Bastard is a great word, but as someone from the south of England who had a northern Dad it has to be "bastard", not so much the southern "barstard" to work as a swear word. I use southern for the actual meaning. Northern for the curse.

Hell3Quin

You really work the BAS bit

I always forget about Alan B'Stard and I used to watch it all the time.

I don't remember much of the first season but the "My son! Father!" bit has been stuck in my head forever.

The New Statesman, aka Blackadder 5 by proxy.

My favourite episode of the first series! It feels almost like the subsequent series

Jakob1978

This is probably my favourite episode of the first series. There’s some problems with this first run, but every episode has multiple laugh out loud moments. The duke who died in the pre credits sequence was played by William Russell, who was Ian Chesterton one of the first companions in Doctor Who

That's the first time I've re-watched that episode since it first aired. The stand out jokes that I remembered over the decades were the Black Russian codpiece, Baldrick's "I thought they only came in sets" punchline to the relics scene, and the King having to repeat "who will rid me..." louder and louder to the Queen.

Troy Convers

I've watched some episodes recently. Blackadder and Baldrick could have fitted right into the B'Stard and Piers Fletcher-Dervish parts. Rick is just DEVILISH in it!

The messenger reminds me of a Rowan Atkinson sketch where he demonstrates how to play the walk on characters in Shakespeare. Its brilliant - search YouTube "Rowan Atkinson Live - The Actors Art" (there's a lot of wonderful sketch work under Rowan Atkinson Live). Did the Gallifrey Gals ever check the Rowan Atkinson Doctor Who sketch "The Curse of Fatal Death"? It was a Children In Need special run after Classic Doctor Who was cancelled but before new Who.

Troy Convers

Fuck me, that was a genuinely funny episode. Rowan and Brian playing off each other, the dinner table, the codpiece and boots, the Pythonesque skit with the knights and the Nuns. The season just gets better with each episode and as for next week.... Sorry, isn't Series 1 meant to be rubbish? 😂

Bastard is so good as you can hit with both syllables

The "may you turn orange in HUE" curse has lived rent-free in my head for YEARS! I went to Catholic schools, but they were at least honest about the Roman Catholic Church's extremely dicey history, so this episode was always a fave. In all honesty, Season 1 is good, it's just that the next two series cross the line into great, and series four crosses the line into sublime. It's a case of "by comparison series one is a slog", when really it's a fine comedy. It's the series that follow that make Blackadder a classic.

Point 1 I must mention – The dying Duke of Winchester, in the very, very first scene, was played by William Russell (Ian Chesterton himself!!) I knew he was in this but it was only on this rewatch I worked out it was him! No wonder I couldn’t recognise him; that beard and skull cap thing obscuring his face and him doing dying, croaky voice acting. Point 2 – I can see how much you’re warming to Percy that soon you’ll want to learn how to say Tim McInnerny’s name properly. Hopefully this will help; it’s Mac-In-Ernie, just run the words together more quickly, Tim MacInErnie etc Point 3 – Overall, I think, the Holy relic’s scene is still my favourite, my favourite bit of that “…nice cheeseboard,” just so random. But there’s more good stuff in this than you remember; “Presumably he’d forgotten he was wearing it!”, the second death scene with the other Bishop always finding a way in and even “Quick, the Nunnery’s on fire!” is really good. Very good thoughts as ever, and thanks again for being this dedicated. Chris

This and Episode 4 are very much the peak of series 1 for me. It goes a little bit wonky after them but these two are very solid.

Ashtara Levin

The Unicorn!!! I definitely missed that as a kid.. 😅😅🤣🤣

I believe they change the closing lyrics a little in every episode, so it will be difficult to memorize but hilarious to pay attention to

Yeah, The Queen of Spain's Beard is great and has a stellar guest cast with Margoyles and oscar winner Jim Broadbent. Then tails off again for the last two.
