As the old expression goes, 'Call a spade, a spade'.

But being the good sport that he is, Matt Williams has kindly offered our Patrons the chance to name his trusty grandfather's spade, and we've narrowed it down to three options.

We know: it's not big and it's not clever, but it's just a small bit of Friday fun, so please make your vote count in the upcoming poll and we can settle this matter once and for all.

Matt has just made the following confession to us: "I'm kind of getting invested in this now" so please choose carefully and remember that with great power comes great responsibility.

To help inform your decision, Matt has suggested a few thoughts for consideration. Simply imagine him saying the following phrases:

"This looks like a job for ______!"

"I'll just grab trusty ______!"

"I never go anywhere without my beloved ______!"

Emily Davis

The Terf-inator or Lemmy (because it’s the Ace of Spades)

Phillip Siviter

Spadey MacSpadeyface? I’ll get me hat.

Michael

Sam ( as in Sam Spade). Get it?

Mike Darby

Surely it must be Phil?

John Atkinson

Joseph or Samuel because most of our grandfathers were called those names.

Tuggy

It looks seasoned and used. It could probably tell a lot of time team stories

Doug Lucey

A Spade or Spade ... as they are called 🙂

Elise Norwood

Would Matt like a name that honors his grandfather?

Mark Bousfield

Trigger. Sorry, an Only Fools & Horses joke for those under 40.... it's had 5 new handles and 2 new blades, but it's still the same spade.

Spud Man

Aston Martin

Nina Surr

Fido, because it's faithful and he loves it like a pet.

Martha Berryman

Honor your Grandfather: Bonum, acutus, rutrum a Avus

Paul Garner

"And that's what I've done. Maintained it for 20 years. This old spade has had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in its time."

Paul Miller

Matt's spade is a king among spades. One of a digger's best aids. It belonged to Granddad, Six new handles it's had, And at least half a dozen new blades!

Eggs Ackley

How about “Back Phil”

Steve Mikre

Matt looks so comfortable in front of the camera...

Peter Carter

Bit worried about my suggestion as I notice one of the earlier contributors has this in his moniker. My suggestion is Spud; Spud the Spade.

Robin Charlton

Given that one of the three proposed names is female, then I would have gone for a bit of alliteration: Jade the spade. "This looks like a job for Jade" works fine for me.

Caroline Borduin

I picked Ace, because I feared the others somehow undersold the spade. But I see the crowd is going elsewhere and that's cool!

Philip Stack

I’m sorry, but since you won’t give us ‘Diggy McDigface’ as an option, I’m casting what the French call ‘un vote blanc’.

Bob Kingsmill

I'm just thankful there isn't an option like that.

Cheryl Kurucz

“Not Phil”! Let’s keep the competition get! Even though Phil isn’t there😁🥰😘 Love you Phil and Matt!

Ian Robertson

I was going to say Phil as well!

Alistair Watson

I was too slow off the mark to make the list so I will use it for my own spade: Digory

Eve-lyn Kennedy

Doug…..cos once he’s been it’s Doug.

Robert O'Bryan

It has to be Rusty although as an Aussie I would have thought Digger( refers to an Australian soldier, reliable, trustworthy and has your back ) and of course that's what the bloody thing does !!!

Caryll Reid

Pappy - to relate to his Grandfather

Nancy Sabo

I thought Sam Spade would be on there for sure
