Jake had very few creatures that he really didn’t like. Not necessarily due to anything logical, but just because they didn’t vibe with him. His most hated foe was no doubt the evil mushrooms of the multiverse, who all deserved to be exterminated or thrown into alchemy cauldrons and refined into something actually useful.

There were other types of creatures Jake very much didn’t like, though. One of those was mosquitoes. Nobody liked mosquitoes, and Jake feared the day Vesperia invited him to a friendly get-together with a True Royal from whatever cursed Lineage mosquitoes belonged to.

He had a few others, but one type of creature Jake had never been a fan of was spiders. Why? Jake really didn’t know. He wasn’t afraid of them, and he knew that logically, spiders tended to be quite helpful creatures, even assisting in dealing with the aforementioned mosquitoes. However, he still didn’t like them, maybe because of some horror movie he’d seen as a kid or something like that. He really didn’t know and had never really cared to explore his reason. All he knew was that the second he saw the creature pointed out by the Shaman, he instantly felt the desire to burn it with fire... or obliterate it with arcane energy. It also didn’t help this creature’s case that it was ugly as sin.

Using Identify, he also confirmed it was indeed a spider.

[Arachnec Deathstalker – lvl 388]

It was a spider with a name very similar to a race known as Arachne, that Jake already had prior knowledge of, but regular arachne were very much not undead. Instead, they were spider-women of sorts, with half-spider and half-humanoid bodies. They were also fairly powerful monsters, with a fair number of them across the multiverse.

Arachnec were, from the looks of it, very much the same, except they were fully undead and not really as humanoid as the pictures Jake had seen of arachne. Arachne were even known to nearly always take full humanoid forms, and, as a fully female race, often copulated with enlightened races. All in all, Jake had nothing against them as they weren’t really spiders. Spider-like, sure, but not actually spiders.

This Arachnec was a cursed creature that was neither a regular spider nor an arachne. It had a lower body like a spider's and an upper body that was definitely not a spider's, but Jake hesitated to call it humanoid.

Its upper body was a collection of bones stitched together with spiderwebs. There was no visible head, and it had five long, spindly arms that went in odd directions. The rest of its body looked like a spider halfway through decay, leaving more bone than flesh visible. Its eight legs were all spear-like appendages that pierced into the ground as it walked, and a strong miasma was emanating from its body at all times. Jake estimated the creature to be about seven meters long and five meters tall, making it relatively large, but not overly big.

“Is it... sentient?” Jake asked the Shaman as they floated far above the spreading land of death beneath them. The Shaman had summoned a barrier to help hide them a while ago, allowing them to remain undetected, but Jake had also used his own Unseen Hunter while ensuring the frogs could still see him.

“Yes, they were highly intelligent, and while you only see one right now, others are no doubt nearby,” the Shaman said, his eyes darting around as if he wanted to spot another Arachnec to prove his point.

Jake released a Pulse and confirmed that just outside of his Sphere of Perception, two nearly identical-looking Arachnec were moving together, and even further inside the spreading land of death, he saw dozens more. This land of death spread incredibly far into the distance, meaning there were probably more out of his detection range.

“Do they have settlements and such?” Jake questioned.

“They do, but they were hidden underground, and there shouldn’t be a nest here,” the Shaman explained. “If there were one here, or if they tried to make one, the village would have already sent elites to exterminate them. Perhaps the Oracle herself would have moved. No, this is just a small forward group of Arachnec here to gain experience by creating miasma and absorbing it.”

“Sounds classically undead,” Jake muttered, this really being the MO of most undead creatures throughout the multiverse. They often grew by spreading death and absorbing the resulting miasma. An efficient method, but one that made a lot of enemies, which was why the Risen instead created domains that automatically produced death affinity energy for them all to absorb, rather than having to go around destroying life to create it.

“You also have creatures like these outside the Boundary?” the Shaman asked curiously.

“Exactly like this? I’m not sure, but probably,” Jake shrugged. He wouldn’t be surprised if Arachnec were a race that already existed elsewhere in the multiverse, but one could never know. “As for undead creatures in general? Oh yeah, plenty of those.”

