We are just a tad excited to let you know that Time Team Digital has partnered with Shadow Tor Studios to create Time Team Games, with support from the UK Games Fund.

This fantastic new venture is now in the early stages of development, following the awarding of a grant from the UK Games Fund.

Time Team's creator and Series Producer, Tim Taylor, says: “Time Team is incredibly excited about partnering with Shadow Tor to create a game that brings the skills and strategies of archaeology to life, in an environment that has the excitement of a Time Team dig, combined with the thrill of solving games and puzzles.”

“We have seen Time Team develop through so many phases: the three-day programmes, Dig Watch direct from the field, longer-form documentaries, and Dig Village community archaeology. To see archaeology now being expressed through computer games and retaining the same distinctive Time Team appeal is great news.”

Shadow Tor creates games and interactive environments, crafting a unique blend of gameplay, history and archaeology. Matt 'Bear' Clark of Shadow Tor, who recently joined Time Team, says: "Shadow Tor Studios are in a unique position, as a game studio, we are already working alongside Time Team archaeology investigations, being on site and part of the digs, capturing 3D finds and crafting historical recreations of the past for the TV show. Extending this work into creating Time Team Games will be an exciting step forward. We have the amazing opportunity to expand as we make Time Team Games, based on the popular archaeology TV series.”

Tim continues: “For a long time we’ve looked to convert the excitement we all feel on a Time Team dig into a computer game that matters. It’s not about finding treasure or shiny stuff, it’s about understanding, learning, developing skills and attitudes that will enable the player to understand what really matters in archaeology through the Time Team format, which has been so successful worldwide.”

Matt says: “As part of this project development, we aim to grow and further partnerships, such as on-going work with University of Plymouth, and we look forward to hearing from many more.”

More details of Time Team Games will be announced as the project develops, and we'll continue to keep you updated on progress right here on Patreon, so please watch this space!

"The past, we believe, still has lessons to teach us..."

Join the archaeology adventure in Time Team Games. Time travel from your own home as you discover and resurrect the past. Investigate alongside TV’s Time Team experts, uncovering archaeological mysteries and piecing together clues. Play each role in a Time Team dig; place trenches, identify finds, study bones, reassemble pottery, rediscover long forgotten artefacts and much more, as you uncover clues to solve the site’s mystery.

Time Team Games allows you to join a dig through an interactive and guided investigation archaeology experience. You uncover the clues of the past through progressive puzzles and dig site activities, building towards a ‘whodunit’ climax.

"The future is the past..."

Time Team Games are founded in, and built upon, real Time Team archaeology digs, featuring genuine discoveries and digitally recreated artefacts, genuine sites and an interactive Time Team crew.

Delve deeper into history with the Discovery Mode, as Time Team experts are always on hand to answer questions, keeping you informed, investigating and learning more about what you have uncovered.

The more discoveries you make, the more questions need answers. Who occupied a site, what events occurred there and what happened to the people of the past.

Be guided by archaeology in your own progressive discoveries. As the information comes together, step in and out of a  resurrected  in-game ‘virtual past’ – a historic recreation of the site.

About the UK Games Fund award

“We are thrilled to have been awarded by the UK Games Fund. With the recognition and support, we can develop upon a unique and distinctly UK-based brand on Time Team and take new games to a worldwide audience. The partnership will allow us to expand, and take on new UK-based employees. We aim to set up a game from which we can build a franchise, adding further dig locations, VR editions and digital interactive content exploring wider archaeology sites around the globe.”

It's an interesting endeavour. I think the real challenge will be to reach out to the broader audience, perhaps even beyond those who already know about Time Team (if that is the ambition). There will inevitably be hard decisions with regards to playability (gameplay) versus faithfulness. Based on the teaser, it looks quite elaborate. Though I gather even a much less complex casual mobile game narrated by Sir Tony, with all the familiar characters and sites represented could draw quite a crowd! Anyway I applaud pursuing unbeaten paths, best of luck to Shadow Tor.

Holy moly. This might be the thing that actually gets me into video games 🎮. I think it could appeal to all those who like the ‘seek & find’ apps on iOS for sure.

That's exciting! I can't wait to see it!!!

Love Virtual Gus! I look forward to games that don't involve guns, explosions or other violence. If they're anything like the Myst series, I'm 100% behind this!

Elaine P

Oh, how cool, can't wait!

Claire J Portmann

Might we be seeing Mick, Victor, Robin, etc. back via the game?

Ann Wagner

So exciting! How does it feel to be virtual, Gus? I really look forward to that!

Shona Twining

I might finally find a video game that I like 👍

Jon Colcord

Oh please please add all of the originals into this as well! I like the idea, but the description does sound a bit dry. It would be great to add in features such as Phil chasing Tony out of his trench, perhaps trenches full of chickens, and some wild pub scenes as well! How about the Land Rover backing over John’s geo phys. gear? That was a fun gag. Play on some of the more humorous stuff. How about when Robin tried to blow up Tony with a bomb?!? Could be fun!

Patricia Amero

Fabulous! Well done, Bear... this is such a cool idea 🙌

Kathleen Garza

I can't wait to get this game for my son!

Donna Oglesby

Interested to see how this develops, would be great to see a virtual Mick??

Poppy Marks

This is awesome! Can’t wait to see more 😁

Has Time Team every thought to have a SIM in Second Life, or even go as far as the British Museum once did (Heritage Key) and have their own virtual world platform. Heritage key covered Stonehenge through the ages, Egypt and the Valley of the Kings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_Key , and https://creativech-toolkit.salzburgresearch.at/case_study/heritage-key-an-ancient-history-virtual-community-environment/ - it was such interactive fun. I remember taking my niece through the Quests pointing out to friends who worked the platform that the Stonehenge site in the 3 periods represented wouldn't have has tomatoes or potatoes during those periods. The Valley of the Kings quest was super fun, as was Stonehenge. There are SIMs or Parcels in Second Life devoted to history and archaeology still I believe.

Matt Bear Clark

We aim to be representing every element of a Time Team production and Archaeological dig - which includes adding in Pub trips too.

By the way if anyone is looking to try an AAA historically accurate game, I can wholeheartedly recommend Kingdom Come: Deliverance. It's still a story driven RPG, however the devs really listened and tried hard to make it accurate. For example after playing the beta people reported to them that there were no orange carrots in 15th century Europe and they changed the color for the final version of the game. I even got into the credits for bothering them about some details. :D

NZCharlie

I'm so excited!!!!!!

Pauline R

This could be the most excited I've ever been about a video game concept. @TimeTeam and @Bear - Shadow Tor Studios, if you want any US fan beta testers, please let me know how to apply.

Michael Plummer

This is a video game I might just really enjoy, can’t wait

Polly Robinson

Hey, for the game, cane one of the things we choose to wear be Phil’s hat? Or Mick’s jumper?

Pauline R

Any updates on this?
