Will talks to musician and climate journalist Jael Holzman (Ekko Astral, Heatmap News) about her experience as a congressional reporter at outlets like Axios and Politico, and the conditions that led her to quit. We discuss the institutionalized bias against accurate reporting on topics like climate change and trans rights & healthcare, the outrageous complacency with baseless stories from the likes of LibsofTikTok, and other incidents of casual “lavender scare” that permeate the D.C. press corp.

Check out Jael’s medium post on quitting congressional journalism here:

I know it’s punk but clipping microphone singing is just unpleasant, even if it’s the aesthetic you’re going for. It’s like running a boss HM2 directly into whatever you’re recording on, but the clipping singing doesn’t even get a cool name like the Swedish chainsaw. The ep itself was fine. If you don’t like this comment, come at me, Chris.

Dan

Can I ask, is the health concern for the health of trans people is that if they don’t get transition treatment they will kill themselves? Don’t want to google this because all the anti trans stuff out therw

Penny

I mean I guess that's one way to put it sure

Brent

Jael referenced her own risk of going into menopause. Others are at severe risk of heart failure. But yes, the suicide risk is serious

Dan

I thought that was after hormone treatment started.

Brent

Didn’t catch that you were drawing that distinction. Suicide is probably the most obvious problem with denial of care. Don’t get too caught up with the health issues—if you just look at it as being compassionate about the needs of others—should be reason enough not to deny someone care

T

This has been a powerful week for slop so far

Regular guy

When you're being interviewed you can be the main character for 45 minutes, chill

Regular guy

Love the ep but I object to the notion that mainstream news is doing any sort of a good job covering climate change these days

Schwartz666

Great interview! Listening to the album now and it fuckin rocks. Thx for the recommendation, Chris!

Agent Grange

There are some *insufferable* squares in the comments of this one already complaining about everything from punk music to their own taciturn disapproval of trans liberation. Some of you swapped your terminally online reddit enlightened atheist phase for leftist aesthetics and it shows man.

Justin Zuberka

great interview. loved to hear her viewpoint. thanks for the content

William

What does this mean? Do you know what you were listening to?

William

How can I be anti-trans if I cheered for Caitlyn in the 76 Olympics? Thought so.

Ardy Rezv

No hate but why do country’s we look up to in Europe for their health care ban the practice for minors?

NYCM&AHole

Nah I’m talking about recording styles.

bangoduck

because they're still reactionary capitalist states despite a better infrastructure.

mex207

really important episode. well done lads

Ardy Rezv

I don’t understand? Wouldn’t the pro capitalist side be to medicalize children without restriction??

Jaime Christley

Europe's really going through it with far-right shitheads on the rise. It may be that many of their health care systems are far superior to the US's but they're still really fucked in other ways that mirror ours. I guess the lesson would be, you could convert to socialized medicine, M4A, even pass the ERA, but you'd still be spending a lot of time beating back the mouth-breathers and the Nazis. The corollary to that being, it's still worth trying to get those good things done.

Ardy Rezv

I’m talking about some of the Scandinavian countries that I thought banned the practice for children. Didn’t know they were going right wing? Always thought about them as social democracies.

Sai

stenographers to power Hard to feel anything but disdain for bourgeois journalism these days.

Evelyn

talking about “medicalizing” children is a ridiculous way to talk about trans healthcare. bringing in a kid for insomnia or the flu isn’t referred to as “medicalizing,” it’s exclusively a term that makes trans healthcare sound malicious

Evelyn

William

Damn, sorry to hear that, son. You’ll lick ‘em next time?

Ardy Rezv

That’s the way they (the countries that banned it for minors) categorize it.

Ardy Rezv

I think people making that argument equate it to elective surgeries like cosmetic. Don’t think there is anything “ nefarious” about asking if people should be adults before making life altering and sometimes irreversible medical decisions, but hey you have your opinion. You don’t have to be a reactionary in the other direction just because chuds are anti trans.

Lo

The thing is that people on the transphobic side freely conflate going on puberty blockers with GRS and outright sterilization. Going on puberty blockers or even HRT are *completely* reversible medical decisions but it’s more exciting to speculate that thousand of kids are getting mastectomies or whatever

T

I'm getting an "I'm just asking questions..." redpilling vibe here. Yes, Scandanavian countries have been going right wing, and trans people are an easy scapegoat. But trans rights isn't fundamentally a right wing or left wing issue. Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, I only remember hearing about trans rights from libertarians. Just like how the Spartans, the most right wing people in history, were all gay, you can imagine a trans-friendly right wing society. Anyway, if the medical stuff has generally good outcomes, then it's good. If not, then it's not. But it generally seems good as far as I can tell. Children have been getting plastic surgery and have been given HGH for a long time purely to look better. If anyone isn't complaining about that but is complaining about trans stuff, they're a grifter or retard brainwashed by a culture war that everyone will be embarrassed by in 5 years.