“The Arachnec do have the ability to raise the dead and create minions of those they’ve slain, which is another reason we consider them enemies,” the Shaman said, for the first time looking visibly angry. “A sacrilegious act that does not allow the spirit to rest nor return to the Ancestral Spirit Pool.”

Jake nodded, seeing the seriousness of the Shaman. He kind of wanted to ask more about what the Venusians believed happened after death and what this Ancestral Spirit Pool was, but he held back and instead made a gesture he was sure the frog would soon come to appreciate.

Holding out a hand, his bow appeared in it, eliciting a surprised look from the Shaman.

“A space bag?” the frog asked with surprise.

“We call it spatial storage, and they can come in many forms. Mine is a necklace,” Jake answered.

“Such useful tools are incredibly rare here, in large part due to how difficult it is to procure the materials to produce one,” the Shaman shared as he also stared at Jake’s bow. “And what is that? Some form of weapon?”

Jake’s first reaction was to think that the B-grade frog was messing with him, but he quickly realized that it was entirely possible that this frog had never seen a bow before or had any knowledge of what it was. Still, the question took him by surprise, as It wasn’t as if bows had a complex form, and it wouldn’t be surprising if even a random Minor World had developed bows independently of the rest of the multiverse, especially with Records bleeding through.

Then again, the Venusians didn’t exactly have bodies constructed for wielding bows with their webbed hands and whatnot. Sure, they could have made their own modified versions, but they probably had other means of attacking at range. Such as using magic of different sorts.

Thus, after briefly being taken by surprise at the question, Jake nodded.

“Yes, my preferred weapon of choice is a bow. And rather than telling you what it’s used for, allow me to demonstrate,” Jake said as he motioned towards the frogs. “I would retreat a little and stay out of detection range of the Arachnec. Don’t worry, my own stealth skill will keep me hidden.”

“Very well,” the Shaman nodded. “We will move back, but shall remain on alert in case you need our assistance. Also, let me warn you: the Deathstalker variants are quick and deadly, so be extra careful and try to exploit their inferior defensive prowess. Finally, while damaging them is easy, truly slaying one may prove difficult, as you will need to exhaust its energy before it can be slain for good. Due to that, focusing on its limbs to reduce mobility may-”

“Thanks for the warnings, but I’m aware of the traits of the undead,” Jake said, finding it a bit endearing that the Shaman was so nervous for him, but really, he didn’t need these warnings. “Though I will dare venture, the fight is over a lot faster than you can predict. So, please, just sit back and enjoy.”

The Shaman looked at Jake skeptically as he nevertheless gave a reluctant nod before retreating away alongside the four other Venusians. All of them already had their weapons drawn and seemed ready to jump in and help the moment Jake found himself in trouble, which was nice of them.

In their defense, Jake was just a newly evolved B-grade. From their point of view, he was definitely biting off more than he could chew by wanting to fight a being roughly thirty levels higher than himself. They had no way of knowing that Jake was a freak who, based on how powerful the Deathstalker felt, could have perhaps even beaten the B-grade before evolving.

And now that he had evolved? Well... the result would speak for itself.

Under the watchful gaze of three frogs, Jake allowed them to witness everything that went into his opening attack. Rather than do it inside his quiver, Jake designed and created his Protean Arrow right in front of himself, making it a very basic one. He saw no need to put too much thought into it, but just made it an arrow full of destructive arcane energy. As for what poison to use, Jake didn’t really have much choice, and he hadn’t crafted anything useful after evolving, so his best toxin currently was, honestly, just his blood. Which was exactly what he chose to use.

Once the full spear-sized arrow was complete, Jake gave it a final coating of poison before willing it to turn around and point toward the Arachnec below. Grasping the arrow, Jake applied the effects of Penetrating Arrow before he nocked it. With the arrow on the string, Jake took a deep breath before unleashing Arcane Awakening as his body was bathed in destructive arcane energy.

Jake went for the offensive variant, increasing those stats by 50%. He had considered going for the full 60% to all stats right away, but held himself back, which was probably a good choice. The strain from boosting skills, especially one like Jake’s, was a lot more prominent right after an evolution, and he couldn’t use it as liberally as he had towards the end of C-grade.

