How many pussies had to get popped to make this ep? The count is immeasurable

I just finished the 30 years war by Westwood. I wish I had a little more time to get through some more of the books.

Stephen David Miller

Not sure the Chapo guys have ever been more wrong about anything than their belief that a sequel to The Souvenir is a “girlfriend movie”.

Martin Kasey

But Blowback has evocative sound design and editing

Des Mosome

Folks. The Avatar, too. All of them. Not as good as the original. Seen FernGully. It’s the original. Beautiful. Ways of water. The wettest in terms of water. Beautiful boats. But not hot. No drip. Hell or high water. It’s a movie. It’s the hottest and the wettest. Can you believe it, folks. Huge.

Yarblockos

Eagerly awaiting Ken Burns "The Beer Summit"

Colin Helpio

Kinda gross to mock the intersectionality of chinos tbh

Jason Weiser

The lasers they used for the fusion reactor are 1% efficient and the steam process to convert heat to electricity is 40% efficient so they need to bump that 1:1.25 yield they got like 300x more.

Jacob Dysart

Articles of interest is good 👍

LEAH NELSON

How do you guys not like The Revenant I had a blast when I watched it drunk

Seph

Hey now- I like the occasional background sound put in for on-topic discussion. Let my boy Chris cook.

Trauma from watching hours of beheading videos? Felix is doing just fine.

Michael S. Judge

Articles of Interest is the perfect show for Felix. He loves articles, and now he only gets the interesting ones

Kyle Wolter

Very much enjoyed Neptune Frost, best pick of all the movies mentioned here in my opinion

Malf Val

Appreciate the outro. RIP Angelo Badalamenti.

Michael S. Judge

Firing off with zero private sources or information: Prilosec got a Dulles-themed award for helping push Pizzagate and QAnon on behalf of the Office of Naval Intelligence – the CIA's favorite military branch for "sheep-dipping," i.e. embedding its people to cover up their CIA backgrounds, as witness Pete Buttigieg – where he worked for 2 separate stints as a reservist AND a civilian, parts of it at Guantánamo Bay

Best of 2023 True Crime Podcast. Bad Vibes: The Virgil Texas Story

Thomas Carroll

Are you implying Virgil had bad vibes bc them are fighting words friend

justdave

As someone being slowly consumed by a large Anaconda I feel as if my incredibly unique and difficult challenges are not being understood or acknowledged and your casual disregard and snobbishness leave me reliving the very real and continuing trauma of, again, being slowly swallowed by a large Anaconda

Matthew Floratos

Petite Maman rules, legit one of the best movies of the year, very sweet and haunting

Post Void

You guys are sleeping on Expodition Content. You missed one part, it's the audio of Micheal Rockefeller being tortured and killed by natives in New Guinea. So that's a watch, well listen, for me thank you very much.

dog stone

you win the internet for today good sirs

SoConfused

The fusion news is kind of a red herring. It measures excess energy compared to the input laser. However, this has yet to be verified. Also, for a fusion reactor, it requires a chain reaction, which needs at least 20x surplus. So we are not close yet. This may be useful for fusion bombs, but not production power reactors.

D.O.D

Dismissing Souvenir Pt.2, The Eternal Daughter, and Petite Maman, lol damn that ain't it. Will tries so hard to be a movie guy but misses some of the most important cinema of the year, baffling. And he hasn't seen Decision To Leave, ok... That being said these lists suck shit lol

David Heslin

Thought it was good but a bit of a drop-off from Sciamma’s best work tbh. Great concept but gets a bit muddled through failing to really distinguish the mum and daughter characters; they just seem like mirrors by the end.

David Heslin

Chapo needs fewer hogs and more Hogg imo

Kamran Husain

i’ve been to a swedish dinner party all of their food sucks just they have the best dip tobacco in the world

Jacob Jones

Well, I live in Alabama and it is still fairly normal for us to invite people to dinner. We invite people over almost twice a week. Would do it more if we had time to cook every night and weren't so drained at the end of the work day.

Brendan A. MacWade

Anyone still on Twitter is a Nazi sympathizer. Delete your accounts. I don't care where you go, but you can't stay there.

Sydney Gottlieb was apparently a real new ager & it gave him the fortitude to emerge from multiple government investigations without a scratch.

Chubby Justin

This one was pretty excruciating

Chubby Justin

Every single topic on this one was lugubrious lol

andrew rogers

Lol spot on, both Will and Matt act like they know anything about movies but neither know shit about anything made outside of N. America and even that they stopped actually keeping up with a decade ago. which is too bad because Will at least has great taste. w/e at least they've done the good work of Verhoeven- and Cameron-pilling people

Well aged meme

Truffleman or whatever did some good stuff on 99%, but no, I will not be listening to 7 parts on lame clothes.

