Oh hell yeah! I was getting worried there wouldn't be a Movie Mindset Oscars Preview this year

Nathaniel

🎶 penis to vagina 🎶

Wesley Campbell Caretto

Can someone reply to this and let me know if they actually watched all the best picture nominees? Would save me the trouble of listening to the first 5 minutes before hearing Hesse say "I actually didn't watch ____ but it looks..."

Tim

ALL THE STARS ARE HERE!!!

Jeremy

Will at least was saying on Letterboxd that he was catching up with BP nominees that he hadn’t seen for the purposes of recording (including the godawful Emilia Perez)

Wesley Campbell Caretto

Can't understand why they don't just watch them all before they do this episode each year. They're professional podcasters! I know they have free time!!!

Brent

I’ll put up this Oscars nonsense just to get more of Will & Hesse

G

Emilia Perez sweep, you heard it here first

G

Si si si!

Ksizzle

Saying megalopolis sucked is like saying having teeth pulled was irritating Is there any other movie with a 120+ million budget that was as spectacularly nonsensical and narcissistic? Genuinely asking let me know if there are i wanna see them

Drew

Finally, some good fucking food

atatrs251

I'm holding off on the Brutalist because I just can't stand Adrien Brody's stupid face.

KyleMSherry

Highly recommend La Chimera, my favorite of the year. Josh O’Connor is so fucking good.

Karl

Movie mindset helped me see how bad and stupid my media consumption was.

Ozzie

When you got movies like Tom Cruise in them, you can’t lose!

Alvaro del Campo

Lmao at Will not seeing the best two movies on the list. Why even do the episode before seeing those

Wesley Campbell Caretto

Hey, he doesn't have a lot of free time. He's a professional podcaster after all.

Ana

Longlegs was like "hey kids, you like Cure! You like Exorcist III! Well, how about a much dumber, much worse movie!"

Horseloverfat

Christopher Walken saying “You Must Be Muad-Dib” has been ringing in my head since I saw Dune 2

Brock Heinz

Bad take on the substance. Lighten up poindexter!

g$

fiiiiiiiiiiiinally

Joey Fazzoli

Hesse’s back, back again 😎

AC5

Which Zevon album is Will referencing? Wanted Dead or Alive? Want to give it another listen but I haven’t listened since I was younger

Thom

I feel weird for having not seen Megolopolis yet given I used to read about it on Ain't It Cool decades ago

Bennett Rust

I feel like The Brutalist gets an unfair reading here. Not a perfect film, but there is a pretty coherent message that the second act drills into, and is accentuated by the epilogue. Laszlo Toth spends his entire life creating art that is so brutal and unforgiving to the senses, as a means of disrupting the systems of assimilation that committed atrocities against him and his family. What christian church in the Northeast US would ever even think to use a cement box and minimal sources of sunlight for their place of congregation? The unfortunate aspect is that, like any piece of art that goes against the grain, it is eventually coopted to fulfill those same systems of assimilation, towards those with power and their personal ends. He goes on to build several christian-oriented spaces in the Northeast. Van Buren uses Toth to build his legacy, and feels personally entitled to him, in the same way Toth's niece uses his life's work to build her own narrative about Israel ("it's about the destination, not the journey"). Toth doesn't look particularly proud or happy when she says that bullshit, because his work was never about that dichotomy, and is pretty insulting to the very harrowing journey he takes throughout his life. How would she know anyways, she barely spoke to him in the time they spent together, and now she's using his legacy to score points. Anyways, sorry for the long screed, y'all are amazing, just wanted to give my two cents.

g$

nvm cant believe how off you were on the brutalist idk how you could interpret the ending as zionist

Ksizzle

Haven’t seen the film but you’re a great writer!

Bennett Rust

oh wow! thank you so much, you are too kind :)

SH

Periodt. (Approvingly)

SH

Everyone loves it and I don’t understand!

Kyle Smyth

'The magic of movies is gone' ??? I think you guys might just be depressed. Was it the most amazing year for movies? No, not really. But the brutalist and the substance were both quite good and the 'it insists upon itself' level critiques you guys are throwing out for them is weak.

B.C.

36 more hours of free time than me and still watched fewer of the noms than I did. God Hesse is a shithead whose half as funny as she thinks her vocal fry makes her. Last time bothering with this metastisis of a spinoff

Tom

You’re right they are viewing the coda as written. The wheelchair bound Lazo, drooling away, his work stolen by the Zionist state isn’t a positive view of Israel. Also the shithead Zionist husband of the niece.

