Cue the Special Effects! After a hard 4 weeks of digging, most of us were hoping for a good nights sleep during the last night at Trammer House... the British summer had other ideas!

This was filmed into the early hours of our last night at Sutton Hoo, quite a spectacle if you ask us. We couldn't hold back from posting this and reliving Dani's and Naomi's excitement!

P.S. The Dome lives to join another dig!

Redwald speaks: You are summoned to return. There is much to find out here. I think the river field could tell some tales

Georgina Lau

Breathtaking! Those mounds have seen many storms.

Lewis Davis

That is totally awesome, and maybe it wasn’t the gods maybe it was the people who died there saying thank you. Just a thought. Thank you for sharing.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏻🤠

Mary Lu

Living in Wisconsin, i see storms like this on occasion. The ongoing light show With the accents of the lightening bolts is pretty exciting. And the crashing thunder adds to the drama. Quite a finish to the excavation project!

Cate Kauffman

I’m amused at how excited you all are. We get storms just like this all summer long in Virginia, US. I’m a little concerned that you all are out in it as this is an extremely dangerous thing to do. Dancing in a regular rainfall is one thing, a lightening storm is something else again. Here in the U.S. we are taught from childhood that if you can hear thunder you should be inside and away from windows and all appliances and electronics unplugged from the wall sockets to keep them from being damaged.

Carol Overrill

The gods are angry that you are going and are trying to pinpoint other places to dig.

Chrina Jarvis

That is the most spectacular, amazing, awesome finale to your so successful Sutton Hoo dig - unforgettable!!!!

Julianne Ture

YES! I don't want to accept that they're really "finished" at Sutton Hoo.

Julied123

That was spectacular!

Donna Fagnelli

Makes you wonder what prior inhabitants of Sutton Hoo thought of storms like that. We have the knowledge to know what's behind these powerful storms. Were they scared, awe-inspired?

Alana Tolstad

W-O-W! I LOVED THIS!!! THANX SO MUCH FOR SHARING!!!

Wessex-Wyvern

Thunder and lightning ... Thor wielding his hammer for you! What an omen 😀 Your work at Sutton Hoo is clearly not yet over 😉

Gareth Ross

Incredibly lucky this was on the last night otherwise it would be a complete mess on packing up the site. Incredible storm!

CCZ

Glad it happened after the dig, and that the dome survived.

Martin

We copped the same storm when we returned to the area to do a history display. What I would like to know Dani,is why you were not treating us to a rendition of Sieving in the Rain?.....Martin

Emma R

It was the singing that really made this video 😁❤️❤️❤️

John Atkinson

That reminds me of when I lived in Vermont, and thunder lasted for ten hours sometimes, rumbled away all night.

Kerry Hennigan

Oh wow, what an incredible finish to a fantastic experience at Sutton Hoo. 😶‍🌫️

Stephanie Hogan

Oh, I love a good thunderstorm. What a way to end a spectacular dig!

Neil

I am Soooo glad i wasn't still camping out there like I was for the test pitting!! :)

the polish dude

thank you for sharing this storm! Farmer Rich.

Jonathan B

Thunor giving you a rousing send-off!

William Kirkman

I was watching a lightning tracker during that storm seeing Woodbridge engulfed, and did wonder what it looked like there! And now I see 😀

Michael Sperry

Wow! Talk about going out with a bang! In the intro drum sequence, they should have replaced the last beat with a thunder crash!

Carol Harris

I was recording the storm from my back door. It was amazing to see

Janette Menhennet

thank you for sharing the experience. it felt like being there.

Lorna Dryden

Spectacular!!!!it’s the Anglo saxton gods telling you to go away lol

Lorna Dryden

Yall having so much fun!!!!🤩

Martin Young

What a finale for the Time Team dig! Glad to hear the Dome made it through 👍

Dave White

From Texas, where we have frequent thunderstorms: PLEASE tell me y'all weren't outdoors during this storm--even on a covered porch or patio or near a window is so dangerous--there is no predicting where lightning will strike. Would hate to lose any of the Time Team!

