Martin Ross

I’m just saying it- James Adomian just needs to be on more. Every podcast is better when he is involved.

Katherine Moss

Jeez. It keeps getting me. Sounds too much like him. I’ve never heard someone do him this well.

Major bit me

We need a Giver from The Giver. Someone who will absorb all deleted memories, emails, photos, and posts. If we ever want to know what we were up to at a certain point in time, we can just ask The Giver, but he will be the only one who ever knows, and all the other bullshit from the past can be cooly forgotten

Sam

I feel like "can AI make art" is not the question we should be focusing on when we are living at a time where the question 'what art is' is unanswerable in a way that can satisfy everyone. But it is tragic to see the AI exploiting so many artists while a bunch of internet bros salivate over the fantasy of finally not having to pay a liveable fee to artists for their commisions. BY MAKING IMAGES IN AI, WHICH WAS FED BY THOSE VERY ARTISTS!

Bobby Volcano

Quick tip, the photos of your newborn child should be backed up by printing them on paper with pigment (not ink). Also get a NAS. This little box lives in your house and safeguards all your files and does not have a subscription. It's like running your own Dropbox but without Condoleeza Rice having access to your nudes.

Quinn Johnson

That thing about ai music isn’t true. That shit has never been convincing.

It is no different than mechanization used to replace labor that was exploited over centuries for the excess capital needed to fund the research, engineering, and iterative improvements needed to build working machines. We are in every way the seed of our own destruction, not sprouting but bursting into flames.

Oh hiii Claire

The only 'Rittenhouse unboxing' I want to see is where his casket is dug up and his decaying corpse pissed upon by the community.

A bit surprised that there was no mention of Reddit in all of this. As we get further reduced to numbers I think Reddit is the perfect depersonalizing platform to allow us to ratchet up our crazy tendencies in siloed communities.

I got the AI bot the write the article you suggest at then end. Prompt: Write an Atlantic article by the most pretentious cocksucker on the planet about his email account. Response: As I sit here in my plush mahogany study, sipping on my single-malt scotch and staring out at the rolling hills of my sprawling estate, I can't help but think about the sheer superiority of my email account. You see, dear reader, I am not just any ordinary plebeian with a run-of-the-mill Gmail or Yahoo account. Oh no, I am a man of refined tastes and unparalleled sophistication, and as such, I have a highly exclusive and elite email account that is the envy of all who know of its existence. But what sets my email account apart from the masses, you might ask? Well, for starters, it is not accessible by just anyone. In fact, only a select few privileged individuals are even aware of its existence, let alone have the means to access it. This, my friends, is the domain of the crème de la crème, the elite of the elite, the 1% of the 1%. And I, dear reader, am proud to say that I am a member of this exclusive club. But what does my email account offer that others do not, you might inquire further. Well, let me tell you. First and foremost, my email account is equipped with the most advanced and sophisticated encryption technology available. This ensures that my communications are kept completely private and secure from the prying eyes of hackers and other nefarious individuals. In addition to this, my email account also offers a host of luxurious features and amenities that are simply not available on ordinary email platforms. For example, I have a personal concierge service at my disposal 24/7, ready to fulfill any request I might have, no matter how outlandish or extravagant it may seem. But perhaps most impressive of all is the sheer exclusivity of my email account. As I mentioned earlier, only a select few are even aware of its existence, and even fewer have the privilege of accessing it. This exclusivity gives me a sense of superiority and entitlement that is simply unmatched by any other email platform on the market. So, dear reader, as you sit there scrolling through your mundane and pedestrian email account, take solace in the fact that there exists a world of luxury and exclusivity that you can only dream of. And, as for me, I will continue to bask in the superiority of my elite email account, sipping my scotch and gazing out at my magnificent estate. Long live the 1% of the 1%.

Alexandr

He's a cunt. CHATTERTON is an absolute fucking piece of shit and Bari Weiss friend. Which says a lot about his value to society that he would be her friend or rhetorically defend her.

Alexandr

I liked it a lot.

Alexandr

Hahaha. "Pretentious cocksucker" is easily one of the only ways to describe CHATTERTON. The other being 'the dipshit who's friends with Bari Weiss whose name sounds like an undead skellington gorilla.'

C. Ries

“Jewish Jurisprudence”

C. Ries

I don’t understand why the chapos are in denial that ai is and will come for every productive or creative human endeavor. It’s only a matter of time. You need to make sure that leads to a world that’s better and not worse, but there’s no choice about whether ai and automation continue to accelerate.

Colin Helpio

God-level impression of Elon

William

Jfc people like you are so tedious. Yeah, okay, cool, what the fuck are any of US going to do about that? Unless you're sitting on a pile of VC cash like a fucking dragon you're not going to have any say in this "conversation". Oh sorry, should they "take it more seriously"? Why? What the fuck would that materially change?

