For two decades, the Ness of Brodgar has transformed our understanding of Neolithic Orkney. Our latest Patreon pre-release celebrates that remarkable journey, looking back at 20 years of excavation before ending with something completely new.

Fresh ground-penetrating radar survey, carried out by John Gater, has revealed an intriguing anomaly beneath the ground. At first glance, it has a strikingly familiar appearance.

Could we be looking at a previously unknown stone circle?

Or is it something else entirely?

As every archaeologist knows, geophysics doesn't provide the answers. It poses the questions. The only way to know for certain is to excavate. But that's what makes moments like this so exciting!

We've shared a couple of the radar images here because we'd love to know what think.

Take a close look at the image and share your theories in the comments. This is exactly the kind of archaeological detective work we love, and we'd be fascinated to hear your interpretations!

ill be there on july 19th . can not wait to see what they have found. maybe the oldest stone circle in the uk

Stephanie Greene

There are definitely two circles in the upper left corner, but it looks like there may be others as well??? can’t wait for the episode to find out!!

Cerian Van Gelder

Similar to Skara Brae with the stone hearth in the centre??

Jane Parker

I see two circles one with maybe a burial at it's centre, and between them but along, I see two sides of a not right angle wall

Bob Blaskiewicz

But what about the enormous white feature on the right? Sigh. My jokes are more for me than for anyone else.

Inez

Looking forward to learning to know what you will find!! Keep my fingers crossed for great results!

Peter Johnson

Oh wow, stone circle with an add on ,or is it a home in an enclosure, please, somebody arranged a dig, soon 👍

Paul Edgington

Is there any information about the depth of the slice in the image? Would it be possible to provide images of this area at different radar depths?

deadmanjones

Classic swing ball. It's Ribchester all over again.

Matt Bear Clark

John… you missed a patch 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alex Krill

What is the diameter of the circle? Could it be a roundhouse?

Alistair Dadds

Any chance you could add an image showing exactly how it overlays a satellite photo or map?

Melissa Lawrence

The coincidence if these had a solar alignment similar to Bulford…. Would cement the TT Aluminii as Awesome

Leanne Bartlett

Is there a further half circle to the south east? Approximately double the diameter of the first with 'something' at what would be the centre? It's much more noticeable on the zoomed out radar image. I can't wait to see where this goes.

David Alan Jones

In the middle of the left-hand image, there appear to be straight-lines as edges to a region where there are no or fewer speckles. Is this real or just an artefact of how the data were acquired?

Bob Greaves

It looks to me like there could be 3 or four circular features in that grouping (?) A stone circle would be great, but could it 'just' be a few roundhouse type structures?

Melissa Lawrence

There seem to be elements of the great walls. Plus in the episode there was the teaser about « maybe we could do HD-GPD » for the void / elements « next to the fence » . Are these also now visible? The rectilinear feature at the bottom of the overview image?

Kathy Calmejane

So intriguing! The one thing I'm missing is a bit of scale, I can't really get a sense of how big these features are...

Davey

I find the blank bits interesting. These images show something that is round but there is nothing in the areas adjacent. Or is that something John Gater can explain? It would be good to see the whole wider landscape geophysd. Large cows can jump.

Matt J

Could be a circular dwelling with central hearth as others have suggested, but given how low density the circular feature appears compared to the walls of the excavated domestic structures, and the rectilinear appearance of the central feature, could we be looking at a Bronze Age Ring Cairn with a central cist burial? Rare but not completely unknown on Orkney, I believe...

John Atkinson

Unfortunately, there is no scale to indicate the size of the circle, so Dig! Dig! Dig!

Hilz

I see possibly 6 circles,or bits of circles, potentially. An ancient site reused over time?

steve

It looks like a classic circle, until you consider the scale, just 8 meters diameter. It still could be a small circle. Or could it be something else. Jackie McKinnley has suggested a cost burial. Is there anything above ground still, or is it all sub-surface. SO , I guess all bet are on, and we shall have to wait and see. Whatever it turns out to be, it will be an amazing addition to that fantastic site.

Trevor Brigham

They do look like small stone circles, but apparently lacking a ditch, unlike Brodgar and Stenness. Like Stenness it has a central feature (I believe the centre of Brodgar has not been investigated). There does however appear to be something like a rectilinear building to the SE next to the white blank area with outer and inner stone facings

Melissa Spray

I am counting 5 circles there, 4 in a cluster with the most obvious northwest of the others, with a fainter one to the east, a partial one to the south, and a very faint one to the southeast, with either walls connecting them in an almost rectangular formation, or a trapezoidal something in the middle, like a courtyard, or another building...If it weren't for the proportions, I'd almost wonder if it were a much newer castle or fortification, though, the southern two overlapping a bit as they do, is an argument against. The 5th is much smaller, to the east of the other 4. Aside from that, there is what looks to me like another double house to the immediate northwest of the excavation, and further north, not too far from the edge of the radar area, a very rectangular structure of some sort. There is also, the peculiarly clear L shaped strip across the middle of the image, where there seems to be very few hits. Makes me wonder if it was an area deliberately cleared of stones and debris.

Ellen Holt

Very cool...cannot wait

Wolfgang Zenker

I guess we will find something totally unexpected, like the foundations for a WWI aerial antenna rig or a flag rig used to hoist advertising flags.

Mary

I see three possible stone circles - two about the same size and one much larger.

Andy Beale

Looks like stone circles to me. Too big to be wood.

David J. Neivandt

It would be helpful to know the alignment with the compass points

Janie Waters

In looking at the new scans, I think I counted as many as perhaps FIVE potential circles? Oh my.

Patrik Hallberg

I see at least five circles. Maybe even a double circle at the upmost one.

JessieB

Surely the suggestion of 'garden folly' is a tease? I believe that the area has always been a field . The funny thing is that we parked our vehicle right on top of the feature for all of the nearly 20 years which we visited the dig!

Menetho

After watching many Time Team episodes I am certain this is a "Grub Hut". :-)

Terry Cox

In the left-most corner, there is a uniform area that the forms a narrow neck that leads into a very broad semi-circular feature that looks a little like the base of a broch.

Terry Cox

From the clear ring at the top-most point, move down and right to a large circular mass. This then connects to the angular uniform area in the middle with two pairs of slightly flared, parallel marks of uniform colour.

Martin Packer

We don't know the dimensions... ... Small enough and we could have a roundhouse and large enough and we could have a stone circle. Likewise feature size matters: Standing stone or base for a wooden pillar?

Andy Gabriel-Powell

I'm going with the circular feature at the top being a hut circle was a central hearth. However, there are clearly other features on this geophys which I think could be an extension of the settlement.

Marcus Mellåker

Is it only me or is there a faint larger circle just down right from the clear circle? It isn’t the whole circle but maybe destroyed by plowing in the lower left curve?

David Boon

That's what I was thinking. Perhaps even 3?

Mark Lund

Could you manage another 20 years on this...it looks unbelievable.

Cheryl Gremaux

Have you had pictures drawn to show what you think it looked like at its heyday? Those pictures of other sites were very interesting.

Tony Franklin

It looks to me like there's a "square" building of some sort in the centre of the 3 or 4 circles too.

Shaun Salmon

In the light of the end-of-dig findings and looking at Johns scan again, i agree there could be an entire field of round houses.