He did have the advantage of Arcane Supremacy and an already extreme resistance to his own arcane affinity, which was frankly the reason why Jake’s boosting skill worked in the first place. In either case, 50% should be good enough for now, and based on the reactions from the Venusians, they already found it more than impressive.

Channeling Arcane Powershot, yet a second eruption of energy warped the area around Jake, and if not for his Unseen Hunter, the Deathstalker would have definitely seen him by now. Unfortunately for the undead, it remained unaware of the hunter even as he fully charged his Arcane Powershot.

All his other passive skills were already in full effect, and Hunter’s Mark was placed as Jake took final aim. He still had Sight of the Boundless Horizon as well as Event Horizon in store should his opening shot fail. Something he had a hard time seeing happen.

With a final exhale, Jake loosed the arrow as it erupted towards the Arachnec Deathstalker. The B-grade was busy consuming the remnants of life energy from a struggling cactus-like plant as the arrow arrived, hidden by Stealth Attack until the very last moment.

The innate danger sense of the B-grade spider was triggered far too late. In the very final moments, the Deathstalker’s body erupted with miasmic energy, only for all that energy to freeze from a well-timed Primal Gaze, not allowing the B-grade to even attempt to defend itself.

Jake and the five Venusians watched as the Protean Arrow tore through the skeletal “humanoid” portion of the Arachnec Deathstalker first, obliterating the bones as the attack continued down into the decaying spider body. There, it didn’t slow down in the slightest but destroyed everything in its path, sending out a shockwave of destructive arcane energy through the B-grade’s body.

Finally, the arrow exited through the bottom of the Arachnec, exploding the second it hit the ground in an eruption of destructive arcane energy that tore through the spider from below. Jake watched as much of his prey’s body was instantly disintegrated within the newly created crater on the island, destroying the surrounding land as fissures formed for nearly a kilometer in every direction. Something that made Jake click his tongue.

Sloppy control, he noted to himself, finding that too much of the Protean Arrow’s energy was wasted on destroying the environment and not killing his target. Sure, the vast majority still went into his prey, but way too much was still wasted, showing that Jake still lacked control post-evolution. He didn’t even have the excuse of having used Arcane Awakening on full power, which did introduce some instability into his attacks, courtesy of the boosting skill’s unstable nature.

His lack of control also showed him that the terrain in this Minor World was far more durable than on Earth or any other “regular” planet. If he had done the same thing back home, the fissures created would have spread for dozens of kilometers at a minimum, while here, they only extended about a kilometer in every direction. Everything had no doubt been strengthened and refined by the constant exposure to potent toxic energy that was even capable of nurturing the growth of B-grades and perhaps even A-grades.

Oh, yeah, besides comments on the environment, the result of Jake’s attack on the Deathstalker was as expected. For a few moments, its decaying flesh wriggled as it struggled against the destructive arcane energies, finding itself on the losing end. Jake’s poison didn’t really end up doing much, showing that the sheer resistance to toxins of these creatures was quite impressive.

Not that it mattered, as even without the poison, the Protean Arrow, coupled with everything else, had been more than enough for Jake’s very first “fight” in B-grade to end exactly how one would expect, given he hadn’t even faced a mid-tier B-grade or a powerful variant.

You have slain [Arachnec Deathstalker – lvl 388] – Bonus experience earned for killing an enemy above your level

Whatever remained of the B-grade faded away into miasma that seeped into the ground, expanding the domain of death further. Even in death, these Arachnecs were a scourge, it seemed.

Through a Pulse, he also saw several other Arachnec in the distance react to the death of their kin, meaning they had either detected the energy from Jake’s attack or noticed that one of their own had been slain. None of them moved towards Jake and the others, though, so they evidently didn’t care that much that one of them had died for good.

Looking toward the Shaman, Jake shrugged. “You’re right, Deathstalkers are pretty squishy.”

The Shaman just stared back at Jake, and he saw the four other Venusians around him now visibly on guard, all three warriors clenching their weapons tightly. It wasn’t hard to see why.

