Haven't had the chance to watch yet, but I did want to share this little bit of trivia. All of the monster voices in this episode were performed by Chris Barrie, which makes sense since the whole episode is Rimmer's mind torturing himself and others. Or, to put it another way, it's basically Silent Hill: Red Dwarf Edition.

Carlos Hernandez

Fun fact the Rimmer Lust monster was actually meant to be in Doctor Who. It was something I heard a while ago but I don't know if it's exactly true but in all honesty it does look like something from Classic Who

Eric

Good ol' Travis Boyle. You know, that sounds like a hell of a good name to me.

Raven Stromdans

Of all the things watching this show with you two that bring me joy...I have to admit, how much you both seem to LOVE the theme song really hits the hardest. It's positively adorable watching y'all just vibing to the music. I'm really looking forward to seeing your reaction to the making of for this series because there's definitely some talk about Chris Barrie's physical transformation explicitly for this series. This particular episode was really a roller-coaster of changes of direction...I think it was Kat that mentioned this show has a gift for going on unexpected journeys with indeterminate destinations and I feel as though this season exhibits that pattern really well. Waiting with baited breath until the next one. In the meantime, Keep Calm and Smeg On, Gallifrey Gals! I'll be here smoking a kipper until you come back with the next episode!

Mark Ten

Have you ever considered that we know so much of Rimmer's back story but not really much about Lister's except he's an orphan? He has as many bad habits as Rimmer (more outwardly disgusting, maybe), but not the source. All that slobbiness must come from somewhere!

Salix

Next week. Mr Flibble. Yay!

I'm wondering how far ahead you both must be at this point, I'm hoping you're past the worst episodes by now, but I'm still looking forward to your reactions to some of the less liked eps in series 7 and 8 (Also very intrigued about what you'll think of s9 (please watch the director's cut when you get there!). Poor Rimmer is such a mess but he's also his own worst enemy! There's some fun behind the scenes stuff for this episode in the series V documentary,

Darryl Glynn

Doesn't he make an appearance on the last episode of this season?

Wade Wallenstein

What a wonderful, lighthearted reaction compared to what you will watch on Tuesdays lol

Lizbeth Marcs

Craig Charles saying "I would have shagged him!" will always make me laugh my fool head off.

Chris Devlin

Yeah Rob Grant and Doug Naylor split after series 6. Both wrote one more novel each following up from Better Than Life. Doug Naylor basically took complete control of the show and there is a very noticable shift in both the writing and the production style from Season 7 onwards. Certainly the feeling I get from other fans my age (30s/40s) is that series 5 is where the show peaks and I would agree with that. Every episode hits and there are some fantastic moments. Though series 6 is phenomenal as well.

Cedric Bombs

Series 5 is my favourite, just banger after banger

Daniel Graham

I've been rewatching Red Dwarf on and off over 20 years... the only time I feel like the show fell off is Series 9... only 3 episodes in that series. It may be okay being that you've never seen them before, but to me that series has the least replay enjoyability. All the other seriesI really like... I think the show found a whole new stride in Series 10 till current... a slightly diff feel, but lots of good gags from the chars we have all grown to love.

TuneIntoSanityFM

Some profound lines about human nature. "Every individual's mental landscape is dominated by one drive. In some cases it might be ambition, in others greed, envy, or the desire to please." And the Inquisitor's "By their own low standards they have acquitted themselves". The writing is so good!

Bruce Bromley

Of note, four episodes of the fifth series were directed by Juliet May, the only woman to direct any Red Dwarf. The "Making of V" has her , as well as the crew and cast, talking about how she ended up there and why her time there was short.

Lizbeth Marcs

l feel like the odd person out that I liked the mini-series that revived the show, and I liked it better on re-watch. Is it the best Red Dwarf? No. But it's not this heresy against quality I've heard other people say it is. I think it's probably because when I did a recent re-watch for the first time in 5 years, I didn't even know there was more after Season 8 until I started looking up trivia online. When I found out there was more, I went right from Season 8 to the mini, so in a way I wasn't waiting 9 years for the show to pick up. The fact that Doug Naylor only barely addresses the previous series (and not even until Series X, at that) doesn't particularly bother me because...y'know...it's Red Dwarf.

Funny That

A quality well aged bottle episode.

John Veitch

It was his self-loathing monster. Fortunately we never see his lust monster.

John Veitch

I would say that 4 and 5 are "Peak Dwarf". 4 did what the previous three series had been doing and perfected it, 5 took it in exciting new directions.

James Wilson

There was some animosity between the actors in the first few seasons, where they were competing with each other for the funny lines to some extent and were not keen on one another. But this settled down by this point I think and they had become firm friends. It is mentioned in some of the documentaries I seem to recall somewhere.

