Less than a week after packing away our trowels following the end of our 2025 dig at Sutton Hoo, we're already back in the field to investigate what could be a Viking-era boat burial up in the Scottish Isles.

After more than two years of work on this project, we're thrilled to announce that Dr. John Gater, Matt Williams, and Jackie McKinley have teamed up with the Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology, Dr. Colleen Batey and Val Turner for this excavation. This is shaping up to be a truly special and potentially very rare site!

None of this would be possible without your continued support. We can't wait to share more with you soon!

What a tease! OK, waiting to see those views!

Peter Jamieson

Even finding out exactly where it is will be interesting - glad you've managed to keep it quiet!

Russell

Wow! So excited to see what's revealed during the dig. Hope the weather is kind 😊

Barry Jones

That's fantastic news. As there dose seem to be many such projects in the Highlands, that have been shelved or only worked on by weekend volunteers. I love to see how the TT crew interact with the local volunteers and help them to be more successful. Just egging them in and giving praise for r what they have achieved. Must give them a marvelous boost. Well done TT. PS, well done Tim, now an MBE, perhaps your efforts and TT's work, have been recognized eventually. Long overdue if you ask me.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🎖️🎖️🎖️🎖️

Teasers all. Can't wait, and of course to see the Sutton Hoo 2 field season. I am not an advocate of leaving something for the future, to an extent. I would like to see the River Field get in-depth excavation, and see what it is all about. Undoubtedly a new chapter in the never ending story. I am deeply envious of all those young folks who get to go on digs now. It just was not possible when I grew up to participate in this way. I have always loved history, and was fortunate enough to live in a country literally stuffed with it. A bit different here in the US. There is some fabulous history here, but it is far more ephemeral

Fab! From one boat to another! Will there be a TT programme on it?

Elaine P

Sutton Hoo for a month, now straight off to the Shetlands... the archaeolgy banquet continues! Cannot wait to see what is discovered!

Yay for this teaser. I read the news article yesterday about the landowners finding out about the anomaly during housing development planning in 2023, and asking for Time Team to take a look. I hope it is the hoped for discovery.

Elizabeth Nickless

Yay so exciting... rocks and stone so much more interesting than sand :) :)

Von Hawley

Shetland would be an amazing place to dig.

I am hearing some unrecognisable language dubbed over it. I am in Australia as per my account details and speak English.
