I am late to the Delta Flyer party. I just started listening about a month ago. It is so refreshing to hear both Garrett and Robbie’s point of views on each episode. It is so different than the typical fan perspective and it adds a new layer to understanding what goes on behind the scenes and what the actors were thinking about their characters while filming. I really appreciate Robbie acknowledging the change in societal norms versus when these were filmed in the 90s. No excuses for what happened and how different groups of people were portrayed but acknowledgment that that isn’t the norm now and is cringe worthy when watching it in 2020s. A special thank you to Robbie for telling Brian Fuller that you were sorry that he experienced what he did as a gay man. Many times it was not a comfortable situation, and as a gay woman I have experience similar. It melted my heart to see Robbie acknowledge the pain and not Regarded as something that happened in the past really enjoying these podcasts

Sherry

I just learned of this podcast, I wish I found it earlier. This is the best DF episode review so far, hope to see more of what B Fuller contributed in the future casts.

Just FYI eating is a skill that unfortunately does not come naturally to everyone and can be lost if not done orally for a period of time even for adults. My 5 year old son has medically complex ARFID and has had swallowing and feeding difficulties since birth.

Dee McGee

Respectfully, I really would like to know why someone who is enough of a fan to subscribe to this podcast is always so critical.

Dee McGee

I guess Borg only asymilate relevant data or Seven would know how to chew and swallow food.

Justin Rhoads

Y’all kill me sometimes… that shuttle has forward phasers, presumably “modified” by Borg tech since we see the green glow, which blasted the door open just prior to it exiting. It didn’t just crash through the door… 🤦‍♂️ though the VFX could have probably shown this a little better. But in the history of Trek it’s been seen a few times a shuttle basically shooting the door out as it exits. I actually find it fascinating how unpredictable it ends up being which episodes you guys like and which episodes you end up critiquing a ton! Ha that’s one of things I am rather enjoying about this adventure. Your reactions of some episodes become so radically different than I expect sometimes ! I wonder, I guess Star Trek is coming off Netflix! I presume you guys will have to use Hulu soon?

Dustin Snyder

Great podcast. It was nice to see Bryan Fuller and hear about how this episode came to be.

bakura

would probably make sense you had a falcon on set rather than a raven, i'm not sure you can train a raven

Andrew Murray

That episode (Lower Decks) where Boimler is trying to get Paris' autograph - does that remind you of Trekkies at conventions - are they THAT obsessed?

Andrew Murray

Seven describes the "black bird" in her flashback to Janeway, who eventually makes the connection to "Raven" as in the Hansen's ship (or as part of discussion with other crew).

Andrew Murray

The "Papa" vs "Daddy".... Lilly in "First Contact" comments that "borg" sounds Swedish, so may be that fits. Kind of Bjorn Borg (The Swedish tennis player) or something perhaps is what Lilly could be referring to (or maybe coincidence)

Saskia van der Meer

About how responsible the Hansens were concerning Anika/Seven: In a later episode, Seven expresses anger towards her parents for being negligent, they were studying the Borg while knowing it was dangerous, she felt it was bad parenting ;)

Farrah C

lol, yes, she shot her way through the shuttle bay doors, she didn't crash through them. I wondered, why they thought that.

Lizzie

Thanks for another great podcast episode. I was very happy to see a cameo appearance by Walter the dog - although he didn’t look particularly impressed by this episode! And how fantastic was Bryan Fuller? So open and honest about his time working on the show. I really hope he returns for future episodes.

Farrah C

"Organelles" are subcellular structures (like mitochondria, or the nucleus). It wasn't anything unusual for the doctor to have mentioned. You guys probably forgot your high school biology, but I did lol at the idea that they were part of French cuisine ;)

Lisa Minnesma

For Garrett! I just watched the very beginning when you guys read the Netflix synopsis. Maybe try reading IMDb's synopsis also, if Netflix is too vague!

Tashicat

the shuttle bay I understand, what gets me is seven had her shields up on the shuttle, so how did Tuvok beam in when you cant transport thru shields?

Tashicat

other borg do adapt pretty quickly tho, the personal shielding is pretty well known, it was not unusual for Seven, sorry Robbie

peter

I didn't think Seven crashed through the shuttle-bay door. I thought she blew it up with phasers (or some borg weapon)

Lisa Minnesma

The interview with Bryan Fuller was so great! I'd never seen him before but it's nice to put a face and personality to the name whenever I hear you guys mention him now. I appreciated his thoughts and he looks like such a friendly guy!!