Irene Daly

Goodness! What a message from the Anglo Saxon Gods! Is it. Congratulatory greeting from our ancestors- or a message telling you its time to vacate their land…👵🏻🇨🇦🇬🇧

Irene Daly

“Old Thor with his red beard flowing, has his eyes on the furrows of the deep.” You have to be my age to remember that song we were

Irene Daly

taught in school, in the 1950’s

Lord John

careful, your beer cans are like lightning rods

Eelco Kruidenier

Wonderful enthusiasm of Dani. I love lightning as well.

Carrie Hartley

Stunning!! We missed all of that here in Zummerzet! Thanks for sharing!

Christine Lennon

A fitting end to an amazing Dig! Fabulous. See you there next year?

Carrie S

I've experienced thunder that felt like it shook the whole building. Nature is amazing!

Fiona D

Thunderstorms must be more rare in Britain? Though that looked pretty impressive to this Midwesterner. I hope you all weren't outside during all that? Be careful!

Fiona Ducrey

Is it the Gods bemoaning the fact you're leaving?

Cheryl D 🇨🇦

I love thunderstorms too! We get earth shaking ones fairly regularly here on the Canadian prairies :) Once we were tent camping in Dinosaur Provincial Park when a massive storm rolled through - that was pretty exciting and unsettling 😬 The part I like less is the destructive hail we often also get here, but I always live watching the storms.

Irish Smurfette

Thunderboomers at Sutton Hoo ftw! 😮⛈️😂❤️

Mikael Larsson

Thor really hunted giants that night. I was so cought up looking out the window I forgot to take out my camera.... The question is, did they say enaugh digging and get out of here or there are more secrets to unvaile so come back again. But a really fitting ending. What about the trench? What met the crew that was going to continue on saturday?

Jennifer Thompson

I visualise semi naked archaeologists dancing in the rain ...

Nick Butt

Rædwald is showing his displeasure that the dig has stopped.

Robin Smith

That was heart stopping thrilling. I love a noisy storm. Glad you shared the theatrics.

Nigel Bell

And you know, p'haps a couple of miles over, some poor bugger is cycling home with a tiny basket of groceries because when he left he thought "wellll, probably no more than drizzle and I do need milk!" 🫤

Bill Karoly

You should get Time Team a cameo on Art Detectives

Martin Packer

Missed that in Gothenburg, too - where I was for that final week.

Martin Packer

Queen's Dead On Time ending comes to mind. Brian May recorded a thunderstorm.

Martin Packer

Ah Eastern Seaboard Summer afternoons... 😀

Carol Harris

They are yes, this was one of the worst I've seen in a long time.

Brett W Walters

The Time Team "ritual" rain would have been good for a 3-Day Dig.... This was a month long dig so the ending needed to be spectacular!

Anja Adam

I'm a spiritually inclined person, so I guess: Whoever owned the things you dug out of the earth during two excavation periods behaved relatively peacefully during the excavations. But in the end, he or she had to give you a clear sign: "Enough is enough! Get out of here!" Ha, ha, ha...

Edward Rooks

Wow, such brilliantly dark and electrifying footage! :D It's thrilling to watch.

Sacha Messialle

Hope the time team dome was spared Zeus fury and family qu’able , great time to socialise and admire the force beauty of nature from the dry comforts of the Victorian porch .

Peter Blay

Thor was having fun throwing his hammer

Karen Quanbeck

Only a bunch of archaeologists would enjoy a violent thunder and lightning storm. We love when Mother Nature decides to give us a show.

Toria Grace

nuu xD I think they were in the old manor house likely in one of the huge doorways by the looks of it.

Toria Grace

we get storms often in UK just depends where abouts you are as to the frequency and intensity and one like the one in this video is probably less commonly experienced by people especially in super early hours when most are asleep, it's dark, and don't experience that many flashes. (our stormier seasons are when we have the shortest nights, and at night the flashes are more noticeable) so it can feel like a novel experience to most 😊 also I can assure you they are in a building with a large opening, definitely not silly enough to stand outside in a thunderstorm 😅 I appreciate the concern though as some people have no concept of the dangers of storms, but we do get them often enough to know it's not safe to play around outside during a storm 😅

Paul Adams

I wonder if the lighting was the universes way of saying there is more to discover? Come, take a look where I'm pointing. :)
