The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is The Raven. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week Bryan Fuller joins for a short interview.

Seven of Nine experiences flashbacks from her life before assimilation, and flees Voyager in an attempt to join the Borg again.

Can’t help but wonder… Everyone on Voyager refers to every species in the Delta Quadrant as “aliens”. Wouldn’t the Voyager crew be the aliens? They’re the outsiders. 😆

Diana Meredith

My kids call my husband Papa. I actually can't stand "daddy"...just rubs me the wrong way. They also call me Mama. I suppose it is old-fashioned in some ways, but I love it.

DogBlud

That interview with Fuller was delightful, it's so nice to hear some real enthusiasm for the characters from one of the former writers. It's such a shame to hear (again) that that enthusiasm was stifled in the writers' room, and not just because it makes me think of what the show could've been.

Marian Bieniek

I usually agree with Robbie's criticisms, but I think he was a bit too harsh on The Raven! I've always really liked this episode. I really enjoyed the interview with Bryan Fuller.

Glam City Rocker

Robbie had me CRYING I was laughing so hard. "Detective picky"... I'm gonna be sad when this podcast ends... I look forward to it every Sunday night! Please keep doing it even after u finish with voyager! Talk about other stuff! The two of u are so great! I always pump it up on my IG & tell ppl to listen. Much love and respect!

Right? It's kind of a big bummer that they wanted the show to be more episodic and less serialized. Seems rather lazy to me, and they could have done so much more if they'd followed through more storylines.

Elisabeth Westner

Episode pitch for Delta Flyers: after this is over, do TNG reviews! But seriously, they should at least do a review of the First Duty (cue Garrett snickers) because I'd love to hear Robbie's take on working on TNG.

Elisabeth Westner

Giant, GIANT LOL about Picard needing a woman sitting next to him to tell him how to feel. SO DAMN TRUE. I loved Bryan's take on that being toxic masculinity, because I never really realized that before but it is really true, isn't it? And some of the actresses on TNG did mention how that show was really a boys' club and how hard it was to deal with, being female on that set. I'm glad Voy tried to get away from that to some degree. And this explains a LOT why Voy is my fave Trek; Kate/Janeway has a lot to do with that.

Glam City Rocker

Yes maybe after this go thru every trek series... Enterprise, ds9, tng... And have interviews !!!

Glam City Rocker

The Delta Flyers is the best way to wind down every weekend and start each week positive!

Elisabeth Westner

Ok, I just rewatched this ep because I don't know it very well but your review was great. Small point of disagreement, though: I'm with Beltran on the guest stars/catcher's mask-wearing aliens sounding like a Shakespearean actor and a New Yorker and it was pretty hilarious.

I felt the Season 5 episode Dark Frontier went heavy on the retconning, and one of the things were the diaries from Seven's parents, containing all sorts of super useful info dealing with the Borg that had just been lying around for a couple of years. But revisiting this episode, it makes more sense, Janeway tells seven "these diaries are yours to look through", and she replies "yeah, but I need some time". My pet peeve with the episode is the whole concept, that seeing a bird would trigger old memories about the ship Raven. Guys, it is just a name, memories don't work that way. Annika probably hadn't even SEEN a real raven in her life. Now, if Annika as a kid had been fascinated with the ship's name and decided to learn all about the creatures called ravens, it could have worked, but this is not the story the episode tells us. The link between the ship and the bird is way too weak.

I loved this episode of the podcast, and the interview with Bryan Fuller. His point about Picard's toxic masculinity was a tough one for me. He was always my favourite captain (SACRILEGE on a Voyager podcast!) I always appreciated Picard's understated manner, while being able to tell that there were simmering feelings just below the surface - admittedly more from the acting than the writing. The fact he always kept it under control and maintained his professionalism was admirable, for me as a youngster. The women on TNG seemed to act more as an audience substitute, telling us exactly what was being felt on screen. Admittedly the writing for the female parts in TNG was problematic, so maybe everything I just wrote out is completely wrong :) I also appreciate Voyager's less old-fashioned writing and characters in the end.

Bryan fuller was an absolute delight to hear on the show this week!!! 3000% just obviously full of life and exuberance, but also ridiculously knowledgeable on the craft, and didn’t require too much prompting. I loved seeing both Garrett and Robbie prompts for info then allowing Bryan to provide his wisdoms. Geez this was just so damn fun, on an episode I’m not the biggest fan of. Thank you very much and hope to see more of vitamin B

This wasn't an episode of voyager that I loved but this is definitely my favorite review so far. I laughed through most of this.

Jennie Marie

Standing ovation for the Bryan Fuller interview! Best guest so far. Love his honesty, ideas, and enthusiasm. Please do have him back on the pod!

Noel

The good thing about this episode is that the next three are 3 of my favorite ST episodes. I can't wait for those and maybe some special guests.

Matt Sidor

I second this, that interview with Bryan was amazing. I loved learning about him and hearing his perspective on the show.

Hey guys, I've been a patron for a few weeks and this is my first comment. First off: I LOVE this podcast and it really makes me appreciate Voyager more than ever (which I first became a fan of as a teen in the late 90s - with the first Seven episodes), and gave me incentive to start rewatching all the available Treks, as one other commenter here said as well. You both are amazing and your insights (and those of your guests) give such a great perspective. Secondly, about what Seven calls her father: "Papa" is also the German way to say "Dad". It's what I call my dad, lol. That combined with the fact that Jeri Ryan sometimes talks about her German heritage and that "Annika Hansen" strikes me as a profoundly generic German name makes me think Seven's parents were probably German. Not that it even matters in Star Trek Earth, but one can assume, endearing names would probably survive even a language unification on the planet.

David Weston

Ok. Organelles is a legit thing. It is a specialized unit in a living cell that has a specific task. Like the mitochondria that’s an organelle

Jef Lemaire

I always thought Seven's parents were Scandinavians. Hansen is a very common name in Denmark.

Knickers AKA Nicki T

B’elanna had a little backstory when they were playing with removing the Klingon DNA from her baby… I think..?
