For the final location of this opening round, Carenza Lewis shares a Lincolnshire site that is literally brimming with archaeological anomalies – an Iron Age hoard depository, a Roman barrow, a potential Anglo-Saxon settlement, a deserted Medieval village, a Bishop's palace and now... a modern University campus complete with artificial lake!

In fact, there's so much going on that Tim calls it an 'archaeological theme park'. We've given it the slightly more poetic name of 'palimpsest' – a favourite term of Mick Aston to describe a complex site with interweaving developments from various time periods layered atop of one another.

Situated on Carenza's home turf at the University of Lincoln, it might seem an obvious contender and a safe bet. Yet with so many potential targets to choose from, can the team sharpen the focus to one key area? As always, let us know what you think in the comments below.

It sounds really promising. With so much archeology it would be potentially a treasure trove of find.

Chris Hughes

Sounds fascinating and also true classic time team material, with so much going on and “only three days to find out”. Would definitely top my list.

Mark Cooke

Does it all need doing at the same time ? 8

Sarah Holloway

What a wonderful site it sounds so interesting .

Stan Hughes

A lot of good pubs in the area John!? Well that's settled then! perfect for archaeology :)!

Jill Hobbs

Sounds wonderful, I would personally be interested in the Anglo Saxon (early medieval!) settlement. The Roman of course would also be interesting.

Michael J Gilday

As a viewer of Time Team I don't really see why you could not produce more than one episode on a site like this over a period of time. This way you could target different locations with different questions and build a much broader picture culminating in a fourth espisode with conclusions. It would make for a very interesting series.

Stephen Lambert

I had a strange parallel spring to mind. Carenza taking Tony Robinsons "gung ho" approach and

Stephen Lambert

Helen taking Mick's role of not taking rapid action.

John Matthew IV

This sounds like an amazing site but too much for a classic Time Team Three-Day Dig. I think we should try something smaller, more focused first.

Carole Cox

I look forward to finding out what focus TT would select.

William F. Campbell

From frozen Texas this site should be seriously considered but any decision begs more details than the time allowed. To be slightly humorous, if someone could do a PHD on pubs within 30 minutes travel from possible dig sites a whole lot more might be done quickly and provide a real tourist attraction as well!

Emma R

Very interesting idea Michael!

David Boon

Sounds like a great site but where to dig and to what end? If some work could be done to narrow the focus it could be a great dig.

Anne

It sounds a fascinating site with so many possibilities to chose from. Narrowing it down will be a tremendous job, but I would go for finding out if there had been an Anglo Saxon community there. Perhaps more than one visit would be the answer.

Irene Daly

Anglo Saxon has my vote after seeing “The Dig” !

SEAN STANLEY

Need to focus on a particular subject as the site would be too overwhelming. As suggested by the comments by the team a narrative is needed. To pursue on an earlier period would be beneficial. To cover all aspects would indeed try the team's proesse. A true test of pedigree for the team.

Philippe Fuentes

why not having a 3 episodes serie...? the first episode on the relation between the Iron Age deposit and the Roman settlement, then an episode on the Saxon period and the transition from roman to saxon. and the last episode focusing on the medieval part of this site, with also linking it to the saxon site.

Dale Wilson

What ever is there sounds like like a great story to be told and I would love to hear it, Thanks guys

Ian Holmes

Being a Lincolnshire Yellowbelly born and raised. I’m always in favour of anything from my home county.

DL Baskin

I think it would be incredible to uncover more relating to Anglo-Saxon history

Bob Pockney

Definitely has a lot of promise. Do need to narrow it down to something specific.

Paul Middleton

Sounds like another great challenge with lots of questions to answer i think its those questions that need to be sorted first.

Ray Roberts

I think it sounds like a fascinating site that just requires a very specific question to be investigated. Without the background of previous digs and finds it's pretty hard to provide a viewpoint other than to say that it seems to provide a lot of opportunity for finding exciting new information. And 2 minutes on the pubs of Lincoln sounds fully warranted...

Jon Colcord

This place sounds like something that would have worked for one of the old Time Team Live things. I can picture everyone running around from trench to trench, out of breath, and excited for an update. Logistically, those shows must have been hell, so I can see why it’s hanging at a 6 for a couple of them. Interesting possibilities, with the reality of finds in the allotted time unlikely.

Robert Wise

If the site is good for geophys that might decrease the time required to get significant information?

Paul Brekke

I'm with Carenza on this suggestion, as far as both archeological and viewer entertainment potential. It sounds like you couldn't stick a trowel anywhere without finding something interesting, which would make for great TV :-) What is possible to resolve during a three day dig, however, is a somewhat different question, and focusing on some specific research questions could probably help that. I really hope to see TT doing _something_ at this site, whether it's a tree-day dig, a series, a special, or whatever. You've already touched on different ways TT could bring some other sites along - could something be started or value added by TT contributions now that would make it possible to return for a three-day dig later, for example?

Robert Boudreau

While an extremely tempting site, I think for a first dig, or one of the first, it's too much to go at. One thing that concerns me is in all likelihood there's going to be a lot of new diggers unfamiliar with how things are done on a TT dig. One thing TT has been noted for in the past was producing high-quality post-dig information and reports. To keep that standard, it would be a lot to throw at a new team that doesn't have it's sea-legs yet. I think a site this large and complex would just be too much right now.

deborah

speaking of which: does anyone know where those can be viewed? Amazon has something like 20 minutes of the Windsor Castle episode but I can't find full episodes-- or even a full accounting of the live programs-- anywhere.

Kay Theriault

That sounds like an interesting site, but perhaps not for the first dig out the door. It sounds quite fascinating and complex, but perhaps letting the new crew gel and become accustomed to working on important, but less complex sites might be a good 'win' to get things going again. But certainly, keep this one on the list!

Lee Costello

I would be really interested to learn more from the medieval village on the site

Liz Dyson

you could do a complete Time team/Dig village series on that site and help the university with the project. Helen talks about someone doing a PHD. I know Lincoln a bit. I completed the first year of an humanities degree with the O.U. I have emailled Carenza about doing Archeology before this patreon was set up and again a few weeks ago. I'm currently confined to bed possibly for a few months due to my disability, Although im not qualified to do a real PHD I would genuinely like to offer to help you all do some online reasearch if at all possible. I could maybe do it under the supervision of Stewart or Carenza.

Phelim McIntyre

I am with Stuart and Helen on this. Yes there are a lot of stories but it could be really easy to keep getting sidetracked. If there is late Iron Age activity there what came before it? Yes this would be a viewer pleaser but I can see people disappointed due to no form of end unless handled very carefully.

Paul Willetts

Does anyone know what the archaeological research framework for this area says? You can only excavate once so it needs to answer current questions or else it’s better left alone for now.

Zoe Propper

"..... and we have just 3 months to do it in." Sounds like a great site, the early medieval aspect would be great to do.

william monteith

Think someone mentioned it already but certainly its a contender for a live special based over 4/5days.

JUDITH COOKE

I do so love these discussions - they bring back what Time Team was like and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Gareth Hayes

It's available online on the EMHERF (East Midlands Historic Environment Research Framework) website.

Carlos Rendon

I have always been fascinated with roman architecture, however to observe the architecture of another civilization would be so equally interesting.

Larissa Spiker

I love that you could dig anywhere! And even if TT doesn't dig there, I hope someone does before it gets destroyed in the next phase of the Uni's life.