Ty Baron

My only disagreement on you guys' take on the Brutalist is Hesse saying it's not a bad movie when it is, in fact, a very bad movie.

Caleb Beck

the goon saga in Anora took the momentum out of the movie for me and made the ending just not work at all. Mikey Madison was great. -spurned Challengers fan

ThatAintChocolate

I don't think "perfect film" is a standard that's worth comparing anything to. Some movies are messy and I adore them, some are clean and straight forward and I adore them as well. Will and Hesse talked about about the Brutalist's meaning/point, when the very idea of brutalism is the conflict between reality and idealism and persisting regardless. Toth makes this point explicit in the first act, and I think the second act goes completely in the direction of trying to break the illusion in a very visceral, brutal, and absurd way. The epilogue reframes a lot of its mysteries - and made the second half far more enjoyable. I think the way you describe Toth's reaction is so intriguing, makes me want to watch it again. Already have twice. And that's what's interesting to this movie that Will and Hesse missed I think - you are supposed to inject your own meaning/thoughts into it and the film gives you ample space, endless contradictions, and insane material/content to allow your brain to float in. And it makes Will and Hesse's reaction - and a lot of people who aren't complete Brutalist schills like myself - valid and intriguing for me. Some people's reactions will make me think more about the film, some reactions will make me wonder why I like the movie so much. I find Will and Hesse's lack of reaction baffling. It's kind of a mystery to me, with no clear answer. But then again, show a bunch of people a few examples of brutalist architecture/typography and they will go "okay whatever" and show me the same thing and I'll be frothing. I don't exactly know why. And I really like films that force you to enter that space, where you're trying to inject meaning constantly, yet know deep inside that it's kind of a pointless exercise to do in the first place. Kind of like if you were in Toth's building without watching the epilogue - you'd sit there gazing at the windows in the ceiling, contemplating, without really knowing why. 5 bags of popcorn out of 5

Alex Green

This episode gets five bags of popcorn!

Bennett Rust

yeah, there's that scene when she tells them they're moving to Israel. Laszlo makes it pretty clear in his body language and scoffing what he thinks!

ThatAintChocolate

ya i thought this was a great year for movies :( hope will and hesse are doing a okay (im sure they are lol)

ThatAintChocolate

ya I didn't see the coda being anything but one person's interpretation you can kinda roll with or not. you don't know if that's truly lazlo's interpretation, partially true, or neither. all you know is it persisted through the ages of critique and politics - and one person's interpretation (and i think the director's interpretation or personal thought - which is an interesting one, but by keeping lazlo silent, it doesn't have to be yours). fuck this movie was so good come on will and hesse give it another shot

Dean

L takes about The Substance. Saying it’s inferior Cronenberg is goof town when it’s clearly more like Frank Henenlotter. It is also clear that Hesse saw it, liked it, then Will panned it, so she changed her opinion to agree with him for a united contrarian narrative.

ThatAintChocolate

i disagree with almost every one of their opinions in this ep but you need to chill out.

Chris

“God Hesse” is the only part you got right

Bennett Rust

All excellently stated! You're right, the "perfect film" is not a useful criteria, but I feel as though the film had a pretty well stated thesis, and provided more than enough to accomplish it. It was thoroughly enjoyable, one of the better one's in a pretty hard year for cinema.

FunBunny21

"what a time it is to be alive....the oscars" I cackled in the grocery store

B.C.

The pop you'll make getting off her dick will deafen people

Dylan

Will, you missed the two best movies up for the award!

Cole Sheridan

30 minutes into the substance I asked my roommate if the movie ends with a pig in a Nixon mask and monsters on the world. I wasted 2 more hours to find out that it does.

Forrest Taylor

No, y'all are crazy, The Substance was great.

Ksizzle

How does the parts where’s she’s stripping take away from the end? My reading of the finale was her walls come down and she succumbs to her desire for real intimacy.

David Browm

Look, I'm not a religious man...but Jesus Christ Superstar fucking owns

NYCM&AHole

Excited for movie mindset season 3

Nick Anaclerio

Guy Pearce in the brutalist is just Lois’s dad from family guy

Caleb Beck

I agree with that reading I just felt it would have felt more impactful if they were doing anything else than interrogating the candy store workers or showing Vanya running around the strip club: for a solid hour. didn’t hear from Ani as much as you should or get to know her more in that time. just felt listless. Nickel Boys clears

Caleb Beck

agree 100%. I think I agree with the criticism is that the sodomizng scene renders the subtext text to an absurd degree but I like the second act and the epilogue a lot. it’s scathing and sarcastic.

