That was an "important" episode. Lots of first glimpses into the character development. Best shot was with the Doctor and Janeway. Lt. Baxter returns later in 3 more episodes. Personal I think, the feeling of "over sexualization" in certain scenes and situation, comes from the fact that society is totally over sexualization.

Becca English

FYI- Robbie, the word for a guy who sews is "sewist", according to a bunch of my crafting groups. It's even unisex, so it can be used by anyone, not just guys!

Amit J

I agree that the whole crew were the losers here and that was an important concept to deliver for an early episode. You feel the crew's desperation, hope, and subsequent devastation from Tuvok's one-two punch. One of my favorite episodes from the whole series. Also I just went thru all the comments and disagree with the criticism of the nightgown scene. It showed no cleavage and went down to her calves; looks like something I might see my mother wearing when I was growing up. To me, it gave Janeway a very matriarchal look which was important to her appeal to the Romulan regarding missing your loved ones, while also being a vulnerable look to display her psychological desperation in getting her crew home. The latter is especially apparent when she says "good night" at the end of their convo. To me it worked perfectly and I didn't read any of it in a sexual manner, nor do I think it was intended.

A couple of things: Baxter does show up again but no spoilers to when. Lol The Starfleet/Maquis thing with Harry and B'Elanna is actually a reoccurring thing and one of my favorite parts of their friendship. I love how their friendship actually brought Tom and B'Elanna closer so Harry is to thank for them getting married. :)

Matt

As usual excellent and hilarious insights guys

Moonglade

Thanks Garrett and Robbie! One of my all-time favourite Voyager episodes. Maybe having Tom be the one to introduce Kes to that drink was as a part of the build-up of the Neelix v Paris jealousy thread that comes to a head in "Parturition"? It gives credence to it by hinting that Kes and Paris are spending time together. I've read that the writers often had to be clever about getting continuity past Rick Berman and The Suits.

Louis

Great vid guys. Also, always fun to hear all the behind the scenes stuff with each episode.

Matt

Who knew! Tom Paris has a hidden talent as a Seamster!

Matt

Would love to see a few more snippets each week of Garret and Robbie rewatching the episodes, those are priceless..LOL

Katie Grist

I was totally shipping B’Elanna and Harry back in the day, it definitely felt like they were being queued up for a romance in the beginning!

Dana Greenblatt

pretty sure a male seamstress is a tailor

Matt

Well done guys, and thank you to all producers and behind the scenes staff. You all are putting out great content. This has become my go to entertainment to start out my Monday work.

N+D

Robbie is right about the benefits of going for a walk to clear your head and organise your thoughts. I do it regularly when struggling to understand some data. Recommended.

I always thought that Janeway bedroom scene was creepy and unnecessary. Because DS9 was 70% serialized, I read that TPTB were adamant that this was going to be an episodic series. Too bad because Voyager lends itself to getting home for a serialized format.

Chloe E

Oh man, lost it at a "snake through a tube". I probably should not try to use that phrase when I talk to my patients on the labor and delivery floor. Great episode, guys! I always loved Harry's and B'Elanna's dynamic in the early seasons...wish it would have been played up a little more throughout, although, I never did invest in it turning romantic. I was just hoping for a strong female/male friendship!

Kyle Eshom

Has there been any solution to why these videos won't play? It's continually freezing even if I lower the quality all the way down in settings. Do I need to be in a different browser? Chrome maybe? Thanks! The unlocked audio has been great but I'd love the video too

Eddie Ordaz

I can't believe Garrett didn't know what the humming noise was. lol That is a big part of the show. Interesting cause I always loved that sound.

Eddie Ordaz

Yea! That crew is a heck of a good looking crew! I agree!

Rich Gross

I think this was a great episode. I’m really glad they didn’t go too in-depth in the series in general with the theme of whether the hologram was alive or not. It was touched on a few times, but really, we went through all that with Data in TNG and didn’t need to spend much more time on that path. As for the scene in Janeway’s bedroom, I’m just glad it ended up with her telling the Romulan to contact her when they had the video set up. I was worried they were going to turn it on right then and there with her in her bedroom and nightgown!

Stephanie Baker

I really enjoyed this discussion of Eye of the Needle. I liked the theme discussions and the science achievements. I agree about the Janeway negligee scene. I don't think TeleKromor was trying to be creepy, but it seemed very unprofessional to portray Janeway looking 'sexy' while talking with a Romulan in the Alpha quadrant. I also liked the discussion about Kes advocating for the Doctor. I wanted to add that Tuvok is a wet blanket throughout this entire episode, but he redeems himself in the future. You guys answered a lot of questions that I had. I like that you are discussing big picture things, but also the details. Thank you for your time and effort.

Mohamed Noor

This was great! And totally agreed with everyone re: weird bedroom scene. Though one science thing caught me there (and in other scenes)-- Telek Romor says "Good night." What does "night" mean to people on a spaceship, much less between spaceships? On the International Space Station over Earth (in real life), I think people work different 24-hour cycles. Food for thought. But GREAT Delta Flyers episode, Garrett & Robbie!

Caroline Aching

Finally acknowledged the crazy bedroom scene!! 100% agree with everyone here it was so bizzare. And now we have a new catch line "A snake in the tube" haha! I lost it laughing there. Loved also the segment on the doctor's rights as an individual. One major and significant moment in the episode for sure. Can't wait for more, you guys are doing amazing!

Oxey

Loved this episode!

