The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is State of Flux. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. Martha Hackett joins them for a short interview about the episode!

State of Flux:
While on a routine exploration of a new planet, Voyager responds to the distress calls of a Kazon warship. Upon investigation, they find the Kazon ship hobbled by an accident caused by Federation technology - a clear signal that Voyager may be carrying a traitor.

I really like how you guys specifically try to key in on directors. From the outside the notion that each episode gets directed by someone else/ someone new I would have assumed it got blasé, like the director of the week synonymous with the planet of the week ubiquity. However you guys prove that's clearly not the case. Anywho, Robert Scheerer also did 'Rise' in S3, but I'm sure you've already gotten to that. (also 11 episodes of TNG, and 1 DS9)

Garrett, I think you are thinking of the Philadelphia Experiment and also several movies were made using this conspiracy story line. If you look it up on Wikipedia and IMDB.com you will find numerous references about it.

AJ Provance

Garrett, you're thinking of the Philadelphia experiment.

Matt

Excellent as usual guys. Loving the insight Robbie brings as director and producer when talking about how he go about filming something different and so on.

Jason Self

Another potential loser for your consideration: The entire Voygaer crew, as now Neelix has his hands on those seemingly gross leola roots.

Katie Puterbaugh

Another great episode! Its especially interesting hearing both of your impressions of the episodes where you guys don't have much of a presence.

Megan Hurwitt

Robbie, this is going to sound weird, but I have a massive in-home library of books combined with my husband's and I've been looking for a set of clean, modern bookcases like yours that can accommodate our nearly 4k collection of books of all shapes and sizes. We want one with various heights because we have tall coffee table books and also smaller ones. Where did you get your bookcase and did it break the bank? Right now I've been living with my books stacked 3 layers deep in an ikea bookshelf and I'm always incised when I can't find the book I want because it's buried somewhere. We've been in this house for 5 years; it's time to let out books breathe.

Stephanie Baker

Thank you for discussing this episode. I enjoyed the details and Martha Hackett’s guest appearance. This episode is important for Seska’s ‘arc’, but it’s not one of my favs. I especially enjoyed the discussion about hallways and turbolifts. Thank you again. This is always a highlight of my week!

Samuel Beardsley

They say time is the fire in which we burn... :P

Chris

was an X Files episode about the US Airforce i think using Alien technology, and it caused people to be fused into things, and to swap bodies. or some weird stuff like that. Perhaps that is what your thinking about in this. Although that episode could have also been influenced by a conspiracy theory.

When they were talking about how long it took engineers to repair things, and their interactions with the Captain, I actually remembered that the reason Scotty seemed so easy going was because he actually doubled his repair estimate times. That way he'd look like a 'miracle worker' when it was done sooner. And at the very least he got the time he really wanted when the captain would cut it in half. On a side question... I just made the active realization that there are THREE Roberts on the cast... Did that cause a lot of verbal confusion?

Matt

We definitely need a “I don’t remember” T-shirt and hat in the store 🖖😅

Matt

Roadhouse, one of the my all time favorite movies as well. I never knew Culluh and Ketchum were one in the same!

Justin Rhoads

I just had an idea... What if you guys went over the episode trailers as well? It might be kind of fun considering how skewed trailers often could be. And that's what we all had to sit around with for a week before seeing each episode. They were always so dramatically amusing.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

Oh...I always wondered If Martha Hackett knew when she got the part if she was playing a spy that was Cardassian. I wish she had stuck around longer. Thanks Guys. <3

Christian Könemann

for some reason out of all the semi-regulars in Star Trek, Martha Hackett's Seska is one of the very few that I always remember. I'm rewatching as the podcast goes and I couldn't really remember many of the crew regulars we've seen so far. Even poor Lt. Casey! But with Seska I immediately remembered her story and Martha's name. So she obviously made quite the impact on me :)

Sony

I know this is probably sacrilegious to say but I think the losers of this episode are Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay. Janeway responds to a Kazon "distress call" that was clearly a ruse given their past incidents, then she gets betrayed and pwned by Seska. Now the Kazon have a super-smart Federation/ Marquis/ Cardassian engineer who knows Voyager's codes, Federation secrets and vulnerabilities. Chakotay's betrayed again (first with Tuvok being a secret agent), then by his ex-girlfriend. Even after he 'had her back' during the accusations she turns out to be a Cardassian spy who served on his Marquis ship. Can you imagine the shame? At least Tuvok shared in the "misery" since the "wool was pulled over his eyes" too. But on a positive note, Seska's true identity was revealed. Who knows what would've happened if she stayed on board longer without anyone knowing. So the other winners (besides Seska - LOVE her character) are The Doctor and Kes.

