Time Team are deeply saddened to have learnt of the passing of our dear friend, Victor Ambrus, on 10th February 2021.

Having talked to the family this evening, Tim was told that this wonderful man had a peaceful end with his family around. They agreed to this announcement.

As one of the founding members of the Time Team family he was loved and respected by the whole team. He was an essential part of the team’s success, who brought the past to life. He was an exceptional and unique artist and a wonderful human being. He will always be in our memory and forever part of the Time Team story.

Our thoughts are with his family at this time. May he rest in peace.

He was an amazingly gentle and calm man, exceptional creative artist that inspired my mind and heart to connect and feel closer to the likelihood of life back when, for me and many I expect. Given Victor's sufferings during the war, my god he is a miracle and honorable man whose passing came to early. I bet it was due to the plandemic by Governments, health bullshit propaganda and WEF EXtinctionist, Klaus/Hitler's son or some god dammed thing. Much love from Canada, daughter of a British mum and second generation Brit-Canadian homesteader dad. Oh the stories he could of told us...but obviously they were too traumatizing for my front line WW2 soldier, dad and successful mechanic who'd of thrived with the association of The Band Of Brothers.

I was always impressed when Victor was obliged to update his images as new information came in. He never made a fuss. I suspect St Peter has already requested a quick sketch.

His drawings were sometimes the best part of the show for me as a kid 😟, his style and flexibility? Can that even be recreated?

Mark Cooke

Some one had left the pub we do not notice. We buy them a drink a leave it in the wood for when they return. They do not return, we have things we want to say but the time has past they have past. We would gladly pay to leave a drink for them waiting on the bar. Time has passed they have passed and we have memories that live on. Rip victor we never met and I miss you

So sad to learn of Victor’s passing. I admired his drawings on Time Team very much. His artwork added another level of understanding of how people may have lived in the past. I especially enjoyed his sense of humor when he drew Tony, Mick and Phil as monks and the like. My sympathy to his family and friends.

Dr Andrew Jeffrey

So sad to hear of Victor's passing. His quiet serenity amid the media circus was a delight, as was his remarkable talent for interpreting the evidence from the dig in such a vibrant way. And then there was his infinite patience when told by Tony that his beautifully executed roundhouse was actually a sheep pen and he would have to start all over again. A very full life well lived. Rest in Peace, Victor.

David Luhman

Deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Martin Stevens

Although Victor was barely never heard on TT, he spoke through his incredible images. What was dug by Phil, Raksha, Carenza and the others, what was explained by Mick and described by Tony, Victor brought to real live. Victor, your journey just begun ... may it last.

Carole Cox

I am so saddened by this. I was hoping Tim was going to visit with him! Such a gifted human being who brought the sites to life.

sigterm

Just a suggestion: What about a memorial video of Victors best TT-images?

Kelly Cloney

Victor was an avid Tolkien fan and illustrator as well!

Ellen Woodrow

This is such sad news. Victor's art was such a great part of Time Team. Whenever I saw him there drawing at a dig site, I couldn't wait to see his interpretation of what the site had and people had looked like. As a fellow artist with a love of history, I truly admired his work. My deepest sympathy to his family. Victor will be well remembered by us all.

Todd Gillespie

Fae Townsend

💔 watching Victor work was a magical part of the show for me. I hope he knew how many people he'd inspired.

Michelle James

What an amazing artist - so sad to hear of his passing.

d m

My wife and I both enjoyed seeing his work on Time Team. She in particular wondered if she could find a collection of his work. When I saw the book available on the website, I bought it for her (not that I haven't looked at it as well). It was a pleasure to see the archaeology put to life in his art.

Phelim McIntyre

Very sad news. A real gentleman who was a delight to meet, who will be truly missed.

Mark Shayler

I loved his art.. especially the ones he had to keep re-drawing when the team changed their minds on the dig they were doing! Never a complaint from Victor, he just carried on regardless!! His art will keep his memory alive for many generations to enjoy and learn from!!

Neil Baxter

Victor's artwork was always a highlight of the programme for me. He seemed so quiet and understated, just getting on with his work in the background... and admirably calm when the archaeologists revised their vision of a site when his work was nearly complete!

Robert P Saunders

Very sad news indeed. He bought time team alive with his pictures, a great artist and will be sadly missed.

Heather James

I was very sorry to read this news. As an artist I always admired Victor's artwork. I thought his ability to bring a scene to life was remarkable and the calm way he was prepared to make any number of changes in a hurry when presented with new evidence was a masterclass in how to work under pressure. RIP

Rosemarie Gant

Very sad news. We loved Victor's art and in fact only looked the other day to see if there were any of his art works published. I was delighted to find the book available and have it on my wish list.

Lyn Howe

Very sad to hear this. Such a lovely man with a great talent.

Richard Moss

This is so sad. Time Team did some amazing work with graphics, but for me nothing brought a site to life like Victor's drawings. To see him sketching alongside the trenches was magical and you knew he'd produce something that would capture something essential about the site, the past and the people.

