The directors of HBO’s Telemarketers stop by to discuss their doc series. We look into how the Fraternal Order of Policeman’s association is obviously and willingly complicit in a multi-billion dollar telemarketing fraud, the character of New Jersey, the folk hero Patrick J. Pespas, Sam’s legendary media management, and much more!

Brian

Thank fucking god, enjoyed the doc and thought I’d have to listen to Stav to hear them talk about it

bobo tucci

wish patrick pespas was here for this 😭

J. A.

Prescient. Think I got my identity stolen today via the phone.

Guy Guyerson

NJ Nurses strike episode when?

Justin

Fuck yes. As soon as I watched the first episode of this I knew it was Chapo episode worthy. Patrick J. Pespas for President.

Walking Bones

Hello Mr./Mrs. _______, I'm writing this positive review for the Southern Rhode Island Paralyzed Air Force Technician Pantry Fund. 100% of your likes go to feed our boys in beds. Can I expect a like from you, Mr./Mrs. _______?

Golander

Fuck yeah. Loved this series. Friends worked at a call center in Parkersburg WV (JAK i think) that definitely called for "firefighters". Never did that but I spent a few months doing "identity protection" cold calling, which was basic the exact same thing (trying to trick old people on fixed incomes into parting with money for something useless) We weren't that wild but definitely bought drugs there, embezzlement by mgmt was a pretty open secret. I'm glad to know my junkiedar still works, within 3 seconds of pat being on screen and speaking I was like "oh loveable dopester". Method actors, study him

Nolan Deming

Hello sir I’m calling on behalf of the Fraternal Order of Patrick J. Pespas Admirers

Gordon Schmidt

When the guy said Citizens United was the worst Supreme Court decision ever, I bet Matt had to physically stop himself from mentioning Dred Scott

Poppy Chulo

Why come we cain't beat our dicks off in duh libary?

Absolute Unit

holy shit. i live in new jersey near nyc and i get the fraternal order for cops calling me all the time. they dont seem to get the message when i call them pigs

Kyle Petty

🤣 I want to check out the show, have only heard good things both from critics and online. I was cracking up when one of the guys said that America is a generous country, And that these types of scans wouldn't work in Europe because they aren't generous enough 🤣🤣🤣

T

The reveal that Matt worked there too... amazing

NovalisGuy

Lol “Americans are generous” What a doofus

Kyle

OCD gang 😤😤

Damen Irving

Watching this doc rn before listen to the ep. But this is exactly what I imagined nick mullen’s telemarketing career looked like.

plainwrap

Step 1: Give burner phones to homeless people. Step 2: Their script, "Hello, I'm calling on behalf of the No More Homeless People Campaign. Would you like to make a donation to get them off of your streets?" Step 3: Homeless people getting paid.

Demented Avenger

Citizens United isn't even in the bottom 10 of bad SC decisions, maybe not even in the bottom 100

Wilko

Got very frustrated at the end of this interview. Having experienced all this exploitation and police corruption and all you take away is that there's something like a "dark side" of capitalism - as if it was just coincidence that scam artists thrive in this shitty system - or the ludicrous notion that the scams work because "Americans are more generous" after pointing out yourself that a large percentage of Americans worship cops or fear them. And maybe being a ruch country in the world might've something to do with how generous its citizens are... Just silly.

Major bit me

First world countries gonna first world don’t worry too much about it

Laura

Pretty sure this thrives in the US not because we're more generous but because other rich countries actually have robust laws against telemarketing.

christoph.s

Very entertaining episode! Peak American! working as a parasite, scamming people. Then making a entertainment product out of the parasitical activity. Yet also using it as proof why America is number 1, full of generous benevolence.

Poppy Chulo

Like so many problems in the United States, this all boils down to a lack of regulation. Does this happen in the UK or France, or Australia?

drewb

speaking solely for the UK experience here, we do have phone scams but in my experience they usually take the form of the random "please help me mum/dad" texts which try to bait people into sending money to a bank account while pretending to be their child

Lydia Maria Child

Americans are pretty generous...in the right social situation and context. That last part makes all the difference. Tipping is a perfect example. But the specific situation is key here.

