James Cameron is Daniel Plainview, but he possess, you know, a soul.

Roth is a first ballot hall of famer guest

SCB

Hell yeah, a proper Chapo. I was afraid our slop cups would be filled with some scripted, thematic episode.

What social media networks you're on is, of course, entirely your own business. But it would be nice to see a clearer understanding of the political economy at play. Mastodon and Hive aren't equivalents: Mastodon represents something quite different and is the product of a lot of very difficult activism and hard work by the left wing of tech workers. It's roughly equivalent to a housing co-op whereas Hive is just a building with a different landlord. I'm concerned that this isn't more widely understood on the left. It's perhaps a failing of those of us in tech to explain it well. Everyone's bored shitless of hearing from us nerds anyway. But it would be cool if you had a guest on some time to talk about the political economy of technology.

Bill

Love the Cameron talk. In my opinion the Avatar episode of Chapo may be the best one. I still re-listen to it sometimes.

greybuscat

I'm sure that attitude engenders a lot of support for your various causes.

Jeffrey Miller

That's interesting and I might read about it, but I think people will just go to the platform that is the easiest to use and has the most "people of note".

Jeffrey Miller

Roth saying that seeing a person of Cameron's stature having insight is "like watching a dog dunk a basketball" was such a dumb joke but it got me good.

McNuggie

Wow I need to eat that delicious food

William

Dude don't cry if someone doesn't agree with you. It's embarrassing. Listen to another podcast if you want that analysis there's plenty out there with "experts" on them

Alistair Davidson

These technologies play an absolutely central role in our economy, our politics, and our day-to-day lives. How they are structured and how they are owned has a huge impact on our society. We've seen social media play a dramatic role in the rise and fall of social movements. Tweaks to social media algorithms can encourage or discourage fascism, we've all seen this happen in real time. We know that bans on individuals and forums have a dramatic effect on the growth of fascism and fascist ideas. We know that social media can even inspire terrorism and genocides. Dunno about where you all are, but here a really nasty LGBT movement was built online, and Musk's been unbanning some of the worst instigators and promulgators of it. That will likely kill. These businesses have also been the leading edge of capitalism for well over a decade. A huge amount of production and consumption takes place there. Whether that production and consumption is democratic and socialised, or capitalist and commodified, is a massive question. When the firms at the leading edge of capitalism are also some of the biggest media environments with a dramatic impact on our politics, yes that shit matters! Deleted the saltier comment, it wasn't needed, fair enough.

I rarely laugh out loud listening to podcasts of any description, and that genuinely made me giggle like a toddler for a solid 20-30 seconds uninterrupted.

Jeffrey Miller

If Chapo wanted another permanent host, he'd be the top pick by a mile. He really gels with the guys and his experience as a writer has offered interesting insights from time to time.

Hamburgler

Folks. We love Roth folks.

DJ

Shit on Nick all you want but this man is banned from every platform, banned from certain banks, and banned from places irl. Yet he's working with ye and a previous president. For some reason this guy will not go away and it's worth taking somewhat seriously at least.

THEKILLERWHALE

Power rankings 1. Roth 2. Katherine (a gf this high on the list is a damn miracle) 3. Pareene 4. Rogan Get it done Chapo!

eijy

The segment on James Cameron, the second coming of Napoleon Bonaparte, was delightful

Axel

Y'all know that Iran will potentially kick out 🇺🇸 from world cup

THEKILLERWHALE

Will, we hate those old bats in France too. You may argue that we are overly permissive towards battleaxes, but you cannot claim that we do not hate them.

Zen Ben

The celebration of a real genius like James Cameron is a tonic for the toxic celebrity culture worship of bloodless mutant freaks and jumped up cranks like Elon Musk and Kanye West. James Cameron is the true avatar of our time.

Zen Ben

I pray daily that the next three years of the roll-out of the Avatar cinematic dynastic series will ignite an awakening of the human spirit in the 21st century, after a pandemic pause for reflection, that will inspire a phase leap of global consciousness to the next electron shell of collective human potential. This global re-enchantment of the world will vindicate the art of cinema as the apex transformational medium.

aarinsanity

Im so frustrated with the Musk Twitter takeover. Twitter went from cesspool to worse.

Doug Cartel

yeah, I'll give Fuentes credit, he doesn't do the coy decoder ring bullshit that his idiot fans do all the time. "yeah, I love Lord of the Rings and the year I was born. That's why I'm WhiteWhizard1477! Nobody will ever know!"

Doug Cartel

The more you describe the guts of Mar a Lago the more it sounds like an un-ending Tom Goes To The Mayor skit.

Wrong

Anyone else having trouble with feed sinking with apple podcast?

Derwood

God damn Roth is good

Poppy Chulo

I just use patreon honestly. Its best to avoid apple when you can. lol jk I don't know.

Adam

Oh we loveeee David Roth don't we folks

boxcar

It could be it will be revealed (in this case) Elon was a messianic figure come to sacrifice his wealth in order to destroy twitter. Thereby washing clean a den of abomination. I personally dislike Elon, but sometimes he does accomplish good things.

Jö

Loud absence of the song “Jump”

Poppy Chulo

David Roth should be part of Chapo. Just give him Felix chair.

Garth Hillsborough

Love a shout-out to the eminently-watchable 'Ice Station Zebra' from 1968 in this episode. Starring Patrick McGoohan and Ernest Borgnine!

Dom

Man chapo is fallen off. Pushing monarchism and willing to bend the knee to a Canadian? Gross

Andrew Cross

“shit on Nick all you want” didn’t need ur permission brother

Alex

USA won 0-0. Episode is ruined

DJT

cameron is such a pimp lol

Marcel Szabo

Roth needs a permanent seat.

