When I watched this back in 96, I remember saying "there's that guy from Parker Lewis can't lose". That's a series no one ever talks about but it was fun. It's a good idea to post the hotlines above. I'll be listening to this podcast tomorrow.

Tom Elliot

One of my favorite episodes of Voyager. I used to work in a restaurant kitchen shortly after this aired. Gerrit Graham used to come in every day to eat. Super intelligent guy, really smart. I didn't ambush him with my Trek love because I don't believe in asking people for autographs etc during their private time. But when one of the servers told him I was a Trek geek, he signed a menu for me and wrote a message on it and sent it back into the kitchen. Lovely guy.

Forget tasting the rainbow...taste the comet! :D

Chris Knapp

Great episode. Very intense subject matter. I only have one small sticking point. When Quinn popped Janeway to the mess hall, and he produced a generous portion of “Welsh Rabbit” for her, the writers made a rather glaring error. The dish is “Welsh Rarebit”, not “Rabbit”. There was no rabbit. Welsh Rarebit is simply a sauce made by combining cheddar cheese, whole milk, butter, a little dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and beer, and spooning it over toasted bread points. I loved when Neelix asked: “What’s a rabbit?”

Elisabeth Westner

So, "Well, you're the one who wanted to go home early, Robbie" is Robbie's equivalent of "Shut up, Wesley!" I shall remember that and try not to say it too often. I love what you said about Nepenthe. I felt the same way about that episode. It was really emotional to see Riker and Troi and Picard all together again after all these years. And the kid who played Kestra was an incredible actress and I hope they have her back again too.

Elisabeth Westner

Also, Robbie, you *were* damn cute back then. Not sure what happened, I guess it's the lack of fake sideburns? (Lol, jk, you're still pretty cute for an old guy.)

Noel

The volume seemed lower than the others. Is there at least 1 courtroom episode to all Star Trek series? I wonder how Q did not know that Starfleet is in this quadrant.

Saskia van der Meer

Gosh I loved this podcast. "Death Wish" was a beautiful episode. Ofcourse, seeing John DeLancie as Q is always a treat, and then Riker making an appearance, brilliant! But the star of this episode is definitely Gerrit Graham. Just listening to him in this episode... man. Also, LOVED hearing Jonathan Frakes! And yes, Nepenthe was a BEAUTIFUL episode. It made me cry and my Trekheart was just almost blowing up with emotion.

This is one of my fave episodes. Moreover. thanks gents for going beyond and embracing the open talk on suicide. There is a stigma on mental health as you say. Encouraging people to talk openly about it is a huge part of the battle. People also need to be willing to listen. I was in a film last year that was made primarily for police in Australia that was all about getting the stigma removed and getting people to talk. The story I told was the story of several cops who had reached the edge and are are thankfully still here. Learning their stories was incredible experience. What was more incredible was what helped them get through, If you have a spare 45 mins. Have a look and let me know your thoughts. Jeff https://pfa.org.au/dark-blue/

I really enjoyed the deeper discussion on this podcast. The episode’s larger theme seemed to steer the discussion right out of the gates and it led to a much richer conversation. Well done.

As a person dealing with chronic and at times severe mental health issues, I don't think it's appropriate to say that Robin Williams would still be here if mental illness were simply talked about more, and that he hadn't received sufficient help. For me, I have been on countless medications, seen countless mental health professionals, and it's starting to seem like my mental illness will be lifelong. I don't condone suicide, but I 100% understand why it happens. Treating mental illness is so much more complex than treating 'physical' illness, and it's a sad fact that not everyone recovers from it.

TheDeltaFlyers

Thanks for your perspective. This was a tough episode for the guys to attack. We all knew it would upset some. Everyone has a different perspective and experience. They did the best they could at sharing their feelings and thoughts with no absolutes. Simply their perspective, which is not fact.

Victoria

I appreciate that. I'm sorry if I spoke harshly.

Melanie

I'm still catching up so I just listened to this one. Great episode guys! A tough topic but you handled it well. And for the record, the Voyager ornament came out the Christmas after this episode. I remember all of us joking about how I guess we knew what the ornament would be that year. And yes, I have one. 😁

Elias Nordling

There was a one-off coutroom episode in TOS. The other series decided there should be one every season for some reason. TNG and DS9 does one per season, and Voyager had one in season 1 too. In Season 3, there is Distant Origin...

Horatio Moradi

The dish is often known as Welsh Rabbit, though. Just one of those quirks of language. It's not a writing error.

Horatio Moradi

Great to hear Scott Bakula is as lovely as he seems.

As thoughtful as the episode might otherwise be, Q's sexism is a blight on Voyager. Star Trek is supposed to be aspirational, an optimistic look at a possible future for humanity. What message are we sending when an omnipotent being is such a dismissive, bigoted creep to our first woman captain? Sisko had the right idea - Janeway should have punched him right out of the series.

Catherine Green

Ok so I know you made this comment months ago but yes! It would quite rightly have been totally unacceptable for Q to have broken the 4th wall in the same way on DS9 and made racist comments to Sisko, but it’s interesting that the powers that be thought the sexism to Janeway was fine. The worst thing is I don’t remember seeing anything wrong with it when I first saw it in the 90s. Times change thank goodness.