Mikey

Warren Zevon 1976 i would guess

Mauve_Avenger

If you haven't seen it, you really should watch the 1961 West Side Story. It's stellar. Genuinely a 'visual feast'

YearsLikeFevers

Can someone point me to the MM episode where they discuss Denzel?

Alvaro del Campo

He just like me fr, I’ve only seen one of the nominees

tippy

meanie

Warbs

Looking forward to MM3. Glad most of the films mentioned seem easy to stream.

nick

I know that it’s obvious and kind of the point of the whole movie, but Margaret Qualley in the Substance is so hot it makes me upset.

John Swan

Tennis is the shark in jaws btw

Michael Ehrenreich

I’m so glad you called out Longlegs because I thought it was mid as hell

Ana

PLEASE don't do 90s trans shit. As a transsexual woman who lived through that era you guys aren't the ones to critique it. The culture at that time was basically "transsexuals are monsters" times a million and there are very few people who remember it in totality and aren't going to whitewash the sheer level of depravity Hollywood was drowning in those days. Keep that era buried with a stake in its heart where it belongs.

Joey Fazzoli

My gf made me watch it and I did a really good job of not letting her see how much I hated it

g$

idk man I’m usually on a similar page to my close personal friends will and hesse or at least can see their perspective but it’s impressive how off they were on nearly every movie this episode

em

nah it was a mess

Drew Mancini

I also didn’t like The Substance. I called it “the movie that refuses to take yes for an answer.” Like, I liked it until I didn’t, and somehow there was still 40 minutes left. Someone should have taken some scissors to it. I was surprised at all the praise it got. I appreciated Will and Hesse’s input. I don’t understand people who didn’t like Longlegs. I think the only reason people didn’t like it was because it had the greatest marketing, and the movie was just pretty damn good. I had one minor criticism for the plot, but overall I loved that movie. It was just what the doctor ordered when I saw it. I’ve watched it two more times since then.

Jenkum Terry

Haven't seen I'm Still Here but Nickel Boys would be my pick for best picture

G

Mastercard Mastercardson

Jon

I appreciated the Substance’s commitment to showing the consequences of its characters’ actions in full detail. But that was about it. The world felt about an inch deep. And it reeked of Frenchness

Nicholas Poe

Damn the takes have fallen off a cliff this year

Matt Crossin

listening to the review of the brutalist and feel like it’s a totally different movie to the one I watched. Amazing movie!

cashedtrapezoid

I just jumped up in the air when I saw this ep!!!!!

Eon Gattignolo

erroneous uterus sounds like the name of the next musk offspring

Michael

Emilia Perez is better than the Substance. Queer is better than Challengers. Everyone who doesn’t see this is a tiny baby

Brian Taulbee

I don’t care if Lynch hated it, his Dune still holds up. It’s weird and hilarious in the best way. Milking a cat? C’mon. Genius.

Caleb

yeah the thing that really stuck with me with the substance is the portrayal of impulsive self-destruction for short-term satisfaction

“Scoop”

A lot of “Tellin’ it like it is”.

Pedro Lippe

It's terribly frustrating that with every word, both Will and Hesse are SCREAMING "I need to get away from this Hollywood slop" throughout the entire episode, and yet they haven't watched I'm Still Here.

Matt D

Want to go to the Party for Zohran but then I remember I disagree with most of your opinions so that’s maybe not worth waiting outside for standby

gonzopitcher

I’ve sooooo been looking forward to this😻

Caleb

insanely wild opinions in this episode--That's okay, I'll still keep drinking that garbage.

Evan

I loved The Substance. Favourite movie of the year. Maybe I have a dark sense of humour but I found the ending really funny.

Scott Bell

Will and I often disagree on movies and this episode contains many examples (for example, I refuse to watch A Complete Unknown and think its existence is completely offensive to movies...I thought challengers was top 5 of the year) But we've never agreed on anything more than that The Substance was a garbage movie. And since I saw it, I've been telling people who asked, "I hated it, but don't take that as a non-recommendation. I'm a man alone. Everyone seems to love it." But I thought it was such a stupid movie about following instructions that the movie flashes on the screen every 5 damn seconds.