Jaime Christley

New Jersey is the Florida of the Northeast

Doug Cartel

you might say they're.....dandy FOPs wonder how many skeletons are sitting in the closet of the National Tactical Officer's Association

jack flowers

not even the worst campaign finance SC decision

Jonathan G

Never knew this ab comme des garçons

Blank

Lol

Drew McGill

No capitalism does such top to bottom lol. Loved the series very much and glad you got them on :)

brodie

Will's cop voice sounds like the halo announcer

Null_null

I hate trying to program Chapo from the replies, but it is getting a bit ridiculous what a net negative this platform has become. And the thing is, we know that at least Matt Christman knows how toxic and stultifying this kind of passive political engagement is--the infotainment horserace shit that they've been doing weeks on end, no real calls to action since the Bernie campaign. Unless they're going to use this show for good and use it to organize--or at the very least elevate important issues and platform people who need a platform (which they've done here and there in the past)--it does nothing but neutralize opposition to capital. And, like I said, they know this. So what does that mean?

Jaime Christley

I too was disappointed when the HBO documentary filmmakers didn't have an adequately bleak view of capitalism, but I'm sure the struggle sessions they were put through after recording set them on the right path.

Chris Wade

I basically never wade into the comments here, but I’m sorry, they’re 100% right here. Americans charitably give at a rate nearly double the next closest country. INDIVIDUAL Americans are insanely generous, and I think it’s precisely because we all innately understand (whether we agree or not, or maybe to subliminally compensate for agreeing with it) that our state will do basically nothing for you, that Americans are so eager to give. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_charitable_donation_as_percentage_of_GDP?wprov=sfti1

Trebor

I worked for the Bremerton Police Officers Association (telemarketing scam) in Olympia WA in 97, they skipped town one day and never paid us our last check. I was 18 and just dropped out of Evergreen College.

Kyle Smyth

Classic American shitheads. Can't help but be won over even when they're saying some of the dumbest things you've ever heard

Of course

Actually, they are generous, in that tortured Puritan charity display way. Americans are known for that. But it's not socialism. So American generosity is irrational, ignorant, easily manipulated, even cruel in its effects.

Kyle Petty

😬🤣 Hey this is awesome didn't mean it to be inflammatory or controversial. To your point, how I interpret "being generous," ties into the general concept of common good, willing to give up something for the sake of society, etc. On an individual level you bet, Americans probably feel like we aren't doing enough as a State so we feel like something has to be done to help those in need. I personally know some people that don't believe in higher taxes, specifically because they believe people getting to choose their own charities is a better and more efficient way to assuage the Welfare State. How I look at it and where I was coming from, is that pretty much all Americans I know (Dems or Republicans) hate the idea of higher taxes. To me, that ties into the concept of being generous. Understanding we are going to give up more of our individual paycheck so that Public Needs can be met. Taxes are seen as a burden and something to be grudgingly done, like it's a waste. There's valid reasons for thinking that under our current context but that's where I was coming from with it. Instead of just trusting a State to take care of all these problems from the beginning, it has to be filtered into an individual choice model, essentially a free market where the problems that need to get taken care of will (because more people will think it's a problem and donate more to it). Like you're tapping into other countries don't feel the need to donate into charity as much because they already believe the State will take care of it. I wasn't saying that people don't individually donate more, just that people don't want a system that theoretically removes the need to be charitable from the beginning. Ton of respect for you, love all the work you do, text has it's limitations which is a shame. With what you're saying we are on the same page, just looking through different specific lenses 😁👍

Kyle Petty

Also Chris Wade "Wading" into the comments 🤣 I guess thats me "being Petty," about Americans generosity or charities 🤣

Maxwell Harkness

i think an underrated part of it is if you donate to them, and get the decal, I feel like people in their minds get to pretend that they're the cops.

Of course

The lib-Chapo interactions are great fun for the listeners. Matt is hyperventilating or maybe just grimacing off-mic with guest lines like "capitalism isn't all bad, this is just the dark side of capitalism"... Thinking of an astrophysics documentary: we're just covering the dark side of black holes, you know, only the part where space-time goes off-the-rails.

Barnabas

Great episode but you gotta laugh at the theory about why this only happens in the US

Evan O'Reilly

Having worked for tips for 8 years, many Americans can be generous but it is NOT the majority. And our whole tipping system is basically just a subsidy for restaurant owners to not have to pay a living wage.

