We’re joined by Bomani Jones, host of Game Theory on HBO, to discuss pro-sports and labor, including NFL player health in the wake of Damar Hamlin’s recent hospitalization, and NBA player bargaining power. We also briefly touch on the rapid rise of sports gambling and of course, who we’ve got for this Sunday’s Big Game.

Then, the boys are all together in LA this week and catch up on the Chinese Balloon, Kamala Harris, the Grammys, our favorite unfinished TV commercial storylines, the Book of Job, and more.

Follow Bomani at @Bomani_Jones and watch Game Theory with Bomani Jones Friday's at 11pm on HBO and HBO Max.

Holy shit! Was not expecting this crossover.

Alex

Holy shit what a crossover! This fucking rules

Beehive Fucker

I really hope he talks about how Stevie Wonder isn't blind

Ardy Rezv

That one was gay

Ed Wood

Love Bomani. Glad you had him on.

Nolan

It’s a sports episode I gotta get them all off here

foxy

But I don't know anyone who makes 500k a year. It may seem like levels of wealth to them but it's still outside of reality

Nolan

LeBomani

Hunter

Lmao the only three podcasts I consistently listen to now that Revolutions is done are TrueAnon, Chapo, and The Right Time, Bomani’s podcast. What a fucking crossover, well done lads

Nolan

The NFL only gave Damar Hamlin an exception because the entire Monday Night Football audience saw a guy go into cardiac arrest and technically die on the field.

Ian

$500k a year is within the top 1% of income earners in the US.

Osborne MOCs

Bomani is great holy shit what a get

caroline

i am enthusiastic

pq

Whoa Bomani on Chapo is a phrase I never thought I would say

will field

Dude Bomani is so good, this was a great episode guys. I really enjoyed the interview

Dr. TJ Eckelberg

What a get. Bomani and Will talking labor issues in sports is the stuff of dreams. Incredible job

KatrinaJadeHelm

God damn this interview rocks. Getting reminded that Andre Iguodala was out there with “group economics” on his jersey lmfao

Doopdeedoodee

Sweet Jesus. More sports chapo PLEASE!

Nolan

If resources were directed properly the owners wouldn’t be as rich as they are and then how is LeBron James underpaid for being a basketball player?

Richard

Great interview.

HeyB00B00

Man, God Bless Felix for even mentioning Erin e-surance😂😂😂 had me dying

dj

for 4-5 years, and then most of them wash out with no real career prospects beyond coaching high school

Will Thompson

You’re in the 1%, but unlike a tech startup owner you’re essentially selling your body (and often your brain and functionality in your middle age-elderly years) in the most extreme sense to enter that tier of earners, the average NFL career is 3 years and a lot of those dudes are broke shortly after their career ends. I’d recommend watching Jon Bois’ “Randall Cunningham Seizes the Means of Production” on YouTube

Justin Slepicka

My two worlds have collided this is awesome

Dan Dombrowski

we just need matt to get in Dan le batards ear about Cuba. someone pass the word

Tristan Clark

Dear Prudy call ins means Stavy for next week's episode if there's any justice in this world.

Nathan McBrady

Someone should have warned me this episode was straight fire; I might’ve still had my home

Meatwad Cosby

Bomani is great as always. Great get, fellas.

Tim

I genuinely soy-faced when I saw the notification

K H

Ong fr? Jus like that?

K H

Self owned and self coached teams. Let's see it. Only problem is they would get targeted for all the steroid testing.

Ty Baron

Y’all the show is so much funnier when you’re in the same room

Alexandr

Dan The Bastard?

J P 3

Great interview -- optimal duration too. The thing with the Bills-Bengals and DeMar is that the players and the coaches exercised their power in calling the game off. Hard to see that happening in most work places -- especially one without a unionized labor force.

Stateside Reds

that was fuckin cool. met bomani when I worked at the guitar center in Durham, NC. he seemed very nice then, and it was nice to hear him again. cheers fellas, nice one

K H

It's a weather balloon. They are released twice a day in every developed country that does weather observation of upper atmosphere. The balloon they shot down probably wasn't even the same one they saw by Alaska. The CHAI KNEES weather balloon probably popped somewhere out of radar coverage and they just kept bullshitting because how the fuck would you know. So least stupid scenario, it's a normal weather balloon borne on by the jetstream. Most stupid, the first balloon popped somewhere in Canada and they shot a random rawinsonde that was launched from one of the weather collection sites in Carolina. For once it was actually just a weather balloon.

Chae Heuer

Real talk, these podcasts kept a homeless veteran alive during the winter nights. I’m glad to say I’m no longer sleeping on the streets and I still listen to this podcast.