Julian

Furiosa being snubbed is such bullshit. The oscars don't mean anything

Evan

You didn't like them explaining how the Substance worked?

Jack Anzul

The Substance ruled, the body horror was great and it doesn’t hate women even if its messages are heavy handed. And I liked the heaviness of Dennis Quaid slurping prawns! The goons were the worst, and least believable part of Anora. Real cheesiness. Thanks for the episode, can’t wait for the next movie mindset season!

emalco

First the Americans hit Canadians with tariffs, then add insult to injury with their manner of pronouncing Villeneuve.

Arid

Wait, is The Brutalist just a slightly different version of The Fountainhead?

Scott Bell

I did not think it needed to be explained more than one time. They explained how it worked, when a character breaks a rule the audience remembers the rule from when the rules were explained. It doesn't need to be flashed again. And that just undermined everything about it. Is the movie supposed to be about how youthful indiscretions do harm to yourself that you experience when you age? Is it supposed to be about how beauty standards are enforced against women. Or is just about make sure you follow the instructions on medicine label?

Evan

The whole point was that the older version of her could have stopped at anytime but she kept pushing further cause she felt unloved. The guy on the phone tells her she can stop but she chooses not to. Yes, it's about all thoose things. It's a versatile metaphor. You can it read it being about drug addiction, child birth or the pursuit of youth.

K H

Remember when Lenard Decarpio won for being cold?

William Hubel

Mickey Mouse Millennial Movie-Mindsets Want Wealthy Waspy Pennsylvania Patron Pearce

ggmacd

for the next 50 years anyone caught talking about "Dylan going electric" will be sent to the euthanasia room from Soylent Green and shown the scenes in Forrest Gump that take place in the 1960's on a loop until they die.

Benna

I would love an Inland Empire ep.

Matt D

Also if you think wicked or Jacques will win you simply have no clue what you’re talking about

Anders Scholl

Oh man if you're really looking for a Point Blank pairing, it should go with another Parker movie. Or ideally focus on Point Blank but talk a little bit about as many other Parker movies as you can manage to watch, though that might be overly heavy preparation.

Hick Rhodes

I’m with Hesse on Emilia Perez. I get Will’s points but uh… whatever. It was totally fucking nuts, surprising, and fun. But it’s pretty suspect for the academy to reward that type of insanity and reject the Francis Ford Coppola insanity.

Corey Reynolds

I didn’t think Conclave was mainstream slop. I think the opposite was kind of true. Conclave was the respectable, classy, “talking inside” prestige pic of the year. There’s always 1 a year to counteract the superhero or musicals that get nominated. They do it to maintain respectability.

Brooke

Why is it so difficult for yt people to pronounce non-mayonnaise names. Zendaya- as in “DAY and night.” Also- agreed that everything needs more Walken I loved The Substance! It is about so much more than getting old in Hollywood. That they failed to mention the date scene or the disembodied umbilical titty tells me that W & H just didn’t get it.

Michael S. Judge

I knew a real-life guy named Laszlo Toth. He was Mexican and did Food Not Bombs

Brooke

No, he won for fighting a bear.

Brooke

The ending was hilarious and meant to be so. I noticed but who cares about her knees.

Brooke

The beauty of the substance lies in what is considered nightmarish to whom, with differences in opinion being largely rooted in a person’s relationship with feminine objectivity.

thicchatlogan

man I had totally forgotten that pile of shit, the revenant sucked ass but that whole awards season everyone was calling the director such a visionary because he... idk, used natural lighting, or something?

Will Menaker

Sorry boss, I’ll get right on that boss.

Andrew

Will didn’t think Challengers was sexy because he’s not a gay man

Eva

I really do feel like the vast majority of people who saw The Substance completely misunderstood the film, because to say that it is about “beauty standards” and Hollywood is a surface level reading of a text that is actually primarily about internal processes (someone who has internalised misogyny so much that she can’t understand herself as anything more as an object and so psychically collapses when she can’t fulfill that role anymore). I don’t know how people can see this as a social commentary given how obviously dreamlike and dissociative and not rooted in reality the film is. The shows don’t have names that even attempt to sound real, there isn’t so much as a plant in Elizabeth’s house, just a picture of herself. She has no friends, family, no hobbies, no real backstory that exists outside of a TV screen. I can’t understand how people are missing the obvious dream logic the film is predicated on or how they are failing to incorporate that into their analysis of its point. This film is much more about how women can harm themselves, and tbh each other, than it is about the external structures and pressure that get them to that point, imo

