The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Rise. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week they are joined by Ethan Phillips and Tim Russ for a short interview about their thoughts and experiences while filming Rise.

Rise:
When a Nezu planet is hit by asteroids, Voyager intervenes by sending Tuvok and Neelix to help with the rescue mission.

I loved this video. The camaraderie between the four of them is clear. I realised several times that I was smiling while watching this. I don’t have as much of an issue with the breathing while they were on the roof. Tuvok is more likely to cope with prolonged exposure to that atmospher. He may have been weakened due to being out there so long so the fight scene isn’t too far fetched to me.

Robbie, orange was my favorite color growing up. Not your typical girl favorites like pink or red, but orange was my color!

Loretta Lane

Robbie, if it makes you feel any better, my husband and I both get giddy to watch Threshold merely for the comical factor of how ridiculous the storyline is. Not a dud. It's iconic. :D

SnazzyO

I really enjoyed the Neelix/Tuvok confrontation. Tuvok was more Tuvokian than normal and I was so glad Neelix busted him. And that the others stood up for him. ‘Last word’ scene was great.

Robert G.

I wasn't a big Neelix fan going back to the pilot. Tuvok was such a dick to him that Neelix won me over eventually and the friendship they shared redeemed Tuvok in my mind.

Dee McGee

Love seeing the four of them together!

J

Chairman Cat? I have to check that out just in case.

Rich Gross

Hearing Robbie talk about loving the color orange. Thinking of Rebecca’s hair.

Dustin Snyder

I wonder if at the end of the series you guys would consider doing a Retrospective sort of video on how your opinions and thoughts have changed over the course of this re-watch and project.

Tashicat

hahaha Garrett, its not just you... i heard "Mr Spock" and i turned to my cat n said "wait, what now?" lolol

Tashicat

I also could swear that at one pt, Neelix says "A-Lee-see-ah"

Tashicat

but maybe its just the romulan ale lolol

Craig Drebit

Thanks for having both guys on at the same time! I loved watching all four of you chat about the old days.

Craig Drebit

How appropriate is it that Johnny Phillips has a book titled "Paris" behind him 🙃

Andrew Murray

Kate's hair style should be called "the Hepburn" since Kathrine Hepburn I remember from films used to wear her hair like that.

Chris Knapp

It was so great to see Tim and Johnny.

Andrew Murray

So the Tether distance in this ep is almost on par with the orbit of the ISS - 330KM so that idea might actually work if we had the tech to actually build the tether and the Mag-lev vehicle, it could work for transferring ISS crews.

Andrew Murray

Neelix only worked on models - well Voyager took that idea from "Flight of the Phoenix" because the "aircraft engineer" in film that claimed he could rebuild the plane, but then admitted building model planes, not full size.

Andrew Murray

Mentioning threshold, the "babies with Janeway" bit was about five minutes before closing credits rolled. The rest of it was Tom trying to achieve Warp 10 (which was the more interesting part).

Matt

I just about choked on my coffee when Garrett did his Neelix impression, "ah Mr. Vulcan"...LOL!!

Mathew DeFreitas

Great podcast! I rewatched Rise a week ago. I really enjoyed it. I thought the effects worked well in comparison to other Berman-era shows. None were bad. But Voyager continues to push the “threshold” open with different VFX. My only issue with this episode was that they skipped through Tuvok and team got back onto Voyager. The writers forgot that you can’t beam through shields and Voyager was in the middle of a battle. Otherwise great episode.

Mike Gu

A Neelix and Kes 6-7 page relationship resolution scene that was cut?! A most high crime. This on-the-fly language lesson is a really good one. Robbie, your phonetic Mandarin is ever amazing. Gougou 狗狗🐶 Maomao 猫猫 🐈 😂😂😂😂😂

Matt

Mr. Vulcan and Mr. Neelix back together again!!

