Probably We're Not So Different, Eleanor's pod, Matt & Chris guested on it a few months back to plug this series.

etienne

there's a big ethnic boundary in quebec between the french who would divide land as described in thin strips with the narrow end on the river versus the english who would divide land in big abstract squares. I've always thought it made more sense the french way, you get to concentrate the infrastructure and the people a bit closer together and have the crops just vibing a bit farther away, versus having the one country house in the middle of the field 20 minute walk from anything else

etienne

she was pretty great on Trashfuture

veni

Loving this ep and guest, but: Fronce.

Jon D.

Great guest.

Sean Brocklehurst

Great episode, awesome guest, will check out her podcast.

Agent Grange

Great episode, Elanour is funny and very well informed, I feel like I learned a lot from this episode and I hope we see more of her as guest in the future. Even the more editorialized bits I very much vibe with. Guess on historical podcast frankly can be pretty dry sometimes so this was insanely refreshing and enjoyable.

James Wallace

I'm gonna miss that banger track at the end. With the harpsichord

Steve D

Dr. Goat

pepto_azymuth

She's so smart but I keep hearing Andrew tate in that accent lol

pepto_azymuth

I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Almost distractin lmao

Doug Cartel

Sean's Russia Blog interviewed a lot of historians who talk like this, but after listening to all this I realize it's kind of a breath of fresh air to have someone talking in a different style after Matt's intense style. like uhhh, drinking vodka after binging a whole case of bud light. yes this is the best metaphor for this

erik w bjorke

Interesting, all this talk about taxation and armies and modern state building was being done by the East Romans all through the Middle Ages.

Saga

The Brits are especially unforgiving when it comes to different pronunciations of english words. I basically had to adopt a faux british accent when I lived there because I was constantly roasted for the way I pronounced words like 'data'.

Saga

Really loved this one. I'm not the biggest fan of medieval European history, but this was a fascinating perspective. Eleanor's really witty and engaging, too.

soldiermighty

god the theme music absolutely slaps

Rene Saller

Really enjoyed this one, too!

jack flowers

ok was that a kraftklub reference Dr. Janega made at like 32?

Post Void

Xenophobia is the root cause of Nationalism, who would have thunk it!

John Zich

Byzantium erasure's kinda been Western Europe's jam since at least the Great Schism.

Tony Campbell

Great guest, but her accent sounds just like Andrew Tate--and that shit was mad distracting.

Geneyus

Dr Janega did a great job explaining London, as an American from the 21st century I was always confused how London grew so much considering it was a trade endpoint, it wasn’t along a major trade route like the Spanish or Silk Road, sure it had wool but if you’re shipping wool from all over the country side, why stop at a Roman era city down a fairly shallow river when you could bring it to the coast. Always thought it might’ve been marriage, but the low tax rates and such make sense now.

Stinkamus

She’s so chungus

Kevin

What the fuck is this accent. It’s like LA valley with generic American, mixed with pompous British pronunciation. It’s all fucked up
