The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is The Thaw. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week Marvin Rush, the director of this episode and DP for Voyager, joins for the discussion of this episode.

I'm so glad you guys discussed the theme song! I'm new here and that was a recent question of mine.

Loretta Lane

I used to have nightmares about this episode as a kid! Still wigs me out.

Evan Ardolino

Just paused the podcast to come say this. I was successfully terrified of Fear as a kid.

Bigiorne

I used to hate this episode because it made me feel so claustrophobic. Then I watched SFdebris critique it, fully expecting him to completely annihilate it - instead, he explained why it is one of the best Voyager episodes ever.

Stefan Au

ok... so it's 3 am and someone is knocking on my door... two options: it's either a guy with a gun or a clown - and you're asking me which is worse??? Uhm, of course, the guy with the gun is worse... Hello? He has a gun - yeah I know what he's up to and it's no good. And I'm not even saying I agree necessarily with the assessment that a clown is an insincere character by default and that you can't tell what he's up to... but for argument's sake in this situation let's say that this is the case. Then at least if it's the clown knocking on your door there is a chance he means you no harm.

Dee McGee

Great insights from Marvin!

Becca English

I think we need more Megan on the podcast! She's so funny!

Rich Gross

I love this episode! If there could be one episode where I could be there on set watching it be filmed, it would probably be this one. One thing for sure, though: I’m one of those who tends to listen to TV shows at night to help get to sleep. This is one of the episodes I can’t use for that! The energy and chaotic music doesn’t allow for that for me. There’s something in the cold open that always gets me a bit: Tom says “This ship was made for combat performance, not musical performance!” I realize that (The) Voyager was made after the first battles with the Borg, so I can understand having the ships more equipped for combat, but not specifically designed for it. Great job in this one, Garrett!

Rich Gross

Robbie: I was just reading on 23andme about genetic traits. Apparently, cilantro tasting like soap is a genetic thing!

Justin Rhoads

I’m just barely into the podcast but I’m not sure I really understand the overthinking with Tom’s “skirt chasing” (as it’s called) in regards to his line about chasing a girl... guys try to chase girls, in a manner of speaking, they’d like to date all the time. It is a perfectly normal behavior. I don’t understand how that one line is in any way a reversal of Tom’s character evolution.... especially when it’s just Tom and Harry in a room together. Literally every guy on the planet has had that conversation with a friend...

Mike Gu

Wow, Marvin is amazingly insightful. Obviously a master of the art form, with full-bore humility to boot. 🙏🙇‍♂️🖖 Love Cirque du Soleil - have been to three shows! Tip-top Delta Flyers podcast for a peak Voyager episode!

Jeremy Taylor

The DF theme music is great. It's simple but catchy. I like Megan shutting down Garrett's attempts at humor in the reaction clips. Interesting to hear about filming on a stage that wasn't normally used by you guys, and doing a full rehearsal which normally didn't happen. It makes me appreciate what an unusual episode this was, both in production and in the final product. This is an awesome podcast and I believe you guys are making something that will serve as great companion piece to the Voyager series for years to come. Keep up the good work!

Jeremy Taylor

The dream-world clown is scary He gets ahold of Harry In goes Janeway But she's not there to play She shows Fear it should've been wary

Stephanie Baker

Thank you for Marvin Rush. I loved his explanations about continuity. Thank you for all your efforts to put this together. It was informative, easy-to-watch, and funny (as opposed to The Thaw which is NOT easy to watch!).

Matt

Robbie! Best limerick yet!

Matt

The actual storyline, very creative, love it! The clowns..ugh I just can't. LOL.

Matt

Bringing in the experts to play the clowns is brilliant, and shooting this one as if being in the virtual reality and being aware of how different that is was so cool to hear. I never picked up on the nuances on how the shots were set up that you all discussed until now.

Matt

A clown is an insincere character...yes, this! :)

Daniel

TBH I like the intro Theme haha. Its chill and fits the vibe

John Marlowe

Best podcast yet. Bring on more directors!

Karen Chuplis

I have to stop the video and say OMG so cool we have the director!!!!! (This episode is really very good. It is so eerie and uncomfortable and just plain spooky).

Karen

What a fabulous episode and a fabulous podcast to go with it! This episode is a perfect example of great science fiction. It takes the concept of Fear and examines it from every angle. And it turns it on its head when you have a negative emotion turned into such an uplifting message at the end when Fear is conquered. Marvin's insights were fabulous too. Hearing his insights make me appreciate his direction of the episode even more. Some things I noticed (such as the spinning background when Janeway turns the tables on Fear) but others I'll have to look for when I watch again. I loved watching the clown fade into the darkness as Janeway tells him how she tricked him and how Fear is meant to be conquered. The last scene is one of my favorites in all of Voyager.

Janet Potts

Yep. According to their website, "Many people dislike cilantro (also known as coriander), describing the taste as "soapy." These genetic markers are located near genes that help determine your sense of smell through proteins called olfactory receptors. Some of these receptors detect aldehydes, chemical compounds that are found in soap and thought to be a major component of cilantro aroma." I have 2 of the 3 three genetic variants that cause people to not like cilantro. I also despise black licorice. I don't know if they've identified the gene or genes responsible, but it's believed that it, too, is tied to a particular genetic mutation. When I come across recipes that use cilantro, I either just leave it out or replace it with something else like parsley or some other herb, depending on the flavor profile of the dish.

Janet Potts

One of my brothers was afraid of clowns. He said that it was the makeup and that it reminded him too much of the masks worn by hospital personnel (he'd had some medical issues early on and spent a lot of time in hospitals). Humans are programmed to react to human faces. The clown makeup distorts that which probably contributes to an unease about them. Plus, clowns are unpredictable and always playing practical jokes on people. Toss in a few horror movies with clowns and voilà! Fear and loathing of clowns ensues.