William

Light 3/5, line drive single of an episode. No real animating factor, still an easy listening experience. Reading series may be worth a listen in a month when you're at your data entry job

William

This is some lib shit

EaZy E

As a Business Analyst, what the fuck would anyone want to hear from me? What a stupid fucking idea. Those people should be ashamed of themselves.

William

So for him, getting that award is kind of like becoming an eagle scout or some shit?

Re: Hell on Earth bibliography, Verso Books has a sale through the end of the year. 40% off I think. Ellen Wood’s book is available there.

Twistedsister

Please make Matt is gay a running bit

Jack

Watch "The Northman" folks, the actual best movie of the year.

Do Golems Dream of Ceramic Sheep

l mean, its Livermore. ICF is there to give their physicists something to do before they decide to sell out and do (nuclear) stockpile stewardship work¹. This is a good thing, but l'm with the Paris Marx criticism, "Who wants to bet it will still be used as a 'tech will save us' delay tactic to stop us taking necessary action today to address the climate crisis?", on this one. [1] This is _massively_ oversimplified.

Jessica S

Great, great episode. Those movie recommends were the height of pretension. Barf.

It's not a bit tho he had to drink the gay potion

BureaucracyNow

Tar is low key goated when it comes to drama between cellists and the first violin

Cameron

Oh what so we are pro worker until it comes to working class CIA agents? Fake.

nadia

I love when you guys are so prepared to shit on something and then one of you has to admit it’s actually good… like Will already laughing thru his teeth about All the Beauty and Felix being like uhhh wait people told me that’s legit. At some point it gets boring and goofy to judge things after only hearing a plot synopsis and yeah NYT is corny but still I’d expect better from Will “movie buff” Menaker.

Scott Grabel

At this point, a fair number of Chapo listeners got here from write ups in the NYT, and having whole articles written about you is much higher praise than being on a clickbait list.

james petitious

Miss independent Miss self-sufficient Miss keep your distance Miss unafraid Miss out of my way

etienne

"shooting a billion lasers at a pinhead to make it fusion" okay awesome but when and how does the turbine come into play

Clean Shirt Piggie

No it’s a deep dive into how bad vibes removed a podcast visionary from the historical podcast record

vermouth

nah that shit looks wack no one except red scare types has seen this movie

etienne

I had a brain bubble and thought the article was saying that reporters were hate-watching jack posobiec like just being there at the station and just hating on him

nadia

oh damn I forgot that caring about art is for pussies and women respectively

J

Neptune Frost is good!

Twistedsister

Oh shit! Did he already do it? Was there video?

Drew McGill

Damn, the Peaks theme at the end got me 🥺

Drew McGill

Biggest meh I ever walked out of. Both of Eggers other films are better than that one. Definitely didn’t feel like it wasn’t his full vision.

Drew McGill

Agreed! One of the years best. In my top 10.

Ian Woods

5:30 - Person of Interest mention! Best network show of the past 20 years.

Doug Cartel

I think American Ivy is American McGee's kid not really

Doug Cartel

malcolm gladwell seems pretty pissed off about black people

I'm remaining hopefully optimistic about the fusion news, if only because I like imagining all of the cope tweets Elon's penning because the scientific development of the century isn't his. And more importantly, publicly funded.

Ozzie

Cocaine Bear early favorite for best picture

justdave

They used to own slaves

calvin kilby

i thought it was really good despite it being fodder for assholes with valknut tattoos on their necks. hope he gets to continue making films.

calvin kilby

lol the only people who listen to red scare are HIV-positive dog walkers who do open mic spots twice a month

teacup

I find her to be the hardest prompt possible in "smash or pass"

calvin kilby

i think the cinematography and framing was really good but the actual plot and pacing were uninteresting. still one of the most beautiful films i've seen in a theater.

calvin kilby

year of the smile? more like year of the simile!

Alex

We already have cheap, effectively infinite information via fiber optic technology. In practice our ISPs throttle down the bandwidth to create artificial pricing tiers. I imagine a similar system would be built in the advent of fusion power plants. We’ll have subscription based access to power supplies and consumers will be paying what they are now, with the savings going to whoever owns the grid infrastructure

Poppy Chulo

I have secret santa at work and I was thinking about a variation called secret satan where you get each other dangerous gifts. Like a tin of candy corn but it also has a trapdoor spider in it.

Elspeth Hunt

Petite Maman was pretty good, actually. Worth seeing, I think.

T

Needs squibs.