Sony

I googled that in the middle of watching this. "According to some accounts, unspecified "researchers" thought that some version of this field (unified field theory), would enable using large electrical generators to bend light around an object via refraction, so that the object became completely invisible. The Navy regarded this of military value and it sponsored the experiment." ~ wikipedia Perhaps this was the inspiration for the Klingon/ Romulan cloaking device.

Charity Ponton

This episode really made me fall in love with Martha Hackett's portrayal of Seska. Her last dialogue before she transports off of the ship, awesome! She was the character you loved to hate. Also, another thing I enjoyed in regards to Star Trek was the different directors for different episodes. It made each one feel individual and unique. I never really knew how to characterize this episode in particular until you guys talked about it and now I understand better what I am seeing artistic wise from episode to episode. I do miss episodic television, I must admit.

Laura Johnson

Okay...so this podcast and episode got me thinking.....I agree that there could have been more build up with the Chakotay/Seska relationship. But, then again (having watched the whole seven seasons a few times over) I think of how well some character/situation arcs are built. The Kazon/Voyager traitor storyline comes back in Season 2 along with the Chakotay/Seska relationship. Your comments about different directors, different story writers, and different script writers makes me wonder how much is known from the beginning of a season about these arcs by the writers and actors?

Luz R

Just commenting to say that Robbie was super funny. Rebecca also cracked me up lol. ❤

ryeiverr

Just wanted to say I love opinionated Robbie! It's really interesting to hear about these possible flaws that I wouldn't have thought of myself. And when Robbie said "Don't buy it!" it made me laugh so much. Come on we don't just want constant positivity right?

ArtRobot

Garrett, your pop filter could be slightly nudged to form a heart across the video with Robert's pop filter 🤣♥

Rich Gross

I’ve always felt that Seska was an underused character. Martha Hackett was incredible, and they did a great job creating an amazing character, and then just mainly used her for one arc. It would have been awesome if they could have used her character on the ship as still part of the crew (but growing frustrated with the lack of progress home, etc) for a couple seasons before having her split apart and joining with aliens.

Kathleen Scherrman

I wish the Chacotay / Seska relationship would have played out longer too. I think it would have made the betrayal better.

Breana Harris

You guys are extra hilarious this week. I was listening on the way to work and couldn't stop laughing. Can't wait for Faces when they finally decide Tom Paris is expendable. The Kazon really were pretty impressed with themselves for guys who couldn't figure out water. I don't really love that they made Seska Cardassian. Not only does it make no sense, it feels like more complication than the character needs, and like they thought they had to make her Cardassian in order to justify her doing anything villainous. But Martha Hackett is so awesome it doesn't even matter!

Moonglade

Seska was the one believable threat to Janeway and Voyager for me. Even the Borg couldn't win majorly, because, hey 7 seasons. Seska had the super smarts and the insights to beat Janeway and Chakotay at every turn and I would have liked to see her run rings around them several more times before getting her come-uppance. I'd go so far as to say Seska was Janeway's nemesis, over and above The Borg Queen. We all knew The Borg Queen could never be allowed to defeat Janeway, but Seska - Seska was different and it could have been really interesting to see two evenly matched female characters do that dance for a while longer. I thought this was a great episode and a great set-up for an even better Chakotay and Seska one - "Maneuvers". Garrett, I love your shirt! Gotta love that tattoo.

Bree Boehlke

Seska is one of my favorite evil characters in Trek. I wish they did the dance longer as well... though, when she makes a holodeck comeback, that is one of my favorites. Martha Hackett was quoted something like ‘She’s a character people love to hate, so I feel like I have done my job well.’

Rich Gross

Is there going to be an extended interview with Martha Hackett? I hope we get to hear more about her Voyager story.