You’ve really hit the nail on the head here Garrett and Robert you’ve hit something that goes to the core of me. When Kess approach’s the captain Janeway to talk about the sentience of the emergency medical hologram it highlights something that not since “Dear Data” do we encounter holographic characters that have been created that have in essence a soul. We later on this in the series in “Fair Haven” s06e11 & “Spirit Folk” s06e17. It appears that holographic characters that are running for a longer time than they should do in some ways gain sentience. With all that you can give a hologram it is clear that in “Renaissance Man” s07e24 that holographic team members with a mobile emitter are actually a greater attribute to a bridge crews team than androids like Data. Controversial point of view I know, but my favourite character of all Star Trek is “The Doctor aka Joe”.

Kris Hansen

How do both of you manage to look so young still? Honestly, I'd peg both of you in your late 30s, early 40s. Star Trek keeps you young, I guess!

Breana Harris

Re: the Metric system thing, you know what gets me? I think it was in Parallax when Kes told the Doctor he was eight centimeters shorter, how does she know how much eight centimeters is?? She's Ocampan and it was her first week on the ship. Americans don't even know. I really like that first fan review cause it's interesting that Voyager does have this collective goal to get home but there isn't any strategy or specific plan they can make to shorten those 70 years, they really do have to just fly along and hope they get lucky. It kind of informs the whole spirit of the show. You guys are the best, thank you to everyone!

Andrea Clarke

I just wanted to point out that in the UK, we are much like Canada, we use both metric and imperial measurements for things. Often recipes for example have both grams and ounces. I think Canada might be the same as the UK because it is a British Colony. (Just a guess)

Christopher Collins

Vaughn Armstrong I think portrayed more aliens and characters on Voyager than he ever did on any of the other Star Trek series. He first appeared as a Klingon in a first season of Star Trek The Next Generation. Then he appeared briefly in like two or three episodes of Deep Space Nine. He played two different Cardassians in Deep Space Nine. One in the first season and a different one in the last season of Deep Space Nine. Both were brief & not very memorable Cardassians in DS9. Then he portrayed so many species on Voyager but ironically he got his most prominent reoccurring role on Star Trek Enterprise as a human Admiral Forrest.

Christopher Collins

I thought it was odd two on how anyone can tell by just looking at someone that they are 8 centimeters shorter than the last time they saw them without measuring. That is to small to recognize without looking. And to specifically say 8 rather than any number without looking is odd to me.

Sebastian Quinn

Eye of the Needle is one of my go-to episodes for Season 1. Every time I watch it I just want the crew to get home, although with it only being Season 1, there’s no chance. Really loved the progress for the Doctor, and it paves the way for all of his hobbies later on in the show. I’m wondering...did we even see Nelix in this episode?! Loving your channel guys. Heard about this on the reunion call, and now re-watching the episodes along with you. A fresh experience :)

Jennifer7895

I had such hair envy for Kate's do throughout the whole show. Little saddened when I discovered it was a wig the whole time.

Utopia Science Fiction

That was great advice on backstory, thank you for sharing that! This was the first episode I remember really loving when I first watched Voyager, it had some great moments, especially with the Doctor.

Laura

Baxter had one of the best scenes in the whole series in Twisted. I can't wait until that one get's reviewed!

Elizabeth Gall

Really enjoying the discussion at the end about imagining multiple possibilities of reacting to events and the therapeutic possibilities of this! I just finished reading "The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, Body, and the Healing of Trauma" by Bessel van der Kolk, and the last few chapters he talks about intentionally using acting therapeutically as a way to talk about emotion through characters and even re-write and re-envision one's own traumas.

Krys

Great podcast and just what we need these days! I am a scientist and we use metric and Celsius even in the US. ;-) I'm glad it was used in Voyager. Thanks for all you are doing with this podcast- fun stuff!!

Renatuh

The video is somehow unavailable? It says "Unable to find video. Such are the mysteries of the internet."

TheDeltaFlyers

Hi, that is odd. It seems to play fine for me. But, I'm using a browser on a laptop. Are you by chance trying to watch through the Patreon app on a handheld device? There tends to be a lot more issues with the app. And many tech bugs can be fixed by deleting the app and using a browser instead. Let us know if that helps or if the problem persists.

Renatuh

I am using the app on my tablet. Yesterday I watched episodes 4 through 6 (I'm like a year behind 😅) and it went fine. Now my tablet had an update it does that. Also in the browser it says webpage not found 🤷🏼‍♀️ Is it a location thing maybe? I'm from the Netherlands. Also I can watch the newest episode, so this really confuses me

TheDeltaFlyers

I would say to try again in about an hour. I will try to reupload the episode and see if that fixes the problem.

Monica McLaughlin

As an American of German decent I am offended by Robbie’s impersonating of a German person. j/k

Dead_Alewives

They mention the hum of the engine in the background and I think that's one of the things about classic Star Trek that makes it so engrossing. That hum is extremely relaxing.

Ja Dav

On the Doctor being left behind - more likely he'd be terminated, because if the Voyager crew were able to beam through the wormhole, they'd have to set the self-destruct on Voyager...they could hardly just leave that ship and its technology there. As for Baxter, wasn't there an unseen Baxter in The 37s that Chakotay said "it would be a shame to lose" if he chose to stay on Planet Earhart?

Eric Leitman

For continuity purposes in the "Lineage" episode (season 7), B'Elanna says her father left when she was 12

Eric Leitman

With the advantage of the 21st century in being able to binge watch season its easy to pick these things out.

Christina

This is one of my favorite episodes. Love the Kim-Torres dynamic. Sets the tone for their many future science-y scenes. I also enjoy Tom Virtue giving the Doc the silent treatment, like he’s not even there. Lol You guys are so funny to watch. Even though I’m a new Patron, I’m loving watching these episodes.