R-Man

I used to work for one of these telemarketing schemes when I was a teenager called the Space Coast Firefighters, they had me speak in a “firefighter” voice. Friend of a friend worked for FOP funding outfit in FL. his daughter died in a hot car death while he was working. Very sad.

plainwrap

Is that counting just people giving $5 to someone outside a grocery store or is it also counting donations to the NRA, Planned Parenthood, the Lincoln Project etc?

lkmewqa

When Chapo police sticker?

Stephen Baynham

It's also true that charity scams and other telemarketing have happened in Europe and those who were responsible actually went to jail, which is why they were largely based in kiev before the war. Germany's solution has been to reject SHAKEN/STIR and just ban inbound international calls from pretending to be domestic entirely. Local telemarketing companies in America have lobbied to prevent that solution here because they want to be able to spoof domestic calls "legally".

C. Andrew

Americans are a dangerous combination of kind, generous, salt of the earth types (you know, morons!) and psychotic scam artist sharks.

Kevin Price

I used to work at a smaller competitor in New Brunswick. They also raised money for the police and the fire fighters and all that. Very very seedy company, two small rooms in a office building

C. Andrew

Not a big fan of these contradictions, Tone.

Will

Due to the fact that im not 6 years old i was able to understand what they meant with the “generosity” point, as kind of a symptom of American consumerism leaving ppl prone to these scams, rather than interpreting it as them saying that the problem with america is that everyone is too nice. Hope the rest of u start to become more normal👍

C. Andrew

They're completely honest in their scam, you can almost feel the glint of pride in their eye. The scam is so incredibly stupid, yet preys on something so core to living in America, and then the trajectory is 'lets make a movie'. We are an amazing people, we need to dazzle, sparkle, and entertain.

C. Andrew

Chris is such a good producer he's captured the tension part of the audio spectrum. Cringe you can feel.

C. Andrew

"There are legitimate police unions. There are great incredible non-profits out there." 🚩🚨🚩🚨🚩🚨

C. Andrew

HBO staff should be, at random intervals, subjected to public question and answer periods in university auditoriums in front of organized cadres.

MEAT CLOWN

🍆💦🍆💦🍆💦

Demented Avenger

End charity. What we know as charity needs to be publicly-funded.

Alex

Plainwrap as far as i can tell, yes it includes all donations - NRA/religious orgs/moron right wing anti-trump groups included

Alex

those are two completely different things, Evan, donating to charity and tipping your waitstaff.

Alex

you guys have no idea how a documentary shown on HBO is actually made/financed lol

Back Bench Pizza LLC

Choosing to just change the meaning of everything the speaker said is fine

Alex

It's funny how everyone that Chapo has on their show has to have perfect leftist beliefs in order for you hogs not to freak the fuck out.

etienne

damn who did the background music for the LDF video, Vektroid?

PraiseTheSun

I wish I could answer one of those scam calls and have turn of century paddy police begging me for money.

Stanlej

Do your own fucking podcast then man this shit helps me not kill myself

Twitch Hunt!

Shouldn't you have tapped out of this podcast during a past purity test struggle session?

Twitch Hunt!

You tell that 14 year old high school dropout who is boss. How dare he not live up to your standards.

Twitch Hunt!

Bitch he was a kid and needed a job. They aren't scammers.

Twitch Hunt!

I called for one of these places for maybe 6 months. I was a broke ass college kid and I needed to pay the rent. It was just as fucked up as they show in the documentary. Tons of convicts working there. A guy was missing one week and sure enough he got picked up for robbing a bank. Just the usual. Half the people were drunk or on drugs. People would harass old people trying to get them to donate. It was a chaotic bizarre tapestry of the human condition. The actual work always gave me an uneasy feeling but it was very true that this was some of the only legit work many people on the fringes of society could get. And that absolutely was a public service. If only society didn't have to rely on scam cop charities to give people gainful employment and purpose.

J Fitz

I worked at a call center like this. Lasted three weeks before I quit but even learned a lifetime of grifting techniques

etienne

pro tip: if someone ever asks you for money on behalf of the cops, say "oh let me guess, you want to sell me a ticket to a police ball?" and then this person is going to respond "I'm sorry, the police have no balls". you have then won this phone call

C. Andrew

Americans are more likely to be rubes. This much is true.

