Mark Freestone

Sorry…I think Doug is more appropriate

Floris Fokkinga

Disappointed not to have Tony as one of the options. 😉

Paul

Trusty Rusty

Mark Horn

Where’s Phil? 😳

Jack D Stout

Gertrude is the better of the three. Maybe they have some deeper meaning, but not excited by any of them. Mark Freestone's suggestion is much better. Ah well...

Mike Rinn

I’d prefer Goal Digger

bil Jeschke

Since Lemmy is not an option, have to go with Ace.

Mak Wilson

Personally I would have chosen Doug, but since that’s not an option I have to go with Gertrude.

Jon Colcord

Call it what is it… RUSTY

Paul Brekke

Ace of space, definitely! :)

Derek Thom

Rusty is more appropriate but I would have like to call it STAN after my late great Uncle who was always interested in local history.

Tim Szczesuil

How about "Digger", or "Spady McSpadeface"?

Jeff and Alexandra

Isn't it high time to torture Matt again.... er, I mean have him re-enact something? ;-)

Richard Jones

My personal choices would've been Sam or The Matternator

Martha Berryman

To HONOR Matt's Grandfather: (a good sharp shovel from Grandfather.)

Katrina Trigari

Ace was a close second for me but Gertrude just sounds suitably agricultural.

John Kocan

Ace in the hole. What could be more digger-y?

Robert Wise

A good tool deserves respect. As this is an important choice, respect is even more essential. … "Ace" is frivolous … "Rusty" is only partial … so that leaves "Gertrude", which carries the additional meanings of "spear" and "strength". So my vote was for "Gertrude"

Claus Skytte

My choice would have been Mr. Harding.

Michael leask

Mats shovel might be called “ald blunty”.

Karen Kastner

I like “Gert” as a short form for Gertrudes

Toni Hunter

I like the idea of ‘Trusty Rusty’, or even ‘Trusty Rusty the Ace of Spades’ when it’s uncovered something particularly special.

Toni Hunter

I know technically that’s using two of the names, I hope Gertrude doesn’t feel left out.

Simone Fritzen

Gertrude or bust! My great-grand aunt's name was Gertrude. She had a farm and her very trustworthy spade. Never worked without it. So in memory of her, I vote for Gertrude.

Eggs Ackley

All good choices but had to go with Rusty since I’m old (hence a bit rusty myself). “Rustcaliber” might have added a bit of historical flavor🗡🗡🗡

Steve Mikre

Gertrude just feels right to me...

Amanda Kerr-Munslow

This is a great job for Gerty. Gerty'll get to the bottom of this! Gert'll shift this dirt. I think Gertrude is the most flexible of the options. Rusty makes a spade sound neglected, and allowed to rust!

Goijaart van Dijk

As funny as 'Ace' (of spades) is, I have voted for 'Rusty'. Only because it can be paired with 'Phil'. ;-)

Melinda Nagy

Rusty sounds too modern, I like Gertrude

Doug Mackey

“Phil” is the obvious answer. But I’ll go for “Rusty” in honor of something Phil might have called it in their continued Saxon one-ups man ship.

Terry Gichrst

Gertrude...a chap has to have an effectionate female 'Land Army' name for his trusty partner after all 😉

Neil Scott

Oh man, it has to be the Ace of spades...

Robyn Williams

Gertrude for me as well. Seems a solid, reliable name - just what you want in a spade - maybe with a bit of a sharp edge!

Jeffrey R. Bailey

I am fan of the Maltese Falcon - Sam came to mind like the detective

Mark Howell

Rusty? What an insult to a well-cared-for tool!

Mark Howell

Matt should veto the other choices and name his spade Digby. This isn't the first time democracy has failed us.

the polish dude

I had an old dog Rusty ,always a faithful friend. A good companion needs a good name,

Donald Jesson

Hey Mick got a whole RV named for him at least give Phil a spade named for him lol

David king

Should be mister T (handle)

Adrian Barham

Phil would never have allowed his spade to be rusty. You look after your tools, and you clean them after a good day’s digging. Then go for a pint …

Don Cook

Rusty...it's grandfather's spade after all!

Donna Oglesby

PHIL!! AFTER THE GREAT DR. PHIL HARDING:-)

Laura Randolph

Gotta be rusty...it's been years since he lost the shovel insult competition w/ Phil...his spademay be rusty now. It been a long time

Joy Clayton

I chose Gertrude because it means spear maiden. Very appropriate!

Ian Robertson

Can't vote unfortunately, no option for Phil!

Dave Couchman-Boor

I favoured Trusty Rusty, wasn’t sure about Dirty Gertie

Dave Couchman-Boor

Surely Phil should be a mattock, a more flexible tool that is the Swiss army knife of diggers

Paul Morris

Why is Spadey MacSpade not an option in the vote ;-)

Kim Benson

Nah! Dirty Gertie's a winner in my book 👍

Trish Murphy

Rusty. Rusty. Rusty 🤞✌️💚

Joan McCarter

I can't believe it's not going to be Sam.

Gary IoW

Given the choice, I'd have called it 'Doug'.

Gina Broze

I was hoping for a “Raksha Dave” option.

Mark Grisham

I remember in Season 16 when Phil and Matt were insulting each other for entertainment in an Anglo-Saxon hall and there was a question as to how dull Matt's shovel was from years of mis-use. How about Blunty as a name?

Stephen Lambert

Wouldn't "Sam" have been appropriate given all the investigations that go on?

Laura Soto-Barra

Please don’t give it a woman’s name. Thanks.

Greg Haley

"Spady McSpadeface" must have already been taken...

Donna Oglesby

I like the name Gertrude, but I would of said Gertie:-). I named my 2003 caddie, Bessy..

helena macrae

as i remember all my dad's tools.. i taught my boys that was 'grampa's' .. blah blah.. so that would be the name i would call it.. ** grampas shovel** teehee helena..

Carrie Hartley

Gutted that Doug didn't get a look in Matt!!😂