Declan Hertel

best thing about quora is all the dudes who respond to someone asking about like healing from a new piercing with “you deserve to die of infection if you’re stupid enough to get pierced”

Boo I’m from vermont there for I should be on a podcast

Rollo Tomassi

RIP Angelo Badalamenti! Thanks for the nod

WillyGetSilly

What’s the song on the outro? Thank you!

justdave

By heating water vapor into super heated steam, yup, but my vision of limitless power is not the end of capitalism but the freedom of our power structures from energy reliance, like giving steroids to the tall kid in class

pinemeat

twin peaks theme by angelo badalamenti

Alex

The grid is already built though. In America, these capital costs remain the same. All that’s needed is a new substation and some transmission lines connecting the new generator. After building the infrastructure, it’s like owning a car wash. It’s all routine service

FusEldar

the "rich spoon deposit in a unstable african country" joke killed me.

Clean Beans

2023 is the year of the simile

Alex

I imagine a nuclear reactor is actually cheaper than a hydroelectric plant per KWh. Your regular power bill comes from the routine service costs I mentioned. You haven’t said anything I haven’t said

Of course

Your so called "bibliography" fails to include Ben Shapiro's Defenestrating Prague Hottie Heroes into Large Vats of Tasty Vanilla Custard (Regnery, 2019)

etienne

James O. Incandenza ass movie lmao

Alex Preston

That movie segment fucking sucked. Sounded like you guys were reading off the comment section from the NYT’s Facebook post for that article. Sad to see Will betraying the core principals of the Movie Mindset.

Gulb

So, Imagine my name is Electricity. I give 100 bucks to a guy named Laser, He uses that 100 bucks to make 1 dollar which he gives to a guy named Fusion. Fusion uses that dollar to make 1 dollar and change. Laser hands me the change and says Fusion made money. This is the sense in which the LLNL fusion experiment had "net energy gain". Sorry everyone.

Edward Fath

Maybe it’s just the woke mind virus speaking through me but trashing beautiful movies sight unseen just makes these guys look like dullards. Will can make anything sound stupid when he uses his Reading Series voice lmao

Shane

Agreed

Andrew E Houston

I don't know, I thought Nope was pretty good.

Axel H.

Yeah they should’ve just picked another article. I’m all for them critiquing movies they’ve seen, even if it’s negative. But critiquing them based on a blurb in the NYT doesn’t make much sense. All that segment did was make me look up all these movies and add some of them to my watchlist. 🤷‍♂️

Kit Sedia

Yes! I teach a class on how textile industry and fashion shaped society, and we ended up listening to this podcast a lot, since it really brought much of the class war aspect, status signaling, and sumptuary laws into modern context.

Robby Gross

Vermont town with Christmas lights up all year? Feel like this one went over my head lol

Axel H.

The problem with the movie and podcast lists is that they were judging them based only on a blurb, which isn’t enough for entertaining riffing. When they mock bad conservative films or that terrible Chelsea Clinton Apple TV show, they actually watched them so they know what they’re talking about. Here they’re just judging things that might be good (and might not be). It came off as low effort. I like the funny negativity but it’s more funny when they know the content and can pick specific things that are ridiculous. Anything sounds stupid if you say it in a snarky, cynical tone.

etienne

I never watch any movies and I thought that section was funny as fuck idk

Christopher Price

Movie Mindset pass is revoked if you're admitting on the air that you're not in the seats on opening weekend of a Park Chan-Wook flick.

Christopher Price

And Tang Wei is the best actress working, fucking fight me.

TangiePower

If you want film recs, I’m catching up on the Kurosawa samurai movies for the first time. I’ve watched Seven Samurai, Rashomon, and Yojimbo so far. Sanjuro, The Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood and Kagemusha on deck. All from the library. Ran is on hold, waiting for it to come in.

Chubby Justin

Love the idea that the government hands these dumbfuck cia crybabies top secret clearances so they can write about their the subject matter of their top secret work in an op-eds. Very important spy stuff they be doing.

Ian Woods

Considering a dollar and change had never come out of that interaction before, still hopeful news. Gotta power the Annihilatrix somehow!

teacup

show me ur silly willy

RT

Yeah. It’s a neat milestone but one of many to see fusion energy come to fruition. The subsequent ones are technical (materials science to get the materials sturdy enough to last long enough for a plant to be profitable, engineering the fuel injection cycle to occur reliably at least ten times a second - also FWIW I think tokamaks are seen in the community as more viable than ICF), but arguably even bigger challenge is economic. Fusion will never get built out unless it can compete on a cost basis with natural gas. This won’t happen unless some pricing mechanism is put in place to elevate the cost of natural gas (recognizing the cost of climate change). I used to be more of a lib and advocate in a citizens group for that but it’s hard to imagine any gov imposing increased fossil energy costs especially in the current energy crisis and inflation. The failure of world governments to really do anything in that regard despite increasing urgency from eg the scientific community, the UN, the IPCC doesn’t bode well. I’m afraid it’s more global capitalism than physics which stands in the way of fusion. BTW if that did happen, fission (SMRs, various GenIV designs) would sop up that market share first

