While much of the team is currently busy excavating in Shetland, we're still hard at work reviewing hours of footage from Sutton Hoo, looking for everything we can share with you without revealing too much of the archaeology!

In this short video, we follow Bear as he's granted exclusive access to the Bromeswell Bucket, enabling us to create a high-definition 3D model for you to explore from the comfort of your home.

We'll be posting the finished 3D model right here on Patreon as soon as it's ready, stay tuned!

The magic that Bear conjures up… amazing!

Anja Adam

Holy moly, I completely forgot to breathe!

Terri Brown

I would have dropped it! I swear Bear you must have nerves of steel, but you are magical! Well done!

Matt Bear Clark

I don’t think I did for the entire time it was out the case 😂

Juliet Smith

Really interesting! Can’t wait to see the detail. Will there be a version “rolled out flat” to get the whole panoramic view?

Wessex-Wyvern

Goodness... How long did it all take?

Irish Smurfette

This is SO cool. Soon seeing it that much closer to how it looked when made - thrilling!

Matt Bear Clark

It’s a privilege to digitally jigsaw together - the last people who looked at the complete image design / item would be those who put it in the ground.

Matt Bear Clark

The existing bucket photos - hour or so, the remaining parts, a day, doing the jigsaw element… 6 weeks maybe.

Matt Bear Clark

I still think we should have had the Pink panther music to this.

Bron Lloyd

Precious. What an honour for Bear!

Dorothy Frank

I wouldn't have thought a phone would be the go to camera for this. Does it have an app or something that's special?

KENDALL N

A story to tell the grandchildren! And you have the video proof to boot!

Peter Brown

Amazing work, Bear! would love to see an opened-out image too.

Kerry Hennigan

Well done everyone! Can't wait to see the results.

Diana Smith

This is why I love Time Team! Always sharing the other side of archeology and preservation…and the the stuff we normally don’t see!

Irish Smurfette

Exactly. I always feel like the centuries between then and now disappear in that instant when placing a hand on a stone or artifact, particularly from such an intriguing period of history. 😁 Thank you for sharing this!

Matt Bear Clark

I’m utilising the macro hi-res detail captured, (the device move-ability helps too), combined with the spatial depth data inbuilt to the lidar in a pro smart device.

Michael Sperry

It would be an immensely fun game (if someone could make it) to have a virtual bucket, where the viewer gets to "pick up" the new pieces and try to fit them to the old bucket, like a 3D jigsaw puzzle.

Donna Oldenkamp

Was that a standard iPhone? What do you call the holder?

Matt Bear Clark

Not quite, I’m utilising macro hi-res detail captured raw photos, (the device mounted in what known as a small rig), combined with capturing the spatial depth data using the inbuilt lidar scan in a pro smart device.

Matt Bear Clark

To be fair, watching me take thousands of photos isn’t often that exciting to watch 😜

Matt Bear Clark

No more so than anybody else in the team. Everyone’s got some magical skills to me, I think that’s why working as part of such a wonderful team is a privilege.

Patricia Amero

😯... and breathe. I don't know how you manage to keep your hands from shaking, but well done, you! Thank you for sharing what has to be one of the coolest jobs on site. Cheers Bear 🙌

Mea Cadwell

Did anyone else notice Bear didn't blink when he was doing the photos? I was quite curious as to how the 3D's were done - thank you for showing us this side of the process. Will we be able to see how it's done on the other side of the process?

Mea Cadwell

The National Museums Scotland did this exact thing in the Hilton of Cadboll Stone project - the stone had fragmented into over 3000 pieces. I played around on it for quite some time but only got one piece to fit. The puzzle site isn't available anymore so I assume it was able to be virtually reassembled.

Peter Horsam

Thanks Bear! Time Team has become an absolute banquet of ideas and information.

Alana Tolstad

Can you imagine what the ancients would think about our fascination?!

Steve Mikre

Brilliant! Can't wait to see the final 3D images...

Jinny Jerome

As someone who loves watching someone clear slowly a tiny spit (is that the right word?) of earth away, I can assure you some of us find it exciting.

Juliet B

It’s always so fascinating to get to see ‘behind the scenes’, thanks for sharing

Mary Lu

Amazing work!

Andy Grigg

I was there just yesterday looking at this bucket, but it seems that I'll have to make another trip in the near future once it's reconstruction is complete. It's testament to the skill and knowledge of all those involved that artefacts like this are available for us all to marvel at. It's just great.

Matt Bear Clark

Ha, no time for blinking 😂 I’ll capture some of stages of processing too

Martin Packer

Looks like it was all done with a modern iPhone Pro - with 3 cameras. Which model? (As a 16 Pro Max user it's nice to see they're up to the job.) And what 3D software are you using for postprocessing?

Russell

Wow! I could feel the tension in the room. Well done!

Mea Cadwell

Thank you! I appreciate that very much. It's not often we get to see this part of the process.

Matt Bear Clark

Often make use of the macro detail captured via a lightweight portable smartphone, using the added special data that can captured along with a raw HD image. Many people don’t realised they have a LiDAR Scanner sitting in their pockets.

Martin Packer

No, they don't. I don't have a use case like yours, sadly. I'm also wondering if the LIDAR app you use (which one?) has ShortCuts support - to smooth your workflow.

Jakub Jůzl

It looks easy but it ain't. :) I tried some photogrammetry with boundary stones but it's hard to get good uniform light outside. Couldn't get the error rate good enough in Meshroom to create a nice model. Then I looked into 3D scanners which seem to be either not very good OR very expensive - little middle ground. Plus you need a powerful computer (laptop if mobility is a factor) to pair with them. Definitely a rabbit hole to fall into.
