What If Stanley Kubrich directed his Napoleon movie? I think about that a lot.

brodie

Can't wait for the what if Santa was a real guy hinge points episode.

JV

This mfer said hing points

T

Frost, Amber

Kyle Cassidy

There's a question about that in one of the Age of Napoleon patreon mailbag eps.

Gothnik

More like cringe points amirite.

Marcus Wrightus

Highly recommend the Black Jacobins by CLR James, for a deep explanation on the Haitian Revolution and the relationship it had with the French Revolution.

Blaz Kelbl

Age of Napoleon is close to best podcast

NYCM&AHole

What if dummy Bessner wasn’t a Dc stooge?

Michael Ehrenreich

Really curious about the “what if Napoleon doesn’t invade Russia” question, the “don’t shoot yourself in the foot for no reason” one

Brandon Wimer

I like the original theme better. I thought the new theme was going to only be on EP 1.

SCB

Cool dawg but where's the Chapo episode

AbeLinkin

What if Jesus was gay?

Mark Schneider

Much as I've enjoyed past episodes, the first one offered, neo-Emperor Napoleon allying with black slave interests & L'Ouverture is so absurd I can't entertain it seriously.

Kamran Husain

it’s pronounced two-saint if ur american

buttface

What if podcast

Antipaganda

Hey, if you're curious about what would have happened if Napoleon took Britain... Charlie Stross wrote a book series about it. Part of his Family Trade series, starting at the fourth book.

Steve D

You mean like an actual guy?

brodie

Yeah like he actually delivers presents and stuff

calvin kilby

Hell yeah brother, hi gpoints.

J.P. McD.

Is Napoleon: A Life the best book for the topic? That’s what openai chatbot told me

etienne

really enjoying this Hinge Point thing where a time traveler moves a rock in 1500AD and the present day instantly becomes French and Communist

David Lee

I love the intro to Hinge Points!

Greg

I thought episodes about "what if the geography was radically different" to be less interesting. At least I can imagine Napoleon sending that letter.

Robert

what if Santa was a real guy but he didn't deliver presents. what if he was just a selfish asshole and kept all the presents for himself.

William

It is 300 bc or some shit. King Nebuchadnezzar sneezes not once, but twice. This causes Jesus to become Lenin two thousand years early and start a revolution in 33AD

etienne

yeah all of this but somehow Vercingétorix is involved

brodie

That's one of this points that our hinges turn upon

Dick Wolf

The collab of the millennium

Patrick Banks

Napoleon sending that letter got me thinking — what becomes of the Lakota and Comanche horse empires in a timeline without an industrialized Anglo setter colonial empire on deck to steamroll them later on that century?

Post Void

Correct me if I'm wrong (really do), but I've heard before that a large amount of French nobles fled to the Antebellum South for obvious reasons, almost the same way you were posing how the nobles would flee a French invaded Britain. Well if there was a Haitian/French alliance, just as the Haitians wanted to free the Slave Markets of West Africa, France might view an invasion of the Southern US in a very similar light. Just a take.

Ben

Omg peak

Post Void

Washington DC paying tribute like Eastern Rome was paying to the Huns.

dog stone

“a laugher as they say in british soccer” this has never been said in britain… a howler perhaps?

Jay

“The man who arguably did the most for the cause of slavery in modern times, Napoleon Bonaparte…” What a sweeping statement in the closer!

KatrinaJadeHelm

Very, very hard to imagine a podcast ep being better than this. Bravo

Sezme

Very cool. Could do so many Napoleon what ifs. What if Napoleon instead of escaping to France he took his army and joined it with Murats army in Naples

Kyle Petty

Nice I'm thrilled that they actually made this episode. Couldn't have a better guest appearance than by the Napoleon connoisseur himself. I've heard Matt mentioned this hypothetical a couple times on his various other works, Great to see them play it through.

Kyle Petty

I don't know enough about it to say what is/isn't possible but they mentioned that Napoleon had literally written the letter of an alliance and just didn't send it. I trust that Everett is on the extreme higher end of familiarity with Napoleon and he mentioned on this EP that Napoleon sending the letter was the most likely of the "what-ifs." On Hell of Presidents, Matt mentioned that while Napoleon was in exile, after being defeated, that not making this alliance was his largest mistake. I would think that if someone is still reflecting on a moment years later and regrets not doing that decision, it means that decision was something they wrestled with at the time.

Kyle Petty

I mean sure there's some truth to what you're saying, But that's where we have to be responsible for what we are consuming and knowing the lens that the source is operating from. The fact is that these guys are Marxists, so of course they're going to frame this exercise in a way that asks, "how could this world have gotten to a better outcome for the left then what we got?"I've heard them mention on the pod that they legitimately believe this is one of the worst timelines and things could have gone much better so maybe that's one reason why they're going through all these hinge points, as a way to say, "See if any of these one things had happened and we would be in a better situation." I've heard Matt view Marx literally as a Jesus Christ figure, with the first half of the 20th century being the failed grasping of Marx's prediction of a proletariat revolution So yeah I think they are going to ask themselves how that could have been changed

Jim E

Does Napoleon IV still get got by Zulus somehow if Napoleon I becomes emperor of Egypt?