Skyrous

Legend has it that after this series Craig Charles was miffed about Rimmer first falling in love and then getting oil up by a couple of pretty girls. So Craig complained to the writers that he's supposed to be the romantic lead and and he should get some romantic scene's. So the writer's said ok... Keep this in mind when you get to series 6. LOL!

Travis Boyle

I'm interested in seeing their take on Back To Earth. They won't have the anticipation or expectations of something that was gone for 10 years returning. Maybe they will just find it interesting. Hopefully both Kat and Paula have seen Blade Runner.

Travis Boyle

Oh cool you got the gifts. Glad you Gals like them. And thanks Kat for sharing the ear rings. After I mailed them I felt like a bit of a Smeg head for not getting something extra for Paula. Lol. Anyway loved the reaction. They duet of the theme at the start was great. Keep up the awesome work. (Gives Rimmer Salute).

Sebastian Bodine

As far as true feelings toward Rimmer, there's a great scene in the Promised Land that articulates it using a brilliant analogy. Also, you might start noticing Lister's growth after these last two episodes: outsmarting a time traveling, merciless, highly-advanced mechanoid and being able to a repair a broken Kryten beyond repair. Lister has over the show started showing his true potential

paul

Loved the triple "Urgh!" in unison by Kat, Paula and Lister at the idea of Rimmer's "lust monster"! 😆

DavrosXV

The Gandalf reference was even better knowing that this was long before the Peter Jackson movies came out.

David Shadwell

You only get bits and pieces in the show for Lister, yes, and it is a little confusing at times as well. The book clears it up better and puts the pieces together. Abandoned in a box under a pool table in the Aigburth Arms pub in Liverpool. He was adopted by a poor but caring family. When he was 6 his adopted father then died suddenly and that is really the last insight we get other than he started to drift through life with no real aim other than to be musical god! If you marry the books together then you get why a total drifter with little drive ends up on Red Dwarf. No spoilers but it does involve his 24th birthday, a lady's pink crimplene hat and a pair of yellow fishing waders and a passport in the name of Emily Berkenstein. The third (ish) book of the series does take a look at a different path for Lister that is very, very dark to say the least!

David Shadwell

Comedy is so subjective and it is hard to know what to say but 7 is passable with some nice moments but 8 just left such a nasty taste in my mouth for me. It is not good, in my opinion, on so many levels and downright nasty in others. I think the only episode I've liked is the one with Geraldine McEwan (no ep name as not give away spoilers) as the opening three are rambling, the other two parter is dumb and the less said about the Kryten focused ep the better! Apologies to those who like it, just not for me.

David Shadwell

The run from probably half way in Series 3 to the end of Series 5 is such quality that any show would kill for, is just a treat. Even the slight dips in quality, for me (such as Meltdown due to such a dark topic and a horrible Rimmer and The Inquisitor - too much to fit in in such a small run time) don't detract as they all contain great lines. I loved Series 6 when it came out (I was a fresh-faced 15 year old) and for years afterwards but it felt slightly off on a recent rewatch. With hindsight maybe it was the beginning of the end of the writing partnership as the strain sometimes is felt on screen. I still love it, especially a certain Emmy Award winning episode, and there are great ideas there but there is something just not quite hitting those glorious highs of 5. Hard to achieve, admittedly. But I always enjoy this one as it transports me back to High School (UK version, not sure what the US equivalent is) and me and my mates doing Computer Studies. We just used to sit there in silence, typing to each other. "Help! I have a taranshula setting up home in my joy department!" God knows how we managed to pass our Computing GCSE.....

Jasper de Vries

That does not excuse Peter Jackson from not filming Gandalf's side hustle as a potion seller.

Susan K Dailey Photography

Yeah to me series 8 is the absolute pits. Series 7 started off bad but seemed to eventually find its footing, but Series 8 took what could have been a brilliant concept and executed it in the most stupidly awful of ways. I can't comment further on series 8 without spoiling anything, but if not for a specific double act in parts of series 8, it wouldn't be worth watching at all. 9 is hated by many but I honestly find it far superior to 8. Series 10 felt like a return to form and 11, 12 and 13 are all pretty good too give or take the odd episode! And yes that specific Kryten episode is my least favourite in the entire show! It's the only reaction I'm not looking forward to.

Travis Boyle

Could of added it to the six hour extended cut.

Sebastian Bodine

I thought that was next season when things chilled out between them.

Luke Lawley

When I saw the ear ring... Kryten: "It's the one you really hate." The cat: "That's right. I can't stand it!!"

Frank Murphy

Chris and Craig definitely didn't get on in the early days. Probably a class thing and the whole way people viewed scousers

Frank Murphy

This is why I'm not fussed on series 1. It's great and everything, but the lack of action in comparison to all the other series cuts down the replay factor a lot
