I thought the same thing! Maybe to show Tom Paris's reaction to being called "helm boy"?

Dee McGee

Robbie was close. Pulp Fiction came out in October 1994.

Rich Gross

It always seems like the people who write the Netflix synopses only watch the cold open.

Rich Gross

OK, I just have to say: That line that the doctor says on the bridge about “Anyone can stargaze on the bridge, but the real action will always be in sick bay”, is, in my opinion, one of the most awkward lines in the series. It just feels like it totally doesn’t fit the scene. I get what the writer had in mind, but I just don’t think it works. It breaks the rhythm and flow of the scene and I wish it had been cut. Then we get to the scene with Chakotay and his jealousy and the little competition between he and Q. That is SOOOO out of place. The relationship with Chakotay and Janeway just doesn’t merit the behavior in that scene. it’s a shame that the opening missed the mark so much (at least for me), because I really liked the rest of the episode.

Snap-zoom! So that's what it's called! I'm watching ENT at the moment (first time to go all the way through), and in Divergence (S4;16), starting at about the 30 minute mark, things get VERY melodramatic. Phlox *whips* Archer around in a kind of dentist chair, ~34 minutes in, and a few minutes later there's a *snap-zoom* on Capt Hernandez. The score is over the top, and there's lots of Steadicam work (if I'm not mistaken), and the whole episode is honestly kind of a disaster from a directing perspective, imo. More's the pity, because the writing and especially the acting are solid! Apologies to whomever directed it, but I think it's a good example Directing Gone Wrong. Conversely, the snap-zooms in "Q and the Grey" were delightfully quirky, and served so well the whimsical nature of the episode and these heightened scenes at the peak of the storyline. Such a fun episode, and so well directed! I love all the director-y things I'm learning from this podcast!

Andrew Murray

Chuck O'Tay. That works for "Chuckles".

Andrew Murray

I love the follow up to Q and the Grey (Q2) is where Q (senior) dumps Q (junior) on "Aunt Kathy"

David Turner

It’s a shame the overexposed film was junked because I wonder with modern techniques on computers they could restore it or at least get something out of it. Perhaps that’s asking too much but I know with photos taking in the raw file format on my dslr camera you can touch up incorrectly exposed pictures relatively easily.

Andrew Murray

Isn't this the one where Q tempts Janeway with being sent back to Earth, right there and then - or a later Q episode. Janeway refuses of course....but it would have been the short cut home.

Andrew Murray

For the studio crew of Voyager production, location shoots were (to use the title of a certain Trek film) "The Undiscovered Country"?

Andrew Murray

My do over is finally make Q a crew member!

Karen Chuplis

I do want to see that darned holodeck shirt you never wore Robbie! Lol

Dean Makin

For the record, De Lancie has done 12 Trek episodes, still less than you'd think. Enjoyed the review as always.

Joseph Zodda

All Janeway had to do is touch his finger and give birth to a Q and the ship would have been home! LOL

Karen

That was the previous Q episode where Voyager rescues Quinn from the asteroid. Q was trying to bribe Janeway into ruling in Q's favor and not granting Quinn asylum aboard Voyager.

Irene Artho

I always loved the verbal exchanges between Janeway and Q in this episode! And Janeway's face palms. "Admit it, it has been a while" "And it's gonna be a while longer" "You're confident, passionate, beautiful" "And totally uninterested" :D Q's behavior in this episode reminds me a bit of Pepé Le Pew in the Looney Tunes. In general Q seems a bit Looney Tuney to me - maybe that also explains the appeal for the character in general.

Erica Larabee

Me too!! Q2 is one of my favorite episodes of the series. It is so good overall, and I love that they cast John de Lancie's real-life son Keegan to play Q junior.

B obrien

Rebecca and Robbie. Do you relocate to Utah for work or lifestyle? sure must be drier than Vancouver.