Skwilly

THIS of all things is what makes you very frustrated? Jesus Christ man get a grip.

Chris

My partner and I call them child rapists and child killers, fedsmoker style

etienne

thats epic dude

buttface

the whole dark side of capitalism thing made me not even want to watch their show

Chris

Pro tip, if your state DMV sells those police honor plates/stickers - buy them. Police are absolute gangsters and they are tricked by it. I've been ignored doing so much illegal shit with my car, even got spotted going 50 in a 25 near a middle school and the cop didn't even honk or move.

Luke Wheeler

“Oh this man doesn’t have perfectly aligned political analysis, why even bother” God some of you people are insufferable

Luke Wheeler

Doing 50 in a school zone with cop stickers on your car to avoid getting a ticket actually sounds like a pretty shitty move!

Wilko

You must've confused me with someone else, because I didn't say anything about keeping the podcast pure, neither did I make ANY demands, really. Chapo can invite whomever they like, I'm just saying that as a socialist I find it frustrating that people who could know better still cling to such idealistic notions of this system, that they seem to feel the need to defend it. And that is not me being pedantic. I know socialists love arguing about finer details all the time, but I'm pretty sure that being anti-capitalist is THE bare minimum of being a socialist. Not really a negotiable stance. So, yeah, I'm going to keep getting annoyed at this and every 10 months or so I will feel the urge to express that frustration when a lib comes on. And you're free to whine about that. Isn't that nice?

Reece Coren

these guys rule. watching telemarketers tonight

Paul Delaney

Matt's anecdote about selling tickets to a Beatles cover band to benefit firefighters made me remember that I believe that's a job once held by infamous To Catch a Predator lolcow Lorne Armstrong. I feel sad that I possibly know that. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

christoph.s

What are you talking about? One should try everything to get by before doing something harmful like scamming innocent people is to high of a standard?

buttface

you go watch it then - i have better shit to do honestly should have known when the title said they'd be interviewing an HBO show this one would be pretty lame. the boys are so thirsty for that big network special of their own it's pathetic. how's that for insufferable?

buttface

It's funny no matter what honest criticism fans of the show make there are just as many if not more hogs telling you to shut the fuck up and eat the slop

Jimmy McMillan

Yes solidarity is what we need instead

buttface

this is why i will never go to a live chapo show because the audience would be filled with obsequious and performative dorks exactly like you

buttface

yeah it's bullshit and pretty lame that chapo would even have someone this off brand on their show but I guess they want that HBO special of their own pretty bad

Kyle Petty

Okay I was at work and so I actually clicked on the Wiki article Chris himself provided. It says in the article "However, tax as a proportion of GDP is much higher in some nations. So the relatively low figure for donations for Sweden, for example, does not necessarily mean lower generosity. Perhaps Swedes show their generosity through paying higher taxes which allow better social welfare and one of the most generous international development expenditures." This is exactly what I was originally talking about And I'm using Chris's own source he provided, maybe he should've read it 🤣🤣 The logic goes both ways, So countries with higher donations doesn't necessarily mean higher amounts of generosity. 🤣🤣🤣

Jimmy McMillan

They just sound like a couple of normal dudes who don't interrogate their political views much. Most people are like this

buttface

they are too chicken shit to ever put any skin in the game like they did in 2020 again. they're just riding the gravy train for as long as they can now.

Jimmy McMillan

Most people in America don't identify as socialist dude. When you grow up getting indoctrinated with pro- America, pro-capitalist propaganda it can take a while to purge it. These guys are just non political normies like most people

buttface

ah yes, because "non-political dude bro" really captures what listeners of this podcast come here for "most people" listen to joe rogan if we're going by the numbers. what are you even saying?

J.P. McD.

Praxis is being an annoying little scold online

J.P. McD.