Stephanie

You joke, but this is exactly my problem with the Borg and 7. They know everything and can do anything. No use for the rest of the crew or to even fight back. They should be unbeatable.

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

I adore Bryan Fuller; he created one of my favorite series. "Hannibal" He is such a talent; I am thrilled he got his foot in the door with Star Trek open submissions program.

Jennifer Z

Oh man! Now I wanna read every pitch that Brian Fuller submitted. There must have been a swatch of killer ideas that never got picked up. I also wish we could have gotten the epic 2-parter of Tom and Harry getting assimilated by Seven. What a sale!

sab ewell

I hope Bryan comes back again and again like Lisa Klink does lol. Enjoyed the interview with him and he wrote lots of my favorite episodes!

Taisho Rose

Ravens are some of the most intelligent birds in the world. They actually use tools and can mimic human speech. They are very trainable and a lot safer to handle than raptors. The bird they used in the scene is totally a raven- they are enormous birds, with a wingspan of about 4 feet which is the same size as an average hawk, which is why they seem so intimidating.

Stephanie Baker

If I wrote fanfic…I would call the story “Mini-Collective, Tom and Harry get Assimilated.”

K

Ah, this one made my 🏳️‍🌈🖖❤️ so full! Great podcast, start to finish. Thank you!

K

As a tng fan: That picard take — WOW. And not untrue.

Daniel de Rooy

Seconded! I also think they should watch the actual DVD's - netflix and other streaming services don't have the best production versions of the episodes - the DVD is much better

Daniel de Rooy

Garrett and Robbie touched on this but Seven is super human and fragile in this episode - especially the Sickbay scene as Garrett mentioned. She talks like a regular human which is so different to the rest of the show. This, like many things in television, is an example of an oversight in figuring out character I believe. They probably wanted to make her more human but then saw how emotional Jeri acted in this episode and said: "Whoa, let's dial this back." They wanted to draw it out simply because if Seven had transitioned into becoming a normal human so soon, they would have cashed in on her uniqueness of being this strange ex-borg individual. The whole point of why she is such a great character is that she ISN'T human. As subsequent episodes show, the Seven of Nine we are shown after is much less vulnerable and human - she has her clear focus of being an ex-borg but still clinging to their ideals, while slowly embracing human ones.

Kevin H

Ditto! Hit me like a ton of (true) bricks. Doesn't take away from my enjoyment of TNG, just amazed I've never come across such a succinct version of that take.

Kevin H

Really enjoyed the episode recap with Garrett and Robbie and the interview was fantastic. So glad we get to look forward to future interviews with Bryan Fuller--listening to him was so fun, I can't wait to hear more.

Mary Burch

FCPS reporting for duty! :D In all seriousness, I can agree that Seven's parents had noble motivations, and that going off in search of adventure is admirable. They lost me when they deliberately went in search of *The Borg*, an enemy that very nearly destroyed the Federation. That's when it stops being a pursuit of adventure and more like taking your kid off to fight the Taliban with you.

Catherine B

I have been listening/watching from almost day 1 and have never felt the need to comment, but I just HAVE to say that I hope Bryan comes back again- it was so refreshing and engaging to hear his take on the series, prompting interesting insights from you both... and what he would have done with your characters looking back. Loved it.

Michael Frame

Bryan’s authenticity and unique POV was awesome to hear

Kassandra

Great episode, detectives Picky ;) A little remark: Papa is also a widely used term for the father in Germany. I just thought it was interesting in that way, that Jeri Ryan is born in Munich, Germany. Aaaand another living legend at The Delta Flyers: Bryan Fuller. Thanks for the great interview <3

Moonglade

I now have a mental youtube video image of Voyager knocking Bomar ships aside to the sound effects from a Pinball machine, then ending with a 'tilt' wipeout LOL! Great episode recap, guys and so lovely to see Brian Fuller on the show :) I thought Ethan/Neelix was so funny in that messhall scene.

Eddie Ordaz

Oh My Gosh Tom! RELAX!!!

Eric Bennett

Wow, not sure why the guys think 7 of 9 rammed the shuttle bay doors. The shuttles are armed. She most likely would have blasted through the doors and then flew through the hole.

Eric Bennett

What I think is lost a lot nowadays is how many episodes that they made of Voyager every season. 26, right? That is just not common today. How hard it must of been to write episode after episode, this quantity and quality of episodes, week after week. Great having another writer being interviewed. Love it!

