One of the main "deep" causes for Americans' unusually terrible diets was a reconfiguration of agricultural policy in the 1970s to intentionally use state subsidized, cheap, overly-industrialized food to suppress wages. This has created a system of incentives that can only be fixed by re-valuing food and agriculture, and making food and wages more expensive. There is almost no political constituency for this in the US, partly because the over-industrialization of food means food producers are a tiny share of the electorate. The problem can be fixed, but not in a way any viable coalition of voters wants. It will make American life more expensive and less convenient.

Cuban-style salsa (casino rueda) is danced in a circle and you're constantly switching partners so the stakes are very low and if you end up liking it, it's a ready-made social circle always looking for new ppl. (Often their events are free or like $5 and include lessons.) I'm not saying learn to dance in order to get laid but if you want to combine physicality, socializing, and you like good music and fun it is praxxxxis, and definitely also one weird trick to get laid.

If you're a terminally-lonely sadbrained type, chances are you've already sought out and heard all of the advice on offer - eat well, dress good, do things with people etc. all of which are good and the right things to do. However another big part of the equation imo is finding the mental strength to both start doing these things and persisting in them, ideally with a supportive group of actual friends to fall back on for encouragement and advice. Past a certain point hearing the oft-repeated bromides doesn't offer anything new and just becomes frustrating, especially if the desired "results" don't appear to be manifesting. If this sounds sad and bootstrappy that's because it is, I don't have any master strategies for finding and making friends myself so if anybody has some that would be nice. tia

I know the term “mindfulness” makes the boys’ eyeballs roll all the way back, and I get why…the Silicon Valley schmucks trying to increase productivity and hucksters mindlessly throwing it out as a buzzword. That being said, Buddhism and its associated concepts (especially mindfulness) can absolutely help the ennui, loneliness, and helplessness. Individual experiences differ wildly. People love to shit on dating apps, but tbh, they can be great. As Will said…you gotta learn to take rejection in stride and acknowledge that it’s not the end of the world. You may have a string of really awkward and disappointing dates, yes. I sure have.
