i think the Maury character was supposed to be a representation of the "normal" people that a Q would encounter on regular basis

Dobe

Hey, Garrett! Q actually does use a puff of air in TNG on the Calamarain, a species he'd tortured over time (Deja Q, s3e13).

Jen V

I agree with Garrett about the tables looking like razor blades!

Dee McGee

Thank you for handling the subject matter with such care. Edited to add: Tim Russ couldn't be any less Vulcan-like in real life.

LauraFox

Janeway is saying Welsh *Rarebit* which is in fact not a rabbit but a version of cheese on toast.

Stephanie Baker

Thank you for a heartfelt episode. I like how Star Trek does not make declarations about moral decisions, but explores them.

William Brandt

I’ve never been a fan of this episode. It felt too much like “The Measure of a Man” from TNG season 2. The appearance of Riker was cool at the time but iirc he was returned to earth with no memory of the time spent on Voyager (cop out) and therefore felt redundant. I remember seeing the tease to this episode and thinking Janeway would inform him of their situation and ask to report it to starfeet. He could have at least caught up the crew on current events like the dominion war that was starting at the time. A little nitpick my Star Trek buddies and I had at the time was the fact Riker appeared in a Voyager uniform and not the new (First Contact) grey.

Matt

The snapping is just Q's thing...since he can blow a puff or apparently they can also just spin their hands and point their fingers up..LOL

Matt

It's very difficult to see how someone would choose "not to swim", because logically we default to what Robbie said. We want to live, to keep fighting. However, when you are battling extreme terminal illness or overwhelming emotions that cause so much emotional suffering, sometimes the only way out is to no longer "keep swimming". I see this so much in the field I work in. Thank you guys for this episode and sharing your insights into this topic.

Matt

Next time Chakotay comes on as a guest, you have to ask him what a comet tastes like!

Matt

A new t-shirt..."does it taste like a comet?"

Justin Rhoads

Poor Garrett not getting on site... if that was bad in this episode though I can’t wait to see the reaction to the tons of on site stuff going on in the two parter of season three when poor Kim is stuck on Voyager watching TV the whole plot line! 😒

Ian Glinka

Anybody watch The Critic back in the day? Q2 in this ep is played by Jay Sherman’s dad! Some fun trivia

Gabi Rutledge

Absolutely loved Quinn's monologue in the Continuum near the end!

Lou Costanzo

Hey guys ... I was wondering if you would consider doing a rating at the end of each video or review? Maybe rate the episode on a scale of 1 to 5 or 1 to 10 with 1 being the worst and 5 or 10 being the best.

Chris P

"Oh we've all done the scarecrow. Big deal!" One of my favorite lines.

Jason Wang

This was definitely one of the top episodes of Voyager. Especially I think for a show made in the 90's when assisted suicide at the time probably wasn't even an idea to consider yet. When I read about assisted suicide and how people would "force" their loved one to keep living while they are in extraordinary pain and suffering, I found that completely shocking and selfish. Yes, I understand they want to be able to keep talking and being with their loved one, but at the same time, they are doing that while under intense pain. I don't think I would be able to live with myself if I did that to someone. What do you remotely even talk about in such a situation?

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

Great recap. Again made me think more objectively on the issue. Do not want to dwell to much on my own experience, But I was married in 1998. My husband went into kidney failure in 1999. Had a massive coronary in 2000 during Dialysis. Every time during those 10 days in the ICU he would have another attack after dialysis. He was in and out of consciousness those 10 days not fully aware of where he was etc. Finally the doctors asked me what I wanted to do. (What I wanted was my husband back, but knew he would not be the same man) I told them no more treatments; they took him off life support and he was gone within 15 seconds. So I do believe in quality of life over quantity.

Lisa Minnesma

Another great conversation! Thanks guys!! I appreciated how carefully and respectfully this tough subject was discussed by you two. It's not easy. And I liked the surprise guest. Was not expecting Riker at all!

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

Uh... Did you know actor Maury Ginsberg actually played Maury Ginsberg? I wonder what the story of that is.

Stephanie G Williams

Loooove this idea. He's still trying to figure out what a warp particle looks like! 🤣 And that cute cartoon Chakotay at a dinner table eating a comet was too funny!

Lisa Minnesma

Also, Robbie, so sorry to hear about both your parents passing away because of cancer. Thank you for sharing that with us. My sincere condolences!

Stephanie G Williams

I love you guys. This was so well done, and I love how open you were on this very important topic. 💗💗💗

Jamason Isenburg

Amazing episode and great podcast! I really enjoy Robbie and Garrett's comments on directing. I am directing a school play next semester and due to COVID we will be attempting to "film" it and produce it in a tv/movie like fashion instead of a traditional theatrical play. Hearing your techniques on directing and camera shoots are going to be invaluable to me. lol! :) Thanks again! Such a bright way to start every week!

James G. Jones

Thats very cool, in my opinion that there was Three Garrett/Gerrit's in this episode. My middle name is Garrett and I grew up till 18 going by Garrett till joined military and went by last name, first name. So whenever I watched Voyager growing up I watch the opening credits to see Garrett Wang name and think so cool to see it on tv, Garrett was very uncommon name where I lived in Arkansas during the 1990's.

