Dig Watch returns for the final time this week as the wind picks up on Orkney. Martyn's getting answers to the questions you've been asking here on Patreon. He also speaks to Jackie McKinley again, who's continuing her delicate excavation of the hearth at the centre of the trench. Whilst filming today's Dig Watch we captured the moment one of the archaeologists uncovered something remarkable which Jackie was later able to identify. Can you spot the moment it happens?

Where do you think the entrance to the building could have been? Let us know in the comments.

The archaeologists are having a well-earned rest over the weekend but will be back to work on Monday. We'll keep you updated on their progress here on Patreon. Thanks for your continued support.

Thank you so much for following up questions! Martyn, you have brought us in wonderfully.

Norma

Loved getting the Dig Diary updates while we were away from the site and it was lovely to meet the team in person yesterday. Safe travels home, Martyn & Karen!

Oh my! What a long distance between the original dig and this new one!

W Pierce

Great job Martyn! Fantastic interview with Jackie and also Ann!

Anja Adam

My brain is doing somersaults again... The hearth/fire pit was clearly used, but otherwise there are relatively few finds. Pondering, pondering... Could this circular structure have been some kind of temporary shelter during the construction work on Structure T e.g?

Davey

Thank you for the answer to my question. It is so good of the Ness of Brodgar team of experts and diggers to share all of this with Time Team and us distant viewers.

Jane

Thank you Martin, A great insight into the work that goes on. Your enthusiasm is inspiring

Jill Bray - Author

Thank you so much for answering my question Martyn. It was brilliant to hear my name mentioned on Dig Watch - fame at last! 😂

Kathy Bryan

Just wanted to say thank you, Martyn and Karen, for all the updates. They have all been so informative and your enthusiasm for the site is quite infectious.

Gabriele

Thank you for asking Jackie my question, Martyn! I got more information out of this than I had dared to hope for, and now I've got a dozen more questions - but so have you all. :-) Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

Jeff Lanam

There’s been mention of something going on in Shetland. Any information about that or is it being kept hush-hush?

deadmanjones

I'm adding dig watch assistant director to my cv

Jo

Thank you Martyn for your enthusiasm and explanations. I visited Orkney in 2019 and it’s marvellous to see TT’s endeavours. I’ve been to Sutton Hoo on several occasions during the 2024/5 digs and really enjoyed seeing an excavation in progress.

Carole Foster

Thank you for taking us on your adventure, Martyn!

Melissa Lawrence

Or the possible viking boat? Sites of importance tend to be kept under wraps until secured

JessieB

Great stuff, Martyn. Thank you 🙂 Looks like Orkney has snared you too.

DIANA R NELSON

Thank you so much Martyn for sharing your experience on the Ness.

Edward Rooks

Thank you Martyn, Thank you Time Team. How exciting!

Jon Leslie-Smith

The members questions worked really well as a format, the immediacy of the exchange between yesterday and today really brought us closer to the live dig. Walking between the sites at the start was really useful for helping me with the scale. And thanks for including my query later too.

Neil Scott

Im in Orkney next week... is the dig on all week?

Charr Skirvin

I remember when my husband and I discovered the old Time Team series and ended up watching every episode. It's wonderful seeing how far Time Team has come and how much respect and enthusiasm they get now. We're watching this dig with bated breath; what will be found and how will it be interpreted?

Charr Skirvin

PS: I hope at least one of the team makes it to the Orkney Library and Archives. I've been following them on Facebook for quite some time (being a retired librarian myself.)

Elizabeth MacLellan

Thanks Martyn thanks for all the updates. It's really amazing to see it get uncovered.

Mark & Jill Jefson

Martyn, thank you. Has anyone ever mentioned that you look a bit like Clint Eastwood?

Kerry Hennigan

I've loved these dig watch clips. Great job of hosting, Martyn.

Ali Spencer

Thank you Martyn and crew! Great to feel part of it and to see all the amazing work being done.

Russell Neilsen

Can we please get a map of the ness showing where each structure and trench was in relation to where this dig is. I know one was shown in the original video but it would be good to see the current dig included.

Rick Doner

I love that Jackie doesn't just "stick" to her specialty, and does all aspects.

Fred To

Thank you for this excellent walk-around of the site by Martyn, which gave me such a clear idea of the size and goings-on at this site. This walk-around has, for the first time in my viewings of Timeteam presentations, given me a very clear idea of the size and relative positions of the dig; in fact, this video should be a model and template for further presenting any other digs, as I've often been very confused about the orientation and relationship of parts of digs and it's relationship to its surroundings, because the videos show close-ups and details , and the cameras often swing around so much that I'm utterly confused as to orientation. Thanks so much for this very clear description of the site, which has given me a much clear idea of the dig and surrounding areas.

Francesca Bircher

Thank you so much for the daily Dig Watch episodes! At 5:40 one of the archaeologists lifted a flat stone and looked quite surprised … I wonder what was under the stone 😃

Yehsure

Thank you Martyn and crew. Loved these dig watch episodes.

Tony

Thank you for your excellent updates Martyn. Safe journey home.

Mark Vent

I have been loving these! Thanks so much Martyn - I have my ideas on what we are looking at - let’s see if any of the experts mention it 😊

Pam

Thanks Martyn, great job bringing the dig to life!

Martyn Williams

They haven't, but I'll take it! It's amazing what the blustery conditions on Orkney can do! (Martyn)

Elisabeth

Martyn, you've been so adept at darting about the site, talking to different people, noting this and that - just what I would have want for myself if I were there (and privileged enough to step into trenches and talked to TT superstars). Thank you for being my eyes and ears. I have enjoyed the immediacy you've brought. Archaeology is such slow, grinding work often without any spectacular and definitive finds, more the accretion of tiny details (NOT Instagram or TV ready). Your enthusiasm bridges that gap.

Jeff Lanam

Thank you! Interesting!

Sonja Borst

That was an excellent series Martyn and Karen! Sorry to hear you will not continue next week, but I am sure we will be updated in another good way. Love this <3

Casey Frend

Martyn I’m loving your updates! Thank you 😊

Casey Frend

But also, can the Time Team merch shop include a range of Jackie’s trademark skulls?? I love them!

Julia

Great work! Thank you for taking us around

Elaine P

Thank you Martyn, your Dig Watch has been great. I think I will miss the dig by a day or 2, but your coverage is certainly the next best thing to being there, a huge thank you to the team for answering all our questions. Can't wait to see what they conclude was going on there.