Absolutely love the Chapo listeners who still believe that praxis is being a scold online about podcast guest interviews

buttface

said by a guy with no moral convictions whatsoever

buttface

and how exactly are you any different?

buttface

the chapos and their fan club are all big mad about the (reasonable) criticism they're getting in the comments on this one. i agree with you 100%.

buttface

america the generous

Kyle Petty

Yeah I mean my first reaction was to be starstruck/Fanboy because I'm such a huge fan of the Chapo Guys, I've listened to Hell of President's specifically like four times. I see Chris Wade's name and immediately think, "Well what do I know? Chris obviously knows more." Thing is, Im riding the bus for 1.5 hours (when it's a 20 minute drive but we won't fund transit) to be a substitute teacher even though I have a Master's (because we refuse to adequately fund education, would rather overload current teachers to save a buck). Like there's these very real examples, that are directly hitting me in the face on how this country is extremely selfish and ungenerous. 🤣 What do I care about millionaires/billionaires and people with disposable income happening to donate a tiny portion of their wealth to non-profits that probably don't actually do anything and they can just use for tax write offs or places to hoard their money?

Chris

That's my point. I was the only car on the road and it was nearly midnight - we made eye contact even. The plates work. (Some states sell official plates, others do this sticker nonsense like in NJ)

Chris

I did actual field testing with cop plates and shared my knowledge here only to be spat on by moral scolds.

Chris

Omg stop

Jaime Christley

Shut up idiot. I see you making your rounds, replying with your little comments. you’re no different than anyone else here.

Chris

Just wait until you have to do wage labor, this call center stuff sounds a bit extreme but in reality every job works that way in America. You are expected to gut every customer in every field and are punished for not doing so.

Chris

You could also argue they're right because CU paved a road back to the antebellum era. If you make a choice that leads back to de facto Jim crow shit being legalized, yeah that is pretty low.

Chris

Finally, someone here talking sense

Chris

It's also pretty dumb to take something at exact face value so that you can feel better about yourself even though he explained what he meant. People like to help, they like the idea of being helpful, so the angle in this industry is manipulating that dynamic.

Chris

You're an insane person, I'm sorry but someone had to say it. What the fuck is with these essays?

Chris

You assuming that it isn't obvious to everyone already is pretty weird. What about chapo would make you think they suddenly forgot what capitalism is? The levels of schizophrenia in this chat are breaking the glass on my Geiger counter.

Chris

What are you 8? Do you think there's a decent way to work in the private sector here? I've formed union organizing committees while looking over my shoulder for management and class traitors, there's no such thing as not scamming people. Cancer test lab? Taking advantage of sick people. Work at Papa John's? Selling diabetes backed by a racist. Work at a dealership? You're lying, scamming and outmaneuvering crazy people all day.

Chris

Let's be honest that shit is also super funny.

Chris

Either go form a union or head to the country side with a rifle, Mao - I bet you won't do either yet you bitch and bitch and bitch

Chris

This episode really brought out some sick radlib shit in people's hearts.

Kyle Petty

You don't have to be sorry. Trust me, I know I'm insane. If you think it's bad for you, how do you think I feel having to deal with my head all day? 🤣 For my friends? Coworkers? My dear sweet mother? 🤣

Kyle Petty

Actually the fact that I'm legally allowed in public education says a lot about our system

Clint

Just watched the first episode, good shit

NovalisGuy

What are you talking about.

Clint

Just stop listening then

Dan Z

Just started watching it and immediately it's very meh

lambchop

you’ve been posting in here for hours. you should start a podcast

SoldierBlue

I read an interview of a Russian hacker and when they asked him why they target Australians he said because Australians are the most stupid people in the world and have money anyway. I guess it’s the same for Americans

Liam Dakin

Does anyone have the link to the clip that “Legal” wouldn’t let them play?

AKorgar

"I have better shit to do" lol no you don't

AKorgar

"i have better shit to do"

AKorgar

Well buttface, perhaps you should just consider shutting the fuck up and eating the fucking slop

AKorgar

"said by a guy with no moral convictions whatsoever" oh yeah it turns out the new Che Guevara is some fucking freak on patreon comment threads named 'buttface' Get it straight fucker, you're an absolute degenerate, unlike the people you keep scolding, you think that being an obnoxious little toad on a comment thread for a podcast's patreon is somehow constructive. There are people on Death Row who aren't as sick in the fucking head as you. Get a GRIP.

AKorgar

I don't think you're insane Kyle I think you're just cringe

AKorgar

Americans are generous because they've been conditioned to think that charity is how problems get addressed. Conservatives are actually more likely to donate to charity than lefties are, because conservatives believe stridently that charity is how things get done. Lefties are objectively right in that social programs are a far far better way of addressing issues, but that doesn't mean they're not donating less to charity. This is just an objective fact, there's a lot of studies done to this effect, and it actually makes a lot of sense.

