The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Alliances. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Alliances:
After continuous Kazon attacks against Voyager cost the lives of several crewmembers and the damage to the ship continues to mount, Janeway seeks an alliance to secure Voyager's passage through the Kazon Collective.

I just rewatched this episode of Voyager Alliances. It had been a while. I wish that this episode would have worked out better.

Continuing my rewatch: - I think the ‘battle volume’ was spot on - I like that Janeway trusts Tom so much. Her command ‘get us out of here!’ Totally relies on Paris to make things happen. She trusts his judgement to pick a good course. I love when you have working relationships where you don’t have to spell everything out.

Dee McGee

My dear friend and birthday buddy, Raphael!

I’m watching this on 5/11/24, the morning after the incredible aurora borealis was seen in NC last night! I loved Robbie’s back screen. Maybe he was able to see the lights in GA! I hope most all of you did. Real space stuff. I’m smiling.

Mark Scheuern

The segment where the Kazon leaders were entering reminded me of a NASCAR race where the drivers are introduced to the fans. It made me laugh. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good episode.

Jason Self

Pine cones and orange peels in the Kazon hair? So it's potpourri hair? :)

Dustin Snyder

"That's why you're a forever Ensign......." LOL!

Chris Knapp

I once heard that the costume designers or the props department used spray painted sponges and dogs' rawhide chews to make the Kazon hair pieces look different. Any truth to that?

Moonglade

Almost spat my coffee at Garrett's flirty Janeway "Dirty... Dirrrty". Janeway and Chakotay flirted their way through 7 seasons. 7 seasons! :D I thought Janeway accepting Tuvok's advice re: the hybrid orchid being stronger with both species grafted together was interesting - it was a total juxtaposition to her stance in "Tuvix" :)

When Robbie said he wished he could get Kate to talk about Threshold next week, it took me a moment to realise he was referring to Kate Mulgrew herself. Now I’m so excited about that possibility!!! (Actually, I have to pinch myself that this whole podcast is even real: Tom and Harry going through every episode of Voyager? Eeeeeeee!!! Thank you. I love it all.)

Christopher Collins

This is the first time I have seen Garrett’s wife filmed on camera. She is pretty. I have seen pictures on social media or overheard both of your wives but it was nice seeing Garrett’s wife on camera. I hope we see both Robbie & Garrett’s wife’s in future reviews.

Christopher Collins

I would not be surprised if their is truth in that because honestly the Kazon hair does look like sponges.

Christopher Collins

I liked Garrett’s poem for this episode. That poem sounded so good I could listen to that at any convention.

Matt

Maquis Way, the Starfleet Way, or the Jane Way! :)

Christopher Collins

I hope you bring in a writer from the main staff of Voyager and get their insight on why they would focus so much on particular aliens like the Kazon, The Borg, The Herogen, Vidiians. Or how did they decide to write for a particular character.

Matt

I am so stoked for next week's episode and get Robbie's take on Threshold!

Christopher Collins

I always wondered why if someone hits an explosion or gets beat up how come we would not see more blood, bruises, burns or scars in a fight in an episode when it would look more serious. The final question kind of answers that it was a compromise to avoid stopping by the hair and makeup department.

Jamason Isenburg

Garrett and Robbie you guys should sell some "The Delta Flyers" Beard Oil! woot woot! Scent could be themed. "Warped Particles!" :) I'd buy it!

Cody Caudill

This was a great podcast episode even though the episode itself is just okay. I really hope next week's episode is extra long. I want to hear the cast's perspective of this much-discussed and derided episode.

Lisa Minnesma

Totally agree!!!! Every episode!!! And I have no shame in admitting I've watched the whole series a dozen times and if quizzed I can probably say which season an episode is in!

Lisa Minnesma

I laughed out loud at the "39, no 33" happy birthday comment! So funny!

Lisa Minnesma

Just finished watching. I love these videos! Hilarious do-over comment about Tom and B'Elanna in this episode by Robbie! Just wait till season 3!

Megan Hurwitt

Robbie, no. The #1 rule of podcasts is NO EATING

David

Really great episode guys Thank you! Can't believe we are already to Threshold next week :)

Chris Flores

Your very own Nelix.... haaaaa I'm dead

Miki Tracey

I know. months late, but i figured after the Joel Grey Blitoris aliens that somebody would notice that the Trabe had Uterus foreheads. And nobody said a thing!!!! Trace those fallopian tubes.... :(

Cass

From a romance standpoint, I remember B'Elanna actually being one of the characters with the smallest number of romantic relationships on the show. Chakotay seemed like a crush that was never acted upon, and Harry seemed like a friend with teasing, slightly flirty banter. From what I recall, she didn't have a romantic holodeck program, she didn't hook up with aliens of the week, she didn't enter the show in a relationship, and she rejected several potential suitors quite strongly.

Mario censullo

One thing I don’t understand is that, okay seska didn’t want to be Under the command of Janeway. But if her goal was to reach the alpha quadrant the kazon were not the way to go. Also I’m surprised that no one else volunteered or “defected” to side with seska. I feel like atleast a few members would have been onboard with seska and start there own kind of “sect” I mean what was seskas endgame? To take voyager and go back to the alpha quadrant? Or to create her own empire in the delta quadrant, With the backwards society of the kazon? I’m just frustrated with the whole plot. Okay yes, seska doesn’t want to be apart of voyager, but does she hope to get back home with the kazon? Like I said I feel as though there would of been some other maquis members to join her cause. Any thoughts?

Aaron Pettit

Say what you will about the Kazon (no, really, keep going it's hilarious), but however awful the hairdo and unbelievable the species as a whole, Anthony De Longis is always giving 120% - the sneering and preening he does while 'negotiating' with Janeway is so great - you can see the character torn between practicality and the desire to show up the captain on her own ship.

Zalyn Schwartz

I really appreciate Robbie's perspectives on how alien dancers would have been so much cooler if they portrayed a different concept of beauty and sexiness! There is so much amazing potential in sci-fi to go beyond the assumption of "only human-looking ideal women are sexy" into some much more creative territory. Thank you for this and your other reflections throughout this podcast and series. <3

Christina

I wholeheartedly agree about the dancer. I hate when shows and movies throw in the gratuitous sex/violence when it lends nothing to the story. I dislike Kazon hair. Worst villains in Trek universe. With that said, it’s good to learn their back story and why they’re so ignorant about technology.

Chris Deel

I felt like B’Elanna was pronouncing her name and Chakotay’s with harder consonants to sort of keep her relationship and his with the Maquis and each other from being forgotten. Kind of like how a friend of family member might pronounce your Asian or other more differently sounding name correctly due to familiarity and a desire to respect the correct pronunciation and meaning. It made me feel like she just wasn’t willing to bend to a somewhat more relaxed pronunciation like everyone else. The way she says Chakotay sounds a lot more like a native name might be pronounced and the way she says B’Elanna sounds a lot more Klingon. Her saying those names to me sounds like my old Korean teachers talking to each other and calling each other by their names correctly while everyone else uses more relaxed Americanized pronunciations if their names. It never felt wrong or bad that everyone else pronounced the names more plainly but her pronunciation did sort of remind you that they knew each other a lot longer and had a different history.

Chris Deel

Also, when the Kazon leaders were entering they each had like a trumpet or drums….but also…increasingly loud clapping and cheering like they had an audience…but they didn’t…check the background. None of them are clapping or smiling. There’s no audience. None. Why add the clapping background?!
