompts Kryten to figure it out, but it desperately needs some kind of explanation as it just comes out of nowhere. That said this is probably my favourite of the season. It feels like a more traditional episode and the Rimmer/Kochanski dynamic was a nice change of pace. The additional characters are mostly good additions. As people have already said KillCrazy is great, as is the Warden Ackerman. And I'll never not enjoy Mac Macdonald as Captain Hollister.

Lizbeth Marcs

The OG Human Rimmer was a bit of a sociopath and so was Holo!Rimmer at first. In the second episode "Future Echoes" which was name checked here, Holo!Rimmer was practically gleeful over the idea that Lister was about to die. It wasn't until "Me2" that we find out that constant contact with Lister had changed him, at least enough that he wasn't quite as awful.

John Veitch

All right, Glynn, let's go.

Katrine Myra

I feel like Nano!Rimmer adapting more quickly makes sense (or can at least be argued to make sense), because of Lister's influence. This Rimmer has the benefit of a more mature, experienced Lister who knows what Rimmer is capable. Well, in theory. :p

Skyrous

Kill-Crazy lived! which is great because he has the funniest line next week in an otherwise franchise low point of an episode. But the two part episode after is very good.

Travis Boyle

Probably the best episode of Series 8. But Paula is right it does feel like there are some scenes missing to explain it better. Thought Chloe Annette was good in this episode. I like her as Kochanski. As for how I feel I'll just quote Spock and say I feel fine.

Frank Murphy

Paula have you changed your hair? Somethings different lol Thus is my favourite episode of the series and very much like the old series episodes.

Travis Boyle

The way Ackerman runs down the stairs always gives me a laugh

Mark Ten

Yeah... low point in the road ahead

Frank Murphy

In back notes he did actually kill a family for no reason. Check out his wiki entry

Katrine Myra

I'll admit that while I agree this is one of the better episodes of the series, possibly the best one, I've never been able to watch it all the way through. I have to skip over the Rimmer and Kochanski scenes - they annoy me too much. Forcing myself to watch them properly for the first time in literal decades, I'm glad to see it wasn't quite as bad as I remembered. So thank you for that! I just... well, I don't like some of the things they're doing with Rimmer's character in this series, and... Okay, we're among friends here, I'm just going to say it: The comphet in series VIII series is absolutely bananas. As you've noted, Kochanski's characterization works a lot better in this series, and Cat has a lot more to work with, but the laddish jokes and "boy, men and women sure are different, huh" humor is just through the roof. The whole setup with Rimmer, Lister and Kochanski here sits weirdly with me: Rimmer not caring that he's GOING TO DIE because he'll have had sex? Lister being so jealous that he'd kill Rimmer? (I know that was a lie, but I feel like the implication was that Cassandra tried to make it happen, and that it was likely.) I mean what is this; a 90s sex comedy?! Well, anyway. There are some truly great jokes, the acting is wonderful, and it's very well done, overall. *eyes next ep nervously*

Katrine Myra

Wasn't Kill Crazy/Ackerman a thing in fandom for a while, or was that just a fever dream I had??

Blower

The next episode is not going to go down well, particularly with a female audience....it was pretty sketchy back when it aired - let alone today.

Ross Nolan

Rimmer and Kochanski are a fun duo and it's a shame the show hasn't given them much interaction. Kochanski had a couple of great lines here too - "that doesn't explain my other four senses!" and "I've never been seduced by pre-determinism theory before".

Geraint Harrison

"Kryten figured it out" is satire on the convenient explanations you find in sci-fi, similar to the "psi-scan" The problem arises that it's used often and becomes the thing that it mocks, how most satire fails in the end. It doesn't fail completely though, a running joke is still a running joke.

Troy Convers

Kochanski and Rimmer becoming an item would be the ultimate irony. 🤔

Troy Convers

Killcrazy and Ackerman are the highlights of an otherwise wretched episode 5.

John Veitch

"Rimmer"... to rhyme with "scum".

tal goren

I watched it two days ago for the firs time in preparation. it was even worse than I expected

Chris K

I'll allow Kill Crazy because he never made it into the ship!
