Today Dig Watch takes you to the very centre of the trench. You'll hear from Jackie McKinley who's excavating what's at the very heart of the neolithic building the team's uncovering. What is the archaeology telling us about what the mysterious blob on the geophysics actually is in reality?

Tomorrow is Martyn's final day on Dig Watch at the Ness of Brodgar and he wants to hear from you! Where would you like him to go on site, who should he speak to and what should he ask them? Let us know in the comments.

Could Jackie or others with Ness experience please relate the central hearth on this feature to the other hearths that have been found elsewhere in the Ness, using images? Thank you!

Kathy Carlson

Absolutely brilliant!! Thank you, Martyn!

Brooke

Can we see the finds trays in that little trailer? 🫶🏻

Simon

The first thing that I have to say is thank you to everyone. I hadn't realised quite how exciting and interesting it would be following the dig. It is a real privilege to be able to follow daily updates. One thing that I would be interested in seeing is the drone footage that John mentioned yesterday. An aerial view would be wonderful. Once again I have to thank you all.

Inez

I'm so excited every day! Thank you for reporting!

Jon Leslie-Smith

Question for tomorrow, how level is the top surface of the ring of stones? Do you know yet how deep it goes down yet? Based on its width, how much higher could it have been?

LELA L CRISWELL

Please go back to the hearth with Jacquie and look at what's been uncovered today! Is there another hearth underneath? Any pottery or something else to date the hearth? Date?

Dorothy Africa

Are there any traces of track ways by which people would have come to the site, or would it all have been sea route traffic, both probably?

Flo Brookes

Hi, is there any environmental work going on, finding really small remains as they come to the surface?

Mark & Jill Jefson

I think we should do an extended tour of the Orkney Brewery. I'll buy.

Gabriele

Hi Martyn, thank you (and of course your cameraperson) for the updates, which are very interesting. I understand that Dig Watch can't spill all the secrets, or the main Time Team documentary would get rather boring. But could Mark or Jackie estimate a timeframe of when this building was in use, and if it is contemporary with (or perhaps earlier or later than) the other structures on the Ness? Thank you!

Davey

Where is the door? How does the structure relate to the sun?

John Atkinson

I assume that the hearth would have been emptied during the day so most bits of pottery would also have been discarded? Have we any idea if the fire was kept alite during the night?

Anne Marie Anderson

Not to brag, but my family and I just happened to have our summer vacation in Scotland this year and we traveled over 7,000 kilometers from Portland, Oregon to Orkney!

Jill Bray - Author

I'm not sure if you have a drone on site, but it would be great to see an aerial view of what you have uncovered.

Ian Holmes

Jackie is interesting as always

Jakub Jůzl

So hear me out, this could have been temporary accommodation for a particularly big neolithic party that went down at the Ness. 😀

deadmanjones

Can we get an on camera piece walking from the main complex dig site to this site to give a sense of scale?

Geoffrey Zoeller

Loved John ditching out of the frame at minute 8. 😁

W Pierce

Thanks team for the wonderful work you're performing, including Martyn's engaging updates! Could you walk down to the Loch of Stenness near 'Diggers Rest', where Martyn interviewed Mark Edmonds on Day 12?? As he said much of the Ness could be underwater, it would be interesting to view the entire site from the Loch-side. Dorothy mentions sea traffic below and it would be interesting to know whether there are any piers or boat archaeology which survived in the Loch.

Sherryl Whitehead

Hi Martin here’s a Question for Jackie is there a likelihood of a burial or significant ceremonial deposit such a stone tool etc in the hearth down below where you are digging or is it too shallow? Incidentally I regularly worked as a volunteer at the Ness and I live in the Barossa Valley South Australia. So sad not to be there this year 🥲

Anne Leaver

On one of the curb stones surrounding Jackie’s hearth - did I see some fine lines as the camera passed across? May have been trowel marks.Loving the daily reports

Lynn Marsh Freeman

Very exciting to see these bits of archaeology in almost real time and up close. I’m thankful for all members of Time Team and glad to join with thousands of other fans in being a part of the Team as a Patreon member.

Simon Barnes

One thing I haven’t heard (maybe I missed it) is whether the stones around the outside are flat or do they go much deeper? I think I saw in one of the shots that the stones are deeper than it looks in the initial excavation.

landscaper

Could we have a follow-up on the stone Dani found. Also like Dorothy mentioned have you traced any trackways to see how far people travelled to the site and from where?

Rachael Bainbridge

Having visited Brodgar a few years ago and being a Time Team fan, I am finding this so, so exciting and riveting. We visited Westray and Rousay this May and believe me, there is nowhere that grabs you for history, scenery and people as much as Orkney does. Absolutely amazingly ethereal place - you are doing a fantastic job and I am so jealous!🥰

Kathryn Phelps

I'd guess that will be done in post production ready for the actual edited and finished episode

David North

Looking very Clint Eastwood in that wind Martin

Peter Horsam

It does seem that people want to know everything about everything all at once! The documentation and analysis phase of an excavation can take many months. As they often say 'It's all to play for' at this stage.

Pam

Love seeing the story gradually emerging with each sweep of the trowel.. Any clues yet of the kind of structure we are looking at? Are there any comparable sites on Orkney(or anywhere else)? Keep on going, I am hooked.

David Alan Jones

It would be interesting to see an overlay of the geophysics plot with a drone-photo of the excavated region.

Lilli Haicken

Oh, not a grave, a hearth. Jackie, you are amazing. Everyone is amazing. Vivat Time Team!!!

Frank Woods

Great stuff - thank you! Can you tell us what is in the fancy metal suitcase that is sometimes beside the edge of the dig? A special bit of kit? John's sandwiches and emergency beer supply?

Chris Berwick

Give Norma and Paul a pair of trowels and get them working lol

Ann Wagner

Thank you. That sounds sensible.

Brett W Walters

Well, we always wanted the "behind the scenes" of TIME TEAM. I am so enjoying all these updates, and all the conversations with the TEAM.