Daniel de Rooy

Having watched the show many times growing up, I always enjoyed rise. Like Tim said, it was an excellent mix of who-done it mystery, close-quarters pressure cooker drama, and solid relationship/character development for Tuvok and Neelix. And all of it was executed very well I think. Those mag-lev carriage scenes feel very tense and heated. Yes, the VFX definitely could have been better. And yes, some fights could have been staged differently. However Robbie, I really enjoyed the open-door, air-escaping fight and the roof fight where Sklar gets the jump on Tuvok. To me, that works because it was deafening up there and Tuvok wasn’t expecting anyone else to come up and attack him. As for how he is able to breathe up there, I would reason that because he was secretly a spy, maybe he’s actually just one of those invader aliens surgically-altered, and therefore could breathe. However, I’m very forgiving of any fights involving Tim. He brings such a physicality to Tuvok, that Tuvok always feels capable and powerful. Like in Learning Curve when he grabs Dalby and threatens to break his arm. Dang son! Anyway, loved seeing and hearing from Tim and Ethan. Loved that little insider info about the Kes and Neelix break up scene. That was so needed. Shame we never got to see it.

Matt

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Yeah some of the CG was a bit cheezy, but that's par for the course from that time..CG was still a bit wonky. The dynamic of Neelix and Tuvok is my favorite on Voyager.

Christopher Collins

“In for the penny, in for a pound” I remember Benjamin Franklin printing in his annual almanac that he would print each year at his printing press.

Karen Chuplis

So funny. I didn't notice when watching but watching Garrett's recording of that scene, I immediately thought "That seems like some dubbed kung fu movie". LOL!!!!

Kimberlee Ostler-Naong

That book Ethan referenced by Jeri Taylor is called Mosaic and you guys should definitely check it out. It was the first book I read cover to cover and the audio version is AMAZING! It's read by Kate Mulgrew and it has sound effects and music. I still have the casset tape. I loved Jeri Taylor's writing style and her version of Janeway.

TheDeltaFlyers

Love those guys! Best thing to come out of Voyager for me was the friendships we all created. -Robbie

TheDeltaFlyers

I've always said, if they just cut out that last 5-10 mins it would have been a great episode! -Robbie

Craig Main

The followup Pathways is great as well. Bob Picardo did the audiobook

Lisa Minnesma

The ending made me laugh!! I was wondering what was going to be improved because neither of them were really in this episode!

Sony

Neelix wants to help Tuvok has no faith in him Together they win ~ Robbie Neelix assigned to Tuvok’s rescue mission, Crash leaves all in a dire situation. Carriage flies, Vatm dies, Vulcan logic loses to intuition. ~ Garrett

Sony

Kate Mulgrew also played Kathrine Hepburn. Kathryn Janeway, Katherine Hepburn and Kate Mulgrew. A lot of Kates. I'm surprised her character in OITNB wasn't named Katya (short for Ekaterina, the Russian Katherine).

Sony

Sometimes people get the same ideas and coincidences happen. I've had tons of ideas for inventions, scripts, jokes and memes then after Googling find it's already been done.

Sony

I bet Robbie was disappointed that his Federation prison uniform wasn’t orange.

Craig Drebit

As an FYI, I checked the Fan Club from back in the day and Rise was in the middle of the pack when it came to ratings. It was #89 of 158 😁

Sony

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire! We don’t need no water let the mother-🤫 🔥 😁

Joseph Zodda

What a great episode! This podcast, which started out good, gets even better as it goes on.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

I like this episode for the main fact of the character growth of Tuvox and Neelix. Thanks to for having Johnny and Tim on together. I loved they dynamic those two characters brought to Voyager.

Trine Våbenø (Triyan)

When they got beamed out at the end, back to Voyager, how did they get through the shields? Voyager was under attack at the time, and the shield was up all the time. I have not read all the comments here, sorry if somebody asked this before :)

Andrew Murray

also, did they retrieve the crashed shuttle? Even if it couldn't fly, they could salvage usable parts from it or just beam the entire craft up for repair/salvage? Would they leave a craft around for the native population to find? (not that they weren't warp capable so no prime directive issues, but even still I wouldn't think it wise to leave star-fleet technology lying around. (that goes for any episode concerning crashed shuttles).