Damen Irving

I agree. AI won’t even have to be that good to replace graphic designers—even for organizations that have the resources to have entire staff of creatives.

William

Who cares

NYCM&AHole

He knew Daria? Did he know Jane?

D.O.D

I'm sure he's a piece of shit, idk, I don't keep a mental rolodex of all these losers. I don't really remember who Bari Weiss is either. But the reading series did not convince me that this was anything more than a mildly pointless article. Which maybe is the point? Idk

Damen Irving

You usually have to give a shit about something before you do anything about it, man.

Ryan Johnson

Quoting Anil Dash, saying Twitter was just removing revenge porn, and still using Tumblr?

Elliot Matheny

19:45 for an all time great Freudian slip from Will. When discussing the legality of Kanye posting a swastika to his Twitter, he says “that is not an incitement to violence, as far as US Jewish Jurisprudence has established.” Very memorable stuff.

Sam

It is very upsetting to see, and most artists are not consenting to nor even aware of their art being stolen to feed these AIs.

BigBoto

Chatterton is his middle name, and yes, his dad named him after the English poet who necked himself at the age of 17. I know this because I hate him.

Clean Shirt Piggie

Email and Twitter are kind of the life blood of CTH right?

etienne

mfs who whine the hardest about how AI is gonna end art and civilization as we know it are always the first to spam the tl with endless low effort posts of their cat getting anime-ified by a neural net toy program

C. Ries

It’s not a General AI of course a la the “singularity” (which may not be even possible and might never happen) but that’s exactly my point. Even mundane neural networks which are just glorified algorithms are very quickly going to be able to do specialized tasks as well as humans.

Will

From open Ai Chat bot: Prompt: Write the transcript of an episode of Chapo Trap house in which the boys (will, Matt, and Felix) interview Henry Kissinger about his role in American foreign policy. They are critical of his contributions on the grounds that he has contributed to human suffering. Response: Will: Welcome to Chapo Trap House, Henry Kissinger. It's an honor to have you on the show. Henry Kissinger: Thank you. It's a pleasure to be here. Matt: Dr. Kissinger, you've had a long and storied career in American foreign policy. But we have to ask, how do you justify your actions, given the human suffering that they have caused? Kissinger: Well, Matt, I don't think it's fair to say that my actions have caused human suffering. I believe that I have acted in the best interests of the United States and its people. Felix: But what about your role in the bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War? That led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians. Kissinger: The bombing of Cambodia was a difficult decision, but it was necessary for the broader goal of ending the Vietnam War. Will: And what about your involvement in the coup that overthrew Salvador Allende in Chile, leading to the brutal dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet? Kissinger: Again, I believe that my actions were in the best interests of the United States at the time. Matt: But what about the human cost? Kissinger: As I said, I believe that my actions were necessary for the broader goals of American foreign policy. Felix: But at what point do those goals become morally reprehensible? Kissinger: I understand your concerns, but I stand by my decisions. Will: Well, Dr. Kissinger, we may have to agree to disagree. Thank you for joining us on Chapo Trap House. Kissinger: Thank you. It was a pleasure to be here.

Continues to be very funny to me how much Twitter matters to the very people who decry its meaninglessness and pretend to hate it.

NumbersGoUp

I think it's wrong to think of AI accomplishing anything other then just being better at what it's already doing. The whole reason I moved away from AI was because investors weren't willing to try any applications, because it's accuracy is just not that good when moving away from anything other than text and image generation. When dealing with real world issues, there are too many dimensions for modern AI to come remotely close to the accuracy of humans. It's basically just fancy regression functions, and I personally don't believe there will be any meaningful applications unless there's some major unpredictable breakthrough like the discovery of neural networks in the first place. (Which btw, happened 50 years ago). The only reason it's suddenly improving in the last decade is because processing power is cheap enough to build these 50 year old designs. We can tweak it to get minor improvements. But we've pretty much seen what neural networks are capable of... It's not magic, it's just statistics. Any problem that can't be approximated with statistics, can't be solved with "AI"

Saga

At this point it doesn't matter if it's a Twitter alternative or an Elon-free Twitter, both solutions address the symptom and not the cause. Until we have a regulated open source or public option we're going to run into the same problem every 5 years or so.

Jonathan G

ok. what's this mean for us

Michael

Before they even know what they had with AI, they patented it, they packaged it, they slapped a nice label on it and now they’re selling it, they’ve selling it.

Brendan A. MacWade

Mastodon, britches. Diss it at your own fucking peril. You're just too much of a pussy to leave your loser followers at Twitter behind.

Ricky

nobody’s on mastodon Brenda

Ricky

sounds very funny. I don’t know anyone like that though

Do Golems Dream of Ceramic Sheep

No meaningful applications, but boy are a lot of ignorant wankers gonna tell you that AI is going to solve problem X so much better than answering the question of how that problem got there in the first place. E.g., try talking to a Musketeer about bus lanes.