Eric Bennett

Having Marvin Rush as a guest was great! Wonderful hearing what he had to say about directing this episode.

Mary Jac Greer

Oh my gosh!! Amazing episode. Mr Rush was so great and interesting and really informative. I think this has to be my fav to date and also, this particular episode was not one of my more favorites, until now. It just moved way up on my favorite episode meter!! Thank you guys so much for inviting Mr Rush to take part. He seems like such a sincerely cool great guy. I have a cousin that’s been in show biz since she was in junior high who is 4 years younger than I, which makes her 56 now. I was able to spend several weeks throughout her career, on set with her and experiencing behind the scenes, particularly on her sitcom during the 90’s called Married people. I was always so interested in directing because I knew I couldn’t be in front of the camera and was able to hand with the director a bit. So, this was crazy fun watching today because of the interaction between Marvin, Robbie, and Garrett. Thank you so much for having him participate. No do-overs for anyone in my opinion

Eric Bennett

I always loved the back and forth between Fear and Janeway at the end: JANEWAY: Starfleet captains don't easily succumb to fear. CLOWN: What will become of us? Of me? JANEWAY: Like all fear, you eventually vanish. CLOWN: I'm afraid. JANEWAY: I know. CLOWN: Drat.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

What a great podcast today with Marv Rush. I must admit when I first watch "The Thaw" it scared me. I now have a better appreciation for it with all that went into making this episode and now I'll go re-watch it. Thanks everyone.

Favian Claro

This is a great episode! Worthy of being Voyager DVD bonus material. A must-see for aspiring directors. So much to take in. I liked this episode already but Marvin Rush really made me appreciate it more!

Mihaela Grasley

What a fascinating episode, both tonight’s podcast and “The Thaw”. I found extremely interesting your stories and, especially, the inputs from Marvin Rush! Even though “The Thaw” is one of the more difficult to watch episodes, at the same time, in my opinion, is one of the best episodes of Star Trek franchise, complex story and implications, very well played and excellent directed. Thank you all three of you for telling its story!

Laura Johnson

Loved having Marvin Rush as a guest. He had amazing insights and it was awesome hearing from his director’s point of view on this episode! As a side note, I can’t wait to hear what Robbie thinks of the bourbon! My husband and I enjoy trying different bourbons. (Our favorites are 1792, Bulleit, Basil Hayden, and Four Roses.)

N+D

FWIW I'll always associate the podcast theme tune with the covid-19 era and lockdowns, but in a good way.

Scott Fintel

Fantastic to learn about passion behind the camera; so much goes into making these shows, and hearing about the details makes this so much more fun! Kudo's for a great podcast!

Christopher Collins

I never knew that this episode what shot on a different set than normal episodes of Voyager.

Christopher Collins

Actor Thomas Kopache who plays the character Viors in this episode also played Major Kira’s father twice Kira Taban in DS9 season 5 & 6.

Jocelyn

Sadly, still don’t have sound on my iPad. 😭

Janet Potts

Well, someone pointed out on the FB group that the opening was originally filmed for "Death Wish" but had to be cut for time. Which means Tom was still under cover and it would be in character for him. It's discussed in both the "Death Wish" and "The Thaw" on the Memory-Alpha website. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/VOY_Season_2

Utopia Science Fiction

I was never afraid of clowns until I watched this episode. Now I'm terrified of them. It was brilliant having Marvin Rush join you, he was quite insightful. Thanks again for an amazing podcast!

David

Another fantastic episode Thank you so much!

Lisa Minnesma

I used to think this episode was sooo weird. And I still do lol... but I now have a huge appreciation for it too! It was so interesting to hear the director's perspective! Excellent job!

Lisa Minnesma

I also just IMDb'd who the clown was. It's Michael McKean!! I had no idea! Mind blown!!!

Jennifer7895

I don't know how there could have been a "better" opening music theme then the one you use. This one is perfect and I would love to make it make it the ring tone for my phone. The end shot with Fear fading into darkness is up there with some of my favorite, right along with a no cut Janeway walk from the lift doors to sickbay. Thanks guys

Irene Artho

I only just rewatched The Thaw now. At the start, Paris and Kim get called to the bridge along with all senior staff. In the next shot, we see Janeway walking onto the bridge - and Kim & Paris are already there. So it took Janeway longer to get to the bridge from her next-door room than it took for Kim and Paris? Maybe she had to get her hair ready or something or she wanted to make sure she's the last one to arrive :D Maybe she was busy when the call to the bridge came.

Paul Johnston

I'm glad the DF theme has been bought up as I've thought so many times about writing that it is such a catchy theme. I him it for hours after the show has finished. Not to say that it can't be changed in future but this one is cool!

Jenny

Catching up - so great to have Marvin Rush participate!! 💕

Jeremy Taylor

Really cool to hear from Marvin Rush

Monica McLaughlin

The plot hole in this one that bugs me is when the main alien gets his “head chopped off” why don’t they pull him out and rush him to sickbay and see if they can save him??

Dead_Alewives

This is a good point. I think in an earlier episode the Doctor even says that he can potentially revive someone who's been dead for like an hour or more.

ST Fan CB

I hate this episode because I have a fear of clowns and this episode just triggers that. In response to the question who do you fear most: the man with the gun or the clown. I would ask the man to shoot the clown then call the police on the guy.

Sarah L.

Late to the game here, but when my wife and I argued over who's the better captain, the phrase "dude, Janeway scared FEAR" pretty much ended the debate. If that's not badass, I don't know what is.

Christina

For me, this is the worst Voyager episode. It is SO hard for me to sit through it. It's just so weird and makes zero sense. I can't wrap my head around it.
