Coming soon: Dani Wootton takes us back to Boden Fogou in Cornwall to discuss five fascinating finds that have been discovered at the site over the years.

While we're busy putting together the finishing touches, we're delighted to share an exclusive Patreon preview of one of the featured finds.

Prepare to enter the Iron Age... though not the one you might be thinking of.

This iron 'slug' was found during our own investigation of the site last September. Access the 3D model on Sketchfab here:

https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/box-iron-slug-19th20th-century-0c967593d5824250bb1837edd14e59d3

When we first shared the model on Patreon, some fans suggested it might be the head of a Roman tool – perhaps a chisel or hammer, with the hole indicating where the wooden handle originally slotted in.

However, in this video, Dani explains one intriguing but simple way in which we can be reasonably certain that this find comes from a much more recent era.

Keep a look out for the full selection of finds, coming soon.

That was fantastic breakdown of this special find...

On the underside of the iron slug, there appears to be a witness mark of a washer around the hole. This would suggest, to me, that it was rivetted to something. Are we sure that it’s not part of an agricultural implement or machine?

Michelle Kuennen

Thanks! That was very informative and cool. I had no idea. The ones where I live were different!

gary hipkiss

love it, i can remember my gran using an old iron like that on her range, my mom told me she had a smaller one as a child she was given to practice with

Don Cook

Very concise explanation of ... just about everything about the find! Excellent!

Robert Wise

Excellent presentation Dani! Wow! This one is a step up! The way you speak to the camera, and so closely, makes your presentation far more personal, and interesting. Very good work!

Peter David Brown

I remember my grannie using a box iron but used 2 slugs - one was being heated on the black stove while the other was in the iron. She also had a gas iron which had a rubber hose connection at the side of the stove at floor level. as she didn't like is so mainly used the box iron. Ancient history - not quite, early-mid1950's Aberdeen!

Andy Woodhead

Great video and I love to get a real close-up view of the finds in this way. I am a 3d artist and decided to make a model of a box iron after seeing this video. I publish all of my models on Sketchfab and they are free for anyone to view and download. You can find this model on Sketchfab by searching for ‘Box iron and slug’ (by Andy Woodhead) or use this link - (not sure if links work here) https://skfb.ly/owowG

Hi Andrew, wow your 3D modelling is amazing! Thanks for sharing this with us and we're glad to have inspired you with the box iron.

Great little preview thanks!

I love Dani's presentations. My Grandma Ruby and her Mom, my Great-Grandma Cora always had a flat iron on the wood stove shelf at the ready to put on the stove top to heat. Ironing with Grandma was hard work. Flat irons were used for door stops too.

Patricia Amero

Very cool! I was given a very pretty brass box iron that sits in a tray on my countertop. Neat to see what really should be inside to heat it up. thanks, xx

Dani is a great storyteller! She also reminded me of my grandmother in Chile using a flat iron with coals!
