Having completed the first round of Site Wrestles with the Originals, we take a look at some sites from a slightly different perspective: the role of the Producer.

In this next selection, Series Producer Tim Taylor talks through the contenders with Development Producer Jim Mower. Their objective is marry up the two key considerations of any potential site: the archaeological research question, and the story that grips the viewer.

In his former Time Team day job, Jim had to pitch his ideas to Tim. But the tables have turned, and now it is Tim who is trying to convince Jim of the merits of each site!

First of all, they return to the Iron Age Settlement in Cornwall that has already been discussed. Does Jim share the enthusiasm of the Originals?

I promise I AM listening to your discussion, Jim, but please tell me where you got your lovely ‘cardigan’? I’ve been searching for one for my grandson!

Carole Cox

Jim will HATE this but I am taken back to his forlorn face during his 24 hour "jail time". That aside, interesting to hear him organize an approach to this site.

Mark Cooke

I get a better feel for this sight and what the program might look like . The fogou element is there but not the dominant part. I enjoyed this

Matthew Adams

The thing I like about this site is that I think it is pretty much guaranteed to make a great programme, even if the central research questions people have been suggesting are only of middling interest (to me!) I do worry about "the fogou" as the B-line/cameo. Unless you can think of some particularly interesting way to explore its construction or use, I worry that we end up with "mysterious music playing behind shots of a dark tunnel" that doesn't really advance the narrative at all. Maybe some kind of demonstration of preservation (bury something in a similar environment 6 months before the show and see what happens to it?) Or the kind of lively, practical enthusiasm Andy Currant used to bring to the Palaeolithic, rather than "wooooEEEEEooooEEEEooo"?

Punished Brains

So wonderful that you all are so open about the process! Fascinating to see.

William F. Campbell

What a fascinating look into the work that it took to produce so many seasons! I respect and admire the people who brought the show to air. I will start looking for names in the credits. For me, this is a time to be silent and learn rather than make comments about substance.

Andy H

Very interesting insight into the process but please, please, please, no pointless cameos with people dressing up and "pretending". Showing the processes of smelting, carving, potting etc. is fine but pretending to be a Victorian prisoner, a Roman slave or a medieval nunn? Nooooo

Dale Wilson

It's wonderful to see this collaboration, a handing over the reins so to speak. Thank you

Anne Collinson

Very interesting to hear this. Can someone tell me which episode had the slingshot demo? I think I missed this one!

Anne

Very interesting to get the views from the production side of the programme.

Bob Pockney

I have to agree. Seeing poor Matt doing this stuff was painful.

Paul Middleton

I must admit I wasn't to excited about a fogou but in relation to this site and the questions it poses it gets my thumbs up.

Robert Wise

Thank you both for sharing this perspective! It is quite enlightening! The "primary question" appears to be such an essential piece. Seems to me there is one aspect of most locations which might add interest if explored … Some sort of estimate of how many people it took, and how long, to construct a major feature ( like ring ditches?). And then there’s humor!

Zoe Propper

Such an interesting discussion. This site is one of my top 3, the order of which keeps moving around. Also fingers crossed that if it was Cornwall it might coincide with then I am down there so I could pop over and sneak a look 😉

Sarah Holloway

I am really interested in this site and it would be a fascinating area to explore .

Eggs Ackley

I do very much enjoy these site wrestle exchanges and hope they continue. All of the sites presented have excellent potential but his one does seem particularly juicy as a story and on the practical outcomes. Has it yet been revealed when (not if) the episodes are aired, where will they be available to view...UTube, etc.?

Mark Lund

So, as Jim says, 'I keep hearing Tony's voice', (or words to that effect. Who may be the presenter/narrator? Any clues..or could Tony still a possibility?

Alex Gregory

I do hope it’s Tony, however as this “new” Time Team is basically crowdfunded then I do worry unless a tv company picks it up then Tony maybe too expensive. Unless he comes back just simply because he loves TT and archaeology. As he has often said.

Melissa Rybb

I went back and watched Gear Farm, S9 E7, so I could see what they're referring to. I still really like the sound of this site and the research questions.

Unrelated to this exact video, but I stumbled on short interview clips with Tim and Mick from years back, where they discuss test pits, maps, field walking and more. These short clips are quite hidden on Youtube and don't have many views. How about re-editing them into a new, small feature that you could be re-published on Patreon and Youtube, and at the same time used to remind viewers of this Patreon initiative? Also, since I'm already typing: what's the relationship, if any, between this effort and Dig Village? Should/could the Dig Village Youtube channel be integrated with the new TT initiative?

Paul Brekke

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux_kEyWCSbc (Mick on test pits) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHZrXiV4sGc (Tim interviews Mick, pt 1) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHn2hKGUgdA (Tim interviews Mick, pt 2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpqcvdK7RPY (Tim interviews Mick, pt 3) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJX91lko7Jw (Mick on monasteries) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmL5URP5Cek (Mick on churches) I think these could be re-packaged and re-published and brought to the attention of more people now that Time Team has more momentum again, and it could serve a a very nice reminder of the good, old days while tying that together with what Tim & the gang are doing now. Tim, as far as I am aware, was invisible (for all intents and purposes) in the old Time Team TV series, and people outside of this little community does not know what his connection to TT was and is. These clips provide a link between the old and the new, in a way, and are also kind of TT "bonus material" for fans, in my view. Garret Olds

We can only hope. I like to think he would want to come back for it

Steven Meeks

I remember the show about a fogou and was disappointed. The other aspects sound fascinating. I always enjoyed Stewart's analysis of the landscape and John Gator's magic and thus think this would be a great site for them.

Elizabeth G Schulz

I too hope that Tony returns as presenter on the new TT.

Ray Roberts

Perhaps an opportunity to use underwater GPR to scan the shallow water near the site... something TT has never done and if they were using the water for trade perhaps a chance to find some evidence.

A Bleese

For me the question is - is this the place that gave Britain its name? We may have been so named because we were the tin islands. This might be where the tin came from.

Christopher Samuel

I suspect it was series 9 episode 7 "Iron-Age Market, Helford"

Justin L Williams

Sounds like a very interesting site and a very nice part of the country - would love to see the fogou!