Samantha

Didn't seven almost assimilate the whole ship by herself at the end of Scorpion? They had to link her to Chakotay and distract her to blow out something in her neck to stop her. Borg have personal shields that adapt. Her Borg stuff was reasserting itself. I love the idea that she was always this dangerous, or close to it.

Samantha

I'm glad, personally, that the episode turned into what it did. I got pretty bored pretty quick of the becoming Borg thing. It's very easy to sit back and criticize showrunners and to say every ep should have cost a zillion dollars, but when actually in that position, I suspect it would feel quite different.

Joseph Zodda

I think the worst overall mistake that CBS made was to get rid of Bryan Fuller. Discovery would have been sooooooo much better with such an experienced Trek person running things.

ST Fan CB

Slow motion was just used a few episodes ago. Come on man. No rule changes about the Borg...they acted the same as always. Not fair to compare graphics in a 25 yo show with what we have today. When Seven left Voyager in the shuttle, there were three Bomar ships around Voyager. Why did they not pursue Seven when they had the chance? Further, Tom and Tuvok left Voyager in a shuttle with a plan to slip through the Bomar net. Again, what happened to the three Bomar ships around Voyager that would see them? Even if they had left, I assume that the Bomar would be monitoring Voyager very closely. How could Tom and Tuvok launch undetected? Additionally, the reason that Janeway knew what to look for is because in a previous episode, she found Seven's (Anika) file and knew that the name of the ship she and her parents were on was the SS Raven; a federation ship. How is the Hansens taking of their child out into space any more irresponsible than Starfleet officers taking their families out into space like on TNG or to DS9?

stef e

This high school biology teacher was horrified when you started talking about organelles! I was so excited to hear a science term mentioned and not be 100% used incorrectly, which is what normally happens, lol!

Jenny

Yeah, we hear (rather than particularly SEE) the phasers firing before she blasts through the shuttle bay door. On visual only I wouldn’t know it, but there is that telltale phaser sound right before the shuttle comes through. I’m definitely with Robbie on the episode overall though, lol, just that (and organelles being actual biological things!) wasn’t among the many things that bothered me. Curious if Seven is ever fired upon with phasers again - I can accept her nanoprobes blocking her from phaser fire like they do for drones, but only if that holds through the rest of the series. (If there’s occasion for her to be shot again - maybe by alien weapons.) I’m not hung up on Picard maintaining that, but I would be for Voyager.

Jenny

Seven being able to replace everyone on the ship (…in addition to being the focus of seemingly every episode) was a BIG problem a lot of us had getting on board with her, and the casting change, back during the original airing.

Jenny

Problem is you can *hear* the quick phaser sound effect, but since the visual effect is from the outside, they didn’t *show* it. Presumably she was just right on the heels of the phaser and they thought it looked cooler for the door to break around the shuttle, but they should/could have vaporized the hole in the door from the phasers we *did* briefly hear, then had the shuttle plow through.

Jenny

It is a fun word, though! 😂 I’d bet a lot of people (most adults way out of school) wouldn’t be sure if it was a fake or real thing. I happened to really enjoy biology and work medically-adjacent.

Jenny

Yeah, I think it seemed new because maybe we've never tried stunning or shooting her with phasers before to have discovered that she's Borg in this respect rather than human. (Though I'm curious whether they'll be consistent with that throughout the series, in terms of alien fire - guessing not. But based on this, projectile or manual weapons (like the WWII guns in the holodeck, batleths, knives, etc) should be the only weapons to work on her, not energy weapons.)

Megan Moore

Way too picky about this episode. I don’t think this episode did things that weren’t done before at all. When seven flew the shuttle out she shot the doors first. You can hear the phaser sound. The entire crew was unprepared for seven to suddenly have borg shielding and were not ready to figure out a way around that. Her departure was unexpected and the crews reaction and lack of preparedness was perfect IMO. Seven absolutely should have called her father Papa because that is the term they use where she is from. Even today. It is not outdated or old fashioned at all. I loved this episode and definitely think Robbie was overly critical. I also thought the acting by Robbie in this episode was fine. Not stellar but perfectly acceptable. They do back story with Tuvok and B'elana. It wouldn't have made sense to have it take years to get around the Bomar space because at the end they ended up going around. The point was they were trying to negotiate to go through, they wouldn't have taken that convoluted path obviously. They would have kept trying to negotiate for a quicker route or maybe end up going around. But the crap with Seven stopped the negotiations.

Orsolya Toth

I am in love with Bryan Fuller! I hope he will be back many times!

Emily Schuler

Shields, gentlemen! The shuttle has shields, so it doesn't explode when it busts through the bay doors.