Jon

Roth is as interesting as any of the Chapos, but whenever I see the name of his website, all I see is Defecator Media. Real chink in the armor there…

Epicfetus

great episode. happy european colonialism day gents

Savannakhet

Mushy Peas are actually really good, especially with a fishcake and some chips.

etienne

now *that's* shitposting

Joe Warren

I hope chapo gets Yves Smith on. Would be a great guest!

(Noah J)

some of the greatest troll art out there on cameron lol. bravo.

Emily Richardson

Chapo’s obsession with James Cameron is my fav thing about this podcast.

Of course

When Chapo does a Cameron appreciation, I call around to my friends and ask them, "Did you see Avatar, what did you think?" And I get "Boring, too long, don't remember it, wait, the blue people? He's no Steven Spielberg." I just remember being distracted, then mesmerized, by the tiny exit sign to the left of the giant screen after a couple of hours. The original Chapo take about Cameron tricking America into giving a standing o to an alien Viet Cong... that made some sense, even with all the Pocahontas criticisms from others. But everything else, like Cameron's technical skill and boundless confidence, is meh. But again, love Chapo... they watch and review the movies I'll never see. And give solid dental appraisals of nazis. Indispensable.

Of course

That was the original Chapo hope, Cameron as Moses, a "voice in the wilderness"... but now it's: Cameron is a singular genius and generalissimo world-builder who could be our Napoleon, or Gaddafi.

Where No One Goes

New to the pod (and somewhat new to the internet...I'm like 40 and spent a large portion of the last 20 years being quite offline after nope-ing out due to an overabundance of fascists and misogyny in early days of message boards). When you started in on Cameron, I was girding myself for another tired 'Dances with SMURFS!' retort. What I got instead was so refreshing. I endured daily anti-Avatar spiels back in 2009 at my job (full of those fast-talkers that dimwitted people refer to as ‘clever’ but who really just parrot back the stuff they hear or read and lack a single original thought in their head). I was smiling ear-to-ear the end of this pod because I’ve never heard anyone not be an irritating little shit about Avatar. Caveat: Avatar is a good movie, but not my fav (from Cameron that has to be The Abyss). But what so impressive is his singular, focused vision; he doesn’t cut corners, he doesn’t bend to any will that does not serve the vision, and he never rushes out sub-par shit. He deserves every single benefit of the doubt you can muster. There are few filmmakers out there that can claim this, and none that have raptured the public’s consciousness the way he does. Also, love you guys. Not a new take here, certainly just a drop in the bucket, but you’re my favourite podcast now…I wish I was able to contemporaneously experience the hundreds of episodes prior to this summer when I started.

David

The James Cameron thing is fuckin lame and you fawning over one rich asshole over another rich asshole because one made an overrated movie you like is gross and you sound like bitches

Chantz

I am never more patriotic than when the British "people" enter the equation

Liam

if they ever want a fourth mic again and he'd be down, they really should consider Roth. genuinely their best guest and is in tune with the chapo mindset

C. Ries

Like, this Roth guy is like, y’know, like— super like cringe and gay. Like.

MEAT CLOWN

The titles always add a lot more to my enjoyment of the episodes then they probably should. I've been laughing to myself about "Scran report: turkey barm" for days

Null_null

Roth is a national treasure and a brilliant writer. I’m sorry he stammers. He’s like 50 or some shit, though, so I doubt it’s some kind of affect.

J.P. McD.

Peter Chung the creator of Aeon Flux was once invited to the Kanye hangar to discuss a project. In another world we’d have Kanye Presidential run cartoon commercials with groypers in the style of Aeon Flux.

C. Ries

Aeon Flux is too horny for them, they’re all asexual Catholic psychos

J.P. McD.

This is such lame 2020 twitter “I’m lefter than you are” twaddle

C. Ries

Spielberg is the king of American middlebrow. Cameron is an auteur.

C. Ries

That’s not what a stammer is are you really going to use the Brandon excuse

James Lavin

Imagine being British. lol

etienne

behaviour befitting of an evil elementary school english teacher in a coming of age movie. you will find another place to lecture people about proper syntax and vocabulary

Jon

Bosses who know everything about every step in a process can be good… They can also be horrible micromanagers. From the sound of it, Cameron is the latter

Greg Spicer

whoever told you about adding pea juice to a sandwich is pulling your leg. Have never heard of this in all my life. That's not to say we don't like disgusting food in the UK but not this.

bruce

One rich asshole is actually capable of administrating and producing Anything of material or cultural value, while the other one is actively dismantling a website I like using. Fuck off

Justin

Roth is so fucking good. I know he has his own gig, but man I'd love him as regular. He really vibes with the gang.

Mark Schneider

On first reading your post I saw "Elon was a messianic figure come to sacrifice his meth . . ." No commentary pro or anti your point but I think that reads better

Mark Schneider

Looked up pics of Rebecca Grossman and her elf-like (no surprise he's in plastic surgery) hubby, then pics of the guy she was racing 80 mph to fuck . . . I get it!! A soulless blonde, not really even that attractive but thinks she's all that due to the big bucks, glad she's plastering herself all over the media to whip up the schadenfreude in plebs like Me!

Camille Shultz

You know what child-killer Rebecca Grossman didn’t have? Empathy and a driver

Fat_H

I know exactly when this was recorded and I don't like it

Liam

There isn’t some limit on Jews per podcast we can have both of them

Liam

When he described trump’s cubic shits like a wombat it made me cackle so hard I nearly crashed my car