Eva

Like people keep saying “the world doesn’t feel that deep”! Duh! Obviously! You think that she called the Late Night Talk Show just “The Show” and thought that this would seem like real life? It’s so obviously NOT meant to seem real!! You’re talking about a universe in which there is a secret company that produces gene-splicing goop that allows people to reconstitute. It’s very clearly not meant to be like, a real place, and the kind of disorientating effect of that is part of what makes it very obvious that this is much more about INTERNAL conflict

Madeline

“Challengers not sexy” is an all-time insane take

Yarblockos

Casino Movie Mindset episode?! LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Dennis

It’s a real shame this is what ppl will think of when looking back on audiards body of work. Read my lips, A prophet, Rust & bone, & Dheepan are all fantastic

William Hubel

Now I’m picturing a cartel version of Mrs. Doubtfire, where Robin Williams goes all the way.

Point Blank and The Limey, please - singular, rhyming

leonard

please do inland empire ily!!!!

Alvaro del Campo

If that’s really you I want you to know I kept listening and heard your apology, also was talking out my ass bc I’ve only seen I’m Still Here anyway 😭

Jesse

Great ep — I’d love to hear Will’s thoughts on Megalopolis. I genuinely thought it was the funniest and most interesting movie of the year

Jacqueline

The Substance has been the first time I’ve ever seen the way beauty viscerally penetrates the psyche of a lot of women. It’s more relevant than race, sex, class, age or any other articulation of identity. Beauty is simultaneously everything and, at the same time, a vane, superfluous preoccupation. It’s a living nightmare. And the viciousness of the movie is the first time I’ve seen any media match the way it overwhelms and undermines a life with it, or without it.

Bman1

Anyone wanna clutch with timecodes for spoilers?

Ksizzle

It really was, and runs mostly on vibes

Elaine

Need the MM takes on I’m still here… part 2??

Patrick

Challengers is just so good

nick

I thought EP was terrible but at least it was terrible in service of something different and non-formulaic.

eduard karpoev

As a Russian hoping for the Anora sweep 🗿

syd

I wish we could get a longer discussion about Long Legs cause that movie pissed me off for so many different reasons

Christopher Small

My family went to see the musical Wicked one time. When someone mentioned that they thought the songs were forgettable my Mom responded: Mom: "No, c'mon there were some memorable ones. What about that one, y'know *singing to the theme of Hollywood* 🎶Popular! You're gonna be so freakin' popular!🎶"

etienne

the two best pieces of media on Brutalism are Halo: Combat Evolved [Bungie; 2001] and Control [Remedy; 2019]

etienne

rosebud is the sled

More Human than Human

“Flow” was the best movie I saw this year. Yes it is for babies. I do not care, the animation and sound design are amazing

More Human than Human

Shit sucked balls seriously. Was on par with some Shudder slop I’d stream randomly

More Human than Human

Please send an email with “5 things I got done this week” to my 17 year old assistant

Listened to this in the car on the way to see nickel boys and i'm still here back to back lmao

Sam

love chapo. cant listen to will's opinions on this shit. a complete unknown? are you kidding me?

Scott Bell

If the metaphor worked for you that's cool. I found it shallow and not particularly insightful, but that's a matter of subjective preference. Obviously, your point of view on the matter is more common

Khemith

"Substance" had enough tits and ass to keep happy.

Cole Durkee

Yeah his taste in movies feels so ironically charged.

Drew

Been dreaming for days like this

Christopher Mesler

I think the substance is maybe the worst movie I've ever seen, at least I've never seen a movie i hated as much as this one. Omg I fucking hate it.

Anya

Why?

Anya

Its def a girl movie

Anya

What do u got against vibes

Anya

This makes me feel good about my movie opinions

Derik Saari

It's very boring and Moneyball to talk about movies this way, but we basically know a lot of the winners from all the guild awards and such. It will probably be Anora and Baker for Picture/Director. Best Actor is probably the most interesting race, though.

thicchatlogan

never understood why it would matter if lynch didn't like it. like have you ever met a creative person before, plenty of them hate their old stuff

Devin

I felt the same way, in how well it captured the viciousness of that which is societal and internalized re: beauty, aging, etc. And it's not a self-serious movie: it's not trtinf to be subtle; it's an axe, presenting it to you as disgustingly and brutal as it can. More over, it's funny! The absurdity is equally the point. It's giving you this vile shit at every turn, most notably at the end when Elisasue vomits a perfectly shaped breast onto the stage. This is what the crowd wanted, right?? Why are they so disgusted??