Sony

I don't think Chakotay was jealous. He was reacting to Q's invasion of Voyager just like any other member of the crew. They all know he's trouble.

Sony

A Southerner moving to Utah? Probably not as strange as being lost in the Delta Quadrant for 7 years. Congratulations on your new house and enjoy the mountain trails. Mountain biking and X country skiing is where it's at!

Sony

“She’s already had 3 lizard babies with me”, “After going to warp 10 with Tom Paris, it’s all been downhill since”. “My loser is everyone but the Doctor because ‘the real action happens in sick bay’” Robbie's on a roll!

Sony

"Bar rodent", "Helm boy", "Chuckles", “What are you doing with that dog? And I’m not talking about that puppy.” Clearly, etiquette lessons don’t exist in the Continuum.

Sony

I give Q and the Grey an 8; I like silly, comedic Trek. John de Lancie's Q is one of my top 10 Star Trek characters and Suzie Plakson is a lot of fun to watch. I looked her up and found a youtube video of her song "Didn't wanna do it". She's so funny and talented.

Justin Rhoads

Riker reacted the same way in defense of Picard... did that make Riker jealous?

Sony

Yep. Picard warned all of Starfleet about Q and the Voyager crew knew he was a trouble-maker.

Sony

Q: Is it the tattoo? Cuz mine's bigger! Janeway: Not big enough. ‎️‍🔥

Miki Tracey

I'm with @Sony I liked the story and the camera work, it took me far enough a way to not catch all the WTFs I caught on the 3rd watch. Also, I about died from that last easter egg between Tom and Harry. All it needed was Neelix laughing in the background and Tom chasing Harry out of the mess hall.

Sony

Too bad the first (and only?) episode of TNG Garrett saw was that non-Star Trek abomination "Code of Honor". I can't think of a worse first impression for anything. It made me cringe and always skipped it whenever it re-ran. Otherwise, I highly recommend watching TNG (skip s1e03). It gets better around season 3.

Sony

I didn't even know there was more after the credits. Mess hall gossip, sweet!

Ericka Birkenstein

"Finger copulate" hahahahah But also I love, love, love Garrett's bit about armed conflict being archaic. Well said.

Jennifer7895

Can I just say, I absolutely love how hard you two ship Janeway/Chakotay

Maggie Metz

Q is an awesome character and I so enjoy his naughty (but sometimes inappropriate) behaviour! Its a shame Miss Q did not make another appearance during subsequent seasons. I loved the banter she had with Belana. One of my favourite episodes. Love your work Helm boy....... and Ops boy!

Dannielle Kaminski

I couldn't quite put my finger on what the wording of helm boy reminded me of and then I finally placed it. Obviously not the same sentiment or context but it reminded me of when Princess Buttercup calls Wesley farm boy in "The Princess Bride".

Majik

New poster, here! Long time trek fan, now watching all the series with my sons (who are hooked!)... A couple quick thoughts... 1. Garrett and Robbie mentioned Suzie Plakson's other Trek roles. I believe she also played a role on DS9 - that of some type of an intellectual 'savant'. If I remember correctly, there were a couple of episodes where she was one of a group of similar individuals, and she played a brilliant, but lighthearted role in which she was quite flirtatious. I think with Bashir. It's been a while, so pardon my vagueness :) 2. I keep coming back to the line in the previous Voyager 'Q' episode, "Death Wish", where the other Q implies in some way that the Q are not omnipotent, and that it may just 'seem' that way. Kinda keeps lingering on my mind when I see these awesome Q episodes. Was he implying in some way that they utilize some sort of technology to do all the things the Q do? Just as if a caveman looking at a modern 21st century human using a lighter to start a fire would appear 'omnipotent' to them...? Just thinking out loud. Great forum... Thanks G&R! (no rock band reference there, btw...haha)

Justin Rhoads

Q was in 14 episodes of Star Trek (12 if were not counting two parters). Twice the number Garrett stated in the podcast. (Scratches head)

Lisa Minnesma

The furrowed brow was definitely a great acting moment! A very funny reaction! It made me laugh! And the "helm boy" line was hilarious too!