Mike Fillmon

Seska was my favorite villain in the entire series followed by the Borg. BTW, my best photo-op EVER was with Martha Hackett! A classy lady in real life :-)

TheDeltaFlyers

Day one, we all agreed that the Robert’s would be referred to as Bob(Picardo), Robbie(McNeill) and Robert(Beltran). That’s how we kept it orderly:) ~~Garrett

Craig Drebit

Spasiba for all of these great podcasts and language lessons!

Ed Begens

Was great to see and hear from Martha Hackett again! She was amazing.

Ed Begens

Can't wait for "Heroes and Demons", Marjorie Monaghan from Babylon 5!! I think she also was in the movie, The Bonfire of the Vanities if memory recalls. But, Loved her in that episode!

Borgscan

The audio has definitely got better. Actually in the previous episodes Robbie's Blue yeti was wetup incorrectly. The end of the microphone was pointed towards him, but yeti is meant to spoken into from the side. It still worked okay, but it wasn't the idea setup.

Kris Hansen

What role did Robbie play in "Into the Woods"? I love that show!

Kris Hansen

Wait, am I the first person to comment on the discussion of how great Garrett's butt looked in Voyager? Damn, that was one of the reasons I was all swoony over Harry Kim. Back to the gym, Garrett!

Mark Shuler

Have not heard the whole podcast, and Garrett and Robbie were talking about Bronson Canyon. I remember hearing somewhere long ago and far far away...that Charles Bronson got his name when he was working on a film in Bronson Canyon. He was looking for a screen name and the director said what about Bronson?

Mark Shuler

I gotta read the whole comment feed before I mention the Philadelphia Experiment. So forgive me if there is repetition. This is the story and movie Garrett was referencing when he was talking about the WWII incident with bodies being fused into rock and bulkheads (In the Philadelphia Experiment it was bulkheads in the ship.)

Jennifer7895

It sounds so much better. Thank you Team Delta Force <3

Scott Friend

LOVED Martha's insights on Seska, great interview and episode! Hope to see more of her as Seska's storyline wraps up in this first season. Oh, and I totally agree with Robbie's WIN this week, but would add Garret's hat to that list!

LT Turner Jr

I am loving the guests coming on the podcast, especially to get their perspective on things. Love it. Would be awesome if you guys can do some "reenactments" from the episode. That would be so classic!!!!!

Cass

I agree about everyone's surprised regarding Seska being a bit unbelievable. She's demonstrated roguish behavior to multiple characters, so that always bothered me. As for away mission teams, I actually liked the teams changing up based on missions, because I don't think it would make sense for the main pilot or captain to go on every mission. That said, I do think they should have done a better job of balancing the main cast members as a whole throughout the series. For example, if a character only gets one line, then try to make it matter more; give an opinion or suggestion related to the situation, which can inform a character more than just reporting on technobabble, and try to minimize sequential episodes of a character being marginalized. For Tom specifically, maybe he was downplayed as the writers worked out a shifted direction for the character?

Megan Moore

I feel like the surprise was finding out she was a cardassian. That was a huge surprise. As for her being the spy, I feel like it's easy to say now that it was obvious but it wasn't. A little rogue behavior like taking mushrooms is not even close to the same thing as giving technology to the enemies.

David Manske

In the discussion about Torres telling the Captain how long the job would take I was reminded of Scotty's advice to LaForge in TNG: Relics, He said something like, "Never tell them how long it will actually take! How will they think of you as a Miracle Worker?"

ST Fan CB

I love how Garrett brings up Seska and Chakotay having hooked up because she brought him the soup. This reminds of 2004 when I was deployed to Iraq. I was sitting in the Tactical Ops Center late one evening and watched as the female and attractive Commander's Translator came in and bring the radio operator a hot plate of food. As the transaction took place, I said to my buddy "they are hooking up" although I used more explicit language at the time. He asked how I knew and I stated that no woman brings a man food like this unless they are in a relationship. Turns out I was correct and I bet that Garrett is totally correct here as well.

Eric Leitman

Robert Picardo said you have to have a good butt to be in Star Trek on Voyager’s “E” special back in 1995

Christina

I’ve always hated the Kazon. They were a bunch of dummies. They stole what technology they had. They seemed rather primitive. What I liked about this episode, though, is the big reveal that Seska is a Cardassian operative. We know she’s a troublemaker but now we know to what extent. She is a devious character, one of my fave villains. Just want to add I’m having a blast watching you guys, as I rewatch along with you! Thanks for all of your hard work!