AKorgar

"ah yes, because "non-political dude bro" really captures what listeners of this podcast come here for" buttface is mad because Chapo isn't doing enough to salve his need for political consciousness, it means he can't just sit on his ass and listen to a podcast and feel like he's somehow contributing by just passively listening. This is a problem for him because he's not going to do anything else

Poppy Chulo

This doesn't count as the regular Friday episode does it? Edit: Wait it's Thursdays that episodes are usually posted. My bad.

AKorgar

@buttface nobody wants you to attend any kind of live event, you would be insufferable

christoph.s

I am sorry, I guess I did not know how much scamming is an integral part of American identity. And being allergic to any kind of moral debate around it. Probably bc as you said in then US you can’t get a job that isn’t a scam. In other places it is just looked down upon.

Major bit me

Everything is very meh these days

AbeLinkin

All the commenters saying that the only jobs in America are scams are pathetic. Maybe that’s true for them. Of course on some level we’re all complicit in America but I wouldn’t say that when I was a dishwasher, ice cream scooper, intern, paralegal, or affordable housing preservation analyst that I was just straight ripping people off. You guys need to find something better and not assume that everyone is scamming like you.

AbeLinkin

“Dark side of capitalism” made me die a little inside. Oh well. I deal with people with far worse politics on a daily basis, but it does take a little bit of the edge off of the show. Before I get jumped for saying it I will admit that it’s highly unlikely that I’ll be coming up with anything better than what they produced

Real praxis is defending my parasocial multi-millionaire friends from the mildest criticism.

AKorgar

How do you guys survive in modern society when you can't even hear libs say their dumb thoughts without "dying a little inside"

buttface

you replied to EVERY SINGLE ONE of my comments from yesterday. do you think the chapos are going to mail you a medal and invite you to do ketamine with them after the next live show for being a good little boy? fucking pathetic man - i have secondhand embarrassment for you.

AKorgar

"Twat" well now I know why you're such a miserable little creep, you're from the UK

AKorgar

@buttface being the loudest malcontent in a comment section does not make you any kind of a free thinker or a truth teller it just makes you an annoying little freak

AKorgar

Honestly what I find so odious about you is not that you don't like the show or that you're complaining about it - there's always some dipshit in the comments who thinks that everyone wants to hear about how unhappy he is about the latest episode as if anyone gives a shit, and it's super easy to ignore all of them. You on the other hand - you're the one obnoxious little creep who demanded attention, just posting all over the god-damn place, making out like you're such a leftist stalwart and you're just so disgusted by the podcast and how hard it falls short of your vaunted standards. Admit it, you little NEET scumbag, you wanted attention, and that's exactly what I gave you, and now you're fucking thrilled. Another human being acknowledged you for a little while, you absolute twitter-brained goblin. You're welcome!

I liked the interview. They seem normal, unlike literally any of us, myself included.

Thinking of pivoting to being nice to buttface. Deferential even. Whompst amongst us hasn’t posted through it.

AKorgar

Sometimes when I'm giving trolls shit I stop and think about how I'm probably talking shit at some 14 year old kid who's baby brain literally hasn't even finished forming yet and I feel kinda dumb and wrong but on the other hand, oh well.

Jaime Christley

I’ve been logged on since 1991, nothing has really changed. I’m watching a lot of people post on BlueSky things like “NOW we can put the trolls in the rear view mirror” and all I can do is think to myself “yeah gl with that”

J.P. McD.

imagining a temporary Felix fixation “in old cartoons they ate two foot tall sandwiches with a toothpick and olive on top”

This hits hard, worked at a call center for a bank after college, Matt's statements are too real. Wasn't built for it

Christopher Price

The second the hogs have to think critically about what the guest is saying they freak out, cf. Norm Finkelstein. And it changes over time too. In 2018 the sub would have called ettergenmenwhatever a lib but the zoomer hogs love him.