Dan

All of Matt’s takes are AI generated

Dan

My guess is that this dude looked at all his emails and g-chat messages and absolutely hated everything he read some it and just deleted it all so that he could remain in love with himself. Like AI, lot of what he does is the half baked product of mental masturbation.

2026-09-09 10:00 Crazy how much shit they talk on Mastodon for 3 episodes straight. It's a federated open source system. It's literally a leftist power structure to replace a failing hierarchical corporation. It's a good reminder that this is very much a reactionary leftist podcast. It's very revealing in that sense.

Standing ovation for James Adomian! My ribs hurt...

james

Something is telling me that this Roderick character is no good

Saga

I'll rephrase - until we have an open source option that's actually feasible as an alternative. I feel like Mastodon isn't liked by enough Twitter users to make the switch. That said, maybe the thing that makes twitter appealing is the same thing that makes it a dumpster fire, and you can't have one without the other?

Peace Picnic

You lose me when you start making fun of people on Twitter promoting Assange or their art or self employment. WTF is wrong with that? Do you want to see only Raytheon ads on Twitter? If your humor has to be at someone else's expense, there are plenty of Elons in the world to make fun of. Punch up.

Dyyyyylan

Chalking the Hunter Biden-Twitter thing up as revenge porn feels lazy and misleading. Obviously the thing that matters is blocking links to a political news story (including in DMs).

Laurel

10/10 Elon interview. Bravo, Chapos!

Minnesota_Cold

Eh. Maybe limit Twitter talk to like, less than 80% of the episode? Idk

my friends girlfriends is fully kanye and terfed pilled basically overnight. extremely depressing, i tried to cut them off months ago because of other dogshit views. they know my mom. the gf was sending me black Israelite videos "trying to give me more perspectives". Got in a big text argument and blocked her. What the fuck is happening. She wasn't always like that.

etienne

kinda funny to hear the guys circle the point for a half hour before just lightly approaching it: twitter is text, tumblr is text, all the other ones are not text. the problem with twitter dying, is that twitter is the last one standing that is fundamentally text. you can't do business communiqués on a non-text medium, and you can't do a cogent, debatable political take on a non-text medium.

etienne

also this dumb motherfucker complaining about getting 15 years of excellent email service for free and then losing it because he can't even find-select-delete some of the spam he got over that time span. mother fucker if you are incredibly too stupid to have basic technological litteracy you can not complain about getting billed a token amount for 15 years of free samples. This is the computer equivalent of complaining that you have too many credit card bills piled up in your living room because you are unable to untangle them from your personal correspondance and photo archive.

When I was in my early teens, I ran an RP on a small-ish gaming forum called Chaos Wars. It was about a group of mods fighting for order on a forum long abandoned by the admins against trolls, bots, and the dreaded trots. It was by far the thread with the most replies to it on the site. I guess what I’m getting at is that’s it weird that Elon Musk has the same perception of a website as that of a 14 year-old.

J P 3

Mastodon sounds more like a federation of blogs from the early 2000s. Who owns the servers? Who sets the rules for each server? What is to prevent someone from monetizing an "instance" in the future? The simple fact that you need to own a computer and have access to the internet and have time to spend on the internet puts it more into the category of another form of "entertainment". A lot of the talk about Mastodon is a bit like the techno-utopianism of the early internet before people found ways to monetize it. Same was true of the early blogosphere. One potential "leftish" approach would be to take something like Twitter and turn it into more of a public utility or a public trust. However, an actual leftist power structure is still likely to be found somewhere other than virtual space.

Andrew M

so people are designing AI to draw and post instead of clean my apartment or rub my back. people are designing posters. thiss sucks lol

kelsey

Signal has created stories. It's well primed to become a social media app

THEKILLERWHALE

This is the correct take about AI. I have moved away from it as well simply because it is boring.

THEKILLERWHALE

Yeah, this is right on. We were all there. We all know the content was being blocked. And it was clearly because everyone was just so god damn exhausted with the Trump thing. So I get it but I do not like it. Do not tell me it reduces to revenge porn. That is a total mischaracterization of the events. And I still have not seen the one where he has m&ms on his dick.

