Matt and Danny invite Noah Kulwin of Blowback to explore the question: what if Richard Nixon, not John F. Kennedy, won the 1960 presidential election?

Degrassi Knoll

Dead Kennedys would need a new name.

Swimaroo

I think of hinge points like 5-8 times a week

Jackson Ehlert

Noah Kulwin on the pod let’s goooo

Matt Norman

Ironic how they ran against each other but both ended up being ousted by the CIA in coups

Anders Scholl

the cast should play & review gmt's election game '1960: the making of the president'

Mike Loudin

We love our points when they hinge, don't we folks

Clint Pelvis

hinge points lol more like what of shit was diffrent lol

Clint Pelvis

lol and what it shot were different

etienne

what if my cock was big call that Hung Point

Gengeros

What if stalin wasn’t killed and the Soviet Union didn’t go revisionist in 1957?

Michael S. Judge

Richard Nixon, quite simply, was a man who ate ketchup on cottage cheese, started a burger chain with Howard Hughes's brother that was probably a money-laundering front, wrote letters in the voice of an abused dog, and tried to bro down by asking other men if they'd "had sexual intercourse recently"

etienne

communist state have a normal transfer of power challenge [xbox live acchievement badge: have a couple of those and then don't accidentally elect one guy Chairman For Life]

Jack

The intro has really tantalized my monkey brain. A little production has gone a long way for my simple self I will admit

m-c

nixon and pelosi are not of the same congressional district. it is the same nominal 12th district, but when nixon held it it was whittier’s district, not the bay area’s

Cole

sorry, it's small. Everyone saw it and said it was overdeterminedly so

calvin kilby

china seems to have done a pretty good job transferring power from leader to leader.

Archie MacLellan

Sounds like he was a big hit with the ladies.

William

Please tell me there's an episode about Kennedy living + second term; out of Vietnam, neutered CIA, rapprochement with USSR and Cuba... Or bobby living - like how are the assassinations of the late 60s not hingepoints

Matelda

Love Noah but he needs to slow down. Buddy, you talk too fast. I have a slow brain.

etienne

yeah that's where I was getting at, it's commendable but Xi should have passed the baton at least a couple years ago. this is bad

MC Prescott

There was a lot of incoherent rambling in this ep

Jenn

Good slop

Of course

I'm glad someone is communicating what the Chapo audience wants to know, as opposed to prepping for holiday dinner banter with the normals. "Sure, but what if Mao had defeated both Kennedy and Nixon?"

Of course

The line I keep hearing now is: in China, the people can't change the government, but they can change the policy... in America, the people can change the faces in government, but can't change the policy.

Clean Shirt Piggie

What if Danny, Matt, and Noah were in the same room with a single mic?

Clean Shirt Piggie

If Nixon then JFK, RFK, MLK, Malcolm assassinations wouldn’t have happened?

David Andrews

Hinge Points has been stellar thus far. Excellent discussion guys.

Clean Shirt Piggie

General Cushbomb, Chapo liaison to the CIA. It’s all becoming clear

Marc Catapano -Flowers in the Concrete Tours/Geekedelia Media

1) IIRC correctly Nixon was one of Eisenhower’s primary liaison’s to Black Republicans (prominent Nixon supporters included at different times Jackie Robinson and Wilt Chamberlain) so I could see him trying to co op the Civil Rights movement in a more bourgeoise, proto Libertarian direction.

Marc Catapano -Flowers in the Concrete Tours/Geekedelia Media

2) Amateur psychologist me thinks that Nixon was genuinely driven to gain the respect of his Quaker mother, and even in the 60’s would have aimed for some sort of grand global detente - and notwithstanding his brutal, undemocratic methods in other areas- would have ultimatly balked at nuclear war

Marc Catapano -Flowers in the Concrete Tours/Geekedelia Media

3) If Nixon was president would the Beatles have happened? The 60’s youth counter culture was a global phenomena and would have reached the US in some fashion but it would be interesting to imagine what shape it would have happened without the shock of the Kennedy assassination

Clean Shirt Piggie

What if Jerry Falwell Sr. had his wife screw a pool boy so he could watch during the Nixon presidency of 1961-65?

T

What if Grace Slick tricked Nixon into taking acid?

Starry Pr1nce

Already heard Danny do enough counterfactual on the American Exception pod where he was arguing against the existence/ efficacy of American propaganda and generally failing to account for the effects of the security state, do i even want to listen to this one ? Can you separate nixon from the dulles Brothers? Someone tldr it.

Michael S. Judge

well have YOU had sexual intercourse recently

Jake Zydek

Chris' sonorous radio-gold voice at the end adds much needed low- to mid-range frequencies to the otherwise nasaly intro

Fresh Dill

I do enjoy this series but I feel like this season has been very focused on a “great man” theory of history (Luther, Napoleon, Nixon)

B.C.

Bessner always sounds like he's writing fanfiction after reading the spark notes of the book. 90% of his takes are 0.0001 probabilities or unmoored from basic notions of cause and effect, etc. No more of him please.

justdave

No, but I have been writing haikus from the perspective of a cat with emotional damage

justdave

I stand at the door, my soft pink butthole puckers, the man is comming

Ryan Gullage

Robert Coover gives better Christman.

Warbs

I really enjoyed this one, well done! I can't wait for Noah to return.

marcus rose

Start your own podcast I'm sure itll be so awesome

Robby Gross

Eisenhower paving over black neighborhoods with the interstates was as much ‘race warfare’ as anything else

shinyfailure

Perfectly normal human activities

Matelda

I'm not a full-time JFK head but I think he surprised them. He came from good inbred corrupt-magnate stock. I never heard until now that they preferred him over Nixon in 1960, but I could kinda see it.

Backofhouse4

My understanding is that there is no evidence that JFK authorized the assassination of Ngô Đình Diệm

Steve D

The closing discussion with Noah and Matt going back and forth was very good. Basically everything in the final 8 minutes.

Lydia Maria Child

What if 20 million people didn't do a thing on October 25th 1456? Doesn't really work here...

J.W.

Intro is 45 seconds too long. JFC.

james

Another day, another hinge point.

Dino Zaccagna

I'm late but Noah is great in this one.

K U

We love Noah, don't we folks?

Heather Kim

This was a great episode, cheers!

Slamp

I would love for y'all to do an episode on if Robert Moses never came to power in NYC. Like what city planning would look like if he had never been there to derail public transit?

Robert Calcagno

Dead serious, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like Walt Disney would gain influence with his EPCOT project becoming more of a national project.