Julie Miller

Suzie Plakson was not on DS9. However I can understand your mistake. The actress you are thinking of does bring a Plakson-like quality to that role and looks a bit like her.

Julie Miller

I agree. I find this much less disturbing than I otherwise would because it is of a piece with how Q behaves with everyone, regardless of gender, and particularly the way he plagued Picard. It takes on a sexual aspect because Janeway is a woman but the context of Q's character makes it much less sinister. It also helps that deLancie plays those scenes with a playful tone rather than a menacing one.

Lisa Minnesma

Robbie and Garrett, do you guys read the comments on Patreon? It's understandable if you don't sometimes. I'm just curious!

Julie Miller

This episode is deeply silly. The US Civil War as a metaphor for what is happening in the Continuum isn’t bad, but Q’s idea that having a child with Janeway is going to fix it is so ridiculous even John deLancie can’t sell it. It is hardly exemplary of Trek at its best and I wouldn’t show it to the uninitiated. Yet I love this episode anyway. Witty banter and innuendo with deLancie AND Suzie Plakson? Q and Janeway hurling saucy dialogue at each other? Sign me the hell up. If you need an actress who can match deLancie for obnoxious-but-charming presence and supercilious sass, Plakson is definitely your woman. I have loved every character she played in Trek and every second she is on screen makes me smile. “Helm boy.” “Bar rodent.” Oh, I am so there for it.

Lisa Minnesma

Are you a writer? Because you definitely have a way with words! Also, I agree. The logic behind the story is silly. But for entertainment, chemistry and enjoyment purposes, Janeway, deLancie and Plakson definitely deliver!!

Andrew Murray

Kind of ironic that he wants some more "grievously savage race" DNA in the Q continuum.....

Taisho Rose

Arrrgh I'm falling behind but I LOVE this episode! All episodes featuring Q were consistently entertaining and I think the dynamic between Janeway and Q is perfect. She shuts him down so effectively! THIS is how you write a strong female character- not overpowered, scantily clad, or constantly fighting in a literal sense. The repartee between Janeway, Q, and Mrs. Q is hilariously awkward but not creepy awkward. Kudos to the men of Voyager for being protective of the captain. The good side of Tom's character really shone through in how he handled Q's attempt to commiserate with him and Harry and and mine info from them. I don't find the metaphor of Civil War silly since the Q are infighting (the consequence of the resolution of a previous episode, no less!) and I can envision the writer(s) pitching this concept as a modernized, comedic Gone With The Wind Janeway as a more feminist version of Scarlett O'Hara and Q as an inept Rhett Butler. Please keep bringing up the Lizard Babies as much as humanly possible because for 25 years everyone pretended that never happened lol

Rosemary Kelty

Great point about the inept Rhett Butler, Taisho Rose - Q just doesn't hold up well as a human too well!

Rosemary Kelty

I love Suzie Plakson's line about how she has always liked Klingon females - this is clearly a tongue in cheek reference to her role as K'Ehleyr in TNG. Great Easter egg for Star Trek fans in that line. Also, it's such a shame that neither Garrett nor Robbie know the dynamic between Q and Picard. I think that Q is much goofier in Voyager. He's much more menacing in TNG, at least in my opinion. Q has a funny moment with Sisko in the first season of DS9, so the DS9 guest appearance accords with his representation in Voyager vs. TNG.

Roy Spaan

I've actually been trying to channel Chakotay's "I know I have no right to feel this way, but.. " in a personal experience. It's so honest yet respectful. I hope :P

ST Fan CB

Where are the End credits publicity photos? Whats up with that?

Carrie Schwent

This is probably my favorite Voyager episode of the entire series! You guys though missed several opportunities to refer to Miss Q as Susie Q!!