Ardy Rezv

You can get whatever vibe you want m8. To your point I’d agree say that’s true on both sides of this “debate.” 95% of people don’t care about this issue. It’s mostly for the terminally online.

Shiv

Such a great interview and bonus rocknrollllll

NYCM&AHole

I ain’t licking nothin

fasd asdfa

This rocked, great interview great guest

Yoshi

Weak-ass take. She is the subject of the interview ffs

lake

You suck!!

Ardy Rezv

Great response babe 😉

Gage

Incredibly funny that this entire episode can be summed up as "all us journalists are actually stupid and lazy, sorry".

Gage

Vaush fan spotted; radical liberalism identified.

Steeeeve

See also: "social contagion", a way of describing people changing their perspectives on exposure to new ideas in a way designed to make being trans seem like some kind of memetic virus that overrides human intelligence

William

Or overworked and don’t want to write something their boss will make them take more time to rewrite

thicchatlogan

standing up for yourself and walking out of a field that has institutional biases that make you feel unwanted and uncomfortable isn't "main character syndrome" dummy

Ardy Rezv

Isn’t vaush who all the virgins that use to hang out in the chapo sub reddit fled to after they shut it down?

Doug Cartel

Media: we speak TRUTH TO POWER!! Meth addicted skinhead: trans people rape your kids and convert them to islam Media: tell us more!!!!

Dick Waglin

Queer Slime and Lavender Scare are great band names

Thom

Great question and the end, Chris.

Jaime Christley

is it just me or is the web interface for Patreon only showing the 2 most recent replies?

MEAT CLOWN

No it's doing that for me too

MEAT CLOWN

At least on the homepage, when I go to the chapo page all the comments show up

——

I’m stupid. What’s the actual debate here. What’s stopping adults from getting gender affirming care they want?

Shfifty_five

With socialized medicine, they have better institutional oversight and they do long term studies, we don't. Scandinavian were the first place to stop due to research and this was pre far-right in gov. They were the first places to do medical transition in minors. Also, morso in the UK, there were a a few horrific scandals, lots of malpractice suits, and once they got more complete evidence, it showed that it's at best not helpful, at worst, a bad idea. Also, 16 is the age you can start in Europe. That's pretty reasonable IMO.

Shfifty_five

I mean she was a journalist for Axios and Politico.... Nothing against her but to ever want to work for them is crazy.

Mochi

Awesome episode! Glad you're covering Trans issues 💙💙💙

Isaac

Well that’s just like, your opinion man.

Isaac

Red Scare fan detected! 🚨🚨🚨WEEEEE OOOOO WEEEEE OOOOO WEEEEE OOOOO🚨🚨🚨

Ernest Ambrus

Remember, there is an arbitrary tipping point to your grievences; the thing you were after is good before it personally offends you. Ie Politico.

Ernest Ambrus

The guys are 0-2 in picking representative figures in university or trans activism.

etienne

oh i dunno, for starters some institutions and practitioners are citing religious beliefs to refuse care and states don't always enforce that?

etienne

gonna be completely real here, at some point i was kind of wedge issue'd into being somewhat uncomfortable with underage trans gender affirmative care or transition or whatever but after hearing the account of a bunch of trans ppl about how traumatic it is to grow up and undergo puberty closeted and how basically convenient it is to use puberty blockers, and realizing that this fake made up issue is just the last bastion the bigots found that's still tenable, now i understand better. fuck the haters protect trans kids

etienne

the AP about the florida law: > For adults, treatment was still allowed but could only be done by a physician instead of an advanced practice registered nurse or other professional. It required the patient to sign a consent form in person while in the same room with the doctor, meaning the treatment couldn’t be done on a video call or otherwise online — something not normally required with other medical procedures. Violators could be charged criminally and medical providers could lose their licenses. imagine that but for injecting insulin for diabetics. death sentence

Nathan Explosion

great ep. if you want to know more about the media just doing the trans-hysteria at the whim of activist bigots and terfs, check out michael hobbes on his twitter or the last couple eps of maintenance phase.

etienne

if you want to be really cynical then yeah but that's also kinda like saying that if you don't give antidepressants to depressives or antipsychotics to psychotics they have an elevated risk of suicide

etienne

ah shit dude the supreme court just abolished the regulatory state. the one part of the gov that worked kind of okay, now every dipshit circuit judge can overturn them

the Minneapolis Kid

I'm old. Its a little bit weird to me. Its relatively new, and I'm skeptical of either side claiming that the science is settled. one decision is absolutely better than the other, but I'm perfectly fine allowing medical organizations, doctors and the people involved, parents and children making informed decisions based on the best information available at the time. Its a complicated issue, like many medical treaments or procedures, there are absolutely 100% going to be people that go through transitioning that is detrimental to their wellbeing, but there are also going to be people who are restricted from care that would help them, and really we probably won't know the absolute answer for 20+ years, give people the freedom to make the choice themselves.

james

Debate ep! Debate ep! Debate ep!!