Archibald

great interview, hilarious irl riffs with the boys but damn one of yall gotta stop playing the mic like a tambourine

J P 3

In 2017 there were news reports that a bunch of Clinton donors and staff were starting to line up behind Kamala Harris in preparation for a 2020 run. This was in the back of my mind when VP picks were being selected in 2020. Klobuchar may have been Biden's initial preference, but when the George Floyd murder happened, Harris checked the necessary boxes as a second option. I think Harris's selection was primarily a sop to the Clinton-faction -- e.g. donors, party operatives, etc.

Geeb

Bomani was a great guest, easily my favorite Will-only interview

Pedro

bomani is Him

Chris

This was awesome, love a sports ep

Purple Lemons

The fact they used an F-22 is actually funnier, because it's like a $400 million jet, makes the F-35 price tag look like a honda, and this is it's first and probably only ever air-to-air kill

ADIFT

So of course i think the owners are the badder guys, but I just don't really care about pro athletes either. Just because they are next to wealthier people doesnt make them more sympathetic to the average person.

Maxiumite

Great interview. Never heard of Bomani, but he was awesome

Jingle Jangler

"jug hooting morons" is my new favorite insult

TugNuggins

Oh? Did a sporpball happen? 🙄🙄😒😒😒 Jk good ep. Bomani was very entertaining

William

Fuck man, you’re living proof that practice and grinding doesn’t make you better, literally at all

Chubby Justin

That is the only fire sam smith song

Adam Murphy

Did not know that about Dre, damn that's cringe

etienne

s p o r n t s

etienne

unlike you snowflakes im not easily offended [2 newspaper articles later] WHY FOOTBALL MAN WANT MONEY

Matelda

Weird as fuck that sports teams have "owners."

NorthernPatreonOfTheArts

Great guest, thanks for talking about sports, so much more goes on there than just the playing

Ivy

healthcare please

James Blackmon

Bomani was great. Get him on more often.

Michael Ouderkirk

Fun fact: the woman who plays Flo from Progressive actually appeared in an episode of "Cavemen"!

The wazzzzaaapp bud light dude

Because his labor produces far more value than he is compensated for. He is undoubtedly rich, but as a basketball player he is a worker in the capitalist dynamic.

Matt Boi

Bomani is a fantastic guest, great episode!

Zara D

Bomani was an awesome guest, hope he shows up again sometime!

Ian Rogers

Lunch pail guys are talking about the balloon and it is every bit as stupid as you’d think

Well aged meme

This guy's voice, goddamn I could listen to him talk all day.

Doug Cartel

the joke about NASCAR is that people only watch it hoping for a car to explode, so the notion that we're actively ignoring the pain caused by football is interesting. Part of it is obviously that you can pretend a car is just a burning box, and there's no psych filter when you watch a 350 pound guy land on the neck of another 350 pound guy.

Flesh Colored Subaru

Given the chapo guest curse, fully expecting Bomani to get cancelled before May

Nolan

Yes but ideally the owners wouldn’t be making the money they’re making. Yea in a capitalist society LeBron is worth more. But like I said if resources were distributed responsibly LeBron is not at all underpaid.

Nolan

LeBron’s value is also given a huge boost from the way the league and sports media market him. You would think LeBron had 10 rings the way they exaggerate everything he does.

Nolan

NFL players are underpaid. Not LeBron.

Doug Cartel

they were freaking out about the China Balloon because it was knocked off course by the polar vortex (weird, they're not talking about those right now) and when they found out that there were balloons further south that had *not* been thrown off course (because they were further south) they started screaming that china was trying to spy on "Latin America", the whole thing, for, i don't know, flanking routes?

brodie

Imma let you guys in on a secret, you can eat horse shit any time. no one is going to stop you

Demented Avenger

I just wanna say that don't replace Kamala Harris. Her term as President will be so funny that it will rival Trump's.

B2B Commuter

We’re rewatching mad men, and she also plays a switch board operator in the first season.

B2B Commuter

Look no further than the Lions/Pats game from earlier this season. lions had a player get paralyzed bumping a receiver going into his route (complete freak injury, incredibly jarring) on the second play of the game, and had them back after a 1/2 hour break that included everyone watching the player’s father scramble down from the stands to get into the ambulance. This game was on when a bunch of other games were on so the viewership was diluted and there wasn’t really an outcry

Heather Kim

What other guests got canceled?

etienne

Glenn "Always Be Posting" Glengarry Greenwald

Reece Coren

didn’t know it was possible to like bomani more

Benjamin O Levine

This interview kicked ass, idk bomani and I’m all nba/zero nfl but man I might sift through his show

Saga

Straight off the bat Bomani's comments about unemployment hit so close to home. I'm looking for work right now, and there's next to nothing I can do in-between job hunts that doesn't cost money.