Luke B

Low key shocked to hear Will shit on a lot of movies that I thought were very good.

Joe Mischo

Will is SO wrong about The Substance it’s offensive.

Terrance McDonald

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve noticed that people who take movies really seriously tend to not like it. But the vast majority of normal people do.

Grant Ostrander

Conclave is very much a “if Kamala had won” movie

Mark

I did not see the conclusion coming. I hadn’t heard much about it, but I was interested because Demi was getting plaudits, so I figured I’d check it out. I thought the first 2/3 was exceptional, and then it dissolves (pun not intended) into a Yuzna/Gordon thing? I was delighted! I was literally shocked. So deliciously weird. They don’t make them like that anymore.

Joe Mischo

It’s good to disagree! I’m so curious about Hesse’s flip on the film too. Hate the mindset, not the movie.

Joe Mischo

Yes!!! This is why movies exist. I hate movies that are just “conversations” 🤦🏻

Karl Hungus

Couple ideas for S3 episodes: Kubrick - Barry Lyndon and Dr Strangelove Hong Kong Action - Police Story and Hard Boiled Tarkovsky - Stalker and Solaris

Mark Cichra

Megalopolis is a movie about moviemaking where someone doesn’t get gay raped

Daniel Capshaw

The best The Substance taken came from NorthernLion: it is a movie about an old woman who is bad at taking her medicine.

etienne

extremely started watching movies 2 weeks ago opinion

Gordon Schmidt

Only listening AFTER the Oscars to see how wrong the predictions were. So happy Mikey won! Also, let's hear it for another Palme D'Or-Best Picture synchronization

Hannah Mosman

I’m just a girl who cain’t say no!

William Hubel

Sorry Will, but your opinion of Wicked is very ‘seen too many films to enjoy a good movie.’ The Hollywood musical is so back

Cristian Coriano

Will not liking other performances in the brutalist is crazy to me. Definitely brutal head and I think they didn’t want to enjoy it. Hit cliche beats? Heroine in Pennsylvania is cliche? Come on. Also I didn’t think the substance was crazy revolutionary but like man they really hate on it. I don’t think the substance is trying to be smarter than it is, people are doing that for it. Hesse and Will spent an hour praising Shivers and analyzing it which I think they had to jump through hoops to do but I feel like they don’t extend the same courtesy to most modern movies :/

Ian

Nah The Substance sucks

Arid

But the funny part was the annoying lib lost his "campaign" for pope

Ernest Ambrus

He didn’t win for sperging in Gilbert Grape?

Ernest Ambrus

Shitlib vibes when Will dismissed Longlegs.

Fernslinger

Totally agree. A Prophet is pretty much a perfect movie in my humble opinion

Fernslinger

Matt Christman was right when he said “movies, folks! They had a good run didn’t they”!

Ben Burke

Longlegs sucked dick and I'm glad to know others think so as well. Wicked was fun

Ben Burke

congrats buddy, they did it

Justin

there are lots of good ones. there are just zero great ones.

Justin

Actually, I take that back, 'Malcolm X' is phenomenal.

Justin

I have literally never heard one person say one single good thing about 'Emilia Perez.' I've never seen a movie this actively hated get this close to an Oscar. Lots of middling, "that one?" movies have won, but I can't think of any like this coming close.

Nathan Explosion

it’s for babies but third act is some intensely allegorical stuff. worthy of best animated and probably more

More Human than Human

Yes. Best movie of the year. The 3rd act bird scene, and the whale scene. Without spoiling.

Ian Moody

Hessa slandering the movie Ray by accusing it of copying Walk the Line, a movie which came out a year later.