Andrew Murray

Or maybe not; the ISS would also have to be in geosynchronous/geostationary orbit (same-spot above the earth) for the tether to work.

Sony

Just watched the second half. Too cool seeing 2/3rds of the Voyager dudes getting together and talking about old times. Tim seems to be enjoying the sun. Great episode.

Sony

Rebbeca’s Tuvok toon is too funny. He looks annoyed because no one can annoy a Vulcan like Neelix.

Sony

I like Garrett’s idea about Janeway replacing Neelix’s sister as the one who brings him out on adventures and how Neelix’s love for Janeway stems from his love for Alixia. It makes sense that some aspects of Janeway would remind him of her.

Sony

Disappointed that they didn’t air the scene where Neelix and Kes amicably end their relationship. Especially after hearing Johnny Ethan talk about how good the writing was. Loved Neelix's confrontation with Tuvok, it just got real! Powerful moment and great acting by Johnny and Tim.

Sony

You're right about the lame fight scenes, they were so Kirk vs Gorn. Voyager getting shot at like a sitting duck is what happens when Tom Paris isn't at the helm - the other pilots need to be retrained.

Jenny

Re Neelix having red blood, I think we knew that from Projections, when he freaked out thinking he’d been hurt but it was just spilled tomato sauce on his shirt. (It was all the Doctor’s hallucination/malfunction, but given it was the Doctor’s POV, and he would know Talaxian blood, I figured it was established then. Though I’d have been happy for them to have gone with orange or even yellow or pink, something that would be consistent as an undertone of the makeup they gave all the Talaxians! But I think going with that when Neelix was *actually* bleeding would have been rightfully considered inconsistent with established Talaxian facts from Projections…not that they always cared about that. 😛)

Bethany Avery

See I was thinking the orange merch should be something that starts “Robbie, you’re the one who wants….”

Bethany Avery

I have always felt there was something a little jarring about those lines so when Garrett pointed it out I got excited and yelled “That’s it!!”

Christopher Collins

This was so great to hear Ethan Philips and Tim Russ experiences on this episode. I agree that this was one of their better episodes together. I also enjoyed them later on in season 6 with Riddles. I agree this episode was weakest on action, effects, and makeup. But I think this episode holds up better than most because of the story and character development of Neelix and Tuvok. This episode also holds up due to the reality of the scientific concepts sounding so unique.

James G. Jones

Well I would like to day, I would be interested in seeing and buying a orange captain proton t-shirt. Maybe like a limited edition run during October for Halloween season. Orange shirt with black lettering.

Bonnie Chiaccio

Just joined as a Patron and a long time fan of the show. I can't wait to catch up one all the back episodes. Great work you guys!!

sab ewell

I think for some of the rougher episodes it had to do with budget cause the 2 parter, basics 2, the 25th anniversary ep Flashback was this season also, then the Borg and Scorpion... it's been said they only get money for the whole season and they have to budget it out for the whole year. So yeah not only are they tired like Robbie said but I feel like they were running out of money too haha

Kristyrose

Yes, make an orange shirt 🧡🧡

Maggie Metz

It was awesome to hear Robbie say he was enjoying watching Voyager. Now y'all know why we are Delta Flyers!! Really loved hearing from Ethan and Tim and watching you guys catch up. Keep up the great work!!

Christopher Collins

You have to rewatch the interviews and the first two episodes are really interesting. There was a great one on the guest star from season 2 episode with the Androids that is interesting to hear his insights because he portrayed several characters on Star Trek including the episodes Equinox in season 5 to 6 and in the DS9 5th season episode Soldiers of the Empire.

Stephanie Baker

Tom's afraid to approach Belanna and rightfully so. Love the end credits scene since there wasnt and Tom and Belanna in the episode.

Stephanie Baker

It's interesting that most of the guys on the podcast did not watch many episodes of Voyager. I really enjoyed seeing Tim Russ and Ethan Phillips interact, perfect for Rise. Thank you to all The Delta Flyers team for this gift.