So far, they had likely operated under the assumption that, as a low-level B-grade, Jake wouldn’t be a threat to the five of them if he decided to do a one-eighty and turn hostile. Now, that assumption had definitely been challenged, as Jake had given them a glimpse of what he was capable of.

Fortunately, the Shaman still seemed somewhat relaxed, looking more impressed than anything as he switched between staring at Jake and the crater with only a few scattered bones of the Deathstalker remaining.

“That... did not proceed as I’d expected,” the Shaman muttered aloud as he focused on Jake. “While the very thought frightens me, do tell: are all humans as powerful as you? Or are you a special variant?”

“Something like the latter,” Jake clarified, finding it a little funny to be referred to as a variant. Then again, enlightened races weren’t a thing in this world, so it wasn’t surprising.

“Truly, I have been enlightened today,” the Shaman slowly nodded as he seemed to consider if he even wanted to before asking another question. “I find myself hesitant to even ask, but did that attack you just unleashed take a huge toll on you, or...?”

Jake smiled as he looked towards the field of death spreading into the horizon. “How about we find another Arachnec and find out?”

Stevean Bozek

I think he pulled a fast one on us. We were all expecting mushroom zombies so he zagged when we expected the zig.

Cinaeda

was quite certain it would be undead mushrooms, but yes... I can see why he'd react like he did in the previous chapter :D it sounds like he'll have a lot of fun the next chapter. cool new monster variant, too! thanks for this, was fun

John Durrett

Jakes Spidey senses were tingling - but for very different reasons. :) tyftc

Phallusar

Unfortunately Zogarth made several chapters about Jake failing to do basic post evolution care of his gear when he evolved to C-Grade, and an entire arc about getting appropriate replacements. Really hammered it home about how it was just basic lack of care that isn't even hard to do, the whole humiliation conga. And now Jake has evolved again. Maybe none of his gear needs it, maybe he's just continuing to be negligent, maybe Zogarth forgot or doesn't care.

Kt-x

Thanks for the chapter

TFTC :) Small mental problem but..spiders dont have bones they have an exoskeleton powered by hydraulic "muscles" so decaying ones wouldnt have visible bones :| Suggested edits: "*focused* on its limbs to reduce" should be "focusing" "*exploding* the second it hit the ground in an *explosion* of destructive" repetitive. Eruption, detonation, blast, surge lots of choices. " now *visible* on guard" should be "visibly" "I ** find myself hesitant to even ask" missign word "also" since you used "I find myself..." earlier in the sentence. Adding also makes it seem more deliberate.

Atra mentis

Spirit of man takes care of the stat issue, and bow powercharge durability is a far-away issue—if it ever even becomes one—with his new bow. There’s a lot less NEED to upgrade gear, even if would still be very helpful

Frosgods

He did take care of void katar and armor, I'm not sure if bow needs anything with its origins and being almost brand new

tomtom

He kinda just dont need it, his bow gets stronger with him and he doesnt really need stats in the equipments anymore, while he could get better gear with better effects its not as important as before

Phallusar

I'm talking about his failure to unbind and rebind his gear the first time around, not stats.

Xander

The only thing that broke was his bow and his new bow evolves with him so thats not an issue. Jake is also getting his void katar replaced with an upgraded version and has several disposable replacements in case whatever he is currently using breaks. His boots have been upgraded, Jakes necklace has no bearing on fighting, what else...his gloves are reinforced with his scales his bracers amplify his shields so are strong enough, Jake got a ring from the prima event and has to use that since its how he will get out of the world his quiver just has to be a dimensional pocket so thats fine. All of this was mentioned like a week? 2 weeks ago?

Gabriel Craig

Are you even bothering to really read to story? Because that comment makes one wonder. Considering his new spirit of man skill which means upgraded gear is largely irrelevant except for his weapons which he either already upgraded (the bow) or is in the process of upgrading via Arthur. Boots just got buffed, cloak is good and randomly running around trying to find nifty effects on random other pieces is, as explained in the text, largely a waste of time.

micah Hogan

GeneralBlack What does this mean?