Gastromoped

That is sad! I don't know, if that's the case, but I always assumed the Sevso Treasure TTSpecial was his "fantasy site" - that was my first TT ever, just followed a link in the comment section of online news in the wake of the Sevso return battle. (And I'm absolutely sure this was a hard positive kick for the effort! Thank you all for that!) So he brought me here... Nyugodj békében!

Christopher

having watched all of Time Team's episodes on YouTube, some more than a few times. When I learned of Mick's death, it felt like a favorite Uncle had passed. I have that same feeling now. Rest in Peace Victor.

Paul Wilkinson

That's such sad news. My thoughts are with his family. His fantastic artwork really helped to bring the digs and finds to life. First Mick, now Victor, is it odd I feel like I've lost friends? ☹️

Connie L Merchant

Victor's calm presence on Time Team will be missed, along with his distinctive drawings. I am saddened he has passed away. Sending condolences to his family and Time Team friends.

Laura Ann Flynn

Victor was so very talented! He brought magical artistry to Time Team. My husband and I are very saddened by the news of his passing. May memories of Victor be a comfort to his family and friends. Rest In Peace, Victor.

Such sad news. Victor's drawings were able to bring the past to life in a way that no computer generated image quite could.

Chanelle Troedel

So very sad to learn this news. We always look forward to his drawings when we watch episodes. My heart goes out to Victor's family.

Patricia Crumrine

And on the computer before all the digital aids. People, animals, landscapes, buildings of any era, pots from fragments; anything asked of him. I'm always in awe.

Patti McCarthy

Ah, such terribly sad news. The world is less bright and wondrous now that Victor has left it. Often when I think of TT episodes, it's Victor's drawings that come to mind--breathing life into the past and allowing his audience to experience it so richly in the present. Deepest sympathy and condolences to Victor's family and loved ones. His brilliant talent, artistic vision, and kind and gentle demeanor will be sorely missed in this world. Sleep well, Victor, and rest in peace. We will miss you.

Gayle Reid

Absolutely LOVED his artistic style!!! His faces had such enormous character!! Fell in L❤️VE w/ Victor ... Sweet Peace, Victor

Stan Hughes

He always seemed like a lovely man and you can tell members had real affection for him in their interaction. I always look forward to seeing him on the program; I enjoyed him cheekily drawing e.g. Mick, Robin and Tony into the scenes at times! :) My young step-daughter was very sad when I told her yesterday of his passing; we often watch TT together and she likes Victor as well. We will miss him! My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Irene Daly

Everyone will miss Victor. He had a quality that is all too rare in people today, and that was humility. What a talented artist he was- and such a gentle soul.

Rick Skinner

Sad news. His art always fleshed out the archeology. 😕

David Bond

Victor’s beautiful and important drawings were always a highlight of every single episode. I would love to be able to buy prints of a book of his extraordinary work.

Martin Stevens

Thanks for making the lovely tribute to Victor, was wonderful to reminisce ❤️

william monteith

Loved his drawings and artistic vision while doing it so seamlessly. Will be so sadly missed and certainly never forgotten. I have a heavy ❤. Such an important cog in a well greased time team machine.

Will Chapman

What impressed me were those times when he had just completed a detailed scene and was told the latest evidence indicated the site was in an earlier period meaning he had to redraw the scene......

Jenna Chanthavisay

He was such a treasure. I love how he was able to not only capture what the past may have looked like in any given place but also add the likeness of everyone in Time Team into his drawings. I have always loved watching him draw on the show. He will be a very missed part for our future Time Team Crew. I really wish you could restock his art book on your store! I have been wanting and waiting to buy one since the day you all started this Patreon but it has always been sold out. I would love to have that piece Victor, not only for myself, but as an Art and History book for my young children to reference in the future.

Lynn Macintyre

I too would treasure a book of his work. As a watercolourist I have done some sketching, and his work is inspiring.

Sarah Holloway

What a wonderful tribute to Victor none of us will ever forget him .

Timothy Short

So sad to hear that Victor Ambrus has died. He will always be remembered. Wonderful tribute from his Time Team Colleagues.

Philip Corlis

What a loss... a wonderful man and an astounding artist.he brought the past to life with his many skills. May he Rest In Peace and may his family find comfort in this memories of him.

Tanner Bramell

He was a blessing to the show and to all the viewers. We always looked forward to his depictions.

jilly Davies

I always waited for Victor to pull everything together and bring it to life. I loved the little human details he put in, children running with a dog, a woman lifting a baby. Great loss.

Morgan Connor

It was always wonderful to see a representation of what had been dug up - so that it became real with an illustration of the site and the people as they may have been all those ages ago - it stuck in your mind and made the "finds" even more special. A great loss to us all.

BJ Hollensteiner

Great artist!!! His pictures brought the sites and people who lived there alive!

Deborah Shoup

He was a lovely man and his art was so very special to me. Thank you Victor. See you soon.

Corny Brenk

Is there a book available of all his sketches from Time Team episodes? This really should be published. Where have all those sketches gone?
