They used a special master in the Michael Cohen case. In both cases a bunch of documents are swept up as part of the initial search. The special master reviews documents to see what's responsive to the initial search warrant, including filtering out materials from investigators that may be protected in some way. The difference in this case is that Trump is invoking "executive privilege" as grounds for filtering out some materials. Unlike Cohen, Trump and his team also waited more than a week to argue for a special master, while his team floundered around figuring out its PR and legal strategy (meaning that investigative teams have probably already reviewed a significant amount of material that they seized). Of course there's also the question of a former president potentially treating top secret documents as his personal property. Who knows where this goes, but I still think Trump is probably going to push things to such a degree that he ends up effectively prosecuting himself.

Not sure if this has been said already, but Matt's understanding of the Special Master is largely right. They are an exceptional appointment, usually a more experienced attorney or retired judge, but the appointment is common enough. A common-enough scenario where a special master gets appointed: a lawyer is accused of getting in on a fraud scheme, the feds or state police execute a search warrant on their office and seize their files. The police here can't just be permitted to read notes of conversations between the lawyers and their clients in the course of searching for the fraud evidence, so the special master is appointed to sort through the documents and make decisions about what can be seen by the prosecution and what get sealed or returned to the defendant/lawyer/ex-lawyer.

FWIW: my father was appointed special master by a federal judge in the 90s after it was discovered the public housing program in Wash DC was being looted by local officials (the mayor was giving section 8 vouchers away as Xmas presents). The judge put the program in receivership and my father's job was essentially to do the investigation/analysis of the abuses the court-appointed receiver would then use as a blueprint. He grew up in DC so he loved it, but as a white man working in an almost entirely black population, he begged them to give him any title other than "master."

I don't think I can completely agree with that even on your terms. The problem with Kiwifarms is that they were under an insane amount of pressure from DDoS attacks, and Cloudflare was basicaly the only company that was *able* to protect them and they did it for *extremely* cheap. And they decided to drop them. Cloudflare was doing them a huge solid acting as their front end for all those years. Kiwifarms managed to snap the elastic band of freedom of speech online at every step of the way and they found themselves completely alone save for one company that didn't even know what they were. And then they heard. like if they have a specific message they need to put out, there's nothing stopping them from doing that using just about any other method besides, being a convenient free web board protected for free by a third party