orc

Get Bomani on TrueAnon

Mike Mariano

Literally did the “You’re telling me now for the first time” hand gesture when Will mentioned the Super Bowl was this weekend and the teams playing.

orc

sportsball is counterrevolutionary 🙄🙄

Michael Landreth

based Bomani one of the few real ones in that industry

Justin Roll

please more Chapo sports episodes i beg you

Daniel

Incredible crossover. Always been clear Bomani is for the people but didn’t know it could go as far as linking up with Chapo. Also new dream blunt rotation featuring Will, Bo and JR Smith

Daniel

PS now that I’m in a world where Bomani can show up on here, next Chapo x Sports episode consider bringing the god Spencer Hall on

Michael Ouderkirk

Mad Men seems like it was going to set up an upstairs/downstairs thing with those phone operators in the pilot. Kristen Schaal was only in the pilot. I guess they abandoned that. Makes sense, any plot points with the phone girls could easily be given to early Peggy.

Will Thompson

Someone said we need a Texas labor tradition and football ep with Spencer, David Griscom and Bomani.

Jenn

Having wasted much of my life watching Bomani on Around the Horn, then subsequently wasted much of my life listening to Chapo, thank you for this

Michael Landreth

Obvious psy op is obvious. Escalating the new cold war benefits corporate/government leadership in both China and the US. Blinken and Xi probably dreamed the whole thing up together on the phone.

Ian

The Stanley Cup is awarded directly to the players — the people’s trophy! Lol

etienne

why do a psyops about a weird spy balloon when you can send an actual weird spy balloon. the result is the same, even with the balloon you can gather some extra bonus intel too

Louis

I loved R Lee Ermey and Timothet Chalamet in Call me By Your Rifle

Oliver Clozov

yeah when he said rookie players "only" make $500,000 a year and have to pay percentages on top of that... okay so you chose to be a millionaire celebrity gladiator, forgive me if i don't see the similarity between you and railroad workers or carpenters trying to improve their situations

foxy

of course they're trying to spy on us. We're spying on them too. We don't even hide it

Doug Cartel

No debate there, we had satellites flying over china long before they had any.

etienne

yeah like at some point you have to engage with the fact that everyone is always doing Esoteric Tradecraft on everyone else at all times

Mickey Gallz

Love Bomani from sports reporters in the late 00's to his HBO show great guest. If you can get him again would love a longer interview

Adam H.

Won't someone please think of the half-a-million dollar earning pro atheletes!?

Jimmy McMillan

I refuse to talk about players salaries in sports. All the discourse about salary caps and teams overpaying players is such an ingenious way to get regular people to worry about Billionaire bosses

Scott Grabel

When Satan shows up in the Book of Job, or anywhere else in the Old Testament, that is some Christian retconning bullshit

B2B Commuter

On some level, yeah, but I think you’re also ignoring the fact that both driving a car really fast and playing football are both a ton of fun, and you can get joy out of watching someone else do a fun thing in a way that’s better than you could ever dream to.

kenton

love this guys fake ass blaccent

Louie Luke

Did they make Jake black to pander? I just assumed he was the new actor. I didn't think much about it past "oh guess this is the new guy." How do people have enough energy in life to focus on this shit?

B2B Commuter

My dad and I went to the pistons/bucks game in Detroit two weeks back and they played a video honoring Dave Bing in the stadium during one of the tv timeouts. During the video they talked about how he was the head of the NBAPA that allowed the salary cap in basketball in as glowing of terms as they talked about him being elected Mayor of Detroit, truly an enraging bit of corporate propaganda.

Michael Landreth

Sure. A real spy balloon and real military aircraft that really shot it down. But a spy balloon that, as the boys point out, had little hope of gathering any intel the Chinese do not already possess, and a military intervention in the name of national security when there was no actual threat to national security. It’s all real except for the stories that motivated the actions of Chinese and US leadership. Gathering intel or protecting national security is not actually the point. The spectacle of it all is the point. In all honesty, I am being a little cheeky. Everything is a psyop, and so nothing is a psyop.

etienne

Pro Spornts players are one of those edge cases of wage labour like half mil per year Silicon Valley developers where you can genuinely say that they generate even way more value than what they are paid in cash yet they are still technically proletriat in a comparable fight against capital

B2B Commuter

Happy Trump calling DeSantis a pedophile to all that celebrate.