William Evans

Wicked was fun, Dune 2 was borrrrrringggggg

steven bassett

A Different Man and No Other Land were the only good movies released in 2024

Reece Coren

Love how mad Will got at the lack of gay sex in Challengers

etienne

i feel like Timothée Chalamet and Adam Driver are fighting for the same spot and Timmy C just landed a few decisive blows over '23 and '24

Natalie

good indulgences joke will

Alexandria Rancourt

Why don’t people get that Challengers is all about edging

Keith Huston

They’re not going to do any movies people have seen lol

Jay

38:00 Did Will call her Tesla?

chowder_julius

Complaining about how movies aren’t good anymore and not seeing Nickel Boys is a big L

hamburglar

It’s that patented mennaker dry mouth

ERIC

Will, please let up on the interruptions this season. Hesse needs you to control your enthusiasm.

Texas Chainstore Manager

Love you, Will, but as a fellow ADHD-bag, I was sympathetically embarrassed. Also, your takes on Wicked were trash.

Texas Chainstore Manager

It’s the best movie all year. Maybe all time. The most insane thing I’ve ever watched.

Ernest Ambrus

A mug of diarrhea *with* Nicolas Cage

ERIC

The king didnt miss.

Luke Witherell

God, I hate how badly they misunderstand these movies. The ending of The Brutalist is deliberately ironic and anti-Zionist, and I thought that was abundantly clear. The Substance is deliberately on-the-nose, but they thought it was "trying to be smart"? I really do think they *try* to dislike some movies to be cool.

Gabe Juniper

Disagreed with most of Will’s takes on this one (especially about Challengers) but it’ll always be cathartic to hear someone hate on Wicked. Awful movie. I’m Still Here was the best film of 2024 imo. Perhaps not quite on par with Zone of Interest, but that’s a very high bar, and it came close.

Dustin Nelson

How can you hate The Substance (2024), geez. I love you guys but when you're wrong you're like, *REALLY* wrong, oof

Dustin Nelson

It did come off that way, I rarely turn chapo off for a bad take but that did it for me.

Logan Ausherman

I watched it, I thought it was quite good. Maybe a bit over the top, but still good. I have a feeling people who like shitty movies told you it was good and that colored your viewing but what do I know?

Joshua Garcia

I saw one movie the entire year. Our culture is buttrash.

Biscuit

So ‘they don’t get it it’s meant to be shitty’

Luke Witherell

Straightforward and shitty aren't the same.

K H

Don't entertain Will's old man haterism Tess.

100% with them on The Brutalist. There was a lot to love about the movie but the rape scene was such a bizarre turn to make a point I thought the movie was already making quite well. Brody didn’t deserve the Oscar since his preformance was AI assisted. I loved Challengers just as a thrilling in theater experience but agree it was semi-carried by the soundtrack and cinematography. Watched it at home later and it was fine and fun but nothing amazing. Conclave, Anora, and I’m Still Here were the best movies of the year, but none of them scratched Zone of Interest. Dune 2 was sick and proved that it’s possible to make sci-fi that isn’t slop, but Zendaya and Chalamet’s chemistry (or lack of it) was the worst part of the movie.

I NEED A LONGLEGS DEEP DIVE WITH MATT

I don’t think you guys really understood that scene in Mulholland drive… somehow I don’t think the point is that she is a great actress…

THEKILLERWHALE

I would say that a film like Birdman of Alcatraz is a film first and a biopic second. That is, there is a clear distinction between a film like Ray or Rocketman that are clearly just an excuse to make a movie about a public figure and an actual drama like Birdman of Alcatraz or Goodfellas that just happen to be films about real people. With that said, I will accept Malcom X.

It's definitely deliberately on the nose, but at what point can we just call that self-indulgence and lack of having something new to say?

Blind Steel

suggestion for a future season: "White Heat" (1949) with James Cagney. I can see W&H rocking that one

shirasagi

So here for the Challengers slander, that movie SUCKED

Chippsy McStagger

Nickle Boys ignored again. Best movie of the lot.

Challengers asks the brave question, what if country club members had emotions.

godruler

Lol whiffed on every Oscars prediction

Geez patreon keeps replaying this one where I left off during the ranting over The Substance and its such a barrage of bad takes on that film I don't trust what they have to say about the other movies in this episode. Like I know the team is smarter than this, are they just trying to be contrarian here??

Tim O'

I disagree. She gives an undeniably great performance and it does nothing to convince the industry guys to give her the part, which is important to her character arc. (IMO anyway, there's probably no wrong reading of that movie)

Tim O'

Hesse saying she liked Emilia Perez ,and Will quickly being like, "State your case 🫵🤨🎤" was very funny

Conclave is an A+ airplane seat movie