Jeroen Turkstra

Tyftc Lmao how wrong we all were. I salute the few who guessed differently 🫡

C0bra$

Thank u for the story

NovaZero

Frankly, he just needs the slot filled and the utility function to enable stuff. The stats no longer matter, though I imagine it would be a minute alleviation his stamina which to begin with us negligible.

Ben Cox

Tyftc, having never seen a bow Jake has decided to preach about the one true religion and path. PERCEPTION IS THE BEST STAT AND BOWS ARE THE BEST RANGED WEAPON.

NovaZero

In fact, given how his Spirit of Man works he would be passively infusing his equipment with his records.

Wow one shot is all it took. Jake is OP and I love it. Thanks Zogarth

Epends on the spider. I have a particular despisal of large web weavers, mostly from walking outside and 5 minutes later turning to walk inside only to have a spider decide the front door was a great place to start their web.

Don't forget the smelly pot! It ALMOST broke...kind of. It was was damaged is what I'm saying lol. So it will need an upgrade/maintenance before he can go full tilt on his alchemy. Totally agree with the rest of it!

Im predicting he becomes the next being Jake helps with Jake Juice.

What a wild trip these Venusian’s are having with Jake. It’s like if we found a weird thing in the woods, it seem friendly and weaker than us. Had a nice tea party, went for a walk and then saw it nuke a grizzly bear with a back hand 😂

Daniel

Where is the fun of going on a shop trip for gear that doesn’t matter. Only three things matter the necklace, boots, and glove. I don’t care for the umbra cloak, but still he didn’t get that in the shop.

definitelynotbrjenness

Jake is somewhere he might only be able to escape from by the system pulling him out. Would have been nice to have picked up some gear that with fancy tricks before the event... just in case. Very Jake of him.

djthomp

Spiders can be neat but undead spiders with a silk and bone humanoid-ish upper body definitely need to be purged. Arachne sound cool though.

Colin

He’s certainly a candidate

definitelynotbrjenness

Idea for Jake's amulet upgrade... a semi escape skill allowing him to set a location that his amulet always gives him access to. He chooses his garden in nevermore. Unrelated thought... is there a rule known as something like... chekov's red herring?

Don't describe the drapes in great detail unless the drapes are important. However, anything can be important if it distracts your patreons from guessing what is going to happen next.

Why 150 levels for b like with c. I thought it would be higher like how GFEDBC all got higher

Cyranosaurus

After how this whole Venus thing started, this was the chapter I needed. We know at some point there’s gonna be a major issue and likely the system event saves Jake’s butt, still a few chapters establishing he’s still a bad ass feels good. Although I would love if he can be full diplomat and open this place up to the wider, Multiverse and make Miranda proud😂

Timothy Spradlin

I was assuming mushroom undead but commented on how everyone was guessing the same thing, and said it would be funny if we were all wrong, does that get a salute?

Matthew Hay

It is never mentioned that the spider body contains bones, only the upper humanoid skeleton made of bones and webbing.

Vex

Its an alchemist amulet, i dont think that'd fit. Nor would jake want it to do that, he already refused to keep the legendary escape token from the treasure hunt. I think something more along the lines of allowing ingredients to become more potent. Even that doesn't really feel right though.

Colton Horton

Huh. I wonder if "I find myself enlightened today" is a portent for what is to come......🤔

Willd

It plays perfectly that they aren’t enlightened races which is why it keeps getting brought up. I can’t remember if that’s been layed out as a necessity or not but feel like it’s a decent theory if nothing else

Jake’s Crusade against the evil mushrooms is the funniest part of this book.

I just had a thought and feel pretty dumb not realizing it sooner. Everyone we know got a pretty big upgrade in late C-grade: Silphy insight from the Vortex Pinnacle, Fallen King the Golden rework and Sword Saint a Transcendence upgrade. We can even add Dina who got lessons from Yggdrasil and Vesperia with her new Royal Guard. Add to this a System Event which allows all of them and quite a few never-before-seen geniuses from other galaxies to face against each other. We were denied in D-grade and got the Treasure Hunt instead, but could this be the setup of a Tournament arc?

tournament would be okay, but i'd like some political bs. and a faction forming war. doesn't fit what I suspect will be the theme though. unless when you die, you get reborn with a choice to change something about your class. funny if a bunch choose changes adding supporter of jake thane to class.