George Spafford

Great get. You’re def opening chapo faithful up to the best sports analyst out there. I’ll always love the Cleveland caucasians shirt

dum surfer

I thought it was really fascinating when will and bomani were discussing players "knowing the risks" of the game, that their adults etc. but yes it really is a decision being made (or at least heavily influenced) by the parents. if your entire adolescence if football football football, then the obvious choice is to continue with football even if at that point youre aware of the risks. not a huge sporto but this was a great ep, i'd love to see more of this kind of thing

james

Sorry I have a strict not caring about athletes policy

gilgachest

Can someone explain the context of the Rob Lowe photo

Will Thompson

Rob Lowe wore a hat to the Super Bowl that just had the NFL shield on it, which is hilarious, he doesn’t have a team, just rooting for the league. Became a big meme format for playing both sides/rooting for drama

Kamran Husain

i’m more of a pti guy but the around the horn pti hour was a daily ritual until i went away for school

Drew McGill

Your guys film taste of the worst and it’s hilarious. Surprised how much I liked the interview though. Not a sports guy but he was great.

Bill

Great guest, great interview

Robert Calcagno

But that’s $500K that God forbid something happens injury wise in your rookie year, that’s $500K you’re spreading over years of reconditioning AND not having insurance.

JD

Love the guest, but he sounds waay too much like Felix’s Southern/Stupid accent

justdave

As I drift, as if a cloud. So far from eath soon I ponder, and delight, at the imagined good merth, that all men must have for me, a merry balloon. But hark, what is that yonder, that has just taken flight I wonder?

i guess

Please ask Felix to stop fiddling with his mic.

etienne

violence against the ADHD community

W

This rocks. Makes me miss Highly Questionable a lot

W

I get that but their place in the public consciousness means that if they asserted power there could be wider knowledge of worker strength

Josh

Bomani riffing on a sports movie or some shit with all three of the boys would be amazing

Kyle Martin

Taibbi... Greenwald... Angela Nagle to an extent

Kyle Martin

Iirc Tony reali is a pretty good dude in his own right

Kyle Martin

The worst part about the new Jake from state farm era is that when they brought it back they just used the original ad with new Jake at the end. Holy fuck was it lazy

Antonio Da Silva Rego

What is the name of the song that you use at minute 32? Would love to know it :)

Poppy Chulo

I could do without the sports talk. It's fine as long as it doesn't cut into the episode, like the sports talk and then an hour of the guys riffing... which didn't happen.

Poppy Chulo

Rob Lowe is an empty vessel.

Poppy Chulo

What are you referring to? If this is in defense of m night shamalamananas new movie you're out of your mind.

Poppy Chulo

Lol really? It's so obvious. Like 80 percent of the cast of commercials is black people now. It's totally pandering.

Poppy Chulo

I really wish she would get cancer.

Thomas Carroll

holy crap this show is 20% better when you're all in person together

Ll

Bo fucking rules.

Mark Schneider

So sometimes you guys do really nail it. Forced to drive thru Wisconsin on Tuesday (don't ask) & doing the random radio scanning in the rural areas I did hear a hate radio jock literally claiming that Brandon needed to call his bosses at the CCP before shooting down the balloon!! (& not surprised that Matt or even Felix know the Wisconsin death trip beat, but impressive that Will has absorbed the zeitgeist as well)

Daniel Dresden

this was a great interview. Im gonna have to check out his show.

carl

a la Dealey Plaza and people laying in the street, when I was in Sarajevo many years ago there were tourists reenacting the assassination of arch duke with gun hands

etienne

naval pipefitters filled a similar role at the time of the first communist revolutions. Very well paid, politically powerful, not part of the capital, still working with their bare hands to generate value for the shareholder, still being remunerated less than their excess value. I think the correct term is "labour aristocracy"

DrChristmas

It’s fun how reactionaries like to point to Russian recruitment ads as real evidence of them being more badass than an America, with all its PrOnOuNs. We used to be able to fight lava monsters!

etienne

just for fun, have you seen any of that propaganda memesphere make jokes about how americans are too fat or too uneducated to pass army recruitment? because that (and the economy being too good rn) is like the biggest real world problem that the pentagon has lol

Adam Hurst

Loved this episode - get us some new sports content boys, we crave a new angle

Emmer Effer

Bomani on Chapo? never thought I'd see the day

J.P. McD.

Ah, making fun of Shyamalan’s name, good one! I think you’re ready to graduate to the Ain’t It Cool News comments section! Movie was great.

J.P. McD.

Knock at the Cabin was great, Shyamalan has been “back” (if he was ever gone) for at least 7 years now

J.P. McD.

lmao, axe to grind much?

rolfesam

Bring this man back asap

Nolan

If you followed basketball religiously you’d understand.

Poppy Chulo

He made one good movie (great movie) 24 years ago.

Poppy Chulo

Nobody is stopping you from consuming all the dogshit you want.

Dan

They got rid of the original Jake because he kept driving drunk

Martynas Klimas

I don't care about sports, much less American sports at all, but this is fucking stellar guest and an amazing subject
