Hi all,

First video in the ongoing Black Templars army series.

Sadly it hasn't started quite how I had hoped, but plenty of things learned and I'm raring to have another crack.

Thanks as ever for all the support!

Henry

I feel for you Henry - putting all that work in and then it not turning out how you wanted is such a downer. Without knowing exactly what’s in your mind’s eye it’s difficult to make suggestions. I have a personal hatred of those ‘extra shield on the shoulder pad’ thingys (don’t know what they’re called or what they’re for) but not the way you’ve rendered that one; I just don’t like them full stop. I suppose it could be argued that it draws the eye away from the head and adds bling that’s not as Templar-ish as the other bits… Dunno. Hope it goes more smoothly for you next time - it’s a great project for sure.

Hey Henry really loved this video, I don't think this project has got off to a bad start, maybe it's just more a step to finding the style you want. As you said the armour, the white and the gold are all what you wanted so it is certainly almost very nearly there. Getting all the colour right is more than 90% of the whole model. If I was to offer some feedback it would be. The templars are certainly the mad, religious zealots of the space marines, each one a crusading knight, I think each model could lean more into this. More purity seals, more heraldry, more flames, open helmets, hair, maybe a beard even. This makes me also think colour, I think the purity seals could be a more bright red, and the parchment whiter, the armour is very black. If there is another point I'd say if they're going to be so black then maybe the bases do need to be more vivid or even alive, maybe some grass even just to offset all the black a bit. If the bases need to be plain then maybe a red or other colour needs to be added to the models white and black.

I am going to resist the urge to strip all my black templars and repaint the black and white like this! I wonder if blue verdigris would be more harmonious with your blue/black armour and orange basing. Agree with you about the warm yellow too. Looking forward to the next attempt.

Francis Mahon

I think it looks fantastic Henry tbh. But I do look forward to see what improvements you have decided upon.

I agree with you; Henry the Crux Terminatus just doesn't feel quite right. Though I think it just needs to go brighter, not so much warmer. Though, what a mini looks like in the hand and then on a screen can be vastly different. The other thing that caught my eye is the helmet it's not quite as "clean" as the shoulder pads and has a dirtier feel to it maybe from when the brown oil wash was applied. It may just benefit from a couple of quick small highlights to bring it back into line with the shoulder pads.

First, this looks fantastic man, really. It has a very strong BT aesthetic. All of the modeling changes you've made are tasteful and great. I'm an art director for my day job, so I'm going to share some feedback, but please keep this in the spirit of "if I had to make a critique of this thing I love, here are my thoughts". I think it's 95% there honestly - The Black is outstanding, nailed it. - This may be controversial, but the white is too bright. I think if all of the white elements were actually brought down to a light neutral grey it would harmonize better. Any light grey that sits next to black, will read as white to the eye. It will look more realistic and gel with your military modeling sensibilities. Darker elements like the Crux sitting on top of the white will harmonize better. (Maybe this is just how it looks on camera versus in the hand, I admit that). - This model's color has a few too many colors going on, which is leading to some visual noise. The white has warm shading, the black cool highlights, the gold has green undertones, the purity seal is purple, the base is orange... it's all too much together. I'd attempt to simplify and remove some hues, in order to create something more harmonious. Possibly take another look at the hues John Blanche leaned into. - I'd consider making the purity seal red instead of purple. The ribbon treatment though, is perfection. Ok that's it! I love you guys, stay strong!

On the silver, just a suggestion, but you might test a reikland fleshshade wash? I do it on silvers frequently, and I really like the grim, worn (and warm!) feeling it creates.

Sam Dapper

My only critique would be pulling the backup banner/icon from the Heresy Preator and putting it on the back, it sort of no longer reads to me eye with that awesome terminator silhouette and the brassy/gold up there just kind of sets the temperature of the model. Individually it looks fantastic but that’s more of a design decision. That’s a highly uneducated opinion just how the model reads to my eye.

David

I think it looks fantastic and wouldn’t have much more to offer beyond stylistic preferences. I would second trying something like Reikland or Darkoath over silvers to give the metal a worn look. Looking forward to hearing more about the base, it really does remind me of the artwork!

Nathan Cartwright

I personally love it! Gives me John Blanche feels especially the gold and weathering. I often get this disappointed feeling from black schemed models…. I don’t know why, but black doesn’t seem to bring out the best in armour shaped models. These seem to lean towards the eavy metal style so the clinical edge highlighting makes the black stand out from panel to panel on the armour.

Steve

really looking forward to a Blanche orange base recipe

David Muniz

Can I ask which specific metal colors were use for the metal in the guns? Thanks!