Christopher Mesler

HELL YEAH, LETS GO. Jael absolutely crushes this. This is how you approach this issue, which is very dear to my heart. What a fantastic person. Loved this.

Jimmy McMillan

Yeah they tell you some "Kids are transitioning as early as five years old" BS that makes you think it's a bit early. At that age being trans is just wearing different clothes. We should mind our own business and listen to actual trans people's experiences

Jimmy McMillan

My mom got knee surgery and regrets it. Fuck this trans health care scare BS, my political issue that no one should get knee surgery!

Jimmy McMillan

They could just be slightly poor. My health care doesn't cover dental or eye care, so I think top or bottom surgery would be a hard sell

M.R. Alchemist

All love to Jael out here defending truth and science!

Jimmy McMillan

I'm just concerned for trans people. When we as a society step on their throats, they have a hard time breathing and that's a problem

Cardboard

More "fuck work" episodes, they give me life

auf die Welle

great sound. amazing analysis. fuck work.

etienne

yeah i get that you feel that way but there's also about a century of science on it that has been covered up for ideological reasons, a vast body of it literally burnt by the nazis before the war, a lot of it could not make it to the public because of widespread queerphobia back when even being gay was just not even legal. we would have known already if we didn't have a completely systematize reign of queerphobia for all this time

Shanti

this was really illuminating and well done, thank you!

MeatStepLively

My 11th great-grandfather was the 2nd colonial governor of Jamestown and my uncle was James Monroe. The other side of my family were Germans chased out of eastern Europe by the Bolsheviks. My mother was born in a refugee camp in Austria. I have much worse opinions swimming around in my head than a couple of casual Slavic race-scientists

bangoduck

"long term studies" aren't exactly driving the trans scare in Europe if you turn your eyes towards Britain.

bangoduck

"better than America" dosen't mean medically ethical across the board. where'd antivax and the right for your kid to die of whooping cough come from? A fucking British quack and their media.

Ardy Rezv

Was speaking about a few of the Scandinavian countries not UK

Jimmy McMillan

I thought I was a good ally but when November from Trash Future changed her name my first reaction was, 'Hell no! You were born a trans woman named Alice and that's what you shall remain'. Sorry people. I'll try to do better

David DeCorte

The track used as the outro actually does rip pretty fucking hard tbh.

etienne

oh yeah when I was a teen I used to read a lot of Iain M. Banks and I thought that the part where the Culture citizen can decide inside their mind to trigger an endocrinological change to switch gender was the coolest thing ever and that if I were one of them I'd swap out instantly. not trans irl tho

Shfifty_five

The "long-term studies" come out of Scandinavia.

lake

Great job at being a useful idiot for people who want trans children (and adults) to die or detransition.

A Loon

Great new band name!

Some.nerd

Chris has flawless taste in music. Great interview!

Big Tex

“Think what you will about their reporting, everyone in this business is trying to do the right thing” Can the press go 5 seconds without congratulating themselves?

Big Dylan

Totally agree. So telling that even when describing the laying out the absolute black and evil core of corporate journalism and it's complete indifference to people's suffering, this journalist still won't stop fellating her own profession and making excuses for all of her friends

Tina Paracord

Came out as trans over the last year and gender affirming healthcare has not only saved my life, it's changed it massively for the better. Really happy I didn't have to stop listening to Chapo either! It's rare to find a comedy podcast that doesn't directly call people like me child abusers 5 times an episode. Appreciate you all being cool Chapo crew 🏳️‍⚧️

Jimmy McMillan

Good journalists are important. But listening to mainstream media talk about how democracy dies in darkness is kind of like a surgeon who killed people with botched Brazilian butt lifts, talk about how doctors save lives

Kevin

I'm going to be make the bold statement and say that Kamala is the wine-drunk suburban mom we all need right now.

ADIFT

Of all the corruption in DC media that causes them to paper over issues...they seem pretty positive on lgbt. This seems like a personal issue of the last 3 years.
