What's the difference between Medieval and the Middle Ages? What was so dark about the Dark Ages? And was the Great Famine really that great? Dr Eleanor Janega answers these questions and much more, in her concise yet comprehensive guide to the Middle Ages that packs a punch.

'The Middle Ages: A Graphic Guide' is a razor-sharp introduction to a fascinating period, proving that history need not be stuffy, ably illustrated by Time Team's own graphic artist, Neil Emmanuel, with nods to both Medieval woodcuts and Monty Python.

Earlier this year, Dani Wootton caught up with Eleanor and Neil for a wide-ranging discussion covering everything from the Great Schism to Medieval pandemics (which might be unsettling for those who have been affected by Coronavirus). Neil also shared his memories of our resident artist, Victor Ambrus.

Printing enters in the 1400s. That's a major shift toward "modern". Have to throw in praise for Magno's "Bound in Venice" for excellent document research on its economic impact. Great read. And Aldus as a savvy businessman.

Kieran Gane

It looks a fabulous book. And a nice salute to Victor!

Time Team is maturing! This segment and the prior segment "Searching for

Saxons" are great ancillary material to the actual digs. These segments show how educational Time Team can be for wider audiences. Understanding digs must include the historical background. Way to go folks and keep it up!

Loved it! Maybe a little too late to pick up for my medievalist daughter-in-law at Princeton in time for the holidays, but I suspect we will have to get a copy soon! It’s funny that Neil spent a good amount of time talking about illustrating in profile and 3/4 profile, and neither of the gals made a comment about how he was presenting himself on screen in the interview! Funny stuff.

Apologies folks - due to popular demand the book has now sold out but we will be restocking as fast as possible! Thanks for all those that are interested!

Dani is such a great interviewer. She is one of the reasons we bumped up our patreon tier. She seems to simply absorb the flow from the people, like a sponge. It looks effortless but you can tell she is so well prepared and has such great questions that setup those being interviewed to shine. This was a great interview but Dani repeats her performance over and over again with such effortless sparkle that although she fly's she seldom draws attention to herself. We hope she will around Time Team for a long time.

Dr J is awesome! I love her videos on HistoryHit TV.

This was the best! I like the longer format videos, really getting into details of history.