K

I know this could read sarcastic over the internet, but it’s very sincere— thank you for sharing that. <3

Karen

He's also stuck on the ship while everyone else gets to play World War II soldiers.

Heather Kim

Since Voyager debuted in January, wouldn't this episode have been somewhere near the FIRST Christmas that Voyager existed? (non-minutiae-obsessed fans want to know!)

Christopher Collins

Robert Duncan McNeil is in the Quantum Leap season 2 episode titled "Good Night, Dear Heart" I remember it surprised me when I saw Robert Duncan McNeil in the episode when I bought the DVD's to the show back when Quantum Leap started being released on DVD. I did not think the episode Robert Duncan McNeil appears in is all that remarkable. There is no action in the episode but it does stand out to me now just because Robert Duncan McNeil is in the episode. I think Good Night, Dear Heart was a low budget episode because the most money that went into that episode seemed to be put on fake blood. There are not too many sets in that episode and most of those sets look pretty general. Not too much would tell you that it was taken place in the 1950's besides the film camera, automobiles, and hair styles.

Christopher Collins

It was great hearing Robert Duncan McNeil's insights on guest staring on Quantum Leap.

Karen

Death Wish originally aired February 19, 1996. But given filming schedules, it was probable filmed before Christmas, if that counts!

Michelle Z

I loved the answers to my questions. Thank you guys!

Chris Flores

Garrett, you remember Johnathon Franks being on your show NOW? lol

Kelly Bee (CaptainKathryn)

LOL I always thought Chakotay's "tasting the comet" line was weird too, thank you for the validation. :D

Rich Gross

The "tasting the comet" line wasn't that weird to me. But that's because I've heard that idiom several times in the past in reference to many other things. "Looks, feels, and tastes just like a ____" is a thing. What's interesting to me is that if you look carefully, Beltran/Chakotay grins after he says it. He's not in focus, but it's easy to see if you look at him.

Irene Artho

I find it interesting that Q (from the comet) when he gets beamed to Voyager is 1) Human and 2) in the correct Voyager matching Uniform. I guess he managed to do that within a few milliseconds during the transport or whatever. He had no powers inside the comet (otherwise he'd have killed himself or tried) so how did he manage that neat little trick? Main Q makes sense that he manages to match things, but he must see where he's going before he appears. The being human part is probably less puzzling as he seems to have been locked inside the comet in human form.

Irene Artho

You're right! He seems to snigger while saying "tastes" and he smirks or grins right after finishing the sentence - quite clearly visible despite being out of focus. :D

Laura

Maury Ginsberg is not unimportant. He played Isaac the copy guy on Friends and was involved in the beginning of the whole “We were on a break” story line that drove that show for years. Thanks, Q 😂

Moonglade

Just watched everything in this podcast again cos it's brilliant! Thank you everyone for your time and input, you made this J/Cer's year! I just wanted to say, I think the name of the ensign that B'Elanna was mean to and that Garrett made laugh (the actress) was Ensign Kaplan. I believe we see her again in "Unity".

Mathew Sands

whew...heavy---- Good work DF crew covering such deep content.

shannon brown

I love all the guest stars you have brought on (Frakes, Russ and Phillips being my favorites so far). You have great rapport with them (almost as good as with each other). Thank you for doing this!!

Jeep Richardson

Thank you, Robbie and Garrett, for approaching the subject matter with such sensitivity and thoughtfulness (especially since you guys had almost nothing to do in the episode!).

Riley

Someone keeps bumping their microphone!

ST Fan CB

The USS Voyager Hallmark Ornament came out for Christmas 1996 (I have one) and this episode aired in Feb 1996. So it was probably an early production model used in the episode. Speaking of tasting the comet....the first thing I ever remember seeing Beltran in was a cheesy 1984 movie called Night of the Comet. So maybe he tasted a comet in that movie and has previous experience. The expression on Garrett's face when he is interrupted mid rant by RDM dropping his bottle then babbling on about sponsorship is price-less!! I totally agree with the premise of Garrett's rant. F that Maury guy!

Sweet Wild Thing

So funny about the de Lancie "urgency trick" story - whenever I was holding it and really had to go, my mother would say, "keep holding it, it builds character." Obviously there's something to this! XD

Christina

As someone who deals with suicidal ideation, this episode always hits home when I watch it. I have a disease that is a long, slow death, as well as severe chronic pain that will only worsen as time goes by, it’s difficult not to consider it, as my quality of life is pretty sucky. People should be able to leave this life with dignity if they so choose. Should be between a person, doctor, therapist. With that said, I do love this episode. Having both Q and Riker in the mix is fantastic. Q’s comments to Janeway may seem a bit cringe to us now, it’s completely understandable given when this was filmed and having the first woman captain, and just Q’s overall attitude toward humans. He had to give her a bit of ‘tude because that’s what he does best. Great to have Frakes on again! He’s so wonderful, always so happy and uplifting.

LauraFox

I did not know that, turns out he is the most important of them all haha