Daniel

Literally one of my fav bromance on the show, Tuvix always a good combo

Ericka Birkenstein

I can't believe I'm just realizing this is 100% the plot of Flight of the Phoenix.

Taisho Rose

I like this episode! It's decently written, and has a lot of heart and character development. I feel this is the first episode where they finally started writing some much better material for Neelix. I don't agree with the whole "Trilogy of Terror" designation. The last ep had some interesting concepts for the Doctor, some decent character growth for Kes and Robert Picardo's acting was great, the Jekyll and Hyde influences just sort of felt a little too heavy-handed in execution. The main issue I see with this ep is that it is somewhat reminiscent of the TOS episode The Galileo Seven and the movie Flight of the Phoenix, so people are naturally going to claim it's a rip-off without giving it a chance to stand on it's own merit. The other issue is that I feel the director really didn't capture enough of the claustrophobia, danger and tension, and filmed the fight scenes in a bland way. I can forgive the FX because at the time, those were CUTTING EDGE effects for television. Star Trek was always the leader of the pack in that regard and started using digital matte paintings and graphics on TNG. Babylon 5 took a chance on having 100% CGI FX on their show, and though it paved the way and influenced the entire industry, a lot of it doesn't hold up today. I think the Voyager graphics still mesh pretty seamlessly with the action and there are very few moments where you are taken out of the story because they knew the limitations of their craft and used it sparingly, combined with other techniques. The movie The Mummy Returns which came out in 2001 is supposed to be more advanced than an ep of Voyager from 2007, but the effects in that are laughable. I think Sklar falling out of the MagLev carriage still looks loads better than CGI Dwayne Johnson! Lol.

María José Rodríguez Gómez

I finally managed to watch the whole episode, my first one in Delta Flyers! And I enjoyed it a lot, thank you very much to all the people that make possible this podcast!. I´d like to give an opinion about something that surprised me when i heard it during the episode: I didn´t know that there were so many people who don´t like "Threshold" . For me, it is one of my favorite episodes because there are several great scenes between the characters and it allows you to get to know Tom Paris better. He shows himself to be vulnerable and the viewer can empathize with his aspirations and realize that he has been struggling for some time to make a place for himself in the world and is finally clear about what he wants to do and is going for it. The scene between Tom and Janeway in his room is really moving. Also I think it´s the first time that I see B´Elanna being tender trying to comfort Tom in the sickbay, by holding his hand and stroking his hair.

María José Rodríguez Gómez

Even more, Tom reveals us more about his life as a child and teenager when he is lying in the litter and talks about how much he loved his room. And the answer of the Doctor to the information about the loss of his virginity is simply great.

María José Rodríguez Gómez

In my opinion, there are a lot of funny moments in between emotional and exciting moments in "Threshold", and the end of the episode with the baby amphibians is simply very funny. We couldn't help but laugh at Chakotay and Tuvok's comments when they made the discovery. After that, again a great scene, both emotional and funny, between Tom and Janeway in the sickbay. For me it was a great episode.

María José Rodríguez Gómez

I agree with almost everything you´ve written, but I have to say that in my opinion Babylon 5 CGI and specially space battles are still very nice today. Anyway, I´m not an expert in this and perhaps my opinion is more influenced by my love for the series than by my knowledge of special effects, but they still work for me. Specially the space battles. Oh! Those space battles! :)

Eliza Thomas

What a pleasure to see Tim and Johnnie!

Paul Johnston

Agreed a t-shirt is needed with 'Robbie you're the one who wants to leave early today I love Rise as well cant believe its pointed out as a horror 3 episode curve. Agreed also how did Tuvok and Neelix get back to Voyager if they can't beam over with the shields raised

ST Fan CB

Most websites agree that Voyager is the 4th best Star Trek Series. The top 3 differ by website but generally TNG and DS9 were routinely rated higher than Voyager.

Seth Uricheck

I've never understood opinions that rate DS9 over Voyager. I liked it well enough at the beginning, but DS9 went downhill so sharply about halfway through that I've never been able to finish the series. I'd say TNG and Voyager are the two best Trek shows.