Dustin Sparks

I just about died at the end of this episode because they played that hard rock bit from the FOP training video they were making fun of earlier on and it’s from a band I really like :(

Mangomoosh

this ep made me remember a summer job in 2002 in Fort Wayne IN. The citizens action coalition. They would drop us of and we went door to door asking for money to stop the transport of nuclear waste in Indiana, on its way to Yucca Mountain. We would get to keep 50% of everything we got. I remember getting a handwritten check from a old lady for 20 bucks and thinking what the fuck am I doing then the older dudes were stoked cause the got 400$ that was so fucked up.

Poppy Chulo

Many of the jobs out there are predatory in nature. That's an inevitable part of this stage of capitalism. You're being pedantic.

Poppy Chulo

Your other post just above this one is admonishing people for complaining about so many of the jobs available being scam based. How do you reconcile these two posts with being logically consistent?

Thief of Kings

The dark side of capitalism is just capitalism.

I did this this one night in Sioux Falls. Out of a room in the same Ramada where I was bussing tables in the “dining room”. I was about 14. It was FOP and I think there were rodeo tickets involved. And there were definitely hardened felons with thousand stares in there.

Worked at CDG in Parkersburg WV and many other call centers in that area. Was the hiring manager for awhile. Tons of drugs went into my nose for people to not get in trouble for having drugs. It was the shitbaggest of times

Chapo has been on a run of quite good eps. Eventually they’d trip and eat a little shit. They’ll pick themselves up soon

thank you, oracle

THEKILLERWHALE

Jesus. Telemarketing at the Ramada Inn in Sioux Falls. That has to be rock bottom.

THEKILLERWHALE

Unless there's a Ramada Inn in Yankton.

I worked for a few days making calls for the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association in like 2006. I got fired because I didn't want to ask people for money. I was certain it was a scam anyways, but I was 18, I needed gas money.

Reece Coren

it was so good I watched it twice. everybody go watch telemarketers

Violet

Damn, apparently the comments are shook that Hollywood libs are annoyingly pollyannaish about the US. You live in a deradicalized society, of course the predominant voices in that society are not radical. It's almost like there's some sort of system of... Creating agreement... Yeah, creating agreement! It's almost like there's some sort of system of creating agreement that selects the voices that are heard based on what they believe in the first place! Obviously the only way to confront such a society is to not use the more radicalizing elements of that deradicalized society to try and radicalize people! We wouldn't want normies (who are, of course, the absolute worst people in the universe) to say what they think! Not every guest is going to have escaped false consciousness. You live in a society mired in false consciousness. We can presume everyone here knows false consciousness when they hear it and aren't going to be swayed by a guest expressing it. Take the tools you can from the guests and use them... To own people on the internet, which is, of course, the only important thing you can do.

If you don't want to deal with hair trigger anxiety and paranoid skepticism than you aren't fit for the hog trade

etienne

so funny that half the comment section is like THEIR HATE IS NOT PURE ENOUGH RHEEEEEE and the other half is like "wow holy shit that happened to my buddy jeff!"

Null_null

Worse is calling someone irony poisoned. Even if you do it in the most strained terms imaginable.

Null_null

Lol and you said cringe.

William

William

Lol I remember when I commented on chapo posts

Eric Adams

Nah it was a boring 1hr long ad

Tristan

You are one dumb mf’er

Tristan

Ya no chance they just liked the show and now have the connections to get them on and chat about it

Jed Levin

In the ‘80s I worked for a place like this for a couple of weeks, but it was boring because it was legit. It was in NYC, and the clients were mostly involved in politics. CTTOI, I was only around 21 or so, so the more hardened types might have been up to some shenanigans.

C. Andrew

Yeah but that's not fun, raising money for cops by preying on people's deepest fears or scamming meema and peepa into fighting Antifa Thugs so some guys and do coke is hilarious. Arguably working at Home Depot is a bit fucking different.

Good brain haver

Love when one of your interviewees is audibly calling in from a moving vehicle. Extremely good, nice to listen to.

Good brain haver

Okay, I listened more. I can say that this is the worst episode since the boys interviewed Rod Blagoyavich.

AKorgar

Was it Chomsky who said the US is the most propagandized society on Earth (Edit: no Caitlin Johnstone)

Tyler Sutherland

Pat and these guys should go on Michael & Us, since they all share common bonds towards Michael Moore!

M Varnzo

It was grim. But there’s a Hotel 6 across the street so not quite rock bottom.