82nd dumb idea of the day: fanatics try to create a church of the primal hunter. jake wants nothing to do with it. miranda refuses to help because she knows the trouble it will cause. they instead create the primal church. primordial church accuses them of heresy and attacks. Carmen, who hates the primordial fanatics since her time as valdemar's chosen, rallies some of valhall to the side of the primal church. primordial church quickly concedes that since the primals were all chosen of primordials, they are OK with the primal church.

The frogs are gonna have the ribbits when Jake really pops off

Alexander C Hyde

Due to that, (focusing)focused on its limbs to reduce mobility may-”

Alexander C Hyde

Under the watchful gaze of three frogs, Jake allowed them to witness everything that went into his opening attack. (Shouldn’t it be five frogs?)

Jansemon

it is a funny thought but it also sounds kinda stupid ...

DiscoDame

Tournament would be a lot of fun, but the terminology from the system doesn't really fit. "Administrator Candidate", "Administrators", and "Chief Administrator ". "Administrator" doesn't exactly scream tournament arc. It sounds more political. Maybe there will be like a few different options that will be presented on how to determine ownership and they will all get a vote?

DiscoDame

What even is this world wonder going to be? Have we seen a lot of world wonders? I thought they were all just like big dungeons or worlds or something. "Seat of the Exalted Prima" sounds like a political position. Meanwhile phrases like "the Exalted Prima has watched, judged, and reached a conclusion." make it sound like an actual entity like another god or something. Maybe the world wonder is like a god and a place in the same way Nevermore is? I have no idea.

DiscoDame

Whatever it is a 100% think right once Jake has control of it he is just going to hand it to Miranda to manage. "Hey, can you take over management of maybe the most important World Wonder across the multiverse for me? kthxbye!"

Josie

Jansemon must be new here, doesn't realize yet that you're an acquired taste

Josie

I'd love a tourney! I also wonder though if the system would have people compete for these Seats, which are the access points to the World Wonder, only to make all the Seat holders kill each other off. though if it's in like a Yalsten style where they don't actually die, that'd be great

definitelynotbrjenness

a massive dungeon where you can make changes to your path and level your new skills up to speed.

boffadeez

I just know zog was laughing it up at yesterday's theorys

Josie

Yeah so I read "Jake will get fungus foot" my brain is done for today 💩

Numbzy

So The Exalted Prima was confirmed by Vilas to be a bound god. Something similar to Nevermore. A quasi system entity that is kill-able and exist in reality.

While i like the setting, story and characters... the moronically exaggerated sense of scale throws me out of the moment... every time... Back against the boglord the frogs teleported "a couple thousand kilometers" to avoid a one directional blast... as in standing in the middle of Spain, to avoid a straight blast, they dodged all the way to Florida.... instead of yknow, go 100m around the boglord? Same here in this chapter, shooting an arrow at a doubledecker bus sized enemy, Jake cracked the ground the size of a small city...

Landon Tucker

well, they're in B Grade now. They've long since become planet killers. and the bog lord itself was 15 km tall. 100m wouldn't have gotten them anywhere.

My thoughts exactly. We have know we would get to ridiculous scaled when we learned that Villy destroyed, and made uninhabitable, 1/10th of an entire Universe. After Jake destoryed El'hakan's home world I assumed that B-grade would make feats like that fairly common place.

When the Bogloard's height had been mentioned, I tried for 3 seconds to imagine something that big, then wondered how wide he would be, then gave up. I honestly make everything way smaller in my head all the time.

That is the beauty of reading a book, you can imagine whatever you want, no matter what the Author wrote

It's like you spent the day playing with a cute cat and then it revealed it's actually a Flerken.

I was curious how powerful these creatures on Venus are since they seem to be natural B Grades. My question being how they would compare to other natural B Grades like dragons and Sylphie. After seeing this chapters interactions, I wouldn't place them anywhere close to dragons. Still Pretty cool for him to discover another elite* race tho.