THEKILLERWHALE

I thought is was a bit lame but not reading series lame.

drewb

Nah, for the sheer volume of monetisable behavioural & analytics data that Google/Alphabet has hoarded over the last two decades they should be furnishing us all with gratis terabyte inboxes

drewb

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Mastodon, is in fact, GNU/Mastodon

etienne

bzzt wrong, they shouldn't do that

drewb

Yes they should, Larry and Sergey are rich enough already

George Lochinski

I do think nfnkalyan on instagram is doing potentially worthwhile things w generative AI in art

etienne

I notice a lot of that logic, I'm gonna call it the Freerider's Two-Step: industrialists get rich by doing something evil, so logically I should get what their corporations produce for cheaper/free. You're falling victim to early online libertarian propaganda. There have always been around 4 or 5 corporations that just create and operate the internet wholesale, and yet some credible dupes have propagated the completely false idea that the network is a digital commons and a public plaza. It's not. It's never been, unless you perform some top to bottom nationalization of big chunks of the backbone, a comprehensive national home broadband, and branches of the executive that basically take over the duties of gmail, facebook, stackoverflow, and a couple other megawebsites. the monetization model of the public web has been fucked from day 1 and saying you should get free shit backed by targeted ad revenue isn't gonna fix it

Doug Cartel

there was that football (european) team where the manager or someone faked a terrorist attack on the tour bus to try to collect insurance? details are hazy but the point is that balenciaga stuff sounds pretty plausible given how many stupid ideas become reality already

Doug Cartel

there was that one microsoft AI that started like "hi im a teenage girl talk to me!" and in less than an hour it was screaming slurs because 4chan found it- that's pretty much the inevitable for any AI that has no limitations because "free speetch hurr"

I'd appreciate less Twitter News. Twitter doesnt represent the world or society. Not even a little bit. What does or doesn't happen on Twitter isn't important. Terminally online internet people (especially terminally online left wing internet people) give too much of a shit about the argument website imo

id appreciate if the next 3 episodes are dedicated exclusively to twitter and twitter arguments

Lmao @ Matt's disgusted "ugh, yeah" when Matt Taibbi's name comes up

Rxk Lenderman

this is literally a podcast of guys who self-admit to being twitter weirdos who are pretty honest about how warped their perspective is

Rxk Lenderman

People talking about Mastadon reminds me of like 1890s utopian writing. If you want a real non-heirarchal leftist social space go make dinner with a friend

Greasy_Jones

there was a judge dredd story about AI only being able to copy artistic output, of course the guy that had his work stolen got angry and ended up being arrested

Dick Wolf

I’ve been using smaller AI music production tools for a couple of years now and I’ve recently started to fuck around with the generative stuff (mostly looking for ideas of new routes to take songs in, it occasionally spits out something that inspires further writing) and while fun, I just don’t see how it can ever take over human production. Frankly it sounds weird and soulless and I just don’t see how it won’t need a steady hand guiding it to produce music as well as an actual artist (that Never Gonna Give You Up outro is all the proof you need.) IMO it’s another in a long line of wet/fever dreams our STEM Overlords push because it makes them think they live in Idoru. With visual arts and per the listener question about the importance of liberal arts recently: the Silicon Valley freaks can’t understand art outside of it’s speculative value. So, like every other aspect of their businesses, they are trying to hack away at labor costs associated with the paintings they launder money through. Everything I’ve seen from AI visuals, while increasingly more impressive in their fidelity and accuracy, is pretty bland at the end of the day. Like we’ve already seen with NFT’s, maybe it will take over auction houses, but I just don’t believe it will ever have mass appeal. Could be wrong but if this podcast has taught me one thing it’s that 99% of what tech people say is bullshit.

Turducken

The exclusive interview with Sir Elon Musk has justified me re-starting my subscription. So funny !

Don't know why y'all won't try Mastodon. The best thing about is when you can't sleep at night, you get to see a bunch of damned Germans chattering away. C'mon guys!

Jason Nuclear

Is it just me or does it feel like Felix, and especially Matt, have just checked out lately? I can count the number of times either one of them chimed in this episode on one hand

Dustin Nelson

Y'know I think that last article does have good points about how much online communication and services have become overwhelming as we sign onto more things and live hundreds of miles from the friends we've made. I related to a lot of what was being described minus the goofiest stuff

etienne

I don't know if it's just cope on my part but his article series The Lawyers Who Ate California was pretty good to me? I'm trying to hold onto this position that he might suck really hard overall but his business reporting is still good

Hector Jaime

I’m surprised they didn’t mention that friend of the show Bari Weiss teamed up with Taibbi on the Twitter thing.

This guys account of his loss of gmail sounds like the epiphany and orgasm of a porn addict when they finally bust from the spank bank

Valerie

Episode 194's Elon call-in skit was what got me into listening to Chapo, so happy to see it come full circle.

Alal Alal

The Elon segment was fantastic. But I'm disappointed in the crew's generic assessment of laptop contents. No mention of "10 for the big guy" i.e. his dad? Google that one.. or Burisma for that matter. There was a lot more than just "dick pics" that twitter removed (and suspended people for), and now that we know the FBI was able to curate twitter, why are you assuming that those deletions were only well-intentioned? That's naive

Jorge Enesto

yeah that was pretty asinine. i dunno why they went that direction