Edward Fath

“Critics who write for a newspaper I dislike are positive on a piece of media so I’m going to say it sucks without any investigation of my own.” Ugly, incurious way to go through life

Axel

Je crois que le Monsieur Christman, l'historien, et le reste du gang will find tout plein d'interest de lire les livres de Nobel winning, working-class, Annie Ernaux pour finaly savoir ce qui se cache behind le peuple à la baguette.

orc

Only good podcasts are leftist/absurdist podcasts that literally make you schizophrenic

Turlough Kelly

No-one would go on Quora for advice if they were being swallowed by an anaconda, they'd go on Reddit and post "I'm being swallowed by an anaconda, ask me anything"

Major bit me

That’s only some of the intelligence-embedded NYT team, they get trauma and depression from having to talk to the rest of the writers in the break room tho.

Agent Grange

Controversial opinion but I think torture workers SHOULDNT be covered by the CIO-AFL.

Katie Gerbasi

Is the reading series article by Claire Danes in Homeland

Dan

These last few eps. Screw the NYT top ten lists, who cares. I want a breakdown of media people actually watch, not today’s shape of water. We want an ep on Yellowstone.

John Swan

I always thought this podcast needed more shoe cobbling noises

Maxwell

Chapo needs more sound effects. I think it would be nice if the How High DVD menu music played in the background for every show

Tom Hart

Please do an episode on Yellowstone

Fred Owens

I'm enjoying the bibliography for Hell on Earth! Any chance of Matt doing something similar for general books he recommends?

James Browning

Nice ending music. Baldalamenti was one of the greats. A maestro indeed

United Eric Emirates

what exactly are these CIA ‘drowning robots’ Matt offhandedly mentions?

Finn Langley

When will the avatar way of water ep be. I'm so fkn excited for that one

Dan Powell

I briefly worked at America Public Media and knew Brendan Francis Newnam when he hosted Dinner Party Download. I once overheard him say how he doesn’t like to go to outer parts of Brooklyn because of all the ugly people, and that soho has “the type of people he moved to New York to look at.” I cannot think of someone I’d be less interested to hear a show about making friends in a new place from

Oliver

Petite maman is good, that's a strike

Julie Baxter

You're a good person. Fingernails grow back. It's okay.

Julie Baxter

But imagine the trauma the Anaconda feels after consuming you.

justdave

Ohhhh so now I'm not even good enough to be eaten? Thanks Julie, looks like me and the snake are going back to therapy

Joe

It's weird that they skipped over Flux Gourmet on AO Scott's list. Maybe they edited that part out which just makes me more interested in their take.

justdave

It's a tough life in the queens navy, but it's the only life I know

AbeLinkin

Sounds like an asshole

AbeLinkin

Once again Hayley is on-point lol. Gregg Turkington knows his stuff.

AbeLinkin

Nah pretty much all social media is evil

Cormac O'Brien

gegg turkleton is a hack and a fraud

D.O.D

Flux Gourmet was insanely good

I am become reply guy

I heard a lighter at the end there. There should have been someone sniffling and revving a motorcycle too.

Mesothelioma

RIP to Angelo Badalamenti. That legendary Twin Peaks theme is so beautifully haunting

Daniel Webbon

I literally work as a cobbler and I feel seen.

Heather L.

Sorry- fruity beers are delicious.

etienne

their assessment of Blue Moon as being perfectly mid-high is spot on however. It's not because I like it a lot that it makes it like an especially good beer. I'm just happy when I can buy a reliable wit in a tallcan at the corner store

Ryan David LaBonte

What??? Blue moon?! You can’t talk about beer if you drink beers that have TV ads, Karen.

Ben Burke

I liked Nope it was fun and exciting

MKatieUltra

Nan Goldin’s photography is amazing, I think that movie will be legit.

MKatieUltra

I have listened to that video so many gd times

Daniel Morrissey

I'm a big dumb sack of shit who thought tar was in fact mostly about cancel culture. Can one of you smartypants explain what it was actually about? Thx

Will Griffin

Shout-out to the trillbillies for having an episode months ago that consisted of Terence recapping the plot of Lost Illusions (the novel) to Tom so now months later Will mentions Lost Illusions and i instantly think "OH SHIT THE BALL SACK BOOK!"

Tyler Sutherland

Of course you fucking hacks don’t like Nope but love the shit out of recycled garbage like Avatar 2 lmfao
